Not worthy of Michelin status. Taster menu a disaster

2/5 by 👻 @michwil22 on 09/12/2025

We booked a table at gymkhana to celebrate our wedding anniversary and had been looking forward to it for months. However we were left very disappointed. We each ordered off the taster menu. I opted for the veggie option and my husband the normal one. It started out well with a nice selection of poppadoms and dipping sauces. Very nice, although rather spicy. The dishes following that were disappointing. Lacked the flavours and presentation you expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. But the biggest issue was the portion sizes. They were huge. A la carte portion sizes in a taster menu 🙈 you don't expect to go to a fine dining 2* Michelin restaurant, pay £400 and end up taking half of it home in takeaway boxes. The service throughout was very good though. A warm welcome and good explanation of the dishes. They even gave me some yoghurt as I found the dishes so spicy. Baffles how me how they are Michelin starred. We have been to much better than this. Very disappointed.

Christmas Gift

5/5 by 👻 @John H on 09/11/2025

This food is just exceptional. The blend of spice is exquisite. There really is too many positives to start listing them. If you like Indian cuisine then this is the place to go. The service is exceptional and the staff are wonderful. My son and partner took us here as a gift for Christmas and it was just superb. One has to book well in advance but the wait is well worth it.

Underwhelming and memorable for the wrong reasons

2/5 by 👻 @Susanna S on 09/10/2025

We were expecting a real wow experience but sadly it was very disappointing. It was quite dark which made it difficult to read menus and see food well. The lamb chop which was supposed to be amazing was soo disappointing. It was over cooked and dry with little charring on the outside. We have had equally good take away curries at a fraction of the price. We have been to many Michelin star restaurants and this has got to be a very low ranking one. It is not somewhere we would return to or recommend to friends. Very underwhelming!!

Poor Service, Allergens and Integrity.

1/5 by 👻 @Paul S on 09/06/2025

I booked the private dinning room (42 Albemarle) for my wife's birthday and a family celebration (15 people) on 28 August. I agreed a menu and time table for service, spelt out allergies (cashews and pistachios - my daughter carries an epi pen) etc. The schedule was agreed and they stated no dishes with allergens would be served at the dinner. Service was dreadful and they served dishes with allergens having said no dishes with allergens would be served. Fortunately my daughter who has the allergies saved a real tragedy as, although we had been given the assurance, she double checked when the dishes were served whether they had cashews and/or pistachios and was informed at the table they did. Absent her diligence the epi pen would have been used that evening. While the evening was not a complete disaster poor service detracted enormously from the event. The price was £600 a head (paid in advance) so you need to be good to justify that and it was really poor on any measure. I raised the issues with Gymkhana immediately after the event and they acknowledged their multiple failings and stated they had issues with the waiters/ kitchen staff that evening and were very apologetic. Their acknowledgement was a good start. However it went downhill from there. They offered to refund the service charge (which had been added as a mandatory expense to the bill which had been paid in advance) . I said that was an inadequate response to the issues. They immediately acknowledged that the offer to refund the service charge was inadequate (why make an offer you know and immediately acknowledge is inadequate?). They then offered some vouchers to dine at their restaurants. This I rejected to as inappropriate/inadequate. On the allergies they tried to back track and stated they would only remove dishes from the table if someone had air borne allergies. In the dialogue leading up to the booking when I flagged my daughter's allergies they stated "we can remove any dish containing pistachios and cashews from the menu". I confirmed that should be done and thus no dishes with allergies should have been served - period. It is disappointing Gymkhana tried to backtrack on this point. Given it is a fundamental safety issue the right thing is to acknowledge the error, figure out how it happened and make sure it does not happen again. There were other issues regarding the costs incurred that called into question the integrity of the staff. Anyway the matter has been escalated and Gymkhana has stated they are looking into it further. The allergy point is really the most serious as it is a safety issue with potentially lethal consequences rather than bad service which is annoying and spoils an evening but you will not die from that.

The undisputed best Indian in the city. Great staff, delicious meal.

5/5 by 👻 @joecohn79 on 09/02/2025

Third visit in 16 months. It’s that good. The rating system is not fit for purpose where this restaurant is concerned. It gets a legit 6 every time! Staff were central to the whole experience, the breathtaking interior provides the perfect environment, the bar is amazing. I tried the Old Fashioned and Spicy Margarita, had to be advised it wasn’t available intravenously. What fabulous classics with a twist. It has been recognised as the best chicken butter and lamb chops in the world and if you’ve already visited, that is preaching to the converted. If you haven’t, just try it, it will on your MUST DO list forever. Can’t wait to return if we can snatch another reservation.

