Ella Dining Room & Bar Sacramento Reviews from The Last Year
Overpriced and mediocre.
All food was lackluster and $45+. Service mediocre. Very ok overall but wouldnt come back.
Best happy hour in town.
Best Caesar salad, and best oysters in town. Did I mention best happy hour in town? Actually probably the best happy hour in any places I've visited. They have one of the best gin and tonic and as of recently (may 2024), it was only $5. They always offer multiple types of delicious fresh oysters. Service has always been great and the ambiance of the restaurant is upscale. They used to validate parking, but no longer. Valet is offered at $12 and you pay with your food bill.
I came here for a friend's birthday and they reserved us
I came here for a friend's birthday and they reserved us the most beautiful table near the kitchen. This is a Selland's affiliated restaurant - and one of the nicer I have been to. The others are more cafeteria style, but also with a viewable kitchen concept. The atmosphere and service was top notch. As for the food, I would say if you are used to food bursting with flavor, you will not enjoy their dishes much. Some stand out dishes to me were their bread and butter and panna cotta. Although, for the prices of each item, I was expecting much more. I will say that everyone who ordered drinks in our party said those were marvelous! Would I come back here again? To dine, no. For a drink and some dessert? Absolutely! It is a beautiful spot to enjoy and have a nice conversation, and the staff is super friendly.
Mother's Day dinner was delicious yet the service was
Mother's Day dinner was delicious yet the service was unbelievably.Unacceptable. Not only was the restaurant maybe at 75% capacity with plenty of empty tables near us, but the service was slow, un attentive, and highly disappointing for a major holiday. The one night mothers would like a warm meal and, good service, and a little extra attention was completely the opposite. I sat for over 15 minutes with an empty glass of wine and an empty glass of water with no one coming by to refill me. In the end, I had to ask them to pack up my dessert so I could take it home because it took more than 45 minutes to bring out my entrée after my child had already finished her meal, and I got to the car and went to take a bite of my dessert. Only to realize I was given two lousy macaroons when the prefix menu selection I made the lemon panna cotta. Horrific I wasn't even given the dessert that I ordered.
If you're looking for a great happy hour, I'd highly
If you're looking for a great happy hour, I'd highly recommend Ella! After living right next to it, months later I decided to give them a try and every item we got was a hit. They have $5 gin & tonic and $6 glasses of wine. The service was also very fast with kind servers. Also now with the nice weather, definitely sit in their outdoor seating!
The food was not as good as when we first visited.
Very limited choices. Service was mediocre.
Another fabulous evening at Ella.
Sacramento is fortunate to have several fine dining restaurants to choose from and Ella sits at the top. Service is always personable, knowledgeable and attentive, but never invasive. During our most recent visit, Chef Harvey asked us to try a caviar and brioche, small-plate, offering he was developing and not yet on the menu. It was delicious and well balanced. Hopeful it will find its way to the menu soon. The pan roasted salmon was cooked to perfection as were the bay scallops. And give the Hummingbird cake a try for dessert. Cheers.
Ella is my go-to for special occasions and it never
Ella is my go-to for special occasions and it never disappoints. Picture this: stepping into an elegant, contemporary space with a chic patio that just screams sophistication. The ambiance alone sets the stage for what turned out to be a culinary journey to remember. First off, let's talk customer service. It was top-notch! From the moment I walked in, I felt like royalty. The staff was incredibly attentive and helpful, especially when it came to navigating the menu as a gluten-free eater. They were knowledgeable about every dish and made thoughtful recommendations that catered to my dietary needs. Now, onto the food. I started with the oysters on the half shell, and let me tell you, they were shucked to perfection. Paired with a tangy cocktail sauce and jalapeño-lime mignonette, each bite was a burst of fresh, briny goodness that left me craving more. Next up was the coal-roasted beets and baby greens salad. Oh my, talk about a flavor explosion! The combination of sweet beets, creamy crumbled feta, crunchy pistachio dukkha, and zesty green garlic dressing was simply divine. It was like a party in my mouth with every forkful. For the main course, I opted for the pan-roasted king salmon, and it was a true masterpiece. Cooked to perfection, the salmon melted in my mouth, while the roasted Brussels sprouts, poached fingerling potatoes, melted leeks, and mustard cream added layers of flavor and texture that danced on my palate. Now, let's talk cocktails. I ordered the White Linen, and it was the epitome of refreshing. Made with gin, St. Germain, lemon, sparkling water, and cucumber, it was the perfect complement to my meal--light, crisp, and oh-so-refreshing. In terms of cleanliness, Ella gets top marks. The entire restaurant was spotless, from the gleaming floors to the sparkling tableware. Reservations are a must here unless you're coming for happy hour on the outdoor patio, and as for wait times for the latter, they were minimal, which is always a plus in my book. Parking can be tricky since it's downtown, so you may have to walk a bit. I recommend parking near Capitol Park on L Street. Yes, Ella may be a bit on the pricier side, but let me tell you, it's worth every penny for the impeccable service, exquisite food, and elegant ambiance. Ella exceeded my expectations in every way possible. From the attentive staff to the mouthwatering dishes and elegant atmosphere, it's a dining experience that I won't soon forget. I can't wait to return and indulge in another culinary adventure at Ella!
Really classy place.
Came in for a business lunch on a Tuesday and it was packed. Had Annie constraint due to a flight so we were in a rush. Seated after about a 5 minute wait -outside. Was a nice day so was ok Ordered an old fashioned and it was really good. Bourbon selection here is amazing. Have every allocated bottle you'd want. Tried the prawn app as well as the Manila clams. Shrimp was cooked perfectly with a tangy sauce and shaved horseradish over the top. Went right to the nose but was was delicious Clams were really good too. Lot of flavors with sausage and cheese clams. Different for sure. Only knock was clams were full of sand, everyone at the table was crunching loudly Ordered the salmon entree and it was good. Fresh salmon over a pea purée. Very tasty Service was ok, we were in a rush and let them know but still seemed slow. Most people, including myself enjoy a paced dining experience so no fault to them for the pace.

