One of Tampaโs Top Steakhouses. Lousy Location.
Tampa Bay is known for its large variety of great steakhouses. Council Oak is definitely in my top five. Maybe top 3. Its location is one of its big pitfalls. The restaurant is located in the bowels of the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel. So, whether you drive & park or take a ride share, plan on walking 100s of yards through a smoke filled casino to reach your destination. HOWEVER: thatโs the only major problem. Exquisite service from seating us to dessert. The hostess to the busser and server, were all top notch. The best complimentary bread selection I can imagine. My wife and I shared crab cakes. Very meaty. Not much filler. Our daughter had delicious French onion soup. For dinner we had two filet mignon and one lamb chops. We shared asparagus (freshest and largest Iโve tasted in Tampa). Sautรฉed mushrooms. And Brussels sprouts. All were delish. So was the cheesecake we shared for dessert. Council Oak has a decent wine selection and wonderful craft cocktails. Plan on spending about $200 pp including tax and tip for a meal like we had. That includes cocktails and a bottle of wine. Up sides: great food and service. Down side: location. Itโs inconvenient to drive to, walk through and it lacks the intimacy of a stand-alone steakhouse.
Be the first to ReplyTo bad, but if you want it done right, you should do it yourself!
I just cooked a $15 ribeye from Publix that had almost as much meat, more flavor and was more tender than the $120,00 fatty long bone that I had a council oak! And I cooked it right! I ordered medium they brought me very rare, I sent it back and they brought me very very well done and dry.
Be the first to ReplyGreat steakhouse!
Staff was very friendly and we were seated immediately without a reservation. My husband and I both had the 8 ounce filet, it was cooked to perfection and had the best flavor. The iceberg salad and baked potato was delicious. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyVery Disappointed with Council Oak
We celebrated an early birthday for my husband on January 30th, 2024 at Council Oak, we have been going for years here and always had a nice dinner. Well this time when we went we ordered the calamari that my husband found a hair tangled in with the breadcrumbs, so gross it turned our stomachs. But that wasn't the only thing, the french onion soup was always good, this time it was like soapy onion soup, our waiter and the chef were aware of this and also agreed. Next we ordered the surf and turf special, the filet mignon was not cooked right, they took it back and killed the steak, what a way to ruin a good piece of meat. One part was well done and the rare. I don't know what happen to Council Oak but I think they are going downhill. Management was told about this, he visited our table offered us a glass of wine, we already had a bottle on the table. He never revisited us nor did we see any wine. What they should really do is invite us back and redo the whole dinner on them. Horrible experience.

We were staying at the hard rock in Tampa for a couple of days and decided to go to this restaurant expecting a high end steakhouse. We ordered an appetizer of fried calamari, the scallops entree and ny strip. Our friends ordered their meals too. We have ventured to many high end steakhouses Keens in NYC and Peter Lugers in Long Island. Among several others. Our calamari was over cooked and way too salty. Everyoneโs meal came out except my husband who tried to give him the wrong meal. He had to wait an additional 10 min for his food to come out. The mashed potatoes were way too salty. They did come over and try to give him new mashed potatoes that were warm when his food did arrive and they were just as salty. The food itself other than what was stated above was delicious. My seared scallops meal was delicious and his NY strip was delicious. As were the others. When it came to the bill we asked that he separate it between the 3 couples. Bill came back and he split it 3 ways. We were sitting as couples and should have asked us in the beginning. Have to say would think twice about going again.
Be the first to ReplySunday Brunch not worth the money !
Council Oak generally has good food so we thought we would try their Sunday brunch. The menu looked great with prime rib, sea bass, stone crab claws etc. In actuality, it was quite disappointing the so called prime rib was tough as shoe lather and tasteless the sea bass had a very potent fish taste unlike seabass I have had in the past. The only positives were the oysters and desert table. Not worth the $90.00 we paid per person not counting the tip.
Be the first to ReplyDate night Council Oak in Tampa
Hubby and I had a great experience at Council Oak. From the moment we walked in the ambiance and service was wonderful. Nice hot towels were brought to us. We started with a nice bottle of wine, calamari and we split a Caesar salad, for dinner we had the NY strip and the pork chop, we also did a side of garlic mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts with bacon, everything was cooked to perfection. We mentioned that we were celebrating something and although we didn't order dessert, our waiter went over and above bringing us a glass of champagne and mini espresso truffles.