High quality Indian food

5/5 by 👻 @Simon K. Nutt on 08/31/2025

As 1 of the very few Indian restaurants in the world to hold 2 Michelin stars, we were really excited yo come here. The food was great, especially the oak chops, although they were slightly too salty. The muntjac biriyani was a little disappointing. The curries were all nice and the desserts were great. Prices are high as you would expect but it is worth a try!

Still the best curry in London

5/5 by 👻 @Kristen P on 08/30/2025

If you want to make someone jealous, then say these three words: “I’m visiting Gymkhana”. Whenever I told people I had a reservation at the restaurant, I got exactly the same response: “Take me”. In London, Gymkhana is situated in the sophisticated Mayfair, easily one of the capital's most desirable neighbourhoods. The unassuming entrance includes a dark green façade. When we arrived, we were greeted by smiling staff and the smell of curry. The concept is inspired by the colonial era’s gymkhana clubs, where an elite crowd would eat, drink and play sports. Gymkhana’s decor makes you feel like you are stepping into a bygone era. The blinds hide the new world outdoors, so you can admire the old world indoors. The venue is adorned with black and white photos of cricket clubs, deer heads, fringed lamps and wooden ceiling fans. The attention to detail even extended to the playlist, which included a sitar version of The Beatles’ And I Love Her. We opted for the Tasting Menu, which showcased Gymkhana’s greatest hits. The friendly staff showed us how to eat the dishes, as some were creative takes on classics. And between each course, the restaurant filled with a diverse crowd, from birthdays to business groups. We started with the Aloo Chat, which had a crispy texture and sweet yet spicy flavour. The Chicken Butter Masala drew inspiration from the chef’s background, and it tasted like a British Chicken Tikka Masala. The mains were return-worthy good. We ordered a biriyani – cooked in a pastry case, the lid was lifted and revealed a richer taste. The Wild Muntjac Biriyani was oh-so smoky. The Kid Goat Methi Keema is an unexpected delight. The dish combined splendour and simplicity, as we were given a soft, slow-cooked meat and buttery brioche bun. The wine list takes advantage of the walk-in cellar, and staff are comfortable suggesting pairings by the glass, with no hard sell toward higher-priced bottles. Service is polished and attentive throughout, confident without being overbearing. Staff move seamlessly between courses and take time to explain the stories behind each dish. It's luxurious but grounded. With superb service and a focus on quality, it's easy to see why Gymkhana is likely to remain the talk of the town. The discreet, dark entrance is easy to miss, but that’s the point. Don’t be surprised if you find paparazzi swarming outside, as the foodie fans include many famous faces. It’s a testament to the brand that it has lasted this long, earned its second Michelin star last year and produced an offspring of critically-acclaimed chefs and restaurants.

You’ll think you know Indian food, and then you’ll try Gymkhana

5/5 by 👻 @George on 08/29/2025

Gymkhana, a sleek Indian spot in Mayfair, is the kind of place that will surprise you with every single dish. In London, it’s an institution. There’s no way you’ll be able to pick a favourite until you’ve tried absolutely everything here. This is a clever little restaurant, with a very clever menu. Indian classics done well, like buttery, tender chicken curry and prawns masala packed with heat. Order with confidence, whether from the biryani section or the tasting menu with pani puri shots and some of London’s best dal makhani and aloo chat. I rarely eat dessert in Indian restaurants, because I’m never disciplined enough to leave room for a final hurrah, but at Gymkhana the tiramisu and mango kheer pudding (paired with a glass of chai or an espresso martini) is the perfect way to end a sumptuous meal with a bang. It’s a vast menu that’s worth exploring. Coming with a small group is best so you can work your way through all the dishes and fully enjoy their sharing concept. The outstanding food, effortlessly good and friendly service, and intimate feel of the place all make it a restaurant we want to bring someone special—be that a date, a friend, or a friend who we’re trying to flatter in hopes they’ll one day say yes to a date. It doesn’t really matter who, because this is somewhere that’ll impress everyone. Make sure you start the night with cocktails at their 42 bar upstairs, and browse their gin menu. Originally inspired by colonial India’s Days of the Raj polo clubs, this thoroughbred from the JKS group (Trishna, Lyle’s, Ambassador’s Club, Sabor, Brigadiers, Bibi etc) is a classy Mayfair package spread over two levels connected by a mirrored staircase. Most of the action takes place in the ground-floor dining room and bar upstairs, with its richly upholstered leather seating, whirring ceiling fans, old prints and stag’s heads – not forgetting hunting trophies from the Maharaja of Jodhpur. Gymkhana is an incredibly glamorous restaurant that’s perfect for doing incredibly glamorous things. It’s a moody, sophisticated space complete with intimate booths, exceptional service, and a wild muntjac biryani that is the single best use of pastry since the hallowed invention of the cheese straw. A meal at this Mayfair spot won’t come cheap but it’s worth it for classics that will stay with you long after your final bite of the tandoori masala lamb chops. It gets very busy in the evening, so book well ahead.

