Good food but extremely loud dining room

3/5 by 👻 @Lynn on 04/16/2024

Nice restaurant ambiance wise. We only had appetizers but they were delicious. What stuck us the instant we walked in was the NOISE level. Every voice and clatter of dishes or cutlery echoes harshly and guests are really packed in. Our server had to shout at us. We had to shout at each other to be heard across the table. Which is exactly what every other guest was doing. It was nearly unbearable and we left after appetizers.

Modern Cuisine with a Mexican Flare

5/5 by 👻 @Brett M on 02/23/2024

My partner and I visited ATX Cocina on our trip to Austin for a weekend getaway. We are use to great food in Los Angeles and had no expectations before visiting— we also had no idea what to expect. First off— our server Taylor set the bar SO high for other servers. She was a complete delight. She has worked at the restaurant for 5-6 years, was patient with us, listened so well, and educated us completely about both food and drinks. We found our favorite margs, and the best sides/apps, and completed our evening without even tapping into the entrees. The portions of the sides were unreal (highly recommend the creamy corn and Brussels). Chips and salsa were killer (not on the menu), and we also ordered the Sopes (hard to describe but unbelievably flavorful pork/bean stuffed taco shells), and the Machete (chicken stuffed quesadilla). Also highly recommend the ATX marg, and the house marg— spicy and skinny. 10/10 experience. 10/10 food. And man— 11/10 service. Round of applause for Taylor!!!

A fabulous meal

An explosion of Mexican flavor—muy rico! No need to order the plates as an assortment of small plates suffice to delight—shrimp and octopus cocktail, eggplant samosas and a fabulous brisket con queso. Highly recommend.

Gluten-free dream cuisine

5/5 by 👻 @Suzie B Gluten-Free! on 01/11/2024

This upmarket modern Mexican restaurant is totally gluten-free: the kitchen and ALL menu choices. The food was exciting and new and there are lots of small bites to savor and enjoy, while maintaining the Mexican influence and tradition. It was delicious and the staff were all knowledgeable and attentive. Brilliant evening

Terrible service

1/5 by 👻 @Mario H on 12/03/2023

I want to share my deep dissatisfaction with the recent visit to your establishment. We asked the waiter for suggestions, who responded bluntly that the place “didn't have Tex-Mex.” His attitude from that moment until we left was extremely unpleasant. We understand that each restaurant has its own culinary approach, but the lack of professionalism and unwelcoming attitude of the staff left a lot to be desired. We were looking to enjoy the authenticity of Mexican food, but instead, we were met with a negative experience. In addition, they offered us water for the baby in a glass that left a lot to be desired in terms of hygiene and presentation. When asking the waiter if they had another glass, the response was rude and unprofessional. The combination of the lack of courtesy in care and the lack of consideration regarding service to a young child left an extremely negative impression. We hope you take these reviews seriously and work to improve staff attitude and quality of service to prevent other customers from facing the same disappointment as us.

Can’t visit Austin without going to this restaurant!

5/5 by 👻 @Explorer790178 on 11/06/2023

High end mexican food. We had a wonderful meal here. Our server David was very knowledgeable and very professional. He had some great suggestions. (Felt like it was pre-covid, when you had great service.) We enjoyed the octopus appetizer. It was so flavorful! The carne asada was absolutely delicious. The salmon tacos were so good too. I think whatever dish you choose you won’t be disappointed. I only wish we were here another night so that we could go back. It was quite packed for a Monday night. They must be doing something right!

Fabulous!

