Engawa London Reviews from The Last Year
Friendly authentic Japanese dinner experience.
I have just finished dinner with my girlfriend here. It was a great experience overall. The restaurant is small but has a nice and intimate feel to it. Staff was super friendly and professional, which is very important to me. The waitress (I think her name was Ayuka) who mostly looked after us was excellent. The food was really good too, love the sushi boxes - the presentation is an experience in itself! They use quality ingredients and everything was fresh. There is an open kitchen, so you can actually watch the chefs prepare each dish. We also tried the beef, which I would recommend. The portion is a bit small but it's tasty and top quality. Only thing I would change next time is to book an actual table. I had booked through OpenTable and selected the high-table option (out of only two options, the other one being the bar) but we somehow ended up at the bar. There is nothing wrong with the bar in and of itself (it is actually a great spot if you want to be close to the kitchen) but I would have preferred a table seat. However, I believe this is more of an OpenTable issue. I don't particularly like their booking system, and at better restaurants, it always feels like you don't get the full seating choice through their site. In any case, I would recommend Engawa and will come back at some point in the coming months.
Down, down hill …
Used to be one of our favourite restaurants in London. But not anymore! We went a few months ago and were disappointed and put it down to an off day, but this is the second time. Maybe there were not making enough money and have had to change things up, but the sushi is now over cold, very , very bland; even the hot dishes were luke warm . Gone are the hot stones and cocktails . Really, genuinely, we could have ate as well at Yo Sushi and it wouldn’t have cost us £250 for 2 people! I don’t think my wife and I have ever been to a restaurant once so good that has become so deeply, deeply average. For those who used to love this place, you have been warned…
Amazing restaurant!
One of the best restaurants I have been to in years. The service is impeccable and the food is amazing I would highly recommend Engawa
We did the 5 course omakase, and I did the drink pairing.
One of the best omakase's we have had and a great deal. Each course comes with multiple pieces, so you get way more than the 15ish items I usually expect when having omakase. Waitstaff were fantastic as well, overall great experience.
delightful experience with wonderful food
What a delightful experience with wonderful food in a wonderful atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed sushi and beef and were treated very warm and professional.
Real Japanese Experience
This is a place you will love if you like real Japanese food. I saw some reviews which I suspect are from people are not used to certain Japanese quality standards. The food, the quality, the service, everything is amazing. And the fact the restaurant is so tiny is also big plus! Well done!
After many years, disappointed twice in a row!
I have been coming to this tiny restaurant hidden in Ham Yard ever since it opened and during most of my regular London visits, and I have always loved it and the quality of its dishes and the service team. Yet, the last few times there was always something that wasn't right. When you order the Wagyu beef on the hot stone, you would expect the stone to be really hot, so that you can do the finish to the meat the way you like it. Twice, the stone wasn't hot enough - the first time I just didn't eat the meat and the second time, I gave it back and asked to be served again with a stone that is actually hot. There had always been really good and nice staff that served at the tables but on my most recent visit the head waiters that had been there for a few years (two guys who I always thought were Spanish) were all gone and replaced by new staff and I didn't get the service I was used to at all. This was also the second time when the "hot stone" was served lukewarm. The dishes had generally been great, but things have changed over the course of the last 12 months. For example, the O'Toro Sashimi dish used to be so great with a really good portion of O'Toro fish, but also the way it was prepared like some kind of tower with green veggies. Unfortunately, the last couple of times, the fish became less and the veggies more. Well, I will give this restaurant one more try and if not satisfied, will look for other alternative choices in London.
Really exceptional 👌
Very nice neighborhood, with cosy lights and friendly people. Pleasant welcome at the entrance. We took the 5 course Wagyu menu. Very good. Really exceptional. All the little trays, and each bite was prepared with so much attention and care. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and look at the chefs making all this delicious food 👌for us. The service was very good, paying attention to the customer and refilling our water and wine all the time. What an amazing evening. We can recommend this restaurant! Kind regards, Kim & Stijn Mulder ( Struik).
Came here for a special birthday dinner and it did not
Came here for a special birthday dinner and it did not disappoint. Omakase was delicious with some of the freshest, most flavourful fish I've had in a long time. Small on the inside but looked like there is some outdoor seating sometimes too. If you sit at the counter you can watch the chefs prepare your food. Check it out if you need some good sushi while you're in the area!