By far the absolute best Indian restaurant in London trumping the over hyped others. Fantastic menu, friendly staff and pristine flavours coupled with great, attentive service. This has not changed in years. From the moment we walked in, Gymkhana delivered an outstanding dining experience. The ambiance strikes the perfect balance between elegant and welcoming, making it ideal for both special occasions and relaxed evenings out. Waiters were attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the food and service – a true credit to the restaurant. Each dish we ordered was beautifully presented and packed with flavour, showcasing the best of fine Indian cuisine with a modern twist. Whether you’re there for a quiet dinner or a celebratory night out, this unpretentious restaurant impresses on every level – from the exquisite food to the warm hospitality and refined atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Had the tasting lunch menu with my husband and really enjoyed it. Amazing value. We’re big fans of JKS (especially Brigadiers, Bibi, and Trishna). Gymkhana is our favourite restaurant in London. We visit for all our major celebrations because we know we’ll have a great experience. Super fun, non-stuffy restaurant serving outstanding Indian food. Love the staff here, they create the warmest environment and I look forward to my return. Simply brilliant. Do not hesitate to book here.

5/5 by 👻 @Chandni N. on 08/12/2025

We went to Gymkhana in Mayfair for their lunch special, and it was hands-down one of the best dining experiences I've had in London. The set menu was such a great value for the quality -- every course was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. From the perfectly spiced starters to the rich, aromatic mains, each dish felt like a refined twist on Indian classics. The tandoori lamb chops were cooked to perfection, and the accompanying chutneys added the perfect burst of brightness. We let the restaurant know it was my birthday and they made it a point to bring out some sweets and gave me a post card as well as I am from America! This is actually the second time we went there .. the first time I had gotten a cocktail that I ended up not liking much and hadn't touched the drink. The host came over and asked me if something was wrong with the drink and I let him know, not exactly I just didn't like the taste. He was so generous and removed it form the final bill. Really appreciate the service here. The space itself is gorgeous -- all dark wood, leather banquettes, and colonial club charm -- and the service was warm and attentive without ever feeling rushed. For a Michelin-starred spot, the lunch special made it feel surprisingly accessible, and I left already planning my next visit. Highly recommend for anyone who wants a taste of Gymkhana without committing to the full dinner menu.

5/5 by 👻 @Jennifer C. on 08/08/2025

One of my top favorite meals of all time, not just in London! My bf was able to snag a reservation and we were so excited to eat here. The interior of the restaurant is really unique and intimate, and the servers were all so nice. We didn't do the set menu, and ordered a la cart. Chicken Butter Masala - the creamiest, most flavorful masala ever. It also comes with 3 types of naan, my favorite is the first one. Chicken Tikka - really tender chicken. Like quite possibly the tenderest I've ever had. Patiala Fried Chicken - our server warned us it is spicy, I thought it was just ok but the heat does build. It's so good tho! I think about this from time to time. My bf cannot handle spice and did think this was too spicy, but also thought it was good. Our Server was so nice he brought out some yogurt sauce for him to kill the spice. Aloo Chaat - I forgot what thjs was, but remember it's really creamy and yummy. A recommendation from our server. Pearl of India drink - passion fruit with sparkling jasmine tea. super refreshing. They're opening another location in New York (and Vegas?) sometime this year or next. I hope they open one in OC/LA. I can't wait to dine here again!

My husband and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary at Gymkhana last Friday. While the service was pleasant and the food initially seemed promising, the experience quickly turned into a nightmare. Early the next morning, my husband--who had the chicken--began vomiting uncontrollably for over half an hour. I was unaffected, being vegetarian, but it was clear that the chicken was the culprit. Days later, he is still not fully recovered. We spent over £300 here... We raised a formal complaint and were told the General Manager would be in touch. It's now been several days, and we've heard nothing. Frankly, I expected far better from an establishment of this calibre. The lack of follow-up and accountability is deeply disappointing. We are not happy, and we are still waiting for a proper response UPDATE 7th August - no one has gotten back to us!? Why?

