Ridiculously expensive for a mediocre dessert
What a disappointment the sachertorte was. With tax and tip we paid about $20.00 for one slice of sachertorte and it was mediocre. Moist but very little chocolate flavor or apricot. So much hype for a very forgettable pastry.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience
I wanted to enter on Sunday and it was impossible. There was a huge line. I returned on Tuesday and entered immediately. Frankly I loved it. Very good pastries and coffee. Although there is also food. But I only came for coffee and dessert. You can not lose this
Be the first to ReplyVery quiet place and delicious breakfast
A somewhat confidential address, a haven of peace a stone's throw from the MET and the Guggenheim. Excellent breakfast (the one for 34 dollars): brioche, bread, jam, marble, two fried eggs with bacon and hot drink + orange juice. Nice setting, good service and you can visit the Klimt farm in the same building. However, the exhibition is prohibited for children under 11 years old. I highly recommend
Be the first to ReplyWonderful breakfast in an intimate atmosphere where all are warmly welcomed.
I had a delicious breakfast served by very friendly and accommodating team members in late March 2024. I arrived just after opening and was directed by Hector and Malone through the security check with the MOST wonderful welcome. I was in clean, walking attire and was unsure if I met the dress code. They said I was always welcome and genuinely meant it. I was directed to the cafe by another friendly gentleman and then the host confirmed that I could use contactless payment before being seated. You can pay contactlessly at the barista's station. I was seated near the window as it was approximately 10 minutes after opening and had a wonderful conversation with a regular patron whose requests the staff accommodated with a smile. My breakfast was the perfect portion size and my Viennese Hot Chocolate with a shot of espresso was delicious. I look forward to returning for lunch or an afternoon snack.
Be the first to ReplyHelpful and prompt service
After seeing the Woman in Gold, we made a late lunch stop since we needed some here! My kraut and brats were spicy and delicious.Although my wife's salad was excellent, we didn't mind the expensive costs because we had friendly, timely service.
Be the first to ReplyLovely evening in the restaurant and the museum. On cabaret night
The food was quite good and well managed at a dinner show for about 50 people. The staff was well poised and trained to make the changing of courses rather seamless and to handle the extras of drinks and coffees that were added. all this was finely tuned for the 1 1/2 hour performance. . they were professional snd well organized from start yo the end.
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent trouvaille.
My main motivation for coming here was Ronald S. Lauder, Neue Galerie. However, the Museum only opens at 11:00 a.m. I then proceeded to the coffee shop. To my astonishment, I was able to locate a genuine "Wiener Kaffee" in the center of New York. accompanied with Wiener Sachertorte and Apfelstrudel! Thus, you may now enjoy this genuine style without having to travel to Vienna.
Be the first to ReplyViennese experience- delicious and heavy
A real Viennese experience. Played that fit the freezing cold weather. Goulash with shpezels- heavy and tasty, sausage with mustard, and schnitzel- all good and all heavy The deserts - linzer torte and apple strudel with whipped cream closed a good meal
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Viennese hot chocolate
Stopped by this gem for the first time after visiting the Met. We probably waited about 20-30 minutes in total, but the wait was worth it. The interior transports you to a charming old European café. The Viennese hot chocolate was to die for.
Be the first to ReplyA great place to get the best Wiener Schnitzel in America
Wonderful Restaurant, it took me back to Germany, the Wiener Schnitzel was out of this world, I loved the coffee and the pastries, besides the place look like a Palace great to come for Brunch or dinner with your friends. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplySurreal experience: skillfully executed Wiener Schnitzel on 5th avenue
A Schnitzel like this is not easy to be made. Tastful and thin crusty batter. To find something this nice in Europe you have to be lucky and they do it here in the lovely caffe. Also cakes and deserts are all great. This place deserved 5 star and plus.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Cafe
Cafe Sabarsky Museum Mile (and it’s vicinity) has some pleasant restaurants, but Cafe Sabarsky is one of our favorites. Located within the jewel box, Galerie Neue, Cafe Sabarsky highlights the museums Austrian/ German artwork with very good Austrian/ German food. Absent museum membership, be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait, in line, outside, for breakfast, lunch or coffee and pastries (reservations are, however, accepted for dinner). The menu is uniquely Austrian/ German with a focus on dessert and Viennese coffees. Salads, sausages, outrageously scrumptious dumplings, chicken, delicious pretzels, and soups are also offered. The Austrian cheese dumplings over cabbage are SO DELICIOUS and always devoured as are the crepes. The Viennese coffee is also enjoyed. The cake/ pastry display is very appetizing. The room is small, classically elegant, very European and utterly civilized. The service is so very pleasant, warm and professional (Beata is a sweet gem!). We adore Galerie Neue, and Cafe Sabarsky is such an extraordinarily lovely spot to relax and refuel during a day at the museum.
