Still love their beef kway teow! I ordered the large
Still love their beef kway teow! I ordered the large portion for $18 which had generous amount of beef slices and think it's a great portion for 2 people! Will be going back to them when I visit Singapore again!
Be the first to ReplyThere was a recent op ed about F&B businesses in Singapore
There was a recent op ed about F&B businesses in Singapore and the effect of COVID on businesses closing, and how all of them might not be worth saving. This was a hard-eyed look at the landscape in Singapore where those who trade in food and drink find themselves. You should take the time to digest this thoughtful editorial, especially if you live, eat, and drink in Singapore in 2020...google "Hard Truths To Keep Singapore's F&B Going: Are All Our Restaurants Worth Saving?" This is most definitely a joint worth saving and one that is likely to survive on the strength of its traditional following and business model. Thankfully, Lor 9 Beef Kway Teow King has always thrived on to-go custom. Never having been a sit down joint, it's going to do just fine in the new normal. If you still need a menu guide then I suggest you head down for some take out. There's really only one thing on the menu as it so often is in Singapore's highly evolved culinary ecosystem...one dish experts that have been doing the same thing since anyone can remember. Ok, so it's the beef hor fun of which this joint rightfully claims to be the king of. Other 'Kings' have been crowned for less, so some hyperbole is to be embraced. The beef hor fun has an abundance of wok hey, with a textured smokiness that flows seamlessly into peppery spicy heat, riding on a cloud of fat and umami that is the gravy. The slivers of beef are tender and the black bean sauce gives the sauce coherence and enough gravity to pull the whole dish together. Divine in my book, and definitely worth supporting and saving if anything is worth having in the brave new normal.
Be the first to ReplyPretty good food if you like 'dai chao'.
Their food are tasty and have 'wok hei' .. the only downside is, quite oily for each dish. Don't have to wait for long, their service is fast.
Be the first to ReplyI always get the beef hor fun whenever I am in Singapore
I always get the beef hor fun whenever I am in Singapore getting frog porridge since it's just across the street and you could sit across the street and they would bring the hor fun order over. Best coupled with frog porridge and oyster egg from across the street!

Once or if we're lucky, twice every year we get to fly to the Food Paradise that is Singapore. This is one of our "go to" food centres when we're in Singapore. Usually the tell-tale sign of a good dish or chef is the lines out the front but I think some people just enjoy lining up for food at times in Singapore without their being any substance behind the food for my tastes and although we've never had to wait to be seated here, the food's always been good.Another gauge is that there's photos of celebrities, certificate of awards and merit and newspaper clippings adorning the stalls sign or posted at every convenience but it seems to be becoming more and more popular amongst stalls and not always a denominator of quality.Beef Hor Fun or Beef Kway Teow is a wok fried beef dish with flat rice noodles which are all cooked at an extremely high heat. The skill of the chef is always evident in how they can infuse the "Wok Hei" aka wok's breath or flavour of the wok into their fare and balance that with all the other flavours going on in a very complex flavoured dish. The flavours balanced extremely well and the Wok Hei was far more prominent than most hawkers and the chef has it down to a fine art as it was beautifully crafted on every occasion that we've been here.Overall I think it was an excellent example of Beef Hor Fun and by far the best in our travels. We also had the clams, the sweet and sour pork, the fried baby squid or Sotong Goreng, ginger frog legs and you can also get vendors from across the road to serve you up meals too and had Oluak aka Oyster Omelette from across the road too.Cheers!Dave.
Be the first to ReplyI love hor fun (flat rice noodles) and I believe I have
I love hor fun (flat rice noodles) and I believe I have found my favorite place in Singapore. Most other places just seems like the noodles were blanched in water, drained and brown gravy poured over it. Some might prefer it that way, but I prefer the noodles tossed in a super hot wok so it can absorb all that "wok essence" which I can definitely taste in the noodles here. Tried both the wet and dry versions of beef hor fun and both equally delicious. I saw a TV food program and this place was presented on an episode about hor fun. I mentioned it to the waitress and she quickly started waving her hands (assuming I meant I saw her) and said, 'oh no, that wasn't me, that was the owner' ... so humble. Also tried their coffee pork ribs and sambal kang kong - all very tasty. Will visit again for sure.
