Celebrated my boyfriend's birthday here with the anniversary menu and I have to say I enjoyed the food very much! It was so creative and the presentation was absolutely gorgeous! The service is amazing too, they greeted us right away, provided us with the huge chunk of caviar bumps that I reserved, and also gave us free champagne to celebrate his birthday! The restaurant environment is very small, but a very cozy vibe! Loved this place so much!
Be the first to ReplyNot surprised at all to see them closing.
Food was average, service was terrible. It should have happened long ago.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing all around and has been since it opened.
Chef Rodney and his team are at the top of their craft. Everything was delicious, beautiful, and interesting.

I am not sure where these other reviews are coming from unless something has dramatically changed. We were greeted immediately, had drinks and first bites downstairs (SO good) and then went up for the remainder of the meal. It was incredible. We loved every bite. And we did the champagne tasting which was delicious and very generous and also the caviar pancakes. Yummm! We had so many favorite bites, and I was blown away. I also love the idea of the sommelier picking a wine for you.

We had such a nice experience at Avery last night! It's an intimate small space. You start with drinks and small bites in the lounge downstairs before heading upstairs to the dining room. All the small bites were delicious - especially the avocado pie. We also opted for the caviar bump (served on the back of your hand) - that was delicious and fun. In the dining room, all the main courses were great and beautifully presented- there were no weak dishes. I especially loved the curry, the bison, the onion tart, and the ice cream with honey. The spacing of the courses was perfect and we found the service to be attentive and thoughtful. Sean, the somm, is knowledgable and easy to talk to. The only awkwardness - and it's minor- is that they are running the restaurant with about 3 people - 2 chefs and the somm - so when we got there, there was nobody to meet us at the door and so we didn't know what to do with ourselves for a few minutes - but then they came and said hi and got us started with drinks and bites - and from there it was seamless. Avery totally deserves their Michelin star!

In seven years of dining at some of San Francisco's unique and incredible restaurants, I'm writing to share our recent experience at Avery Restaurant. We booked our reservation through Tock for a table for 4 on August 10th, celebrating a work milestone with colleagues. Our meal was scheduled for 7:00 p.m., but we wouldn't receive the final bill until 11:35 that evening -- over four and a half hours later. From the moment of our arrival it was evident something was wrong. We were kept downstairs for over 40 minutes before being seated -- the host brought drinks and canapes, but most of these tasted a bit off. Dishes were arriving at bizarre intervals, and over the whole evening, we repeatedly waited for over 30 minutes between courses or even staff checking on us. Many of the dishes tasted a bit funky -- with raw scallops arriving at room temperature and several of the courses missing the mark. After the two hour mark, I began feeling deeply ill and had to excuse myself from the meal -- I would discover after a doctors visit two days later that this was very likely viral food poisoning, with the timing of symptoms lining up with the start of this meal. Two hours in, we were all a bit weirded out by the whole experience, and we should have trusted our gut and asked to wrap up the meal early. For the three in our party that remained for the additional two and a half hours after I left from becoming ill, they described the experience as "bizarre", with dishes continuing to arrive after long waits. The staff ended up apologizing at the end of the 4.5-hour experience, but the full and substantial bill didn't at all match the experience we got. New and innovative dining experiences should be celebrated, and I admire Avery for the ideas behind some of the dishes they put together. Unfortunately, the dining experience completely missed the mark, with unsafely prepared food that left us confused and impatient -- leading to 4.5 hours that felt awkward and imbalanced.
Be the first to ReplyTried out the tasting menu at Avery for a birthday
Tried out the tasting menu at Avery for a birthday celebration. First off, I thought the overall concept of the restaurant was quite interesting. Really liked how casual it felt inside compared to other places, and it was fun starting with cocktails and canapes downstairs in the lounge before moving upstairs for dinner. Plus, the service was fantastic. Our server was very kind and friendly -- the perfect balance of attentive while also giving us our own space. I thought the food was pretty good overall. Our favorites of the night were the Avocado Pie, Clam Taco, Aebleskiver, and of course all the fun add-ons like the caviar bumps and the caviar pancakes. I wasn't the hugest fan of the meat courses (Roasted Bird and Bison) or the desserts. Ordering drinks with dinner was a little confusing... I believe they offer a sake pairing and a champagne pairing. However, if you want to order something by the glass, there is no set list to choose from. You pretty much tell the team what you like, they will suggest something based on whatever they have open, and you pay a set price of $55 per glass. We ended up just ordering a bottle because the glass thing seemed too complicated/overwhelming! In general, glad we got to try but I don't know if it was worth the $1100 we ended up paying for the both of us.

