HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Fantastic wings, delicious food, warm atmosphere, fun to
Fantastic wings, delicious food, warm atmosphere, fun to watch the kitchen. We came early and did a la carte.
The food was good - unique, interesting and delicious.
The ambiance was very chill and upbeat. It's the service which fails. The restaurant was half full when we went, so overwork isn't an excuse. But the servers were so rushed whether they were taking orders and answering questions. I asked one person to identify the herbs on one plate of bun cha and she identified two (the most common ones). When I inquired about the other two she actually looked irritated! I thought that was really poor form. My neighbors had never had Vietnamese food before and the waiter gave them few directions on how to eat their meal. The waiter (another one) buzzed right by several times and eventually we wound up teaching them what to do. That's just outrageous. They said that they liked the food, specially the chicken wings, but wouldn't come back, The food in this restaurant is unique and deserves a decent explanation. But the service just doesn't live up to the vibe. I'm surprised Steve Dolinsky said their service had "matured." He wrote this several years ago and I thought the service should have matured by now. It's too bad. I really support the owners after the history they had with their partner but they need to get professional waitstaff who really sell and love the food as opposed to just serving it.
Quite possibly my favorite happy hour in town.
Excellent drinks and food. We tried new things off the happy hour menu and absolutely loved the bun cha and fried calamari. The grilled pork in the bun cha was flavorful and tender and the broth in the dish was perfect for a rainy day like today. I especially loved HaiSous' take on fried calamari and the sauce underneath and texture of the calamari was lovely. It's best to eat the calamari right away and not let it sit, however, as the sauce underneath gradually softens the calamari and takes away the fried texture. Overall, everything was 10/10. Solid, solid spot for happy hour.
My brother-in-law advertised this as the best Vietnamese in
My brother-in-law advertised this as the best Vietnamese in Chicago, so we ventured in for a tasting. Certainly not your typical Vietnamese restaurant (ie not just pho!). The waitress advised us for a party of 6, to order 8-9 dishes to share, but I don't think that takes into consideration the huuuge platters Be warned if you dabble there! The food was overall delish, with exception of the fried fluke (but any fried fish is amongst my least favorite food as I feel it really takes away any freshness and essence of the fish). All around group favs included the octopus, grilled ribeye steak, bun cha (soup noodles Hanoi style), and crab fried rice. I'd say check it out if you're in town - good representation of authentic Vietnamese in this side of the world!
Came here for my boyfriend's birthday.
We ordered the chicken wings and grilled oysters to start off. They were decently sized, crispy, and perfectly balanced between salty and sweet. However, I would pass on the grilled oysters-- saw someone here described them as raw oysters slightly warmed... and it was exactly that. Moving onto the main course, I was pretty disappointed in the portion size of the prawns and snow crab claws. The garlic butter sauce made up for this. It was rich and umami and soso good I could drink it straight up. We ordered the smallest size fluke (MP $55) which is prefect for 2-3 people. The fish was served with lettuce and herbs. It was very tasty, highly recommend!

This is a fav when visiting Chicago! I haven't had anything that I didn't enjoy and at this point I've tried everything on the menu. With the delicious food, excellent service, and chill vibe this place is a must for high quality delicious Vietnamese food in Chicago!
Lovvvved the happy hour specials, crab rice and chicken!
Lovvvved the happy hour specials, crab rice and chicken! It's a great vibe! Beautiful space. Our first encounter with the hostess wasn't great; her delivery was subpar to say the least. We were unaware you had to have a reservation for happy hour and happy hour wasn't honored in the dinning area and that was their only availability so we opted to leave. Pilsen is a great area to find kinder people and a great happy hour, so that's what we did! Howewever, we found a reservation for the following day, on a Saturday! So that's fun! It was great! Pretty empty as we sat as soon as they open, 4pm. Waiter was kind and handsome. Drinks were delicious; fresh and tasty! We were absolutely satisfied with everything! We'd be back for sure!

If you are on the fence about going let me push over and say just go! From the friendly service , to the delicious food , HaiSous is a hit. The restaurant is beautifully designed and decorated, I loved being able to look into the kitchen. There are spider webs in the bathroom that need to be dusted out but overall a great experience.
