Disappointing
After a promising start where we had pre-dinner drinks in the garden, we were shown through to the restaurant for Jazz Sunday lunch. We were given a small pokey table in the corner right by the kitchen, also right in front of the band.. literally had to shout at each other all through the meal to have any conversation. Had to send both our meals back as they were cold. What came out was only slight hotter, the roast potatoes looked and tasted as though they had been in a deep fat fryer. Really bland underwhelming food. Seemed totally unrefined. How do you get Sunday lunch so wrong..? Finished with a drink outside..ยฃ20 for a glass of house Rose a bit steep when a bottle of Whispering Angel we had with lunch was only ยฃ65. As for the Jazz, a bit of a stretch to call it that, seemed more blues brothers. Not the refined lunch we were expecting in any shape or form, left ยฃ229 worse off for couple of hours which had no finesse about it at all. The gardens however were stunning.

We went as it was our anniversary and we wanted something good but not over the top. We did not tell them as we just felt it should be a normal meal. The food was great, nice flavours, good appearance and just right. We also had wine by the glass which also was of good quality. Service was good. A worthwhile visit to be repeated.

It is always a treat to come here, the location is sublime, the architecture is charming, the gardens are wonderful. I had booked ahead for a friends birthday. I prearranged drinks in the bar, so turn up half an hour early to enjoy a tipple in the beautiful lounge. The restaurant itself is modest but tasteful. We had a lovely table in the window. The menu was not complicated or overloaded with choices. 4 starters, 4 mains. A vegan choice, fish choice and two meat choices. I opted for the dressed crab served with the most delicious sour dough bread and whipped butter. We made a bit of a mess ( crumbs everywhere ), but don't change it. The main course was duck breast with stuffed leg plus peaches. Very filling and tasty. Staff were very professional and friendly. Can't recommend it more highly, but the bill was high. But you get what you pay for which is a wonderful experience.

As part of our stay at Whatley Manor we dined both in the formal dining room and the more informal Grey's Brasserie The food and the service in Greys both for Breakfast and Evening Meal was excellent. Well worth a visit and keep up the great work.

Wife and I went for Sunday lunch. The atmosphere and greeting were welcoming. The temperature perfect (on a very warm day). We knew it would not be cheap, but we paid through the nose for average food. My wife had lamb roast, which was eventually pretty good. We'd asked for 'well done', but it arrived pink, so we sent it back. No problem and it came back fine - but it's always a shame when people's meals are out of sync. My wife also returned her gravy, which was too salty for her to eat. Again replaced without question. I had Atlantic Cod, which I thought would come with similar veggies to the roasts. But no, it was explained it's a 'full meal on it's own'. It was ยฃ29.50 for a cereal bowl sized dish containing a fairly small slice of cod on a bed of samphire, all floating in what I think was salty melted butter. This would have been very small for a child's meal. When I mentioned this to the server, she offered me extra sides to complete my meal - which I accepted, but paid extra. I'm not inclined to return here, as there are so many excellent alternative venues nearby.

The staff serving were charming and pleasant as was the Sommelier. We can only think that they must have been embarrassed to carry the bowls to our table. I say bowls because 3 of us had sea bream on top of some indistinguishable vegetable, that would have looked better in a plate and we would have been able to use our knives and forks which proved impossible with a bowl. The fish itself was totally over cooked and dry. The fourth person had ravioli that would have had Italians in fits of laughter and would have justified their criticism of English cooking. The starter Gravlax with beetroot was not only pathetic in size but utterly tasteless. We can only assume that all your chefs and cooks were absent on this particular night. We knew it was going to be expensive we certainly werenโt disappointed at that. I can highly recommend any of the surrounding pubs that will provide far better food.

