Steak-A-Thon of Flavor
Greeted by the hostess in a flattering tight black dress, we were ushered to our table, with smiles on our faces. A round of cocktails , a half dozen oysters, an order of calamari, and we were on our way. The appetizers were fresh attractively served, and enjoyed by all. Bronzino filets were the special of day (ordered by the wives) and the steaks (Delmonico and NY Strip) were prepared as requested. A perfect setting for an excellent evening. Never rushed, allowed to relax, and we could actually hear each other talk (a rarity in many restaurants today). A bit pricey, the coffee was served luke warm, and all sides were extra. Four stars instead of five, but that won’t stop us from going back.

Was excited to try this steak house, but disappointed with the rude staff, starting with the Maitre d’ who had zero personality and was a jerk. Crab cake tasted like pure old bay. Steak was just average. I won’t be back.

So disappointed! We dined at Char about a month ago and were very impressed. We ordered off the special menu and the waiter, Pierre, was very helpful and directed us toward excellent selections. So we decided to go back to celebrate our anniversary. Big mistake. We should have had a clue when we were the only people in the dining room. We selected two items from the special menu only to learn that they were "out of them." The substitution for a third was not to our liking. My husband ordered a lobster dish that was, frankly, inedible. My steak was done correctly but was tender in some spots and tough in others. The "loaded potato" was stone cold. We were later told that there had been problems recently and that there was a new chef. They are going to have to raise their game a lot to get us back there again.

Crab cake yummy but came out twice raw on the middle. Too noisy. Management did nothing about the people who brought small unruly kids. Dont want to go out, spend $300 for dinner to have to lost to kids yelling or parents letting kids on tablets....get a baby sitter.
Be the first to ReplyNever go here under any circumstances.
The most dissapointing experience ever. Very rude hostess that tried to seat next to a family with very rowdy children. When we said we would like another location, she said there wasn't any other location. The place was near empty! We left on a very special occasion. Screw this place! I will never go back. They are rude and don;t care about your business. We have been going here for over 25 years. Never been treated so badly and with such disrespect.

Great atmosphere and good staff. The seafood tower was very good, the quality was great. The quality of the meats was poor. The lamb chops were tough n tasteless. The bone-in ribeye was miserable and very tough….I was only able to eat 1/4. I suggested charging more and having higher quality meats.

Service excellent. Food very very good. My crab starter was crazy good. Staff knowledeable, too. Thank you.

I noticed alot of reviews complaining about service and cold or burnt steaks, I have to say our service was fine and the temperature on all of our steaks was perfect. My 20oz cowboy ribeye was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyWorst Dining Experience of My Life!!!
DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!! The worst dining experience I’ve ever had. I ordered a $120 steak and needed an electric saw to cut through it. Not only that, but when it came out it was ice cold below room temperature. I can go to Outback Steakhouse for a quarter of the price and get a steak that comes out sizzling hot, tender, and better quality than this place serves for a quarter of the price. They claimed that the Tomahawk steak was aged- it was aged alright, like shoe leather!!!! Please save your money and don’t give these arrogant people your business. They don’t care about the customer. I wouldn’t even feed the food they serve to my pet.
Be the first to ReplyDon't waste your money
The weather was perfect for dining outdoors and we were celebrating an anniversary. Our mood was jovial and festive. Then came the food. A tomahawk steak was so tough that it needed to be sawed rather than sliced. A grilled chicken sandwich with bacon was too heavily spiced and greasy. Water was served at room temperature and without ice. Pieces of lemon were old and unappetizing. French fries were soggy. Mashed potatoes were room temperature. These issues were brought, in a civil tone, to the attention of staff managers. They were dismissive and callous to our concerns with a level of arrogance that was unbelievable. I would give them no stars. Our unpleasant experience was a complete waste of time and money.
Be the first to ReplyGreat steakhouse with excellent service and reasonable prices
My wife and I dined here on a beautiful Saturday night. We both ordered the Delmonico steak and shared other sides. The highlight of the meal was the escargot appetizer. The escargot was prepared with a pesto based butter sauce rather than garlic butter. I thought it was incredible. The service and ambience were both excellent as well.

Wasted Money, time and energy, Cheap place and low quality steak. Our server was so lowsy and bad. He was yelling when taking order, I mean he was speaking so loud. Their steak is the worst part. It was over cooked and burnt. Nothing was good in this restaurant. We literally wasted our money. Their dinning area doesnt give a feel of a fine dine. Their prices are/were out of this world. In short this place is big NO NO whether its red bank or raritan. I wont go there again even if food is free. I want my money back :(
Be the first to ReplyTasty but.....
Dinner at Char. Statrers of tuna and escargot, delightful. A tequila cocktail was lovely but, no napkin and slippery glass left the table in a puddle of water. Wagu beef came rare and cooks on a cast iron platter, nice but coursed with much grizzle at 109 bucks, disappointing from a steak house. Lobster Mac is so good but tail was over done and a bit tough. At the price point, food should be perfect.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding, ask for Pierre as you waiter.
The food was amazing, the ambiance fun and welcoming, with elegance. Having Pierre as our waiter made it a delicious and very memorable evening. His suggestions were spot on, excellent wine selection and food choices. There were seven in our group, we all ordered something different, each plate was cooked perfectly, seasoned with expertise. I highly recommend the stuffed mushrooms, best I have ever had, stuffed with a large lump of crab, so good. The wedge salad was big enough for two, it was also excellent. We shared a huge piece of warm bread pudding for dessert, a must! Thank you Pierre.