Be the first to ReplyPretty nice although I wasn't blown away.
Beef slices were tender. Would return if I was in the area and in the mood for beef hor fun, but I wouldn't make a trip just for this
Be the first to ReplyAmazing.
If there's a dish that I will miss dearly whenever I leave Singapore, this will be the one. We do have beef hor fun back in Penang or in KL, but this one is a class above the rest that i'll give it to Singapore. I came here a couple of times before and business has been consistently good. Food wise - good as well. Do come early or slightly late after dinner if you want a table fast. Or else, you have to queue for it. Some of the highlight include the famous beef kuey teow (filled with wok hei and amazingly tender beef), "heh coh" aka fried prawn patties (?), stir fried tou miao, salt and pepper fried chicken wings and seafood mee goreng. I would recommend to come in a group so you can order a few dishes and share among yourself. One caution though, the fish dishes here tend to get a little too expensive. During my first trip here, we ordered a whole pomfret cooked 2 ways (sweet and sour one side, and another deep fried fillet) and it cost us SGD$65. So do not fall into that trap unless you really crave for fish and dont mind paying that ridiculous price. It can be a love-hate relationship with the service here. While the waitresses (mostly from China and a few locals) can be rude to some, to me, they're just being very efficient and want to get things done because things can get chaotic during peak hours at the restaurant with people coming in non stop and asking them 1001 questions. What I usually do is upon seated, ill ask for a menu and ill tell the ladies to come back later after 10 mins or 15 mins. Quickly look through the menu and make up my mind and order. The waitress will tell you "due to lack of manpower please order your drinks at the counter". Trust me, they always take this as a reason! One tip: if you fancy a plate of oyster omelette, you can actually walk across to the other side of Lor 9 and order from another shop located just adjacent from the beef hor fun place. Oyster omelette was meh. Nothing special and too oily. In total we paid $65 (large beef hor fun, vege, mee goreng, chicken wings and fried prawn patties) - very reasonable. Another $10 for the oyster omelette from the shop across the road.

This is a review of lunch with a colleague at Geylang Lorong 9 Beef Kway Teow.We had tried to go here once before. However, when we arrived, we learned they were closed on Mondays. tinyurl.com/bx2yy5nThis time, we were able to deliver on our goal.Obviously, from their name, Geylang Lorong 9 Beef Kway Teow is famous for their beef kway teow. The ambiance is what it is. Actually, it quite reminded me of what, in US Chinese restaurants, is called Mongolian beef, but served with noodles. There was a layering of sweet and spicy flavours. The noodles and the beef were both very tender. This is a kind of dish I could eat everyday. tinyurl.com/ablfxukPrawn Balls - We also ordered some of their prawn balls. Be the first to ReplyI was really excited to meet some local friends for dinner
I was really excited to meet some local friends for dinner here, as one of the recommendations on my to-eat list was kway teow. Then one of the guys referred to it as hor fun, and I was like, uh... isn't that just flat rice noodles?A little bit deflated, I went to meet the others for dinner, wondering what could be so special about flat rice noodles. They were quite yummy though, served in a thick, gooey sauce, and nice and chewy for both the beef and noodles. For my beverage, I also got a refreshing lime jelly that was more like a dessert, but still delicious to suck through a straw.Ambiance is rather basic, with simple seating outside and plastic bowls and chopsticks. The 8 of us ate family-style, from large plates in the middle, and there was something quite communal about serving each other and sharing the food that I sometimes miss in Western culture. What's interesting is that during the meal, one of the guys popped over next door to order some frog leg porridge for our table. I found it funny that neither restaurant seemed to mind that we were sitting on one side while ordering food from the other.
Be the first to ReplySuper quick service.
They have much more than just beef kway teow. The signature beef kway teow is not the best ever as it doesn't have much of a wok hei taste. But I love that the beef slices are amazingly render and the little red cut chillies add an extra kick. Plus, you can order the awesome frog leg porridge from across the street to eat at the same table.Perfect supper spot as they are opened till the wee hours.
