Bistro Mathilda Oostende Reviews from The Last Year
Gastronomy in Ostend
A pleasant quiet atmosphere. We took the three-course menu offered. The food was really delicious. Flavor bomb on your plate. We drink little to no alcohol and the mocktails are a real alternative to this delicious food. The staff is friendly but rather reserved. Little to no explanation, which is a shame in such a classy business. We missed some warmer service. Conclusion: definitely recommended for those looking for gastronomy and surprising flavors on your plate.
No
This restaurant is listed in the Gault Millau 2024 where it scored 13.5/20. Unfortunately ... The Sole Meuniere was served completely incorrectly: the soles were perfectly cooked, but were served dry without 1 drop of butter sauce. When I asked for butter sauce, 5 minutes later - while the tongues were getting cold - a small jar of melted butter was offered. So not the butter in which the soles were prepared. This is not appropriate for a dish costing €45!
Positive experience, an establishment to come back to.
Bistro Mathilda is an established value in Ostend. It is not cheap, but where is it cheap today? It is definitely worth its price. Beautiful, neat interior, linen tablecloth and napkins (which of course must also be charged to the customer), friendly and smooth service. More than worth it for a cozy and tasty lunch or dinner.
For us at this price, this will no longer be possible in the future.
I usually go to this restaurant once or twice a year. I have always considered this restaurant to be a pleasant surprise at the seaside. Last year, I was surprised by the bill which had already caught my attention. And this year, the prices surprised me. The food offered as well as the taste of the food are perfect. However, in just a few years, prices have exploded. A little over 415 euros for 4 starters and 4 main courses, 2 desserts, no coffee, 4 aperitifs, and the equivalent of a bottle of basic wine and two half bottles of water. For us this will no longer be possible in the future. And if I decided to write this review it is also because compared to the past, the pressure on the fact that you can only stay two hours is a bit extreme and in addition, our young waitress has lost all empathy to make us swallow something other than the bill. Delighted with the success of the restaurant's cuisine, however, stay vigilant. The customer is not just a cash cow.
Simply great! Absolutely recommended!!
Super! Top service, friendly, professional approach, kitchen is fresh, surprising and simply fantastic. Price/quality more than okay. Good wine choices! Highly recommended 10/10!!!
Just good, nothing special
The 2 of us went out for lunch. Friendly service and we quickly got a spot without a reservation. The food was not too bad, rye wing fine, stew substandard. Too bad the comment was laughed off with a quick apology. The price was very disappointing if you got 1/2 good food. Certainly not a bad place, just a shame about the meat. Certainly not worth the 10/10 as stated on the menu.
Nothing special
Don't really understand the rave reviews. Catch of the day haddock was really not tasty. Lay on a bed of overcooked pasta with two spoons of rouille and something indefinably bitter. Starter not much better. Bad day or staff shortage? The serving girl works hard, but plates are simply put down without any boo or yuck, a bit of speed service. Disappointing both food and service.
Tasty, but mixed feelings
About 2 weeks ago we went to Bistro Mathilda here in Ostend to have dinner with my sister-in-law and brother-in-law Gerda and Denis, we always do that just after New Year's and this year we chose Mathilda, on the corner of the Leopold. II-laan, close to Dikke Mathilde, the flower watch and the Casino/Kursaal. Friendly reception where the coats were hung up and we were led to the 1st floor, nice spacious tables with cloth sheets and cloth napkins but a somewhat cool, sterile interior. Ordered an appetizer and everything was delivered very professionally, I ate veal sweetbreads as a starter and wanted veal kidney as a main course, but I was kindly informed that the side vegetables etc. on the plate would be the same as on the sweetbreads plate, so Switched to rye wing which was really tasty. My wife and Denis ate entrecote and they both really liked it, my sister-in-law ate stew and she also really liked it, so that was all fine... although the service was really very professional and there was really nothing to complain about. couldn't help but smile at any point, it was cool and sterile like the interior. But again, nothing to complain about, some people like that. The second is the price/quality, for example 45 euros for a sirloin steak, I think something about it. We didn't do anything crazy there, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law shared 2 shrimp croquettes as a starter, my wife didn't have a starter and, as mentioned, I had the sweetbreads, 4 aperitifs and 1 average bottle of white wine, no dessert. 340 euros. Well, I think that's too much, we had a nice meal, but not great. So I don't think we'll go back there, but I still give it 4 stars out of 5.
VERY PLEASANT MUSIC PLAYED ON THE PIANO IN THE KITCHEN
We enjoyed a delicious meal at the restaurant! The dishes were exquisite, the service impeccable and the atmosphere very pleasant. A memorable culinary experience to recommend without hesitation! Surprise about the African dish (Shakshuka with kale) Beautiful wine list which will delight Burgundy lovers.
Vegetarian menu.
We were warmly welcomed at Bistro Mathilda and opted for a vegetarian three-course menu. Both starter and main course were very tasty. What did bother me is that even though you choose vegetarian, you still get a snack with meat. As a polite and well-behaved Belgian you let it happen, but I don't think it's okay in such a case. That can and must be improved. The price was also equally expensive as it was non-vegetarian. It is fair to do this a little cheaper or give an extra snack. You got half a piece of bread which is very little. The Dame Blanche was delicious to finish. All in all very good, but a few downsides that shouldn't be there.