Food-- told the server one dish was too salty to eat that night. He confirmed with manager and come back with verbal confirmation and apologized, that's it. No replacement or follow ups. I diluted my dish with a cup of water but still too salty. Also I waited long to get water refilled. Cleanness-- I ate fiber in my tart from unknown cloth, also saw the fabric sticked on my fork. Service-- All issued the restaurant was acknowledged, no corrective actions when I was there. Write emails also no one replied. The worst Michelin restaurant I've even been to.
Be the first to ReplyWe tried the shorter menu, and came in around 5:30 PM.
It took less than 2 hours. Service is pretty good Food exceeds my expectations as well. $89 is a great deal, so come and try it out!
Be the first to ReplyI felt like I was dining in an episode of Chef's Table.
As it turns out, Chef Rodney was featured in the Dominique Crenn episode of Chef's Table during his time at Atelier Crenn. The atmosphere felt very intimate and cozy. The service was excellent. And the food lived up to its potential. We chose the $89 Supper Menu, and it was the perfect amount of food. I enjoyed everything but the standouts included the River trout, tortellini, and grilled bison for me. I recommend this as a relatively more affordable set menu in SF by a very talented chef.
Be the first to ReplyI kept hearing such great things about Avery so had to come.
I really like the Asian inspired dining options. Everything was really yummy and they made adjustments for my friend's allergies. All the courses were gorgeous and I feel everything was reasonably priced! The restaurant is nice decorated too... a plus.

I've been wanting to go to Avery for a while and I'm glad I went. I loved starting out the meal in the lounge to enjoy some canapรฉs and a cocktail (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Then you go upstairs to enjoy the tasting. Great combinations of flavors with various influences. Balance flavors. Some highlights: the aged rack of lamb, the caviar pancakes (add on), and the allium tart. Although pricey, the champagne pairing is a nice change compared to wine pairings. They also offer a sake pairing.Great space and ambiance. Friendly service.
Be the first to ReplyA bit on the fence about this place.
On the one hand very chilled out and not rushed with enjoying the evening. The food was very well presented and tasted good. The head chef/owner presented himself very well. A few things however that ruined the mood. One of which is the lady who seated us. There was another party of two who apparently she " knew" and was very outspoken and friendly with, making sure they were taken care of. From a business point of view I would assume you want to make sure everyone felt equally welcomed and appreciated? Then there was one of the servers who served us a few dishes. Very nice guy but his breath smelled really bad. We also got a goodie bag with hot sauce in it but nothing on the menu had anything hot sauce related. What the heck is going on? Anyways this place is nice. I feel like if an actual Michelin auditor came through and critiqued the place as is, it might not be what it originally deserved.