Gymkhana, London - A Disheartening Experience Behind the

3/5 by 👻 @Raju Z. on 08/04/2025

Gymkhana, London - A Disheartening Experience Behind the Hype We are a family of four, of Indian origin and currently based in the USA. During extensive research for our London and Paris trip, Gymkhana stood out for being a Michelin two-star restaurant that offers halal options--something rare and exciting. Unfortunately, what we hoped would be one of the culinary highlights of our trip turned into a frustrating and underwhelming experience that fell far short of expectations on almost every front. Booking Experience The booking process was surprisingly opaque and poorly designed for a restaurant of this caliber. While the site offers options like lunch, minimum spend dinner, and private rooms, these aren't clearly differentiated on the booking calendar. Instead, you're left to interpret the nuances by digging through the website. Worse, the alert system is unintuitive and inefficient. It notifies you of availability without specifying whether it's in the category you're looking for--such as Vault openings when you're looking for main dining room slots. You also need to manually set alerts for each day instead of being able to copy or automate them. This level of functionality is shockingly subpar for a restaurant of this reputation and popularity. Eventually, we secured a 10:15 PM booking for the minimum spend dinner. We were initially concerned about how close this was to closing time (listed as 10:30 PM) and reached out to inquire. The restaurant reassured us that we would receive the full 2.5-hour service experience like any other reservation. The Reality From the moment we arrived, the service was rushed and restrictive. We were informed that lamb chops were no longer available, the set menu was cut off after 9:45 PM, and by 11:00 PM, we were told we had to place any remaining orders (except desserts) immediately. These are very clearly time-based restrictions, in direct contradiction to what we were told when we booked. To make matters worse, at around 11:30 PM, our waiter picked up his bag and left--without so much as notifying us or introducing a replacement. We were left flagging down other staff just to place our dessert order. For a Michelin two-star establishment, this kind of disjointed, inattentive service is unacceptable. Food Review We began with the gol gappa, which came with a scripted monologue from the waiter on its origins and how to eat it--something that might be appreciated by someone unfamiliar with Indian food, but felt patronizing to us. A simple "Would you like an explanation?" would have been more respectful. Unfortunately, the dish itself was worse: stale puris, poorly mixed masala, and bland pani. This wouldn't have cracked the top 100 gol gappas of my life. Next came the Rajasthani bhindi. While styled like a pakoda, it was inconsistently prepared--some pieces were just hollow batter shells with no okra inside. This is the kind of oversight you'd expect from a careless street food stall, not a refined kitchen. The seekh kabab, shrimp, and naan basket were decent. The chicken tikka masala had a nice North Indian flavor and was likely the second-best dish of the evening. Special mention goes to the waiter who clarified which items were halal and requested the chef to prepare a chicken biryani, which turned out to be the standout dish of the night. The rice was beautifully layered and slow-cooked, allowing the spices to blend harmoniously. Similarly, the kulfi falooda hit the right notes--sweetness balanced with vermicelli as it should be. Final Thoughts For a restaurant with such acclaim and pricing, the experience was underwhelming and frustrating. While the meat across dishes was well-cooked, nearly every dish was overly salted. For a two-star Michelin restaurant, balance and precision are expected--and that was simply missing. We came expecting to be dazzled. Instead, we left disappointed--both with the food and with service that was neither warm nor refined. Gymkhana may carry stars on its name, but on this visit, it fell well short of delivering a star-worthy experience.

This was my first time dining at a Michelin star restaurant

5/5 by 👻 @Madison L. on 07/03/2025

This was my first time dining at a Michelin star restaurant and it was one of the best meals of my life. I can see why they have 2 Michelin stars. The interior is intimate and beautiful. Everything is a nod to British Imperialism in India from the decor to the menu. The staff were absolutely incredible. Instead of a dedicated server, everyone served us as they saw a need. They gave us fresh plates, swept up crumbs, and refilled water constantly. It was truly exceptional. To drink, I got the Pegu Club, which featured gin, lime, grapefruit, Campari, and Sabo hops. It was sweet, tart, and perfectly balanced. We did the lunch menu. We started off with the pappadam selection which was served with a variety of chutneys. Each was excellent. I especially loved the mint and prawn chutneys. They also brought out a chick pea potato dish to share that was delicious. Next, I had the Kasoori chicken tikka, which was incredibly herbaceous and so tender. It was served with a delightful sweet yogurt that paired perfectly. Next, I enjoyed the Goan prawn curry, which had huge tender prawns and a thick coconut curry sauce. I enjoyed it with an assortment of other dishes ordered by people at my table and everything was lovely. At the end of the meal. They brought out these pretty sweets. They were delicate, nutty, and had fennel, anise, and other spices. I was truly amazed by the entire experience and would love to come back some day.