I came here with my parents for my birthday. I had been here before, my parents had not. My mom (who is a big healthy eater and fish freak was not thrilled at the initial choice I had told her). When she got there, the attitude changed as soon as she heard about the Bronzino fish special and was given the bread selection with a popover. Her eyes lit up. As per normal, the steak I ordered was cooked perfectly to medium rare, as was my father's tuna entree. The alcohol menu is also extensive to complement food. I always recommend Char in Red Bank. Also, Angel is a delight as a server -- I hope that anyone who goes there gets the luxury of being cared for by him. Attentive, friendly, but not invasive. Top waiter qualities.
Be the first to ReplyWill never return - horrible experience
Char was a significant disappointment, primarily caused by an interaction with one of the floor managers. My New York sirloin was overcooked (I asked for medium-well and the steak came out well done); a steakhouse should be able to cook to the correct temperature. Upon notifying the waiter, the floor manager came over, pulled out her iPhone flashlight to inspect my steak, and told me that she saw pink in the meat (it was entirely grey). She further explained what constitutes meat temperatures in a patronizing manner; I was embarrassed for her as she sounded foolish. The manager lacked the professionalism and decorum required for the service industry. She was condescending and rude and a poor representation as management for any organization.
My wife and I have spent years in the hospitality industry as restaurant managers. This manager lacked the skill and competency to address my initial concern. Instead, she made the situation worse, causing my wife and me to leave our anniversary dinner without finishing our meal as we were appalled by the manager’s behavior.
I would never recommend Char Steakhouse to anyone and will go out of my way to highlight the poor service received.
Great Char!
Food was excellent and the wait staff was amazing! They have the best packs of matches to light your smokes after dinner and enjoy broad street!

We had meals at the bar, which was beautiful. The bartenders were very friendly, the drinks were good and the food was excellent. Totally recommend Char.
Be the first to ReplyReasonable steak place
I'd like to say it was excellent, but it was average to good; not excellent. The space is quite nice, well decorated, lit very well, comfortable tables and chairs. The bar is pretty nice to sit in and await being seated. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. Waiter came by and introduced himself, but then disappeared for about 10 minutes. It wasn't that busy, so we were a little confused by it. Took our drink order, talked about specials and then disappeared. No bread or anything, and drinks took a good while. When he returned, we wanted to order, but he disappeared after delivering the drinks. We flagged down another staff to get him back. A little odd practice, but we ordered and then started eating. Salads and appetizers were quite good. My wife's steak was also quite good. I must have made a mistake ordering; was told that there was just one of a cut I wanted left after first being told there were none. Odd also at a steak place. Our sides were good and everyone else got a nice looking steak. Mine, however, was a fair representation of gristle and silverskin. I mangled it up and ate what I could, but it was a disappointment to say the least. I pointed it out, but was told I had taken the last one (as if that was an excuse). We will likely return sometime; it's close and we love the town, but I can't say I'm excited about it.
Be the first to ReplyA Wonderful Culinary Experience
After an exruciating experience at a glorified pizzeria called Buono Sera, we walked over to Char. The people were kind and the food was exceptional. I had a seered tuna , perfectly executed and flavorful. Our server, a lovely young woman was gracious and provided excellent service. Their steaks are incredible. This was once Ashes the cigar bar, but I have to tell you that from the "ashes" rose a Phoenix of a restaurant. Truly a culinary treat!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food, Great Ambiance, Great Staff
Char is a little pricey, but delivers value. The meat selections are its specialty, but I had the broiled Brussells Sprouts and a salad, and both were tremendous. the interior is very well-appointed, and the wait staff are very accommodating. We went on a busy night without reservations, and they made room for us.

Two story restaurant is beautiful. Steaks were awesome with the steakhouse sides. Good crab cakes too.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing Customer Service
We received a $200 gift certificate in August 2020 and unfortunately misplaced it ( completely our fault) . After numerous times contacting the restaurant , they basically instructed us we are out of luck . We had all information regarding the purchase of the gift card including credit card, date/ time of purchase and who at Char helped with the transaction. I will not be recommending this restaurant moving further as they have little respect for patrons .