5/5 by 👻 @SteeleDeb on 08/15/2023

After a little hiccup last week due to a misunderstanding, my husband and I returned to ATX Cocina last night for dinner. We are so very glad we did as the experience was superb. We’ve been holidaying in Austin for 12 days and have frequented at least as many dining venues during that time. Not only was the contemporary Mexican cuisine absolutely first class but the cocktails were the best we’ve experienced anywhere in Austin. On top of that, the service is excellent and genuine. We’d like to thank Logan who served us so well last night and also the lovely young lady who served us last week and whom we had the pleasure to talk to again during last night’s visit (sorry we didn’t pick up your name). We originally chose ATX Cocina due to its fabulous reviews on Tripadvisor. We now know why it is so highly rated, so much so that we’ve booked to return again tonight on the last night of our holiday. Many thanks to Logan for securing a table for us in an unsurprisingly fully booked restaurant. Of all the places we’ve eaten, ATX Cocina ranks equal first with one other we’ve loved whilst being here. Just go, you won’t regret it.

A pleasant experience

4/5 by 👻 @Gita V on 07/20/2023

Last week, our extended family of 5 went to downtown Austin to this restaurant for Mexican food. We made reservations and then went at the appointed hour. The restaurant was buzzing. Fernando was our server and he did an outstanding job of explaining dishes that we could have that were vegetarian and a fish dish for two of us. In all we had margarita, and pina colada for drinks; enfrijolada, tetela (really good), betabels (chilly hot but very good), burrata y fresa and a whole roasted fish. The ambience was great, and the service was very good. Fernando patiently explained the menu items to us and took good care of us through our visit. All in all, a good experience eating in downtown restaurant.

This is perhaps one of the finest dining experiences we had in Austin. The food and drinks were exceptional. Highly suggest the brussel sprout even if you have a diversion to 'em. This dish is different and delicious.

5/5 by 👻 @Terry K. on 03/20/2023

I preface this review by noting that I am a visitor to the great city of Austin. In search of place to dine for my final dinner in Austin, I turned to Yelp and up popped ATX Cocina. Of the many eateries in the downtown Austin area, many of which carry strong complimentary reviews, I chose ATX because my good Yelp friend Ron U's review caught my eye. His review was short, sweet and to the point (just like Ron) Here is my story:It was Friday and we were lucky enough to find parking on the street less than a block from ATX Cocina. We walked in without reservations and fortunately, ATX was able to seat us (I'm thinking its because we were early; such that we beat the HH group)The interior design and decor fits the name. The menu is simple and the dishes were designed for the modern mex flair. The food portions are relatively large; I think it's designed to be shared. Their selection of adult beverages, in particular their tequila, agave and mescal is top shelf. Price point averaged $20 per dish and $10-$15 per adult beverage. We tried the guacamole with home made hand ground corn tortillas (5 stars), esquites (5 stars), pulpo y chorio (3 stars), sopas (3 stars) and the machete taco (5 stars- actually 7 stars). My pick? The machete taco! It looked like a machete, stuffed with pork and cheese. The Cheese!!!! and it came with its own salsa macha. Fun Facts- ATX Cocina has been open and in operation for approximately 5 years and has recently opened a second location in north Austin. and for those who didn't know ATX is the acronym for Austin, TexaxA must try!

This is a nice restaurant for all occasions.

My boyfriend thought he made reservations at another restaurant but realized that he didn't hit submit. We still wanted to enjoy a night out and he found ATX Cocina, and keys just say I'm so glad that he did! We checked in with the hostes and there wasn't much of a wait. I spotted Palo Santo on the counter and instantly knew it will be good vibes. The dinner menu and bar menu has a nice selection , you will find something you will enjoy. We started with the queso fundido which was sooooo yummy! I'm picky with my queso and this hit the spot! I love the "pull" that it had. We both enjoyed our entrees and drinks. I love that they give a shout out to the entire crew on the menu!! We will be back again and may bring the girls for girls night.

The business guests that I took were unimpressed with the food. I think it's a decent location across from the river . I probably wouldn't come back, but a couple of people did recommend it. So I would say you should check it out for yourself! See if it's your cup of tea.

