The idea of this restaurant--serving a full meal made of seasonal food--was an interesting one, and the service was warm and welcoming. The problems is the food and behind it the chef. My first two courses were seriously over salted and almost inedible. When I mildly pointed this out, I was told that the salt on the food had not dissolved properly. The next course had no salt but was over-peppered. The first three courses were wasted on me; I could not taste the food for the salt and then the pepper. The next course, the main dish consisted of a piece of fish; I took one bite and pushed it away. It had no salt, no pepper and no seasoning of any kind; it was utterly tasteless. Seems to me that committing to a full meal carries the risk that the food will have no savor. That's the case, I think, with this restaurant. I left hungry and won't be back.

Our recent dining experience at Family Meal at Blue Hill exceeded all expectations, thanks to the exceptional service provided by Savannah. Despite a minor hiccup with the menu offerings for our children, Savannah's unwavering dedication ensured that our evening was nothing short of extraordinary. She orchestrated off-menu creations that surpassed our wildest expectations. Savannah's calm demeanor and genuine care transformed what could have been a disappointing experience into a truly memorable one. We are eternally grateful for her exemplary service and the culinary delights crafted by your talented kitchen team. Family Meal at Blue Hill has undoubtedly earned a place in our hearts, thanks in large part to Savannah's exceptional hospitality.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is amazing and I was totally blown away.
Was here for a special family event and we couldn't have found a better way to close things out for that weekend. The service was incredible and we were amazed by our entire meal. I went in slightly worried given how much hype, yet I was able to get a reservation. Seemed weird as it's typically hard to with a restaurant like this. My worries were unwarranted and I very very highly recommend this place.

*apologies in advance for the poor quality photos - the lighting wasn't conducive to capturing how brilliant and beautiful these dishes were. I was a bit hesitant going in as there were a few mixed reviews, and of course paying $145 pp, you want to be blown away. I had recently watched the Chef's Table episode on Dan Barber and was intrigued on the vegetable focus, farm to table tasting menu at Family Meal. Also, with the daily menu change you simply do not know what you'll be served. 2 hours later - I was blown away and amazed with the entire meal. The veggies served were unlike any veggies I have tasted before. The entire meal from start to finish was enjoyable. In addition, I was surprised how much fish and meat was served (for those worried about the lack of protein). Highly highly recommend this place. Well deserved Michelin Star, and of course the service matches that distinction. Honestly surprised this place isn't as hyped as it is.
Be the first to Replyi really enjoyed my experience at Family Meal at Blue Hill.
i don't love family meals, but the ambiance was very nice and most of the dishes were totally delicious. we especially enjoyed the raw fish starters. the main beef dish and squash cheesecake dessert were not standouts. cocktails were pretty good. all in all, it was a solid meal and i'd definitely return!

I usually anticipate being a little hungry after fine dining but that was not the case with Family Meal. Our group thoroughly enjoyed dinner here. The portions were generous for fine dining and being able to share dishes family style was a great experience since you don't usually get to do that at fine dining establishments. The service was impeccable. The meal was a great value and experience. I look forward for coming back to try the new menu!

Perfect meal from top to bottom, and the service was top-notch. We went for my partner's birthday and they made a gluten-free birthday cake. Very attentive and accomodating to food restrictions. The ambiance was as sweet as ever. Just a New York gem.

What a great experience shared among friends! I'm a huge proponent of family style dining and it's made even easier when the menu is set for you! The menu changes based on the fresh ingredients that are available for around 145/person not including tip and tax. We brought 2 bottles of alcohol. There's a 50 dollars per bottle corkage fee and their only rule is the bottle cannot be available at the restaurant. They were very kind to us when one of us broke this rule. We started off with a beautiful plate of cauliflower tempura, peas and peppers with a delicious concoction of sweetness in the peppers. This was followed by yellowfish and fluke crudo. The fluke came with a delicious mole like sauce. Then we were surprised by a fish stew, warm bread with cheese and rye butter as well as some squash. We finished it off with potatoes, beef and lettuce. The dessert was a squash cheesecake that was just ok. Overall, I felt like this was a great experience for a nice communal meal set in a very laid back comfortable dining environment. Was the food the most amazing I've ever had? No. But the quality, the thoughtfulness, the ease of everything made it a 5/5 experience.

