Scary Dining Experience at Hamlet and Ghost
My husband and I dined here with another couple. While they ordered the double cheeseburger, we ordered haddock and breast of duck dinners. The servings were so small that they looked ridiculous on the plates. But that was the least of the problems. The waiter told me that the chef recommended the duck cooked medium rare. I never like food prepared like that so I should have declined but I didn't. The meat was decidedly undercooked and tasted terrible. I couldn't finish it and definitely did not want to take the rest home. There was some other kind of meager vegetable serving that was edible, barely. My husband's haddock was virtually tasteless. We had no appetizers, our dinners, two beers and one drink, coffee and desert for $160+ not including tip. We will not be going back. It's just not worth it.
Be the first to ReplyVery charming place with superb food and drinks.
What an amazing place this is for a night out for dinner and a drink. Every time I have been here the food is always excellent. And the wine is delicious too. The ambiance has a cozy charm and I highly recommend it.

Tried this place for the first time with friends who love eating here. Overall I was a bit disappointed with the limited menu, and the over salted food. The wine list was also limited. They did have a decent list of craft cocktails but sizes of drinks were very small. I wouldnโt eat here again.

Dinner at Hamlet & Ghost started off promising and ended with disappointment. Our server was very friendly. A number of menu items werenโt available at 7:30. The cheese curds were delicious. The BBQ oyster mushrooms were swimming in oil and very salty. We then waited 45 minutes for our entree (halibut) which was dry and also over-salted and not at all flavorful. We then waited and waited for the bill. When it finally came our server had voluntarily removed the charge for the mushrooms even though we only commented on the saltiness after being asked what we thought. During dinner, in full view of the bar staff, a very drunk customer came over to our table โto talkโ. It was super uncomfortable and an ambiance we had never experienced in a highly reviewed restaurant. Itโs possible that we just showed up on the wrong night and should have not sat in the bar area. The restaurant is aspirational, but not very good at execution. We regretted the choice of Hamlet and Ghost for our one night in Saratoga Springs.
Be the first to ReplyBoth great and not great (hit or miss?)
My sweetie and I came to Hansel & Ghost on a trip to Saratoga Springs to celebrate our anniversary. The host and our server were lovely, the restaurant has a commitment to supporting back-of-the-house staff, and the drinks were superb. I didn't want to make a thing of it while we were there but it seems worth reporting that both dishes I ordered had issues and for that reason, I would not categorize this as a restaurant suitable for vegetarians (if our food is not as good, then it doesn't count). The salad had a lot of slimy greens. Maybe there hadn't been a delivery in a few days (holiday weekend) but in that case, if "the menu changes daily," take that salad off the menu! I was excited about the pasta I ordered because the restaurant name-checked Sfoglini and "gigante beans" are my favorite. The pasta arrives with, well, small beans, which made it feel more like a glorified mac n cheese, which is not what a vegetarian wants to eat for a special dinner. Again, if the menu changes daily, just change the menu! My partner's food was good. So, Hansel & Ghost, step up the vegetarian entree game. * Let me note for future vegetarian travelers to Saratoga Springs that it appears that overall this is not a place that has a lot of options. Many menus had zero vegetarian options, especially among the more special occasion restaurants.

ambiance peaceful; head female Matre'De'; NOT "standing at her post" close to the front door! "popping" up and "disappearing" frequently periodically. "SMALL PLATES" as stated on the menu ---------"a squirrel's snack" -------- HEAVILY OVERPRICED; NY STRIP STEAK (HEAVILY OVERPRICED!!!!!) / RICE PUDDING DESSERT"TWICE AS MUCH AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN "COMMON SENSE" WOULD JUSTIFY THAT!!!! BILL OF FARE; INCLUDES "KITCHEN ADMINISTRATION FEE" (PRE JULY 4TH (2023) ---- as it's mentioned on the dinner menu in very fine print. IF THE LIGHTING IN THE RESTAURANT WAS similar to an office desk lighting the (fine print) fee would "jump up and out at you"!!!! like 'JAWS 4. NAME OF THE RESTAURANT; ENDING IN "GHOST"? ------ HAMLET "COMMETH" AND THE "GHOST" TAKETH AWAY! "CLEARED-OUT--- HOUSE AND BASEMENT"! THE "ONE" RATING GIVEN; WOULD BE ON THE "NEGATIVE SIDE" (PLUS A ZERO FOLLOWETH TOO!"

The food and drinks here are fantastic! You canโt go wrong with any of it. Our table had a gin fizz, reserved old fashioned, pumpkin mai tai. We ordered the duck fat fries, lamb ragu, my strip and duck breast - all seasoned and cooked to perfection! Would go back every day if I could!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful place, but not great with allergies
We've gone to Hamlet & Ghost a few times as locals and have been impressed by their creative cocktail (& mocktail!) menu and food menu. The Ghostface mocktail especially keeps me coming back. However, all 3 times that I have gone to Hamlet & Ghost, I've had concerns about my dairy allergy. Here's what happened: Many of their desserts seem *so close* to being dairy-free or vegan, but they are always surprisingly not. I tried ordering the cucumber sorbet and was told that it had whey in it (a sorbet traditionally does not have dairy). I tried ordering a dessert with a coconut milk base, but was told it still had dairy in some part of it. The server then suggested the horchata rice pudding with caramel sauce and said they'd check with the kitchen to see if it was made with a coconut milk base so that I could have it. They said that only the fried dough topping contained dairy, so I ordered it. I started to eat it, but then didn't feel comfortable continuing. Horchata, rice pudding, and caramel sauce traditionally each have dairy in them, so I found it hard to believe that they were all completely dairy-free. This especially brought concerns because the same waiter had requested our duck fat french fries to come out without the cheese curds so I could have them, then he came by, after we'd already started eating them, and noticed the cheese curds were still included. So he pointed it out, but it was already risky for me to be eating them. Finally, on the most recent trip, I noted my allergy when ordering the burger (removing the cheese). It seems like it still came out slathered in butter (though I could've been wrong!). So I have lost faith in my allergy being taken seriously here and always have to continue with caution, as much as I love the place. I would like to note that the bartenders were fabulous, friendly, and great overall - they also said how much they love working here, which I think says a lot!
Be the first to ReplySticking it to the consumer
5 months ago I gave this restaurant 5 stars. Now I am lowering it to 3 stars. Not for the food or service, but for management passing a 4% kitchen administrative fee onto it's customers. It is not the responsibility of the consumer to cure the discrepancy in food service industry. With that reasoning then we'd have to cure the discrepancies in other industries as well. The menu prices have increased and I understand that, but to add 4% to the bill on top of increased costs is going too far. Management needs to remember the consumer is already experiencing inflation with gas, food, utilities, healthcare, etc. To whom shall we pass this onto?

A truly wonderful meal. Great drink menu. Delicious food. Great service. Loved the oysters and the fried curds. Gem salad and shrimp and grits were terrific. Loved the place.