Be the first to ReplyHow do you like your noise?
The food was excellent. My steak was perfect. My husband's salmon was wonderful, and my cousin's scallops were delicious. So why only two stars? The atmosphere was terrible, and the service was worse. There must be no sound absorbing material in the restaurant. I've never been in such a loud restaurant. Music was also piped in, and you could hear the kitchen noise. We had to almost yell at each other for conversation. It was a relief to get in the elevator and escape the noise of the restaurant. It would also help if the doors to the restaurant were left closed to keep out some of the smoke smell. Our waiter kept trying to suggest very expensive bottles of wine. We asked for a wine list half a dozen times before he got one. We had to insist. After our food came, he disappeared. It took a while to get the check. There are too many other fine dining restaurants in Tampa to deal with smoke, noise, and poor service.
Be the first to ReplyLooks classier than it really is. If you like cubes of barely cooked fat on your salad, you may be happy here.
We both ordered a Chopped Salad which looked appealing on the menu with โromaine, red onion, grilled corn, bacon, blue cheese, dry cranberries, candied walnuts, creamy white balsamic dressingโ. It was almost entirely lettuce and the โbaconโ was awful. Just little cubes of barely cooked fat. We told our server who then brought a few burnt cubes which we almost as unappealing. The manager came over to check if all was satisfactory and we told him about the bacon. He kindly replied that he loves it and walked away. This may be picky but I ordered a beer and it was brought in a bottle. The venue is sophisticated enough that I shouldnโt have had to ask for a glass. I submit a 3/5 review simply because the crab cakes and the music were very good.

Something was definitely off for an early 75th birthday celebration for my husband while his son and his girlfriend were visiting from NC. I called to confirm that it was a special occasion and that it was noted on our reservation. We were placed at a table right outside the door of the kitchen with the constant in and out of food runners. Ordered a salad without bacon as an entree since I am a vegetarian and it arrived with lots of chunks of bacon. Husband's filet mignon was to be cooked medium and arrived still mooing. Garlic mashed potatoes were hard and sticking together, not whipped and fluffy. Scallop dish was good, but the mussels and clams were overcooked and cold. There was a schmear of something on the plate - not sure what it was. There was never any mention of my husband's birthday. For a so called upscale fine dining restaurant, there is room for improvement..............
Be the first to ReplyPOOR DINING MANAGEMENT TAMPA
Debbie Nicoludis Council Oak Steaks & Seafood. Has terrible management anymore ever since Covid was over. They do not care how much you spend they will not give you courteous service. And now they start reserving all the seats at the bar on a waitlistโฆ ๐ก Waitlist? ? They always lie about who is in front of you on the waitlist. They always have empty seats sitting open for half an hour at a time and still refuse to let you sit down and buy a meal ! the manager should be fired ! ๏ฟผ
Be the first to ReplyBeware of the angry Manager at Council Oaks.........
Beware!!!! There is a manager by the name of David, who works at Council Oaks, and who acts like a reining dictator of this establishment. As someone who has been going to Council Oaks for over seven years pre-Covid, I have never seen anyone act in such a degrading manner towards patrons. He does not deserve to have the title of Manager in a place that is considered to be Fine-Dining. A waitress made a mistake and seated me and my guests at a table that was already reserved by someone else, this manager decided to tell me and my guest to leave from our seats, while he offered no other seating options to us as a solution. While we tried to explain that we were told to sit there by the waitress, he threatened to put us out of Council Oaks for not "cooperating". To make matters worse, he called security and asked security to put us out of the establishment when we tried to reason with him a little longer than he preferred. As a manager, it was David's job to seat us, but he was nowhere to be found when we walked in the doors. We waited 15 minutes for our table to be cleaned, only to have David tell us that we could not sit there. David decided to make a public spectacle of himself to prove a point in front of many other customers, while he demanded that we leave the table or get put out of the venue by security. Furthermore, David would not let the bartender or security try to diffuse the situation, he was convinced that putting us out of the establishment was the best solution for his peace of mind. His public display of aggression, loud and condescending behavior and tone would shock any guest if they knew how easily this matter could have been resolved with a much more professional and considerate manager in many other restaurants. Think about this, Fine-Dining, slow night, several empty tables available to offer as a solution to keep all customers happy, and you have an angry manager with the audacity to put patrons out of the establishment as a solution to a mistake that an employee of his did regarding something as simple as seating arrangement protocols. Unbelievable.
