Be the first to ReplyI canโt hear you.
The service was slow; the menu was limited, and the wine was overpriced, but what really put us off was the noise. You could not have a conversation. The waitress could not hear our order. It was impossible to relax. Everyone was yelling. It was purgatory. You could have a better meal at McDonalds.

Amazing meal with great ambiance. Had the mushroom pizza as an appetizer and was not disappointed. The duck for the main course as absolutely amazing. Will be on repeat list on future visits.
Be the first to Replyrude host & terrible experience
Tried to take my three young children to a Friday dinner. Continuous insults from the host who was clearly just interested in churning tables than any type of service. I live in amagansett and am ashamed to have a local place treat people in this way. Disgraceful

We experienced a wonderful welcome and great meal here, on arriving in Amagansett. Thank you for a relaxed and attentive evening with accomplished comfort food.

We happened upon the restaurant while walking on the street, it looked interesting, so we stopped in. With indoor and outdoor dining options available, we chose outdoor. Everyone was so pleasant. The service was spot on and the pizza was delicious. I would highly recommend a visit.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced + Bad Food + Poor Service
The only thing Italian about this place is the name. The appetizers (Baccala & charred Octopus) were hard as a rock almost uneatable and the main dishes (Skirt Steak & Duck) were just ok. Creativity in the kitchen can be great but when the execution is poor nothing really works.
The service was awkward at best. Multiple servers came to our table one right after another, asking us the same things and interrupting our meal. None of them noticed our empty wine or water glasses, so we had to pour for ourselves all night long.
In the end our bill came and it was $350 for two of us to dine. We are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination but if Iโm going to spend that much money on dinner, I would much rather eat at St Ambroeus or Dopo Argento where the food is delicious and the service is impeccable.
We will definitely not be dining at Il Buco again and I recommend that you skip this place as well.
Delicious food and atmosphere
Everything was delicious. We did shareable a and loved the octopus as my favorite. Also really enjoyed the flank steak. We didnโt have a waiter at first so took a little to order but after that service was great. Overall a wonderful experience. Also aesthetic and atmosphere was calming & beautiful.
Be the first to ReplyTop tier authentic Italian in the Hamptons
Fantastic, genuine Mediterranean summer fare, which stands out miles ahead of the competing Italian restaurants in the Hamptons -- as far as its kitchen's execution, the originality and authenticity of the menu, focus on quality and locality of ingredients and the value (given the area, of course) it's by far the winner. I'm mainly writing this review because I was curious to see if the liquor license had been granted and in reading other reviews I was shocked that someone had a negative reaction to the branzino, which to me was an absolute home run and I feel like I need to go to bat for this place based on the branzino alone.
So Il Buco's MO Is its authentically rustic aesthetic and its old world, off the beaten track, no-BS, "they've-been-doin-it-this-way-for-generations" energy way thats typical of many lesser touristy Mediterranean communities but is increasingly rare there and nearly impossible to find stateside. Maybe il Buco's mistake is simply overestimating its new clientele by assuming that that they can appreciate an intentionally unfussy menu that lets its fresh and seasonal ingredients shine or that they even know how to eat a freshly caught fish. If what you want is a tuxedoed waiter who serves crusty white bread and whipped butter to you on a bleached white tablecloth and you can order off menu, this place will not do it for you. They're gonna stick to the script that made their other two joints in the city so successful.
I respect them for serving wild caught fish on the boneโ I mean, a whole lobster also takes substantial effort to eat but most people wouldn't dare ask the kitchen at a nice place to dismember it for them. It's messy and laborious but for a dish intended for two I thought it was appropriately priced and hope they keep it in the menuโ ive been coming back to Il Buco al mare for The whole fish all summer even without the place having their liquor license (btw when's that happening!!!) The prawns also were excellent and transported me to summers in Sicily or corsica. Skirt steak was super memorable too. Dessert menu could definitely be more developed but that's not necessarily what I know Il Buco for.
The end!
Very Very interesting (in a good way)!
My wife and I came with no expectations and we were delighted with the meal.
Staff: Attentive but young
Decor: Very nice, we sat inside but the outside seating look attractive and fun.
Liquor/Wine Note: As of August 4 they were still waiting for their Liquor License.
Menu: Limited at this point. But not limited in flavor
Price: It's the East End. That said we walked away feeling that the total bill ($220 for 2) was worth it. Nothing worse than dropping a large bill for a very forgettable meal and that did not happen here.
My wife and I both order the Striped Bass ($38) and an appetizer of clams.
The striped bass itself was a decent size, well cooked and fresh ( it better be out hereon the East End). But the corn and early girl tomatoes bed it rested on was terrific...I mean really exceptional. I tried t wheedle the recipe from the waiter but not sure I got the recipe other than lemon juice and some slightly hot spices (hot enough to be interesting, not "tears in the eyes" heat. Just wonderful.
The clams were very good, fresh and smaller (Littlenecks). There was a spice in the sauce that I could not identify other than I knew I did not like it. The said I am glad I ordered as my wife did not detect my offending spice. The only hick-up was that the appetizer did not come before the meal. Having dined out a number of times during Covid we are forgiving as 5 star service is the exception, not the rule now. Read The Points Guy article about this on line.
Looking forward to another visit, but probably after the crowds diminish out here( If they ever do!).
Bold, unique cooking
When you've grown tired of the lobster rolls, fried seafood platters, and all the other predictable offerings of Hamptons restaurants, give this place a try. It offers dishes and styles of preparation and seasoning that you probably haven't had anywhere else. Most of the dishes we had were excellent, a few had some near-miss aspects but I was still pleased to have tried them as they all had unique qualities to them. "Foodies" will find the cooking here fascinating. Service was congenial and helpful. Notwithstanding the name of the place, the cuisine is not especially Italian but more nouvelle international. There aren't many restaurant bargains in this area; prices for some dishes here seemed rather aggressive. I'm glad we went.
Be the first to ReplyBuco Means "Hole" in Italian. Perhaps because...
Dinner at Il Buco al Mare was not a bad experience, but it was not memorable. Let me start with the positive. The hostess was charming; the waiter was friendly and professional; the staff was attentive. And the branzino was delicious.
So, what was the problem? The problem were a few "holes" in the overall experience. Not their fault that they don't have a liquor license, yet, but definitely it detracts from the dining experience. Plus, customers are not allowed by law to do BYOB.
Another "hole" was the branzino for two. The waiter informed us that they are not equipped to filet it in the kitchen. We are not sure why, but that is what it is. We ordered it nonetheless and it came on a large plate with no utensils. Not even a jagged edge knife to cut through the skin. A spatula to plate the fish in individual plates would have been helpful, too. We were surprised that they had not thought about it.
The branzino came with one side dish. The waiter asked whether we wanted to add a side dish. We chose artichokes. They were served well before the branzino came to the table. It was hardly a side dish. In fact, it was basically a segue to the appetizers.
Last but not least, the water bottle was empty, but nobody noticed and did not get refilled.
None of these "holes" were mortal sins, but we sure hope Il Buco will make an effort to polish things up. Perhaps we will wait until the fall, before we give it a second shot.
