Finding a wonderful Restaurant for a meal at 5:30 so we could be at a jazz concert down the street is not easy. Alderwood is a wonderful choice Perfect Caesar salad to share for two. A delicious shrimp cocktail and a cheeseburger for my husband On the rather expensive side but the interiors, lovely service pieces and ambiance make it all worth it

My friend and I choose this restaurant because it was open for a late lunch, early dinner. There is a very limited menu. The food was good, not overly exceptional. The cocktails excellent. The door was left open due to the pandemic, so super cold while eating. Nice and professional waitstaff. Too pricey for the fare.

My husband and I went to Alderwood for dinner last night. And it was outstanding. For food that quality, the prices were approachable. and there were options on the menu if you wanted to experience the quality in a more affordable meal.
We had five items: Grilled Avocado, Burger, Pommes Frites, Tomato Salad with Chicken and Creme Brulee. Sadly we had to drive 17 after dinner and were unable to enjoy an adult beverage. Every single items was flawlessly executed and delicious. Each was unique, thoughtfully prepared and delicious. I really recommend the PassionFruit soda water for a non-alcoholic beverage. If you are looking for an expensive meal, there are pricey items on the menu. And honestly, I would like to go back and explore more items on the menu.
The staff is attentive, not annoying. The ambience is hip. It's in downtown Santa Cruz. We had no issue parking on a Saturday night. This place is worth the drive from the SF Bay Area.
Excellent lunch during covid
The food, service and atmosphere was a nice change of pace during civic restrictions. Presentation was what you would expect in a high end city establishment

What a #greatamericantakeout night that was! With the whether as perfect as it was this Tuesday, we decided to have dinner in the patio and we had the perfect food ready. The burgers where not just mouthwatering to look but definitely hit the spot as well. 👌🏼 Paired with a bottle from our new friends Birichino this Tuesday feast of pure happiness was all set. 😁 I actually liked Alderwood’s food so much that I ordered breakfast for pick up right after dinner... 😂👍🏼
Thanks to everyone for keeping it up! 👏🏼
Worth The Wait
Everything about this restaurant is worth waiting for! My husband and I had been planning to go for months and finally did so in Feb 2020. From the hostess who took my reservation, to the passionate wait staff, to the sommelier and the Chef---the wine selection and the FOOD! What a wonderful experience in Santa Cruz----just when you might have thought there was no truly fine dining to be had. Save up; it's expensive---but again; WORTH IT!

We were fortunate to get reservations to Alderwood, which has been open since the end of 2018. The menu features fresh oysters ( several selections), shellfish, fish, duck, premium steaks and my favorite, the Signature Hen-of -the Woods with celery root cream and maple gastrique! Did that dish get your attention? The Alderwood uses wood -fired cooking and one can order a $10.00 cheeseburger and beer during happy hour or splurge on $35.00 per ounce of A5 Japanese ribeye. Alderwood is a fun, busy place!
Be the first to ReplyFoodies must try Alderwood.
Alderwood is worthy of many visits. Located just off of Down Town Santa Cruz, it was easy to find and park nearby. It is a popular destination for foodies and reservations are essential. I was able to snag two counter service seats in the early evening and was not disappointed with the location. We watched as items were finished and plated by the staff which gave us an opportunity to preview the menu as we sipped our cocktails. The drinks were excellent. I had a Double Barrel Old Fashioned ($18) while my friend enjoyed a Mexican Firing Squad ($10). We started with the Smoked Beet Salad ($18) and Roasted Hen of the Woods ($18). Both were beautiful and delicious. Our entrees were equally as nice. The Scallops and the Sole were perfectly plated and served to us by a very attentive and informative waiter. The place was packed behind us but we didn't feel uncomfortably close or unable to hear each other. The bar is next to the dining area and filled with jovial patrons. Some quests waited outside for their reservation to be called.

We had a nice evening and all the entrées were good, but it was wanting in some portion and flavor. Example: Lamb was excellent if lacking in quantity for their $50. Loved the fish, but left the place still hungry. Risotto was yum. The potato pave was ok, but for $17 it was more show than go.
Personally, I would not return. I do not mean to be cruel, because the food is good...but...there are many restaurants in Santa Cruz that I would choose over Alderwood. Try Oswald's or Cafe Cruz.
Over priced for the ambiance and food!
We tried this restaurant as we had heard good things about it. It is the type of place that you would recommend if you are trying to act sophisticated as it is unique and especially in Santa Cruz. However, they have taken their attempt to an extreme. It is not a restaurant that you would go for a. Intimate dinner as you are practically sitting at the same table with others. The price of the food for the over all quality is extremely high. The food is good but not worth the price they charge. $25.00 for a carbonara dish, not a lot when it arrives. A beet salad, $17.00, really. It was good but not worth $17.00. They offer steaks starting at $60.00. If I want to pay that much for a steak, I
L go to a steak house. I’ve eaten all over the world and enjoy good food but this place, although nice, is way over prices for the location and food.
Excellent food, but staggering prices. Read on for more details...
I am not sure what we expected, but Alderwood had been recommended by many of our friends so we decided to try it early on a weeknight. Located in an extensively remodeled "Erik's Deli", the transformation is pretty amazing. There's bar seating both at the cocktail bar and also at the food prep bar, plus small booths, plus sort of open seating in the middle of the restaurant. It's dark, and serious, and very adult. This is not the place to bring children in the "no restaurant ages"; they wouldn't have any fun and your fellow diners would, well, question your sanity.
Although the tables were perhaps 20% full, we were asked to sit at the food prep bar because they had so many reservations, This seemed preposterous based on the amount of space open on the floor, but it seemed more interesting to watch the kitchen staff do their thing. Menus were offered, and holy smokes, it was a shock. It seemed to be 50% to 100% more than conventional Santa Cruz restaurants, and one would argue that, duh, it's not a conventional Santa Cruz restaurant. It's, what, an experience?
Our server (excellent young man who was helpful, friendly and yet not that Chart House Friendly "hello my name's Duane and I'll be your server tonight" sort of friendly I'd say respectful and earnest) was excellent. Great knowledge of the menu, and was not put off or judgmental when we opted for the Happy Hour menu. We ended up with two excellent margaritas, the best burger I think I have ever had (get the burger, even if you don't like burgers...), a shrimp cocktail, some outstanding peppers with a sort of cashew butter around the perimeter of the serving dish, and that was it. Light, delicious, well presented, and excellent service. By combining a few items on the happy hour menu with drinks and a wonderful dinner side dish, we concocted a delicious meal that was around ninety bucks with a good tip.
What about all of the steaks and seafood that are what Alderwood is known for? Sorry, just not willing to pay those prices. There are too many good places for less money in Santa Cruz, yet I bet that the beef and fish are wonderful if you're sort of the Morton's or Joe's Crab Shack customer. So maybe I am not the customer that Alderwood is shooting for, but I was able to find some really tasty items on the menu and I will return there for more of the same.
My hope is that Alderwood can find enough diners with some disposable incomes to keep them busy. Based on the fact that the restaurant was COMPLETELY full by the time we finished our light meal, I have no doubt that they will be busy for some time to come.