The food was A-MAZING!! Me and my sisters came here from San Antonio and it did not disappoint. The service was great and the server was very engaging and knew the menu very well. I'm going to be honest, the menu was pretty hard to navigate but our waitress was amazing and helped us out by explaining each dish. The place it's self has a vibe that a lot of other restaurants can't replicate. if you have baby's they also a full changing table (and a very nice one too). I would totally recommend checking this place out and trying the Machete!!

5/5 by 👻 @Lianna T. on 03/06/2023

The standout here is the food - fresh ingredients, inventive dishes, delicious meal. Unfortunately/fortunately, it's one of those menus where just about everything looks appealing so it is difficult to narrow down (or requires a few return visits). We split a few appetizers and sides - with some of the standouts being the hamachi with papaya and "herby-coconut leche de tigre" and the campechana with shrimp, octopus, and avocado. Each was intensely flavorful and delicious in its own right. If you had to choose one - the campechana was very special. The restaurant itself is striking in its design with arching ceilings and a modern feel. However, the tables themselves are not all that comfortable - we sat at a high top and all of the tables near us were big and communal. The sound sort of echoes throughout the place, making it a little difficult to hear your friends. Overall, would definitely recommend for food - and possibly the outdoor/patio seating might be a bit more comfortable.

ATX Cocina is a very nice, very expensive restaurant,

4/5 by 👻 @Mike S. on 03/04/2023

ATX Cocina is a very nice, very expensive restaurant, serving food that is influenced by Mexican cuisine but definitely not traditional 'interior' Mexican or Tex-Mex. Some of our food was excellent, some was just ok.We made reservations for an early dinner before a show on a Friday. The only opening was at 4:45 so we took it. There were already quite a few people in the restaurant and we were seated right away. It's a beautiful, very modern decor, with a nice view of Lady Bird Lake (albeit looking through rush hour traffic). Our service was excellent from start to finish. We were waited on by quite a few people who kept the food and drinks coming at the right pace. Our waiter was friendly and very informative about the restaurant and dishes. We started with a couple of house margaritas and the sopes appetizer. The drinks were excellent. The sopes were three small puffy corn cups topped with cocinita pibil and beans. They were very good. The cocinita pibil was very tender though it didn't have quite the strong axiote flavor I normally expect. It was a pretty small appetizer but enough for the two of us. We know that ATX Cocina specializes in making their own masa so we also got some corn tortillas and tortilla chips with salsa. The corn tortillas were fantastic. They had a very strong corn flavor, not at all like the usual more bland corn tortillas you get at Mexican restaurants.I ordered the red chile roasted chicken as my appetizer. I'd heard about the white mole since the restaurant opened so I came in planning to order this dish. It was kind of disappointing. The chicken was cooked nicely, very moist, with a spiciness from the chile. But the white mole was really underwhelming. I didn't expect it to be as strong as the more well-known moles, like Poblano, but this was really bland. The braised cabbage and big chunks of bacon didn't do much to elevate the dish.My wife ordered the pomegranate glazed pheasant. It was excellent. Again, the pheasant was perfectly cooked and moist. The glaze was sweet but not overly so. The grits were pretty bland so didn't really add much to the dish but the dish overall was excellent. We ordered a flan to share as our dessert. It was a very large potion with a chocolate layer on top and mixed berries. The chocolate topping kind of overwhelmed the dish. The flan itself was not 'custardy', more like pudding. And we couldn't detect any caramel, which is normally at the base. So, it was a reasonably tasty dessert but not very good flan. The meal ended up being pretty expensive, at about $220 for two people with tip. It is a nice restaurant, with a very modern atmosphere and excellent service, but for us, a mixed bag on the food itself. There are other higher end Mexican restaurants that we're more likely to frequent but we're glad we finally tried ATX Cocina. It's worth a visit.

Excellent service and fun dishes. We ended up just doing small plates because the menu was so great. Highly recommend the hamachi and equites though every thing was awesome. Our server, John, was great and they clearly focus on service - it was seamless. I would definitely go back- maybe tomorrow
