Great and affordable spot! We got the half and half black & red and also the beef and pork. I liked the beef and pork the best. I would reccomend for a casual dinner.

Just a short walk from Shijo Karasuma! This is a European curry restaurant with mostly counter seating. Today's dish is the root vegetable keema curry. It looked delicious, so I ordered it without hesitation. The crunchy root vegetables go perfectly with the keema! The black curry was sweet and rich, and the chunks of beef were very tender and delicious. We went a little early, but it filled up quickly. It's a popular restaurant, so if you go a little later, you should be able to get in quickly!

Keema curry is neatly laid out on top of a dome-shaped bowl of rice. The roux is semi-dry but still moist, and the minced pork is combined with onion and lotus root to give it a slightly chewy texture. The mellow texture and the spiciness that slowly builds up is irresistible. I tried topping it with a raw egg to change up the flavor halfway through. The location is great, and it's a restaurant I'd like to visit again.

This was one, new place we wanted to try this trip to Kyoto and we were not disappointed. Each bowl of curry was made to order with us enjoying the chicken curries. We got the smaller portion and had more than enough food. Due to the size of the restaurant and limited seating, we were glad that we got there when it opened as there was a line when we left. Definitely would go there again. Convenient to Shijo and Karasuma and the items on the menu are reasonably priced. I personally liked that they let me pour my own ginger ale into the class. :)

We found this place by walking past and stopping to see where the delicious smell was coming from. We had the half & half beef/chicken and the keema. Both were great. Heartland Beer was good too! Only a small place, we waited about 10 minutes to be seated. Well worth it!

I am not sure it is fare to give 2on the review. I went there last night 5/3/2023. According to google website they are open at 6pm. When we get there they were closed from 5/3-5/7. They don’t have their own website or phone number.
Be the first to ReplyBest Japanese curry for a dinner in Kyoto
I went for dinner in solo, exploring the city. Thanks to the previous very positive reviews I moved towards Kara-Kusa. The pretty appearance of a concise and private space hides a great Japanese curry. Only few seats are available, but as soon as one steps in, the welcoming staff invites to seat and to take a look at the menu. The offer is compact, consisting of 6 variations of rice and curry. I opted for the half and half, namely half red chicken curry and half black beef curry, with medium portion of rice. The waiting was short and accompanied by soft piano music. The portion was perfect. The two curries differ yet they both excel. Probably the best Japanese curry I have ever had. The exquisite main was served with pickled lotus root that counterbalanced the spiciness of the curry. The experience was very enjoyable, recommended for small groups (due to the limited seats), couples but also for a solo dinner. Home-like environment, affordable yet really tasty curry. Great experience :)

Saw this place on trip advisor, a tiny restaurant, so tiny we walked passed it only stopping when we smelt the curry, it sits only 8 people and serves only 6 types of curry meals Both of our meals were great , lovely guys behind the counter, highly recommend it

As recommended by trip advisor, I got the half and half chicken and beef curry. Was really craving some nice spice but nothing too hot, and this was delicious. Lovely atmosphere and a great place to spend an evening!

Craving Japanese curry, my daughter selected this restaurant as we were shopping in the Nishiki market area. We were lucky to get seats as the restaurant is small(9 seats). The curry is unique and delicious! We had the Red & Black curry which was excellent with very tender meats and tasty curry sauce. My wife had the Butter chicken curry as she does not like things spicy. She said it, too, was tasty. Also try the pickled daikon and hasu(lotus root) which compliments the curries well. We congratulated our daughter on her superb find.

If you are in the area and looking for Japanese curry then this place is perfect. A small local restaurant that sits around eight people. The staff are very friendly and can assist in English. The menu is small, but they have perfected what they do. I ordered their half red half black curry. The red is chicken, the black is beef. Both were absolutely wonderful. The beef in particular was a joy. I can’t recommend this place highly enough. It would be top if my list of eateries to return to in Kyoto.

We were in the mood for a Japanese curry and found this place on Tripadvisor. Best choice we made. From the second we walked in we were looked after, simple menu and cosy atmosphere. Had the half and half curry and it was so delicious - would recommend without hesitation for the food, service & atmosphere. Incredible value for money too

Intentionally came to seek out an excellent curry and boy, did we ever! I had the two-two: red chicken curry & black beef curry whilst hubby had the Keeman lamb curry. Hands-down, the best Japanese curry we've both ever had. Would totally return for another meal if we were staying in the vicinity!
