Beauty & Essex New York Reviews from The Last Year
Horrible service, our waiter literally pulled up once ever
Horrible service, our waiter literally pulled up once ever hour. Took 1 hour to get seated even though we had reservations. Stayed here for 3 and a half hours because there was a huge delay on getting the food. Steak was salty , literally way over seasoned. Felt like I was getting high blood pressure just eating it. The Korean tacos apps were maaaaad salty. The steak get outta here was even more salty which was hard to beat. Food was wack , bad service. Look at my other reviews I never give a 1 star but this place deserves a 0 respectfully especially with the prices they charge. They automatically put tip on the bill. High key wasn't trying to pay automatic 20% because the service was so wack. I drank 5 glasses of water here to wash down the steak. The halal cart around the corner got better eats ong. Avoid this spot at all cost unless you like to blow your bread for fun
Great food but service not so.
The food was really nice and we liked the concept of sharing everything, but the service didnt match the food/atmosphere. Most staff seemed to confuse cool & arrogance. BTW I dont go to a restaurant to meet a cool waitress. The food was generally fantastic. They had un out of the NY strip steak, so we had the Tomahawk instead. Some friendliness training for the staff would make this a must.
I came here for restaurant week for girls night!! we nabbed
I came here for restaurant week for girls night!! we nabbed one of the last reservations for dinner on a Sunday night. Literally had to come when they opened, but the inside is beautiful. You have to walk through a pawn shop to get inside and then the lobby/foyer is gorgeous. The ambience is very old New York, and looks like a hotel. We got the restaurant week deal for dinner, so an appetizer, entree, and dessert. I went with the brisket bao buns, skirt steak over fried rice, and the ice cream sundae for dessert. my friends also got the brisket bao bun, and one of us got the soup dumplings!! honestly we picked here partially because of the nacho/taco inspired soup dumplings. we were really excited to try them; appearance wise they looked really elegant and were easy to share since the dumplings each had their own spoon. however they were definitely more of a western interpretation on a dumpling, just floating in soup within the spoon. the dumpling was just a little dough ball, versus a thinner wrapping with filling. still yummy but just was a little disappointed by that. as for mains, i had to take off a star because of the skirt steak over fried rice. the steak was cooked and seasoned well, but the fried rice... it was so, so wet. i couldn't get over it, it was also seasoned in kinda a meh way, i mostly tasted bell pepper?? the wetness was super offputting. it was actually damp. at least they gave a very decent portion of it, i was lowkey stuffed halfway through the steak, but even if i hadn't been i probably wouldn't have been able to finish the fried rice. i opted NOT to take the main home because of how bad the fried rice was, even though i had over half the bowl remaining lol. the desserts were all delicious, one of my friends got the milk and cookie shot, which according to her was delicious. i got the ice cream sundae, which was one of the most beautiful sundaes i've ever seen, and it was almost as good as it looked. the ice cream was super creamy, although not super strongly flavored, but generally no complaints. i think this was worth the money, but next time i would get a different main. the ambiance really makes the meal feel special, next time i come i have to try the drink menu as well!!
I went with a group of three other coworkers, and the food
I went with a group of three other coworkers, and the food was very good and the ambience can be described as somewhere between romantic and speakeasy-ish. The server we had was terrible. He was very flipit in his menu discussion, seldonmly visited the table, left all of our dirty dishes on the table for the entire meal and was very short and Kurt with us. He spent excessive time, flirting with other patrons, instead of tending to all of his customers. His name was Safi. The manager resolved my dissatisfaction in an agreeable manner so for that reason, I can negate the poor service, and simply review the food and ambience, which was very good
Walking into this restaurant felt like finding a secret
Walking into this restaurant felt like finding a secret treasure. It's lively and fun inside, with great music. It looks like a pawn shop from the outside, but inside, it's a whole different world. The food was great too. I loved the kale apple salad because the sauce was so good, and the mac and cheese with truffles was something special. The eggplant was a deliciously light start to the meal. The steak tasted good, but the sauces with it were just okay. The service was fast and professional. This place is really worth checking out for its cool vibe and tasty dishes.