Be the first to ReplyLunch with Gyles Brandreth
After a number of postponements due to C-19, we finally made the Lunch with Gyles Brandreth. The communication from Holly was first class and any emails were answered promptly.
We arrived at this attractive hotel in glorious October sunshine and we were welcomed by the staff. We joined the 50+ other guests in the sitting room and had a glass of champagne and canapรฉs that were delicious.
Gyles arrived without fanfare and wandered around the room, joining tables to chat amiably with one and all.
Lunch was then served - smoked salmon, chicken with โscorchedโ cabbage and potatoes, followed by a delicious dessert. Wine, both white and red was free flowing. Tea and coffee was also available.
The service was friendly but professional at all times.
The talk given by Mr Brandreth was very funny, interesting and a perfect length of time ( considering his record for after dinner speaking is 12 hours!)
He then signed copies of his new book, itโs a great read too.
Afterwards, we walked in the lovely gardens and sat and enjoyed the continued sunshine for an hour or so.
Making my birthday special
With a BIG "Oh No" birthday on the horizon, I wanted to do something special and not so main stream for my closest friends
Grey's Brasserie Sunday Jazz Lunch at Whatley Manor looked like a perfect and believe me neither me or my 24 guests were disappointed
The venue is spectacular - the gardens magnificent
Stevie and Stevie the jazz duo that form 'Gilmore n'Jaz' are brilliant, two cheeky lovely chappies you could ever meet. In order to play a treasured song Kenny G's Songbird, the most talented saxophonist Amy brought it too life for me
The food - words escape me but I will try - DELICIOUS! Beautifully presented, ample portions : all the food intolerances I had informed in advance were catered for without any worries
BUT ABOVE ALL : the team at Whatley Manor made this the exceptional day it became. They could not have been more attentive to me or my guests. Nothing was too much trouble from the moment we arrived for cocktails in the wood panelled Great Hall to when the jazz finished
After 18 months of lockdown and having several close friends not able to travel from France, Belgium and the USA due to COV-ID restrictions, keeping these most amazing team members must have been an enormous struggle
THANK YOU Whatley Manor that you did - they made my day one I will never forget
Very fine lunch, and good jazz
We went for a much belated lunch for my sister-in-law. And it was a Jazz lunch with a really good twosome. Comfy table. What a place, a lovely cluster of buildings oozing heritage in every corner, and spectacular gardens. I had a scotch egg as a starter and could not fault it. Others had a crab & langoustine mix in a marie rose sauce which they all enjoyed. Three of us went for either roast beef or belly pork, and it was good, with exceptionally generous portions My SiL had a ravioli dish which was not huge, but she said was very good. A walk in the gardens is very worthwhile. Very nice coffee as well, and service was exceptionally good. With wines, ยฃ280 for four, so not cheap, but worth it.
Be the first to ReplyA French lesson in the Brasserie.
If there is one thing that makes a Brasserie, it's a real live French waiter. And lo and behold, waiting on our table was a smart young man from across La Manche. His name, (Excusez-moi monsieur, j'ai oublie votre nom). But no matter, because we had a very enjoyable time in Grey's Brasserie. Now when staying at a good hotel, I really like having a second resteraunt or choice to give a certain variety when dinning. This is what we found on our break to Whatley Manor. We ate twice in the main restaurant, (VERY, VERY, VERY NICE INDEED) and once in the Brasserie. We found the Brasserie very relaxed but still professional and top draw. I had the very best Pork Belly I have ever consumed and my wife delighted in her bright red middled steak. I think I overdid my French practice with the very patient waiter, but I had an enjoyable evening in anticipation of the more slightly formal dinning over the following two evenings.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and surroundings
Dinner at the brasserie was just like the dining room a wonderful experience. The food perfectly cooked and presented. Our only negative comment would be the portion sizes are a little small and without the bread we would have left still hungry. However, we will return to both restaurants as the quality of cooking and produce is exceptional.
Be the first to ReplySunday Lunch at Whatley Manor
Booked a table for 2 for Sunday lunch and really, really, enjoyed every minute of the experience. We arrived at 12:30 and started with a glass of fizz, followed by a wonderful 3 course lunch with a half litre of good red wine and left the table at a little after 3:00 PM. The food was just wonderful, staff most attentive, and the restaurant well socially distanced. We will be back again soon!
Be the first to ReplyLittle disappointing
Both the service and food were good however the menu was limited. Starter portions were extremely small but tasty.
Gardens are wonderful.