Food is always incredible and brings me back 10 years after moving away from NYC. However, without the service it would just be another great restaurant in a city with loads. The service makes it the place that my wife and I will always return to. It's been 15 years since we started coming to Blue Hill. Let's shoot for another 15.

You remember those movies where they show the quintessential cozy restaurant, tucked away in the middle of the village in Manhattan; it's fall and slightly chilly, everyone's bundled outside but people are having a lovely dinner in a warmly lit restaurant? That's Family Meal - the perfect farm to table restaurant here in the city, nothing pompous, but elevated yet and relaxed. The food and concept are all based on the famous Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Westchester. Family Meal provides a lovely seasonal tasting menu that changes regularly. Very accommodating to dietary restrictions like vegetarians. The food speaks for itself and is simply delicious. Service, inviting and friendly yet very knowledgeable. Ambiance and setting, well, I think I painted a nice picture in the beginning. It's a must try!

We had a lovely and intimate meal here while sitting at the bar. My husband is vegan and I don't have any restrictions so they were able to accommodate this through their family-style dining experience. We also got the wine pairing, which paired well with each course. Service was great and everyone there were so friendly and inviting. Would definitely come back if we're in the city again!

Highly recommend!! Everything was of top quality ingredients and tasted full of flavors. We chose the vegan and seafood sets to share. Could really tell the chef's attention to detail and creativity in the presentation and depth of flavors. They took our dietary restriction very seriously and nothing had refined sugar, including desserts. They created special yummy desserts made without refined sugar. Servers were all knowledgeable and friendly.
Be the first to ReplyPhenomenal.
Food, service, ambiance, all of it. Dined with my wife (party of two which they recently started to accommodate) who is a vegetarian. We both left very full. They were very kind to compress our tasting a bit since we told them we had to be in and out in two hours. Did not feel overly rushed despite this. Can't wait to go to Stone Barns.

Truly. Highly recommend coming for a special occasion or ANY occasion you need a special night. Danielle was our server and madeour experience incredibly easy and special. You will not regret coming here - especially w a hot date. I promise you that. Major shout out to Danielle - she was so informative about the wine and food. It was an education.PS. Spilled a sauce on my khakis. Told Lucy one of the servers - I got club soda, 2 clean napkins, a shout wipe,Love this place. Will be back asap.
Be the first to ReplyFINALLY! I have been waiting years to try this restaurant
FINALLY! I have been waiting years to try this restaurant after seeing Dan Barber's Chefs Table special on Netflix years ago. The space is minimalistic in the most elegant way. The staff is kind, intelligent and passionate. The food is truly divine and everything I had hoped it would be.We started with a vegetable tar tar that had a beautiful smokiness to it, a radish dish and a delicious fish. The bread course was heavy but tasty. The fighting spinach was new to me! We enjoyed trying that! The salads executed the perfect balance of bitter, sweet, acid, crunch and softness. Dessert was a home run for me. I would love to meet Dan next time he comes into the restaurant. Try out Family Meal and be sure to ask questions about what you're eating! A lot of effort and heart goes into every plate.

Went to Blue Hill for a Holiday splurge! They brought out so many little dishes I couldn't keep up with taking pictures and taking mental notes. So I'll try my best to describe what I remember. Potato chips with golden beet tartare - meh, it was fineSashimi with I think a mushroom sauce? - DeliciousAdorable little red peppers - so sweet! the sauce it came with was amazing - no idea what it was! Sweet potato nuggets - crispy, delicious, not overly sweetCornbread - AMAZING, ONE OF THE BEST ITEMSI think a parfait, but instead of yogurt I think it was whipped creamConsider this a preview of what you might get at Blue Hill. There was definitely a lot more items that were served to us that night. Over all there were a few stand outs, a few things we really didn't like and everything else fell in the middle. For the price tag, I would've wanted to be wowed every time.