We ordered the Lamb Shank Roganjosh and Chicken Butter masala from the A La Carte menu. Both dishes were excellent and full of flavor, especially the butter chicken. The bread basket had some really good options that were fresh and perfectly complimented our entrees. They even brought us a complimentary dessert as we were celebrating a birthday. Superb North Indian cuisine and faultless service

5/5 by 👻 @nwmindra on 07/16/2024

This was our first visit to Gymkhana, which received a second Michelin star earlier this year, the only Indian restaurant with two stars. That also meant that this was our first visit to a two-star Michelin restaurant. We were shown to our snug table downstairs. The decor is discreet as is the lighting and although the seating for the five of us around the table was fairly snug, it was nevertheless entirely comfortable. We ordered a number of dishes and appreciated our waiter's suggestion that what we had ordered was entirely sufficient, rather than suggesting that we over-order as has often been the experience at other restaurants. We had two vegetarians in our group so we had to order a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The kid goat methi keema was absolutely superb, with such finely chopped meat that it probably tasted even better without the accompanying pao. We also ordered the kasoori chicken tikka and the waiter suggested ordering an extra piece to match the number of people. One member of our party felt that the chicken was a little on the tough side. Among the mains, the quail seekh kebab was superb, beautifully flavoured and generously plump (two in a portion). The mushroom biryani was excellent - we really didn't miss the meat. It was also delicately flavoured and didn't induce a feeling of heaviness that you sometimes get with biryanis. To me it was the bread basket that was one of the standouts - every constituent of this collection of Indian breads was fluffy and ebullient - it was the most magnificent bread basket I've ever seen and it felt a travesty to devour it. Honestly I could have eaten nothing but the naan and the butter chicken sauce. The dal lasooni and khatta meetha baingan were also excellent and the gulab jamun was absolutely spot on - exactly as it should be - not the sickly sweet that you sometimes come across - and the presentation was superb. The masala tea was memorable too. You wonder what makes a restaurant, like Gymkhana, earn a Michelin star (or in its case two) whereas other restaurants cannot. The quality of the food goes without saying and the ambience of the restaurant is of course convivial. The presentation of the dishes and their timing is crucial too but I think the standout was how impeccable the service was - not stuffy/stiff at all and yet not obtrusive. The service could not have been better in any way - and that's testament to the quality of the staff that they employ and the training. Two last points, for a two-star Michelin restaurant, this is a bargain. I was very surprised how inexpensive it was. Of course if you want to impress someone, that option is very much available via, say, the tasting menu. But we were completely happy with the a la carte menu. I would add that the petits four were magnificent too. On a more sour note, do they really have to charge for tap water? I only saw this in the bill but if they'd said it was chargeable perhaps I would have opted for bottled water.

Service and penny pinching

3/5 by 👻 @Rainhillman on 07/14/2024

We booked the cocktail lounge “42” from 1700-1830 and the main restaurant from 18:00 onwards. We arrived bang on time. The ambience of the cocktail lounge was amazing, as were the Indian influenced cocktails. However we were initially being pressured to leave and go to our table 30 mins early, and encouraged to take our cocktails with us rather than remain in the lovely surroundings. This was even though we spent just short of £200 on cocktails (2 each for 4 of us). It left us feeling short changed so we insisted that we wanted to finish our cocktails where we were. What made this worse was as that the waitress in the cocktail lounge made a charging mistake when charging to our credit card. They under charged by £1 on a £200 bill. Their mistake not ours! She then proceeded to come back with the credit card machine and ask for the £1!! Her mistake - why didn’t she simply deduct it from the service charge which amounted to £25 rather than chase £1?? This didn’t resonate as the behaviour of a Michelin starred establishment fixing their own mistake. The meal in the restaurant was superb and matched expectations having been before on business. We loved the fact that the table waiter and the sommelier both didn’t try to oversell the dishes. We had a great bottle and a number of the 4th Rifles Thornbridge beer made especially for Gymkhana. But the cocktail lounge treatment left a very bad taste

Would give Gymkhana six stars if I could.