Since we only live a few blocks away, my wife and I walked
Since we only live a few blocks away, my wife and I walked down to HaiSous yesterday afternoon for Happy Hour. I arrived 5 minutes before my wife and noticed 4 open stools at the bar. There was a reserved sign on the bar for two of the stools. The other two were at the end of the bar but had no reserved sign. I asked the hostess if we could be seated and she said no but they did have open tables. Not knowing Happy Hour was only available at the bar, I took a seat and waited a few minutes for my wife to arrive. I asked the server if we could get the Happy Hour menu and he then advised it was only available at the bar. Having now been informed, I walked back to the front and met my wife. I noticed the two open stools no longer had a reserved sign and the stools were open. I asked if we could be seated and again the Hostess said no and the server behind the bar then slid the reserved sign back on the bar. It was about 5:00 PM at this point. We said we would wait for two spots to open while staring at the two open stools. We asked how long it might be and the Hostess said 6:00PM, one hour, which happens to be when happy hour was over. We left very disappointed and walked down the street to Pilsen Yards for Happy Hour, and had plenty of service with servers that had great attitudes. We were at PY for 30 minutes or so, walked back past HaiSous and noticed the same two stools were still open. I wonder why they removed the reserved sign after they seated me for a few minutes at a table, and then put it back when I came back to the front? My wife and I won't go back. The food is great so we will miss the place but the service and attitude of the hostess sets the tone for the experience. Service: 1/5
Important note Parking is challenged! Which is why I gave 4
Important note Parking is challenged! Which is why I gave 4 stars. Street parking mostly free after hours but they need to see if they can use a community lot. As for the restaurant the ambiance was inviting and calming. The service was exceptional and quick. The waiter took his time to explain things and make recommendations. The food is considered shared plates but if you have a large appetite the sharing plate may not be enough. The dumplings were delicious the rich creamy cocunut butter broth was unique and complimentary to the dumpling. The oysters were great. I added a dash of hot sauce and let's say I could have eaten another half dozen great flavor with our without hot sauce. The crispy chicken wings...exactly as described crispy and full of flavor. The grilled prawns were great size and cooked perfectly as well as the octopus. My primary meal was the rice noodle dish which had a great taste in general but as I continued to eat it the sweetness of the tamarind sauce became too much for me. However I would oreder again with the sauce on the side or easy topping of it. I got the whipped banana dessert for my birthday treat..it wasn't complimentary..I ordered it and it was delicious in my opinion.. airy with pieces of banana, roasted peanuts and the banana crackers to support it. Lastly, another highlight is the plentiful drink options. The Alina was an excellent wine. It was full bodied South African red that was balanced, velvety, and delicious.
This is my new favorite restaurant in Chicago.
I had a religious experience with every bite. It is OUTSTANDING! I'm celiac and the gluten free options were endless. I dream about the pork soup w/ egg rolls and the banana cream dessert. Service was incredible too, everything was top tier.
Overall, the food was great and outstanding.
Not a typical Vietnamese restaurant, the dishes are all innovative and creative. Papaya Salad: very different than the Thai style papaya salad. It does not have the vinaigrette tastes, instead it focuses more on the spiciness. The beef jerky adds more chewiness and flavor to the dish. I generally prefer the Thai version because I love sour taste, this is based on personal preference. Curry: A sweet curry, probably due to the coconut milk and sweet potatoes. The veggie chunks add a great texture to the dish. It is a perfect combination with the rice. Not a typical and traditional curry that you usually have. Chicken Wings: one of the most popular dishes, the sauce is sweet and sour. Definitely a great choice to start the meal. Crab fried rice: the rice is on the soft side. It has a little bit of spiciness to it (not a lot). It was a great combination with the curry. This dish is not made of imitation crab, so this is a huge plus for me. Seafood Platter: this was definitely my favorite dish we ordered. The seafood was fresh and juicy. The seasoning for the oysters was definitely unique. The dipping sauce and powder matched well with the seafood. Definitely a must try dish in the restaurant. Eggplant: another of my favorite dish! The eggplant was well flavored and everyone loved this dish. I think this is definitely a must order vegetable dish! Grilled pork: a unique way of eating "pho," by dipping everything on the platter into the pork soup. If you love pho then this is must try for you. I personally thought it was kind of greasy, but all my friends loved it. The service was also excellent. Our server kindly recommended us with some good choices. The environment was comfortable, cozy, and upbeat. Definitely recommend to make reservations ahead of time because they can really busy.
