Used to be even better than it is now but is still pretty good and is my regular go to Izakaya to get a Nihongo fix when I crave it.
Be the first to ReplyThis is for me the best Izakaya in San Diego.
Unlike other Ramen shop, the broth and overall taste of their Hakata Ramen has not changed over the years, including covid years. I'd rather spend my money on a traditional style ramen with great consistency or pay for overrated hit or miss ramen shops in Convoy. My go-to for Ramen and Lobster Roll! Thanks Izakaya Masa!!

Step inside and be transported to a true to life Japanese bar. By far, my all time favorite Japanese restaurant. This is a longkept secret gem right cantered between Hillcrest and Mission Hills. Serving up Japanese favorites such as ramen and sushi. My favorite items are actually izakaya staples like takoyaki, grilled mackerel, grilled unigi, paired with a big glass of sapporo... or three. Friendly Japanese waitresses provide top-notch service. Add this to your must-go if you love all things Japan. 10/10
Be the first to ReplyIntimate, cozy, delightful, my favorite izakaya spot in SD.
We walked over at 9pm and waited about 5 minutes for a seat at the bar. This is a no frills kind of place imo, but so worth it. I know exactly what I will order every time I come in. We always start with takowasa, Masa's fried chicken, and chukka karage. I usually get some type of sushi rolls, takoyaki, and depending on how hungry we are we add on from there.
Be the first to ReplyNestled in the heart of Mission Hills, Izakaya Masa is one
Nestled in the heart of Mission Hills, Izakaya Masa is one of the go-to sushi spots in the area. Stepping inside, you're immediately embraced by its authentic and lively atmosphere, which beautifully showcases Japanese culture. What truly sets this place apart, though, is the warm and attentive staff who go above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience. From their genuine smiles to their helpful recommendations, they truly make you feel like part of the family. And let's talk about the food - it's nothing short of amazing. Each dish is bursting with flavor and expertly crafted, leaving your taste buds craving more. However, I must warn you, this place gets busy, especially during peak hours. My partner and I learned this the hard way, waiting in line for what felt like an eternity. But let me tell you, every minute was worth it once we dug into our meal. Despite the slight inconvenience, the ambiance and delicious food more than make up for it. So, if you're looking for a culinary adventure that's both authentic and unforgettable, Izakaya Masa is the place to be.
Be the first to ReplyReal solid authentic Japanese food.
I've always liked coming to this spot not only for the atmosphere of being in an Izakaya with friends & loved ones, but also for their delicious food. I had some Takoyaki (Fried balls with sauce and octopus on the inside), Shoyu Ramen and Hakata ramen. The takoyaki is a fantastic Japanese street food dish and it always hits the spot at this place. The Shoyu ramen provides a savory, more umami flavor that features spinach in the broth. Get the Hakata ramen if you like a "brighter" but deeper flavor due to their garnish which might be bitter for some. Service is great here, and all the staff are incredibly friendly and work to make you feel most welcome. Great place, and I will definitely continue being a regular here.

I ordered the saba and it reminded me of the grilled fish i would have for breakfast in the early mornings of Japan. Grilled to perfection where you can pick at the fattest parts or start of with the crunchy in of the tail. Dont forget to utilize the lemon !

Bad bad bad! Horrible service! The unbelievable happened when visiting the restaurant. All the food came out.. (something they charge an arm and a leg for something I can make for 1/2 the price) and at the end, the waiter offered mochi ice cream. I did not order so thought it was FREE OF CHARGE but immediately after I was finished eating, he came and said "I am so sorry it's my mistake but I need you to pay.. my manager told me to come tell you." I asked to speak to the manager but she hesitated to come and insisted for me to pay; because it was consumed?! I have never experienced something so crazy like this! Not so Japanese and disappointed. Not worth your time. Stop waiting.. look around you. No Jpns cares too go because of their food and especially SERVICE!
Be the first to ReplyFood was authentic and decent quality.
However at the end our server brought us a small desert with 2 mochi. It was pretty small that the thought it was on the house. So we tried it. However a little later he came back and said he served it to us by accident. But because we ate it he asked us to pay for it. First it was your mistake. But you want us to pay for your mistake? Never experienced such poor customer service.
Be the first to ReplyTrue Izakaya atmosphere and food.
Ankimo was very good. I wish it had more Izakaya style food but it's good enough. Staff was friendly and also geso yaki was very good.
Be the first to Reply2/13/24- first time here and I will go here again.
The best Ramen soup we have had. I went with a party of 4. Highlight, they actually have jellyfish to eat! My favorite. I haven't seen it since SF, you must try it as an appetizer. Also, the black bean Tofu was excellent. We ordered both ramen dishes. Food was delivered fast and the place was packed. Highly recommend this place. Check out the photos.