Be the first to ReplyA huge disappointment
This is not worth the money. We were there yesterday and the wait staff was rude and unpleasant and the food mediocre. I cannot recommend and will not return. It used to be lovely but not any more.
Be the first to ReplyLike being in a cafe in Germany
This little place is a great find and it was happenstance that we checked it out. The Gallerie is wonderful and we were there to see the artwork. The main cafe is on the ground floor (and people were waiting to get in). There is a smaller cafe, same food, still cute, in the basement and we noticed that there wasn't a line so we hopped in and were seated quickly. Great menu, wines also available. We had two wurst platters and a torte for desert plus coffee. Everything was sublime. They also serve some sandwiches and salads. It took me back to lunch in a cafe in Austria or Germany. Great escape on a winter day.
Be the first to ReplyA PERFECT evening!
Old world charm & grandeur! The dining room is located inside a late 1800's mansion which is now the Neue Gallery. Gorgeous dark wood paneled walls, herringbone floors, high ceilings, & huge windows overlooking the Park and E86th Street. The service was top-notch and the food was superb. The experience was all around perfection!
Be the first to ReplyFood great. Dessert ok. Nathan (waiter) nice and helpful!
We enjoyed our experience at this restaurant. The trout crepes were a 10/10! I’d go back just for those. We also thought the butter lettuce salad and butternut squash were wonderful. Nathan our server helped us feel welcomed and was generous in his explanations and making the customer feel valued.
Be the first to ReplyNO MANAGER POOR SERVICE
The problem with Cafe Sabarsky is the unpleasant and hostile manager Gerhard Kaltseis. I have never been in a New York restaurant where the check can reach close to $100 per person where the manager, in this case Gerhard Kaltseis, is not to be seen at all nor anyone ask if your are satisfied with the meal. The place has the gift of relying on tourists who will visit most likely just once so service and good manners from a maitre'd or manager like Gerhard Kaltseis are un-needed. The Austrians aren't famed for hospitality or warmth but this is a New York restaurant and badly needs to replace some staff. It would improve the atmosphere and make dining a more pleasant experience.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful dinner
I had reservations for dinner and was promptly seated. Service was excellent, even though they were turning the tables over, I didn't feel rushed.
The setting with dark paneled walls, large floral arrangement and small number of tables was delightful on a rainy evening. I thoroughly enjoyed the Hungarian beef goulash with spatzel, the pumpernickel bread served with dinner and a slice of sachertorte. I was tempted by a couple of other deserts but wanted to taste a sachertore. Servings were generous, but not excessively so.
I appreciated that all of the staff were masked and those wearing cloth masks were double-masked.
I hope to try their crepes with smoked trout and horseradish at another time.
Too Popular to Be Good Now
Went for a late lunch today. This meant standing in line for 20 minutes.
Staff is clearly off their game. They seemed burnt out.
We were seated and then neglected. Wursts were not as good as in the past. Served the wrong coffee specialty: coffee buried in foam instead of millchkafe.
Maybe when the tourists leave....
Bad visit
Place is usually good. But today 5/5/22:
Came in, was told by headwaiter they close 4:30. Looked at my watch -- 4:07PM; looked like plenty of time. Ordered, decided to skip dessert. Waited; waited some more, kept looking at watch; it took until 4:2X for our entrees to arrive, and I kept busy making contingency plans. It spoiled the whole cafe atmosphere. We were THEN told it's really 5PM. Ordered dessert, paid, left
A good experience but overpriced
I had breakfast here in March 2022 before visiting the Neue Galerie. Cafe Sabarsky does evoke the ambiance of a Viennese cafe. It was a good experience but it was overpriced. I paid $30 for Viennese coffee (latte), fresh-squeezed orange juice and a basket of breads with jams. The service was good and it was a very cold day so I had the opportunity to warm up.
Be the first to ReplyElegant setting for a delicious breakfast
The Cafe Sabarsky is an absolute delight! I went breakfast -- delicious food, wonderful service, and an elegant setting. Perfect!

Cafe Trap
Overpriced. Stingy portions. Not worth the cost. Felt “had” after being there and paying such ridiculous prices for a cup of coffee and a small slice of cake.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a treat!
Makes you think you are in a café in Europe. We stopped by for a quick lunch before visiting the Neue Museum, and it got us in the mood. Good food, reasonably priced, efficiently served. How can you beat bratwurst, sauerkraut and potatoes? For a museum restaurant, this is great.