Such a great experience! From the moment I made the reservation, the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and accommodated. Being pregnant, I was asked if I had any dietary restrictions or preferences. While I normally wouldn't speak up, because I was asked, I felt comfortable asking for no raw meats/fish. There were also multiple options for mocktails and wines (juices). The food was amazing at every course. We felt educated and informed throughout the entire meal. It was very refreshing to not have to order from a menu. I felt we could settle in and trust the staff.

This place will leave you speechless! I am impressed beyond being impressed with the thoughtfulness of the dishes. There is something here for everyone even picky vegan eaters. I promised my self I would have a good experience. It is difficult to find restaurants that truly care about the quality of food people are consuming. This place is superb and exceptional. Defj I Troy going back again. The ginger tea with fresh pressed ginger was perfectly done. I enjoyed every moment. The staff is courteous and took time to actually have conversations with the patrons. Looking forward to going back again! Thanks so much for the amazing food and good vibes !!

fantastic food to be sure as well as wonderful service and ambiance, but not worth the price tag in my personal opinion.first off, the ambiance is dimly lit and feels very sophisticated. our server was very sweet and knowledgeable as well, and worked previously at the original blue hill farm upstate. for food, i really enjoyed the beet tartare with homemade potato chips as well as the pork shoulder. the spinach was also delicious, probably the best spinach i've ever had (not that the bar is high!) the flavors in every dish are truly very refined and complex, and dining is definitely an experience. while i enjoyed the courses i had at blue hill and i can see the michelin star quality, i personally do not believe it's worth $145 pp + $20 per drink...i've had equally satisfying (and more filling) meals for a much smaller price tag, but i guess that's new york for you!overall, a great experience, but just too high of a price tag for the quantity. probably will not be back myself, but i would recommend coming if you don't mind spending almost $200 pp :)
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite restaurant in New York.
Incredibly clean, healthy, delicious and unique. Words cannot describe- you just have to experience it .

Blue Hill NYC's Family Meal is an exquisite showcasing of local ingredients. The ever-changing menu, highlighting produce and grains, has been delightful to sample over my past three visits. Blue Hill's latest dinner concept is a must visit for NYC foodies and restaurant aficionados.Eating at Family Meal is an exercise in humility and appreciation for the food that is grown around us. As the meal progresses in loose, family-style courses one is exposed to the science of preservation and fermentation, an understanding of the required labor of farming, the seasonality of ingredients, and the creativity and experimental endeavors of the chef. For one to enjoy the meal, the diner has to be open to the ideals of farm-to-table (Blue Hill Farm, nonetheless) rather than the displays of indulgence found at some other high class restaurants. For some, it comes naturally but for others, it may require a suspension of preconceptions. On our past visit to Family Meal, we were wowed by fresh turnips with poppy seed butter, hearty whole wheat bread with sunflower cream and rich whipped butter, mushroom buckwheat donuts, hearty Fighter Spinach, mushrooms, tilefish with sweet, crunchy carrots and ginger, and make-your-own sundaes with maple ice cream and toasted meringue. We were enthralled by the fresh vegetables and grains that were placed before us that incorporated unique flavors, textures, and aromas. To be fair, not every dish over my visits has been my favorite but I appreciate the variety and experimental nature of the menus. The general manager, Jason, and the maitre d, Grace, run an incredible restaurant; they spare no detail in creating a welcoming atmosphere and exciting experience. Jason and Grace have welcomed us on each visit and have made us feel like family. We so appreciate their hard work, attention to detail, and friendship. Finally, Family Meal goes above and beyond to accommodate a number of allergies and dietary restrictions including vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, gluten free, and nut-free. My wife had celiac and cannot eat gluten; Family Meal accommodates her in a way that no other restaurant in the city does. It is unfortunately rare for New York restaurants to so seriously attend to its patron's dietary needs. My wife and I will continue to return to Family Meal, season after season until the pop-up is done. We are so supportive of Blue Hill's vision and mission and are impressed with how spectacular this iteration of the restaurant is. Highly recommended.