My partner and I came on a Saturday night and sat at the bar. The bartender was extremely knowledgeable, but we loved the creativity the most! The "Make it Snappy" is simply amazing. I could drink that all day long! We are vegetarian and there weren't a ton of items on the menu. We had the cheese plate and drinks which was sufficient.

We were here for a private event and they did not disappoint. Wonderful setting right in Downtown Sacramento! Beautiful interior and decor. Staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable on their food and servings. Chef was on hand and sommelier as well. Most of the food was delicious and delectable aside from one or two. This being a private event understandable that would be different than in person dining but still a very memorable experience I wanted to share
My wife and I had a nice dinner last night at Ella but
My wife and I had a nice dinner last night at Ella but there were problems. For some reason each time I ordered a really expensive glass of their finest red wine it came to my table ice cold - like it came directly out of the refrigerator. No high-end restaurant would ever serve a $60 per glass of wine this way to a customer. Even the dessert wine was bone-chilling cold at the end of the meal. Furthermore, the dinner wine was so cold that I couldn't enjoy it nor could I even taste if it was any good as it was numb paired with my dinner. It was a frustrating experience. I even told the waitress who just blew me off. The food was good but as I said it was misaligned with the paired wine as recommended by the waitress, thus ruining the dining experience. I'm not sure why this is happening. We choose this restaurant when we want a fine dining experience. However, I believe we now are going to look elsewhere because of our experience and having to face that corresponding bill for that experience.
Amazing atmosphere, great service and wonderful food
Amazing atmosphere, great service and wonderful food quality. Pricey but worth the money spent.

Dining at Ella is truly an experience!! The ambiance is perfect for a date night or a special occasion. I love that they always have fresh flowers on the tables and around You start off the night with small bites, or a flavorful appetizer - the steak tar tar is one of my favorites!! It's hard to resist, but make sure not to leave room for the rest of the meal! The oysters were so good we ended up eating about a dozen each, the lobster is also a top pick with great presentation served on a well laid out platter. The waiters and waitresses are always friendly and attentive. I had a great time and can't wait to be back to celebrate another special occasion!
excellent service food was great and drinks are affordable.
Ambient was nice and location is not bad.
Service was not great.
We came for happy hour. It was not made clear that happy hour was only served at the " high top tables " Happy hour is essentially $2 off a drink. There was only 10 minutes left so it would have been 1 drink. The server refused to honor it. Seemed petty and cheap.
Really great service in a wonderful restaurant in the heart
Really great service in a wonderful restaurant in the heart of downtown/midtown Sac. Part of the Selland Family of restaurants, we'd been wanting to try Ella for quite some time! Food selection is fantastic with plenty of creative and thoughtful dishes. Very rich in flavor with delicious combinations of ingredients cooked well. Had the crispy lamb and the risotto - both were excellent and would recommend. The raclette potatoes were fantastic! Wine and drink list is extensive. Their signature gin and tonic is a great choice. Ambiance is warm and energetic with plenty of after-work gatherings and friends catching up. Great place for a romantic meal or celebrating a birthday or special event. A bit on the pricey side, but overall worth if you're able to save up a bit to enjoy this as your evening out.
Customer service sucks.
We were there celebrating my bday. When we made reservations, I wrote on there. But no one even said: happy bday. 2nd of all, the food is over salted, so be prepared to drink lots of water. It's a fancy little place, but it's not worth the money.