Are you ready for a gastronomical adventure in the Filmore? Then step inside the Avery! My husband and I had so much fun here. The food and service were phenomenally good! The menu was amazing, and the presentation was off the charts. My favorites were the lobster curry soup, aged tuna, and the add on of the Hokkaido Snow Beef hot pot. The one dish that surprised me was the grilled beets. (Seriously, I hate beets. But Sean and the other chef "guaranteed" that I would like this dish. They were right. It was so good!) would love to come back to try their next round of dishes, so I better start saving now.
Be the first to ReplyI have never been so let down by a Michelin star experience
I have never been so let down by a Michelin star experience before. What was supposed to be a anniversary celebration with my girlfriend and father turned into a 4 hour nightmare.Let me first start by saying - compliments to the chef the flavors were there, however the service ruined the experience. Your limited number of staff truly leaves guests feeling lack of care. Actually, The service element of your restaurant is what infuriated me the most. Some basic fine dining mannerisms missing:1) no one greets you2) no one offers to hang up your coat - which is right next to the kitchen by the way so your clothes smell like food after3) ladies are served first - this is so simpleAlso, I have NEVER been lied to my face before at a Michelin star restaurant. We were greatly looking forward to the king crab. However, swapping it out for lobster without telling us is NOT Ok. When we asked the Sommelier about it - he brushed us off saying he thought he had mentioned the restaurant ran out of ingredients. DUDE our reservation was at 6pm. I find this incredibly hard to believe. While other guests were arriving later in the evening he proceeded to explain the menu to others saying it was king crab. I even saw other people eating it. Not cool.We brought our own bottle of wine and it was not served to us until half an hour later as the staff was busy attending serving other guests. Also, real lack of privacy here in a small confined space. 5 tables tiny room upstairs. Oh, did I mention your dinner takes 4 hours ? LOLEdit:I reached out to the chef to address our horrible experience. As expected no apology and nor a phone call. Incredibly rude.DO NOT eat at this scam restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent place, with high quality of service.
The creativity of the chef is really impressive, the flavors, the colors, the freshness, the combination of texture... It is definitely a 1-star Michelin establishment promised to a nice ramp up.In addition, the chef is approachable, friendly, and very obliging. We will be back as soon as we find an open spot!
Be the first to ReplyI went AVERY with my wife.
I gave a 4 star for the restaurant but don't get me wrong the restaurant is good, but when you spent over $500 per person good is not enough, it should be perfect. Below are problems that I'm not satisfied(1) Nobody greets you, we stand in the front for 5 min before somebody noticed us. This is wrong for a good restaurant (2) the dinner starts with sitting downstairs for part of the appetizer, but nobody explains this for you. It was me that brought the question to the waiter (Is this our dining table) and then I got the answer(3) when we got to the dining area and they confirmed the menu, the first several courses came on the table. However, nobody ever told us about the drinking options. I checked some reviews beforehand and I knew there is a sake paring so I asked for it, but again it should not be me that asked the question, it should be the waiter.(4) Finally, when we ordered the sake pairing nobody tells us the price. Again because I read reviews online so I know it is $250 per person, but this is not proper service.
Be the first to ReplyHad a remarkable dining experience once again at Avery
Had a remarkable dining experience once again at Avery filled with delicious courses. This dining experience was slightly different from my previous experiences since the dining experience began at the waiting room and then was directed to the dining room. We started off with a three tier appetizer stand which consisted of smoked trout bruschetta, a sea urchin pie, and slices of Iberico ham topped with salad. The sea urchin pie was stupendous with the squid ink crust that was filled with the richness of the sea urchin. Once we were done with our appetizers, we were guided to the dining area and seated promptly. The wine cellar dining area is impressive with its beautiful display of wines and charming decor. I appreciate how it's secluded from the rest of the dining room giving it a more intimate dining experience. Highlights of the mealThe onion tart was delectable with its unique ingredients of perfectly torched smoky onion embedded in a flaky cheesy tart. The pumpkin pie was stupendous with a velvety texture complimented by the toasted nuts and flaky crust. The only downside of this meal for me was that the meal wasn't filling and there were some dishes that were not to my palate. Service was, as expected, superb and I really enjoyed the ambiance.
Be the first to ReplyT underwhelming.
Maybe I set my expectations too high thinking the experience would be in the ballpark of other Michelin star restaurants I have been to. Instead, it was closer to just a pretty good meal. We did not have one "wow" moment. The one good thing was that our reservation was messed up, and they still accommodated us. The staff seemed to just go through the motions and exhibited none of the passion for what every other starred experience I have had. The food just didn't stand out other than a few nice decorative platings. I don't want to over complain, but I totally wasted over $1,300. My two guests were very disappointed as well.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good.
The service is average for a Michelin star restaurant. I'm not a service snob but for that price point I would expect to be really well taken care off and it didn't feel that way. When I provided some feedback to the owner about my experience not only was he very dismissive I was told I lacked social skills... hmmm... ok....

What a phenomenal restaurant! All of the dishes were very creative and flavorful. My foodie friend from New York and I have collectively dined at hundreds of Michelin-Starred restaurants all over the world and we were very impressed with Avery. We both think that the Michelin Star award was well-deserved and won't be surprised if it gets at least 2 Michelin Stars. Chef Rodney and team went above and beyond. I am looking forward to coming back!
Be the first to ReplyThere are just no words adequate to describe the experience
There are just no words adequate to describe the experience you'll have if you dine at Avery. ย I have been lucky enough to come here 4 times now and each time seems to the top the previous. If you don't take my word for it, Michelin also agrees. From the outside, the door is unassuming and quite simple. Once inside, the ambience and dรฉcor is elegant and intimate. ย You should come here knowing that the tasting menu will last several hours and it is meant to take your taste buds on an incredible journey. ย Each dish is a piece of art that seems too pretty to eat, yet once you taste it, it'll be an euphoric experience that's difficult to describe. With the tasting menu, you can opt for a wine or sparkling wine pairing which I highly recommend. Space and times are limit so I highly suggest you plan to make a visit to experience a night you'll definitely remember.