Was lucky enough to grab a table when bookings for the week I was in London opened. This was one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. First, the food. Unlike many fine dining restaurants, they feed you. Generous portions of hands down the best Indian food I've ever had (and I've had a lot). The butter chicken, pappadums, and Goan prawn curry were all outstanding. The smell of the naan was just absolutely heavenly. The service was as good if not better. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and saved us from over ordering (see above re portion size). He said we'd just have to come back to try the rest of the amazing food on the menu. The only thing that would keep me from going back is being unable to find a table because it's so (rightly) popular. But if I can get a table, I'm going back every chance I can.

Had a great dinner at Gymkhana - we got the pappadum, samosas, butter chicken, briyani and garlic naan. The highlight of the meal was definitely the briyani! Everything was delicious and the service was amazing. The food was quite pricy however, but we knew that going in, especially since it is a 2 MIchelin star restaurant.

Review is for Bar 42 only - the sister bar connected to Gymkhana - leaving here because yelp doesn't have anything for Bar 42. 5 stars for cocktails alone, giving 4 because the snack options were sparse and quite disappointing for being part of such a highly praised restaurant. Anyway, come here for the cocktails! This is by far the best lychee martini I've ever had - Nobu no longer holds the top spot. Wow. So clean and fresh and not syrupy sweet. I had 4. Whoops. All of the drinks on the menu looked incredible and I'd love to branch out and try some of their other cocktails. I'm sure they're all good. For the food, they really don't offer much which is a bummer seeing as they are part of gymkhana. For the table we ordered: The nuts (cashews & almonds that tasted like they had Trader Joe's everything but the bagel seasonings); the kalamata olives (it seemed people liked these, and they were flavorful, I'm just not a big olive gal); the chips/crisps and yogurt dip (crisps were light and airy and tossed in aromatic seasoning powder, the yogurt was just plain yogurt with chives). You've gotta order them because it's all they offer but I want impressed and think they can do better. Out of the three I chose the chips and dip.

Such a miserable experience! After making a res 4 weeks in advance they would not let our 15 1/2 yo in the restaurant and turned us away (in the very fine print). Such arrogance and pretension. If you place any value on family, I would pass and spend $$$ on a place with any heart and value for the patron experience. What a disaster.

Just a delightful restaurant. The cuisine is excellent. The waitstaff were perfectly attentive without being pushy. The only thing I would caution if doing the tasting menu is that it is a lot of food! I had eaten almost nothing that entire day but still couldn’t finish. If we were to do it over, I would choose to purchase a la carte.

We really enjoyed dining at Gymkhana and thought the food was amazing! The service was prompt, the servers were all very friendly and made us feel at home and did not miss a beat throughout the entire meal. The ambiance was cozy so we felt at home and we could enjoy each other's company and talk at a normal level. The food was AMAZING - very flavorful and loved the different bites throughout the meal. We definitely will be back and will highly recommend this place to anyone visiting London.

Had heard so much about this place that I decided to venture solo without a booking this rainy wet Tuesday morning. The hostess was absolutely fantastic and welcoming and gave me a table on the condition that I return it in 90 minutes - not a problem for me at all!! The servers were very knowledgeable and warm and quick with an explanation of the menu and dishes. I ordered two starters, nimbu pani, mango lassi and masala chai. Wiped the plates clean. Amazing taste. Left feeling fulfilled. It's not often that a much hyped up place lives upto its high expectations - luckily today was once such day overall. Great ambiance resembling "Gymkhana's from the yesteryears. Loved every minute. Thanks Gymkhana team.

Very pleasant but better than less expensive competitors?

4/5 by 👻 @Tandy on 05/27/2024

The service was good generally and especially good from the head waiter. The food was very good but not staggeringly ‘oh my goodness’ good. Dishoom is a very close competitor I think. Not sure how it gets a Michelin never mind 2 and £175 is plenty for a couple of starters and mains with breads. I only had one beer! Nice touch with the complimentary Lassi but you didn’t need it as the food was not too spicy. There was 2 puddles of pee under the urinals which you might expect in a city pub but not a Michelin Restaurant. I don’t think I would go again but pleasant meal.

Loyd took care of us with utmost care and was extremely attentive and provided helpful tips about the food and portions. His personal touch stood out the most to me. All the staff we came in contact with were genuine and very nice . The aloo chat , the chutney accompaniment to the papadams were very tasty. The chicken tikka and salmon were also super tasty. As for the Naan , I thought it was bit on the harder side but still flavorful.