One of the best restaurants I've been to! I went for my birthday dinner, we were a party of 6. We all left happy with every single thing that we ordered. I had the Crispy Fried half chicken and Crispy Raclette potatoes. It was so delicious! Everything was cooked to perfection. Even the side of carrots were amazing! Oysters were so fresh too. The staff was attentive and had great customer service. Will definitely recommend.
I've always wanted to eat here so I decided to visit this
I've always wanted to eat here so I decided to visit this restaurant with a friend for happy hour. I made a reservation through Yelp, and upon walking in we were seated right away. When the waitress came to our table with some waters, she asked if we were dining for any special occasion. I quite plainly replied "I've been wanting to try out the happy hour menu!" I'm glad I said this because that is when she explained to us that happy hour dining is only served in the lounge area and it is shared seating at one long table. She walked us over and helped us get situated and we thanked her. Luckily we didn't have to wait too long until another waitress came by to ask us if we were ready to order. We ordered a couple of cocktails and for food we got the crispy chicharrón tacos, the steak tartare, and the Caesar salad. Everything was delicious and the prices were reasonable. Will definitely be visiting again!
The WORST! Do NOT eat here
DINING: COLD, TASTELESS food, ALL of it: Wood-fired Beef Tenderloin, Duck Confit Potato Rosti, Crispy Sunchokes, everything. Our Tenderloin (ordered medium) was VERY rare. The REFIRE took LONGER than the original order to get, and by that time my wife was so hungry, she just ate it. She lost half her Sunchokes when it was taken away for the refire. Had to ask for water: it was served lukewarm. Had to call the server back again to ask for ice. Was glared at when I asked for salt (all the food was absolutely flavorless). ATMOSPHERE: Dirty, unwashed floor; Drapes, floor to ceiling, coverfing unfinished walls (possibly mid-construction?); Irregular, painted shutters over the middle of the ceiling; etc.. We were seated at a "cozy" table (were told this THREE times by the maitre d') - it was squeezed in, next to the cold windows (32 deg outside). Servers changed utensils after every "dish" served ("small plate", soup, entree, etc), but FAILED to check if the food served was fine, or if we wanted more water (we had to ask for more), etc. No real service except for the change of utensils. SUMMARY: Upon leaving, the manager asked us if our experience was good. I told him I always tip, but it was only 10% due to all the above. He acted surprised and said: "Well you should've told me!" He PERSONALLY delivered the under-done, refired tenderloin. For a customer to teach a manager the basics of running a restaurant: hire competant chefs; train your servers; clean and wash your floors; etc. is simply unreal. This was for my wife's birthday, $250.00 wasted when I wanted to treat her to an "upscale" dinner. To say I'm angry about this "dining experience" is an understament. A "4.5 to 4.6 star rating"? DEFINITELY not! If I could give it a zero, I would.
Outstanding
Exceptional food and service. I try to go whenever I am in Sacramento and Ella does not disappoint. Small, elegant attention to service details alone would merit a visit, but the food itself is equally worthwhile. So much is good, but the lobster appetizer and fried chicken are standouts.
Terribly disappointing based on local, longstanding recommendations
We have been wanting to dine in Ella for ages because of the high recommendations from folks in Sacramento. Unfortunately, we were terribly disappointed and I cannot recommend this restaurant. The biggest offending element was the service. Don't get me wrong all the staff were perfectly pleasant, but it deeply lacked the elevation you'd expect at a restaurant of this caliber. We were not greeted on entry, and had to stand in the entrance for longer than was comfortable to be helped. They quickly bussed and sat us at a soaking wet table. No one checked back in on us until we were halfway done eating, which was unfortunate, because we desperately needed some salt. Then when we were done, rather than clearing the table, they left heaps of dirty dishes on the table and brought us the bill. After they scanned the card, they literally lifted a plate with ketchup on it to slide the bill under and we had no table space available to tip and sign the receipt. As we were leaving, we could hear the wait staff talking about how much a table had tipped -- which just felt tasteless. The decor is cheap and not as elegant as I would expect from a restaurant recommended for fine dining. Lightweight chairs that would fit best in a lackluster hotel cafe, shabby shutters lining the walls and ceilings, cluttery aesthetic with glasses and flatware dotted around and exposed messy server stations. The food was not terrible, but also not anything that we would recommend. We had the lobster corndogs, shrimp & lobster roll, and the fried half chicken -- which was unevenly cooked with areas of burnt breading and areas that were too pale. We were ready to love this place and have always heard great things, but it was not an enjoyable experience.
Wonderful dinner for two
We arrived for an early dinner. As the restaurant was not yet in the evening rush we got our server to ourselves for a bit. Brian was the best! The food here is incredible, as one would expect. We had an amazing corn soup that was like the taste of summer in a bowl. The rolls and carrots were also stellar. Our server, however, was the true standout of the evening. He made the experience magical with top notch service and stories of the history of the dishes.
Simply Spectacular
Had an amazing meal at this very special fine dining establishment. It is rare that I will rate anything 5 Stars. However, this restaurant fully deserved robust applause. We were three diners. Every dish we ordered was superb. These included: Brioche Bread, corn chowder, stone salad, fried chicken, homemade pasta with tomatoes, cold lobster, ice cream Sunday. All absolutely a pleasure on the palate. To top it off, the service was extraordinary! I encourage you to treat yourself to this very special experience!
Nice dinning experience in downtown Sacramento CA
Nice dinner and drink menu. Great service. Nice location walkable from the two large hotels Sheraton grand and Hyatt. King salmon was done perfectly. The beef Wellington was very good as well. The pork was a bit over done. Will visit agai to try other dishes.

The site doesn't have resources to properly execute a reservation transfer. Some places allow it however the best bet is to open a chat on the listing from the seller and communicate there

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