Ambiance of the place is nice but the food is pretty
Ambiance of the place is nice but the food is pretty average for the price you pay. Service was also a bit slow. It took almost 20 minutes for them to bring out our drinks.
Not again!
Quite already seen before trendy place! Food average and actually everything! The service poor! I have visited such a places already 15 years ago!
Very disappointed in our experience here.
We had made a reservation for 9PM and arrived on time. We checked in with the hostess and can already see a huge amount of people waiting for their table. Surely enough, we couldn't even get a seat in the waiting area. We went over to the bar and ordered a very overpriced drink but the drink was good. We probably aren't seated until 10PM. The only pro during this check in process was the coat check. Once we arrived at our table, the table was very small and close to the other tables. We could hear everyone's conversation around us. We asked our server a few questions that we had about the menu. It was very loud and we could barely hear his replies. We did ask about the restaurant week menu's tortilla soup dumplings. We decided to give that a try since he said they were known for that and explained the ingredients and how it's made. After we ordered, he asked us if we had any allergies. We both said no. When the food started to arrive, we both tried the dumplings. Yes, absolutely delicious! They were placed on a soup spoon each. Once we took a bite, we were both kinda confused. This tastes like tomato soup? This also has bacon. Major alert. My boyfriend doesn't eat pork due to religious reasons. We were really upset at this point. We asked our server if there's bacon in our dish. He was rude and started off with "Remember when I asked you guys if you had food allergies or restrictions?" I said no. You asked if we have allergies and we don't. I never heard restrictions. He said "OK so you guys want a new one made?" We said yes without bacon if you can. Well, he took it personal and never stopped by our table again. Lack of service the rest of the night. We were talking amongst ourselves on how they were able to serve a dish with bacon without listing the ingredient out. Now after the fact - we realize that Beauty & Essex gave us the wrong dumplings. They gave us the grilled cheese, smoked bacon and tomato soup dumplings. Smoked Bacon is in the name of this dish - not what we ordered. We had to wait around for everything after we exchanged this out. From the time that we came in to the time that we left, dinner took 2.5 hours due to the overbooked tables wait and our server's attitude. We actually paid the bill, tipped, and as we were leaving he made eye contact as we walked past and he did not even thank us. The pros on this were the food was pretty decent. I enjoyed the chicken parmesan that was on the restaurant week menu. It was fairly large and the leftovers the following day tasted great too. I also ordered the beef wellington and although it did not come out cut to see the beauty of it's work, it tasted spot on. Due to our poor experience, we will not be returning.
Made a New Year's Eve reservation which was on a Sunday.
They confirmed on Friday. Sunday at 3 pm they call to say they no longer have our 7pm table available or I can take a 6 pm table. I live 90 minutes away and was at the gym at the time. I basically had to cancel. What kind of business operates this way? No care for their customers whatsoever and the hostess who called sounded so vapid and like she couldn't care less how wrong and unethical this was. The absolute worst customer service. Do not take the risk.
Beauty & Essex is a spot I've heard so much about but
Beauty & Essex is a spot I've heard so much about but haven't been to up until 2 weeks ago. We arrived on a rainy Sunday night to an almost full restaurant and walk-ins waiting by the bar. Don't let the pawn shop entrance fool you, as the elegant interior is behind the door inside. They were doing a restaurant week special that night. They let you pick 3 courses for $60 a person. For apps, we ordered the grilled cheese dumplings and crispy bao buns. The crispy bao buns were delicious, I would definitely order them again. The grilled cheese dumplings were good, more on the simple side though. They came inside serving spoons filled with tomato soup, so you could easily slurp them up. For entrees, we ordered the lobster carbonara and chicken parm. Both came in gigantic portions. They were just okay, nothing to write home about. For dessert, we ordered the doughnuts. They came with a caramel, mixed berry, and chocolate dipping sauce. These were pretty good, especially with the caramel sauce. The service was friendly but a bit spotty as the dining room was huge and busy. It took awhile to get our check and the waiter never came back to offer us another round of drinks. 3.5 rounded to a 3. The food was okay, atmosphere was amazing, and drinks were good!