Extraordinary from every aspect

5/5 by 👻 @corgi1234 on 03/18/2024

Gymkhana is truly extraordinary from every aspect. First, the restaurant is a very attractive, comfortable and quiet space. The tables are well spaced. Second, the staff at all levels are just superb-----from managers to hosts to waiters. All staff are warm, friendly and extremely helpful. Waiters were knowledgeable and very patient and described fully all items of interest on the menu. Thirdly, the food is exquisite……perfectly cooked and spiced and attractively presented. Portions are more than adequate. As to a recommended item, I would suggest everything on the menu. Gymkhana has two well deserved Michelin stars. Michelin describes three star restaurants as “worth a journey.” Gymkhana certainly falls into the “worth a journey” category. I will go as often as possible. A remarkable place!!

On vacation from the United States ... Indian cuisine is my favorite ethnic food. Ambience was excellent. Service was solid but our waiter was difficult to understand. Best tandoori chicken I've had in my entire life! Fair play! The buttered chicken was good but not special. But oddly, this Michelin star restaurant served easily the WORST naan bread I've ever eaten. How do you screw that up if you're a restaurant at this level?? That such a simple thing tasted subpar affected the entire meal. I'm from New Jersey, which has a huge East Indian population and a wealth of good Indian restaurants. I can find better naan in pretty much any strip mall Indian restaurant in my state. Bizarre.

The New Standard for Indian Cuisine

5/5 by 👻 @GrungeTraveler on 03/12/2024

The interior design, especially in the lower level is immaculate. I decided upon trying their Lunch Tasting Menu. My favorite dishes were the Saag Makai and of course their iconic Butter Chicken. The Butter Chicken is literal perfection. The Aloo Chaat starter was also uniquely tasty. The Goan Cafreal Salmon Tikka with Tomato Chutney was marvelous as well. The service was great, my water was promptly refilled the whole meal and silverware was reset between every course immediately after the removal of my previous dish. The wait staff were knowledgeable and informative on each dish presented. This was a lovely meal and the lunch set menu offers a great value and variety. I left stuffed to the gills with barely being able to finish all the courses. Without hesitation, book a reservation!

Our first time at this establishment and I am glad I haven’t read the negative reviews - for us everything was perfect: the food, the service, the ambiance and the drinks. We were there for lunch and we opted for the set menu. The Achari Paneer Tikka, Kasoori Chicken Tikka and Goan Cafreal Salmon Tikka were excellent but rather too big portions for an appetiser. The Goan Prawn Curry and Kid Goat Methi Keema were again excellent. For £49 a head it was an excellent value for money as well.

A Disappointing Return to Gymkhana: A Birthday Celebration Turns Awry

1/5 by 👻 @Suki B on 02/28/2024

As I stepped into Gymkhana, my expectations were high, having previously enjoyed the excellent food and service for the first time back in October 2022. However, what was meant to be a birthday treat for my better half turned into an unmitigated disaster, revealing a stark contrast to my prior experiences. The first letdown was the table placement at the front of the restaurant. Having previously dined in more secluded booths, I failed to notice the poor spacing at the front. The proximity to other diners compromised any semblance of privacy, making maneuvering between tables a troublesome affair. The table setting seemed too casual for a Michelin-starred establishment, lacking the expected formality with cutlery placed haphazardly atop folded napkins. The absence of table linen further added to the un-Michelin atmosphere. Despite these initial disappointments, the sommelier managed to momentarily salvage the experience. The Chablis, perfectly chilled to the correct temperature, was poured with precision. Sadly, this marked the pinnacle of Michelin-worthy service for the evening. The downfall began as we placed our orders early, only to encounter a language barrier with the waitstaff. Then, despite my Indian origin, I was surprised to be asked if I needed the menu explained. The Punjabi Samosas and Gol Guppa were ordered, the latter arriving first. In an unfortunate turn of events, my girlfriend experienced discomfort as she began to eat, feeling the unwarranted gaze of the waitress fixated upon her. One can't help but wonder if this uncomfortable scrutiny arose from a misguided assumption that the white girl at the table lacked familiarity with the proper way to consume Gol Guppa. While the Gol Guppa proved delightful, the experience was further marred by the intrusive clearing of plates and cutlery while my girlfriend still held a morsel in her hand. This unnecessary haste left us feeling harassed and rushed. In a departure from the customary inquiries such as "Is everything to your liking?" and other tactful phrases, the relentless repetition of the question "Is everything good?" struck a chord as an excessive and somewhat aggressive departure from the norm. The intrusive nature of this inquiry not only deviated from the expected dining pleasantries but also left an impression of unnecessary and overbearing scrutiny, further diminishing the overall dining experience. The Punjabi Samosas, when they arrived, were mediocre, falling short of the standard found in many local curry houses. Despite the attentive sommelier, an overzealous waiter repeatedly topped up our glasses, pouring an excess of wine. This rushed service continued as the table was cleared before we could finish our starters, and we were immediately questioned about our main course preferences. The subsequent re-setting of the table was equally chaotic, with cutlery carelessly placed in the center of my setting (not to the side, or either side!), and my girlfriend's utensils slammed down and awkwardly dragged across the table and adjusted by the waiter, for whom the act of repositioning the cutlery required a somewhat awkward contortion across the table. It seems that the less-than-ideal table pitch played a significant role in this. Even as my wine glass was continually over-replenished, we decided to call it quits by requesting the bill at a mere 15 minutes past our booking time. To the credit of the manager, he inquired about our abrupt departure and insisted we not pay for the unsatisfactory experience. Regrettably, this visit to Gymkhana proved to be far from the relaxing and enjoyable dining experience we had anticipated. It appears that an outstanding experience at Gymkhana may be reserved for individuals bearing the name Giles Coren. For the rest of us mere mortals, the alterative prospect of paying someone to orchestrate such an ordeal, leaving us feeling aggrieved and our wallets ablaze, might be more preferable. Thus, it is with disappointment that we declare our decision not to return to Gymkhana.