I had my fathers 75 birthday dinner with some of our family. This was the first time here and heard good things. We didn't notice if there was any parking for the restaurant since it was on a Sunday and we found street parking however we did notice other restaurants had valet parking. Our reservations we're for 5:30 when we arrived the place was mostly empty with a few people at the bar. My fist impression was the place was very chic and the space was very open at the bar you could see the second floor (I'm not sure if it was a party room or part of the regular restaurant). The bar drinks were delicious and it seemed that they had top shelf alcohol. They bar area had good music playing and it looked and felt like a club (very nice). Looking area the atmosphere was mixed I say from late twenties to a couple around sixty , so you had a diverse age group. Then I noticed three gentleman grab chairs and one was wearing a baseball hat and it was on backwards. I'm thinking this is supposed to be a fine dining restaurant, I guess not then I started to look around and noticed the attire from the patrons and it was a mix of t-shirts, plaid shirts and dress shirts. So moving on we sat at a round table with extension leafs since the table was square and head for extension leaves lift from underneath. This is where the fine dining experience want fell off the charts. As we are sitting at the table the silverware starts sliding off and falling on the floor at least five times before we started to eat we made light of it but it was quite annoying. So we ordered our food and it seemed as if they were pushing the alcohol a great deal which was somewhat annoying and the two things on the alcohol menu that we asked for they were out of stock on I'm not sure if the restaurant is starting to cut back but nonetheless we moved forward with the dinner we just ordered different items. When our appetizers came we realized how disruptive those table wings were going to be (they were sagging towards you) that's why the utensils were sliding off. With that said they place soup on the table but not in front of my father (75) but about twelve inch's away from him (it was place on the solid table (so this made it evident that they knew of this condition plus the gap was at least 1/2 inch). Now all of the plates were served and now we noticed the dishes are so far away. I was mortified that my father had a eat soup and the bowl was 12 inches away. My father placed his folded napkin down on the table to try to make up the difference and the waiter brought a place mat on top of the napkin AND still my father was unable to have his bowl in front of him to eat it was really unbelievable. I had to get up and complain to the manager, she was sorry and was willing to move us but you know the embarrassment to relocate food, drinks etc. to a different table so we just stayed there. It was sooooo annoying to eat when your dish is so far away, my brother had the juice from the steak leak off the dish and off the table onto his pants (I didn't want to beat a dead horse but just ridiculous). At the end they covered out two desserts which was appreciated (I don't want to make it seem as if I wanted a free dinner for the eight of us) so we were greatful. The food was very good all around but there's so many better restaurants to go to then to deal with nonsense like a cheap table and the owner/managers inability to address this problem. I would never go back to this restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyGift Cards
One year ago, I had purchased a $150.00 gift card to Char Steak House in Red Bank for two friends of mine as a Christmas Gift. I had eaten there twice, and the food and service were outstanding. Here is the major issue. My friend’s wife called me and asked if I had used a debit/credit card to purchase the $150.00 gift card to Char Steak House. I advised her that I couldn’t recall. She advised that she and her husband went to dinner at Char the previous night and the gift card had 0 balance. I was taken aback, and advised that it couldn't be true. I don’t want to repeat myself but, here’s the actual incident. My friends recently went to dinner at Char in Red Bank to eat dinner and by the way, they loved the food and service. Their bill came and my friend gave their waiter the $150.00 gift card. The waiter came back and informed my friend that the card had a "0 balance." My buddy advised the waiter, that it couldn't be the case. My friend spoke with the manager, Drew and he comped their deserts and also Drew advised my friend to come back for drinks. My friend had spend over $200.00 for a great meal. I think Drew should have honored the gift card. My friend gave me Drew’s number for me to call.
I called Drew the next day and he was aware of what had occurred. Drew advised me that the lady whom I purchased the gift card from failed to activate it and log it in a book. I advised Drew that it shouldn’t be my nor my friend’s problem. I also advised Drew that he should had take off the $150.00 from my friend’s bill. Drew said that he couldn’t do that. I then asked if I could have a refund for $150.00 and Drew advised to bring in a receipt from the gift card purchase, and he’d refund my money. I advised Drew that I may have paid cash for the gift card and Drew advised that he still needed proof because I could be lying. At that point, I hung up the phone. My issue with Drew was that he had admitted that the person failed to put the card through and failed to write it down in the book. Clearly, he should have taken $150.00 off of the bill.
The next day, I went to my Bank and I advised the Bank manager what had occurred at Char Steak House. The Bank manager, went back to my bank records from last year and thank God, she found the $150.00 purchase that I had made at Char Steak House in Red Bank. My Bank manager then printed out and highlighted the bank statement from last year as proof of my purchase.
Later on that day, I went back to Char Steak House and I spoke with a different manager, Jordan, and I advised her about what had occurred. Jordan was also made aware that I had spoken to Drew the day before. I had to admit, I came in there with an attitude due to Drew not doing the right thing. However, I didn’t yell nor curse at anyone. Jordan kept insisting that my friends had used the card and I advised Jordan that they had not. Jordan and another employee looked in the computer and logbook and my card number was never activated nor written down in the book. Once again, Jordan insisted that my friends had used the card, and once again I advised Jordan that they had not. I further advised Jordan that I would not have gone to the lengths I had to prove my story, if I thought I was wrong. Finally, Jordan did put the $150.00 back on my debit card.
I want the customers to be aware of the gift card procedures at Char SteakHouse in Red Bank, because what I purchased could hardly be called "a gift."