Ambience 4 starsFood 4starsSake pairing negative stars A5 wage add on 2 stars Caviar add on 4 stars Staff 3 stars The price fix menu was good, with a nice range of flavors. Most dishes looked and tasted great. What was missing was a story teller. Most of the time, there is worthwhile story to the prep, ingredients or some aspect of the dishes and they are shared by the staff. The reason many people come to these types of restaurants is the experience. That was lacking. ย The sake tasting was sad. ย (At 250! ) the range and quality left us flabbergasted. ย Overall a mediocre experience for a hefty price ( 1400 for 2 )
Be the first to ReplyAlthough the nearly $250 per person (post tip/tax) price
Although the nearly $250 per person (post tip/tax) price tag felt a bit steep for the ingredients that were served (and presentation was maybe not quite on par with restaurants of similar caliber), I thought the food was solid and enjoyed my dinner experience.I came here a couple nights ago to celebrate my cousin's and my birthday. The highlights of the menu included the savory cocktail (which was quite vinegary given the pineapple and sauerkraut - my cousin and I thought it was delicious although the other two diners did not like it as much), mushroom tortellini (buttery, rich, and delicious), and the sweet/savory strudel (such a unique combination of flavors but worked perfectly!). Although good, I would say my least favorite dish was the bison (well-cooked, but flavors were not memorable at all). The staff as expected were professional, efficient, and knowledgable, and the food came out at a good pace. Again, I thought the price tag was a little steep for the ingredients used but still very much enjoyed the experience.

WOW. I really wanted to love this place based on the reviews and the pics, and boy did I! The food, ambience, staff... everything was amazing. We tried their tasting menu on Jan 21, 2022 and paired it with a Junmai Daiginjo "Taiheizan 'Tenko 40' Heavenly Grace" from Akita prefecture. The pairing worked well for the entire meal. This asian inspired tasting menu featured a lot of vegetables and some meat dishes. Everything was seasoned extremely well and was as much a feast to the eyes as it was to our taste buds. There were 10 distinct items on the tasting menu, with one additional chocolate cake they brought out for my birthday. 1) A house cocktail to serve as a palate cleanser. It was vinegar based with pineapple juice, egg whites and some bitters among other things. It packed a punch! This was the only item in the menu that I didn't finish as the quantity was too much for me for the flavor profile it carried.2) Trout w/ Roe - came topped on a crispy base. Super fresh and light.3) Japanese Turnips - the turnips were teeny, tiny and covered with black sesame paste. It was quite delicious but my favorite part was the seasoned step. (sorry, the pic came out quite messy for this one!)4) Bluefin Tuna - 4 thin slices of tuna topped with micro-greens, cucumbers and finger lime. I did not know what a finger lime was till I tried this dish. They are these tiny little lime bombs that just exploded in your mouth to create a perfect harmony with the tuna and the sauce on this dish.5) Coconut curry - this dish came with a swirl of cabbage topped with a few slices of mushrooms sprinkled with dill. The cabbages felt like noodles in the coconut broth. Probably the best cabbage I have ever had. The mushrooms were super thinly slices and delectable. There were also some spinach on the side. But the winner on this dish was the combo of the coconut broth with the mint oil. I love everything about it - the flavor was amazing and it looked like a piece of art on the spoon!6) Mushroom tortellini - This was my favorite dish. These little tortellini were stuffed with mushroom and culture butter. When you bit into this, the melted butter just burst into your mouth. The soup that these tortellini were served on was onion based. Delicious! I could eat a giant bowl of these :)7) Bison Filet - Cooked to perfection served with wood-eared mushrooms with chicken based creamy sauce. My fiance's favorite item.8) 4 different desserts (including the birthday cake) - Banana cream strudel, candy cane mushroom, ice-cream ย with stout sauce and chocolate cake. All were delicious and delicate yet filling. A great way to end the meal. We also got some coffee to go with out dessert.Cannot say enough good things about the staff. They were lovely and did everything to make us comfortable and enjoy the experience. They also sent us back home with a little bag of sesame cookie each. And not to forget, they had a lovely birthday card waiting for me with the entire staff signature when we got there. Absolutely loved the experience!