Affordable and delicious. This was a random find, but very worth the trial.

I had low expectations of this place but the food was pretty good. They didn't over-do the rice on each roll, good amount of fish is on each roll, and quality is also quite good for the price! Staff is very nice. They don't take reservations. I removed one star mainly because they charged me $1 for a small cup of hot water! Who does that?? I found it so weird and also they didn't tell me until I got the bill. Go for the food, but beware of weird charges and ask before you buy I guess.

If you don't know what to order let me tell you what's the absolute best here from sushi:Start with Tuna carpaccio Salmon nigiriAlbacore nigiri Then move on toSan Diego Dream rollAlbacore avocado roll To finish off get Green tea ice cream with warm spring rollsYou'll be in heaven with every bite. I promise.
Be the first to ReplyWe waited about 45 minutes to get seated on a Friday night.
It's small inside, so there's not a whole lot of seating. We started off with edamame which was fine, but I was disappointed that they didn't have garlic or spicy. The sushi was all really good and high quality, but the chicken teriyaki was not great. Too sweet and the chicken was slightly rubbery. I recommend the San Diego Dream roll! The service was fast and they have Sapporo on draft which is a must. Definitely would come back, but probably just for sushi. Maybe try their noodle dishes next time.
Be the first to ReplyThis was by far the worst experience i had in a restaurant
This was by far the worst experience i had in a restaurant ever. The food was disgusting almost impossible to eat. But my friends and I still ate the appetizers. The rolls came out and the fish was old and dirty. It was literally inedible. I asked the lady very very politely. To send it back and the reason why. She started insulting me say "have you ever eaten sushi before." And "this is not right to do" etc. they said they are not going to take it off the bill and that we have to pay for it no matter what. Being very very disrespectful and having the rudest attitude. We basically were tired of arguing and just asked for the bill so we can leave. I have absolutely no idea how this place is still in business after maybe the worst food I ever had in my life. And for sure the worst service I have ever had. Never again will I go back and I will never recommend this place too anyone.
Be the first to ReplyI've never been treated this poorly it was honestly
I've never been treated this poorly it was honestly appalling. The food at this establishment was on the border of not being edible but what can you do after a round of appetizers that were borderline putrid we had hoped that the sushi which is what there known for would be the save and grace of the meal, we were wrong. After trying one piece from each roll we requested to talk to someone and we were being civil the sushi was old and not safe to eat we tried to reason with them and even asked them to try it which they refused to do they started insulting us and refused to work anything out then they ran up the bill with things we didn't even order and acted like nothing happened. If your looking for a nice outing in San Diego avoid this place like the plague.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible.
Not just the food but the service itself was the worst i've encountered. We ordered almost every appetizer on the menu and not a single thing was edible but we sucked it up and said it's a sushi restaurant the sushi must be good? Wrong the sushi was putrid and at this point we were over it. Never once have we tried to send food back but this was bad. We asked her if we can send it back and she said "you've never had sushi before" and that she wasn't gonna send it back. Not only did they not send it back, as soon as we got the bill they added things on it that we never received. Do not recommend
Be the first to ReplyWent on a Friday night around 6:00.
For a party of 4, the wait was already 45 minutes. We put our name on the list, and went to another spot for a drink while we waited. I wish there was a place at Izakaya Masa to get a drink while waiting, but their small space just doesn't allow for it. The bad thing is, they don't take your phone number or give you a pager, so if you miss your name being called, they move to the next party. We got lucky, and when we returned, there were 3 or 4 parties of the same size ahead of us. As they called them, some weren't there. We only had to wait maybe 5 minutes upon return. Once seated, we were greeted quickly and ordered drinks. I tried the Otokoyama sake, which is their own brand. I am not a sake connoisseur, but I thought it was good. My husband and I ordered several