Be the first to ReplyGood luck booking a reservation of 5 or more
I called over a month in advance to book a reservation for 5 guests. I also followed up each week to confirm the reservation. Somehow, when I called today, they have no record of my reservation and no longer can fit in our group, who were looking forward to dining here next week. Disappointing from a customer service perspective, this review has no reflection on the quality of the food.
Be the first to ReplyWe ate there while staying at the Hotel.
The steaks were average. I have had better in lower priced places. Either the steaks were tough or the knifes were extremely dull. The service was exceptional. There was no ambiance. It was loud. The noise came from both the guests the adjacent casino. Not a romantic place for an anniversary.
Be the first to ReplyIโve had better for less money.
Had heard great things about this restaurant so was a bit disappointed in some of the dishes. We were a large group of 11 so had the opportunity to taste many dishes. The escargot and the lump crab appetizers were very good. Bacon was really fatty, so didnโt care the rubbery texture. The chopped salad was tasty and the bread basket was full of very good assorted breads. I will say the steaks were delicious and everyone who ordered steak was pleased. $80 for the 16 oz rib special. Two of us ordered the salmon and we both didnโt care for it. A touch overcooked but it was making any real flavor other than an abundance of salt. The horseradish sauce was a bit strong our server said it was โvery mildโ in the sauce. The โpotatoโ portion of the dish was almost non existent and was served very cold. At $49 it was a waste. Butter cake was good, flaming ice cream desert was a great presentation and very boozy. Creme brรปlรฉe was just average. Service was very good. Said and done, my share for 2 entrees, 1 salad, 1 app, 1 dessert 3 cocktails, 2 glasses of wine, with tip was just under $400. Iโve had much better for a lot less money.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Steakhouse
This is one of the best steakhouses in the Tampa Bay area. All of their food is excellent, however the stand out is the 34 oz long bone ribeye (rare). The French onion soup could not be better. Finish your dinner with the superb butter cake. The service is efficient and totally professional.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service!
We have eaten at this Restaurant many times in the past few years. Our Family including our two children really enjoy the menu and service we have had! One of the Best Steak and Seafood Restaurants in the SouthEast in my Opinion. I think the others are overrated.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Service and Food!!!
Awesome service and food! Our servers Curtis and Kate were outstanding! They both were alot of fun and we felt very welcomed! Get the Old Fashion drink for a great experience. Onion soup, crab cakes, creamed spinach, NY sirloin the best! Dessert was Volcano!!! You will love it!!
Be the first to ReplyReally tough to get a reservation at dinner time but it's worth the wait!
It's been a few years since I've eaten in this restaurant and my wife had never had a Pittsburgh style steak before and I told her we must go here. From the appetizers, to the wedge salad to the steaks this place is as good as it gets. We've eaten at other major steakhouses in this area and others including Chicago and New York and this is the best either of us have ever visited. The service was also excellent. Unfortunately it takes 6 to 8 weeks to get a reservation on a Saturday night at dinner time! But well worth the wait!

We went to Council Oak in Tampa tonight for our anniversary because they have whole Maine lobster on their menu. My husband is from New England and has wanted to find a restaurant in Tampa that could make stuffed lobster for him. I input the information on our online reservation and when we arrived tonight, the waitress checked with the chef and he confirmed they could make it for him. When his lobster was served it was BURNT black on the entire top of the lobster. I mean BURNT. I have pictures. I asked the waitress about it and she was very nice, but said she didn't know how they baked it and didn't offer any suggestions. It looked like it was put in the broiler and someone forgot to take it out on time. My husband didn't send it back because it would take 1/2 hour for them to redo it. My husband did his best to pick around the areas that weren't cremated. The cost of this stuffed lobster? $163.00. My meal was very good, but we both agreed we would not go back there. On top of the meal, the place was extremely loud and the service was just ok.

The food is good, but expensive. If you donโt like steak or seafood, the have a chicken or pork chop. We may come back, but we may not