Sunday brunch was nice, food was good, service better,
Sunday brunch was nice, food was good, service better, atmosphere lively. It's more so for the experience then to experience the food, so dinner is best. Time to get boujee, you already know...
An amazing speakeasy restaurant.
Not many non NYer knows about this restaurant, even some NYers dont know since there is no restaurant sign on the front store. It is disguised as a pawn shop. The decoration and design inside are wonderful and elegant, perfect for a date night and special occasion. We had restaurant week menu and B&E prefix brunch. We had: 1. Fruit & chia seeds parfait that is flavorful & healthy 2. Red velvet waffle with cream cheese icing is so fluffy and a hint of sweetness. 3. Shaksuka with toasted bread are perfect combo and delicious. You can substitute the bread with salad. 4. Short ribs Rancheros are small portions (2 bites only), but delicious. 5. The side potatoes with sausages and gouda cheese are so delicious. I need the rancheros sauce to add the flavor. Overall, it is an epic deal!!! We left the restaurant content and happy.
underwhelming hype
We had been really looking forward to this after reading several reviews and friends recommendations. The entrance is a clever concept and atmosphere buzzing. After checking in at the front desk we were shown to our table. However service was slow, we eventually ordered and were given no help or suggestions on the menu, this resulted in too much food being ordered and subsequently wasted. The food itself was not great for the price. Aubergine was soggy when described as crispy and so heavy on miso flavouring it was quite sickly. The little sirloin toasts were rock hard and lukewarm. The burger had a fishy aftertaste and was not eaten. Two servers delivered food to the table next to us and bumped my chair, accidentally tipped a plate of food, the cutlery on the plate and juices ended up down my back soiling my jacket. This was met with a shrug ! No one returned to the table with offer of a cloth to clean up or an apology. When I told the waitress I would not be adding service and explained why and how disappointed we were at everything there was an air of disinterest and rudeness. With most dishes starting between $25-$75 I think this restaurant is running on hype and not quality of food and cooking and service. I couldn’t wait to leave.
What a night!
We visited in Halloween night after going to the parade, we were visiting from Australia and had pre booked this a month before for my auntie’s birthday. The place is unassuming from the outside and fab on the inside! The cocktails were beautiful in the bar area. Everyone loved our meals, the little French toasts were BEAUTIFUL as well as the scallops with risotto, my mum loved the salmon and we ordered a cute little dessert wheel for the birthday girl, everything was fab and we all have been raving about what a great night we had! Not cheap but that was our splash out for the trick, worth every cent!
Food is excellent
A friend and I took our teens for dinner and they are already asking to go back. It was a vibe, music was excellent (throwback 90s/00s). Highly recommend the grilled cheese and tomato soup dumplings, all of the bites on toast, bbq fries and truffle mac n cheese. Cocktails were also really good. Service was a little slow but the waitstaff were really apologetic and the restaurant was packed. Overall we had a great last meal in the city. Will be going back on our next visit for sure
Wonderful food!
Wonderful restaurant. Delicious food; grilled cheese tomato soup dumplings, onion rings, cauliflower tacos and ravioli. Great vibe at the bar and in the restaurant. And yes, you do enter through a pawn shop!
Great Ambiance
I gave it four stars because the ambiance, drinks, and server were fantastic! The food had great taste but "nothing" was remotely hot or even warm so it made the experience/food-wise not good.
Worst service in NYC
Not a good place to visit unless you are a tourist and have never been to good restaurants in New York. We live in Manhattan and had never been here but thought it would be a fun night out. The place was understaffed and really sub par. Not a place we would ever visit again.
Needs a dress code.
Beauty and Essex came highly recommended, and it was, overall, very good. The place has a very hip vibe, and the décor was awesome. Our server was very good as was the food. Our only issue is that there isn’t a dress code, which meant that while many people try to dress appropriately, you can still find yourself sitting beside some “dude” in a ball cap, old t-shirt and track pants. This really killed the atmosphere. If B&E enforced a dress code, I easily could have given them a 5 out of 5.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