dishes to share, and our friends did the same. Items just come out when they are ready. The gyoza and tuna carpaccio came out first. The gyoza had a nice crisp to the outside, and the filling was flavorful. The tuna was delicious. It is definitely garlic heavy, but I loved it. Tuna was fresh and tender. Next came our rolls. We got the spicy tuna and San Diego Dream. Both were really good, and I loved that they were more centered on the fish and not covered in heavy sauces. We decided we had a little more room after and ordered one more - the spicy yellowtail, which was delicious as well. The five plates were the perfect amount for the 2 of us.I would not say they focus on servers being overly involved in your dinner, but they are friendly and fast. With it being so busy, and not many tables, they want to keep things moving. I thought the food was great though, and I look forward to going back to try some other items!
Be the first to ReplyBeen wanting to come here for ages , finally made it
Been wanting to come here for ages , finally made it yesterday got to restaurant at 5:10 they open at 5:30. Put out name on the waiting list which is put out in front of restaurant at 5-ish, got right in at first wave of customers . Ordered Tuna Carpaccio and Cherry Blossom Roll both done well Tuna Had Crunchy Garlic on top which I love. Blossom Roll Was On point !! My Nephew had the Hakata Ramen Both was nice not as over the top rich like some I've tasted , nice aromatics flavor mixed in , noodles not as good as some shop but weren't bad by any stretch. Finished up with Gyoza , Karragรฉ and Sashimi . Gyoza delicate wrappers which I loved not over stuffed fillings very Nice , Karragรจ lightly battered not greasy at all loved it !!! Sashimi all very fresh cut thicker which I usually don't like but in this case was delicious !!! Ended with pineapple sorbet was prefect sweet acidic and not too much in one direction .. all in all top notch for a straight forward Japanese Style Cafe .. Parking a little challenging but A Little walk is nice for the appetite !!!! Will be back for certain !! Oh and service on point High turn over so they hustle !!!!
Be the first to ReplyGiving this a full 5/5 FOR ME.
Here's why:Food: Some of the lightest and refreshing ramen/ingredients I've had. The tuna Carpaccio was was very light, even as it's in oil, and had fried garlic pieces on it for extra umami. A very light appetizer, and well flavored. We also had the San Diego Roll which was surprisingly fresh and not too heavy as an appetizer. The rice was perfectly cooked and the fish was well cut. The ramen! Wow. Honestly, some of the lightest and well flavored ramen I've ever had. It's different than the others I've had because usually they're quite heavy in broth and ingredients. With this, I could finish the whole bowl which is uncommon for me. Priced at $13 a bowl, I would say it's extremely reasonable and I will absolutely be coming back. Price: We paid $73 for a roll, an appetizer, 2 ramens a ramune (drink) and tip. Ramen is $13 a bowl which is just awesome in my opinion. There is no sacrifice for the quality and the price point. :) Ambiance: Just right. Food came out very quick. Good vibes and not too many tables at all. The kitchen isn't in customer view so it was calm and classic. Service: Also amazing. Server was very attentive, sweet, and food was quick. Everyone was helpful. Huge TIP: They open at 5:30 and put a waitlist down around 5(?). Put your name down then and wait the 30 mins in your car, you'll get in right away (most likely!)

This place is so good love the ramen and sushi, it's a bit small so can be a pain waiting in line to get in because it fills up fast
Be the first to ReplyReally good takoyaki and sushi rolls.
But on the pricier side but the service is really good and attentive.

Popped by on a Friday evening and it was so busy with 8 parties ahead of us that we left. Came back next day super early before they opened and was the first ones on the list and the first to get seated. However, we didn't even get to take our order first or even get served any water. Only until we waved a waitress down did she come by to take our food and drink order. It took sometime for the food to come out but my favorites for the tuna carpaccio, agedashi tofu, and the gyudon. The calamari was just okay to me not something worth trying here. We also ordered the kama which was just okay to me too and it took sometime to come out, the waitress even warned us too but lacked flavor. I wish I could have tried the ramen but was too full already. Also it's super loud in there, not the establishments fault but there was a birthday party in the private room and they were screaming and laughing their heads off, it ruined our dinner.