Don't walk.
...run!! Not sure what I was expecting but Haisous Vietnamese Kitchen exceeded all expectations! Went out on a Friday night for dinner and drinks. I sat at the bar and was so happy I was finally able to check this place out. The ambience is nice and intimate. Plenty of seating at the bar and in the front of the restaurant. There is another section with seating in the back of the and it's a bit more lighting. Big ups to my servers and bartenders. Jose, Ranado, and Marty took great care of me and my friend that night! Service was top tier! They were so helpful and so nice. Thru will definitely take care of you. They always checked on us to see if there was anything we needed and they gave great recommendations as far as what food and drinks to order. Everything that we ordered was sooooo delicious! But hands down my favorite dish was the crab fried rice. Do yourself a favor and check them out. Oh and did I mention that they have a happy hour?! It's a great selection of drinks and apps for a very reasonable price. I can't wait to go back.
I guess I should have looked at the menu before coming but
I guess I should have looked at the menu before coming but honestly I expected more from a Vietnamese Restaurant. There's like 10 entrees to choose from and nothing is pho, which is something I expect from a Vietnamese restaurant. I ordered curry and crab fried rice to split with a friend. The amount of curry for the price was okay but the amount of fried rice for the price was steep. I didn't dare order any appetizers because $17 for 6 chicken wings sounded insane. Overall taste felt more Thai food than Vietnamese food. I also don't understand how I was supposed to eat my curry? Normally Vietnamese curry is eaten with bread, but no bread came with it so I ate it with the fried rice, but I had to ask for a spoon so honestly I have no idea how they expected me to eat it on my plate... My friends got the seafood tower and that looked pretty neat. I didn't have any so I have no opinion on it. The cocktail I got was delicious. I got a reservation for my party at opening time so it was a pretty peaceful eating experience. OpenTable only lets you book up to 8 people and we tried calling to book for 9 and the lady on the phone said that wasn't possible and long story short we ended up with 2 reservations with "no guarantee (we) would sit together". But on the day of, they changed my reservation to 9 people and cancelled my friend's reservation. Also I found out that you have a 2 hr and 15 min limit at the table for large parties here. Idk overall I wasn't too thrilled for this restaurant but nothing was really bad about it. I probably wouldn't go again because I can't afford it lol and it's not really Vietnamese food in my opinion (as a Vietnamese person). Just remember it's BYOBread.
Great trendy spot with tastefully designed Asian menu and
Great trendy spot with tastefully designed Asian menu and interior decor. Check out their happy hour from 4-6pm at the bar for affordable versions of their food and drinks. I ordered the Chili Claims with Rice Crackers - very tasty, served cold with 3 large rice crackers. I think the ratio could've been improved with more rice crackers and a spicier flavoring, as there wasn't much chili flavor to the crabs. It was still pretty delectable and moist. I also got the Octopus Salad served with Eggplant and Coconut Cream - I'm a big fan of eggplants, usually grilled or stir fried with garlic. While the texture was pretty similar to what I was used to, the lukewarm nature of the salad along with pieces of octopus would've probably been a little tastier if they served warm or grilled. The texture was pretty good. The flavor of the coconut cream was a little surprising, sweet, and cooling, but perhaps not in the way that I was envisioning. It was almost a little too sweet. I'd still go back to try their other happy hour dishes, which are a steal at $10 each. These two dishes satisfied me enough at 4PM (I arrived upon open), but had I been any hungrier, I would've gotten the Pork Patties Noodle dish too. My friend got it, and it looked pretty sizeable. Definitely come here with a fun group of friends - bring your appetite and drink up! HaiSous does modern Vietnamese fusion right.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