Underwhelming

2/5 by 👻 @SkyCheshire_UK on 02/21/2024

We have been lucky enough to eat in some wonderful restaurants in London, but unfortunately Gymkhana is not one of them. The food was only ok and the service - whilst friendly - was variable. The wine list was expensive - even by London standards. It's also a shame that the menu contains only minimal information, as we like to be able to read about the ingredients and how the dish is cooked when choosing what we want to eat. While the staff did provide information about the dishes, it is hard to hold details of numerous dishes in your head! The meal and experience did not merit the £100 per head price tag. It was very disappointing, as we hoped for more from a restaurant awarded a second Mitchelin star recently.

So disappointing

1/5 by 👻 @Netteflondon on 02/17/2024

Were Seated downstairs and waited ages to be served despite being almost empty. Ordered papadams which were all different and not enough for four people so ordered another portion again waited ages. My starter was just ok as a vegan. I still think not enough variety for a vegan. My guests had kebabs which were certainly not tasty. I had a side dhall and when I say side it was such a tiny portion but was quite good. My aloo side was just like boiled potatoes and tasteless I mentioned this and it was taken away and I was not charged. My daughter had the paneer curry which even to look at was horrible it was a creamy colour and looked like something I’m Not going to say. My daughter hardly ate any of it and the waiter took it away and never said a word. The whole time we were sitting there huge plates of food were going past us to the staff sitting behind us. It was like Piccadilly Circus and very distracting. They certainly got bigger portions. My husband had the prawn curry which was watery with no marination and he counted 3 large prawns. No draught lager available just extremely expensive small bottles. I read reviews and chose this for a birthday meal. We have the most fabulous restaurants in Wembley and this restaurant comes nowhere near whilst I appreciate rent and rates are high in Mayfair the prices for what we thought as regular diners of curry are just extortionate. Maybe the chef had an off day. We will never return.

Food: ordered the aloo chaat, tandoori masala lamb chops, chicken butter masala, and the dal maharani. The chaat and the dal were both standouts, with amazing flavor and immediate comfort. The lamb chops were also good, but a few of the pieces were a bit overdone. The chicken butter masala was a heightened version of your typical butter chicken, with more complex and layered flavors and spices. For dessert, we had a selection of sorbets (coconut & lime, mango) and ice cream (South Indian filter coffee), which were incredibly refreshing. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, explaining the dishes and recommending which selections would complement each other. Highly recommend a meal here.

Honestly it used to be one of the best Indian restaurants in London. But when I tell you it has fallen off a cliff I am not exaggerating. The food was barely recognizable. We got the tasting menu and in addition to the service being slow and the waiters seeming like we were in their way, the food...oh my god I was so disappointed. The naan was burnt and the black daal that we look forward to so much tasted bland and unseasoned. Save yourself a bad evening and go to Dishoom. Much better food and service.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to Gymkhana London at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the Gymkhana London page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.