**This may just be an issue of personal taste so read on, because you might disagree with me!**It makes me super sad to write this, but I just didn't like the food. It's not that anything was "wrong", I just didn't like it. The menu is extremely vegetable-based, and I thought that would be ok. I like asparagus, broccoli, onions of all sorts, potatoes, yams, cabbage, etc. If you asked me for my two least favorite foods in the world, I would have told you beets and mushrooms. Well, guess what vegetables were in nearly every single dish of the evening? Total bummer.I had similar luck with the cocktail menu, which features 5 drinks. I don't think of myself as an overly picky drinker, but through sheer back luck each option had an ingredient that ruled it out for me. Then we got to dessert. I gave up sweets for lent, so they were kind enough to bring apple slices, pepper jelly, and the only cheese on earth I don't eat... blue cheese.By now I am sure you've decided the blame is on me and not on the restaurant. That is fair. I really do think this may have been terrible luck. I've been fortunate to do several tasting menus in my life and have often not known what would be served. Something like this has never happened to me.First course is slivers - AND I DO MEAN SLIVERS - of raw, pickled vegetables. And although each bite was tiny, I quickly became tired of eating individual bites of pickles. There was also whole wheat bread with whipped lard that would have been 100 times better if it had been salted. The meat course was well cooked but the cut was extraordinarily tough (as in, coudl barely cut with the steak knife) and chewy. This is one of the most expensive meals we've had in our lives, including Michellin star restaurants in Paris, so needless to say I was really disappointed that it didn't turn out how we'd hoped.

The big thing to know is that right now they are doing Family Style (which is just what it sounds like, you share things by passing them around family style) and not a tasting menu. So this means the base is about $115 for the food and decently reasonable fancy wine/cocktail bar prices for alcoholic drinks.BUT with that... YOU GET ALL THE AMAZING GLORY OF BLUE HILL. - Food: The most amazing vegetables and meats with such rich flavor that you have ever tasted. The dessert was simply the best of Americana. We pretty much cried out of delight.- The Service: Super exciting servers that played in on our jokes and really made us feel special- The Ambiance: Given the space limitations, it had a truly homey and lovely feel Great For:- Dinners after getting a new job- Close friends and family having a bonding experiencing- Making your sister drive from Jersey for this- A managable splurge- Date #21 Bad For:- Break ups- Frenemy get together- People who struggle to share - People with a small stomach
Be the first to ReplySuper delicious veggie centric family style restaurant.
Really liked the food and atmosphere. Will definitely make reservations for the Blue Hill Farm in Tarrytown this summer when New York vegetables are at their peak.
Be the first to ReplyI didn't think I would enjoy eating so many vegetables, but
I didn't think I would enjoy eating so many vegetables, but yet - here we are, me eating and enjoying. Blue Hill is currently serving up Family Meal. Prefix menu, everyone share the plates in the middle. I started off with a glass of their Syrah, which was indeed good. The waiter said he gave a "chunky" pour, which is a funny way to describe a pour so I had a good laugh, but indeed it was not chunky whatsoever...Enough with the wine talk, let's talk about the courses. Pickled veggies magically appeared. It was a cleanser and tasty. Followed by bread with amazing dips. I held off as to not be too full. The stars came shortly after which were the mushroom donut and potatoes. Both, imho, best in class and creative. The one protein dish , which was pork, perfectly cooked, tender and juicy, accompanied by beans that were to die for. We concluded with some deserts which was rather lackluster but it did fill that portion of the stomach reserved for deserts. Service throughout the meal was top notch. Venue is relatively small, but that's mostly true for many restaurants in nyc. They do have another location next to their actual farm which I would love to visit. Overall, a solid experience and I would recommend.
