Warm welcome; excellent food
This unassuming Uptown storefront hides a regional Mexican food gem.
We made a reservation for a mid-week dinner. When we arrived a little before 7pm, we were only the second party in the place, though others trickled in after us until it was almost full. We were given a warm welcome and menus, including a page with the week's specials. Since we'd studied it online beforehand, we quizzed the waiter about his favorite dishes.
We first ordered a couple agua frescas which came in big Mason jar mugs. It's BYOB, so we spiked them with some rum we'd brought. Everyone else we noticed had brought bottles of wine or beer.
The waiter brought house made chips and a small dish of warm bean dip to munch while we waited, which was not long after we ordered.
Everything on the menu seemed so appealing, we had a hard time deciding. We began with a beet and apple salad which we shared. Then I had a Oaxacan tamale filled with shredded pork in a mild green mole sauce while my companion had warm mushrooms cooked in a plantain leaf. These appetizers were followed by a main dish of 2 juicy grilled quail in plum sauce with rice and refried beans for me and seafood soup for him. I was stuffed by this time but he made room for a small dessert of vanilla flan; it was very firm, almost like cheesecake, with a dark, burnt-sugar sauce (a smidge too dark for my taste)
Everything was made with care and quality ingredients, well seasoned, and attractively plated. We were very pleased with our choices and impressed with this little place. All that food, with tax, came out to $100 before tip.
The restaurant space is attractively decorated in a homey way. The tables are well-spaced apart. Service is friendly and competent. Street parking was plentiful and the Sheridan bus runs right past the place, so it's not hard to get there. In warmer months, there's a small patio out front on the wide sidewalk.
Very impressive! I'm so glad I learned about this place. We'll be back.
The Tamale pollo con mole
The Tamale pollo con mole rojo is truly one of the best tamales I’ve had in the US. It is authentic, unbelievably tasty and cooked to perfection as if I was in Oaxaca

Totally authentic oaxacan cuisine. Few if any like it in chicago. The tlayuda is fantastic. The tamales are unique, different texture than what you are used to but delicious. Their moles are singular!! The best I have had. The bean dip instead of salsa with chips is wonderful go here you wont be sorry.

Fabulous food, excellent service, waiters really friendly and thought about what we wanted before we knew we wanted it. I have eaten lots of Mexican food, this has to be the best in the city! Vegetarian tacos fabulous! Well worth a visit!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Oaxacan Food
The food here is excellent and is different from most Mexican restaurants in the city. The Oaxacan menu offers items not found in you typical taqueria and is some of the most flavorful food I have eaten. The staff is very attentive and provide great service. A great place for a date night or a group of friends. Prices are reasonable considering the quality of the food and the restaurant is BYO. I have been many times and plan on going many moe.

Kie Gol Lanee is in neighborhood where my son lives, near where we usually go for good Viernamese. I had read about it, and we were excited to check it out. So glad we did.
Walked over, were promptly seated (we had called for reservations), and greeted by friendly staff. BYOB a plus!
Chips and a mole sauce on table, nice touch. Started off with a garnacha (masa patty with pork and a good red sauce), 2 tamales (1 chicken, 1 pork), and some yummy guacamole to start. Our entrees (we shared everything between the 4 of us): grilled quail, stewed rabbit, tostadas de ceviche, and a special that night, jabali wild boar. Such great flavors!! Nicely garnished, rice, vegetables and nopales, great sauces. Wonderful! Finished our meal with coffee and dessert, flan and a wonderful tres leches cake. Delicious food. We will definitely return!
It was drlicious
I’m not from Oaxaca or even Mexico, so I cannot say how authentic Oaxacan it was or not.
However, I like food and this one me liky a lot
I had the tortilla soup, and the stuffed acorn squash; they were both delicious and the mole sauce on top of the squash was fantastic
I discover that Oaxacans are the only people in Mexico who eat black beans instead of pinto beans.
The service was very good and extremely friendly and the food was muy deliciosa
Great place to try Food from Oaxaca
We decided to try this restaurant and it was delightful! My husband tried the grasshoppers and was intrigued. The main meal and dessert were delicious. The waitress was very helpful with our questions. We tried foods that were different and will definitely try again.

This is a coy neighborhood restaurant that serves food from Oaxaca which is not your typical Mexican food. The two chefs take their work seriously and the staff is very friendly. Prices are reasonabe and as you can bring your own drinks, the price is even better. They are happy to serve a mix with your tequila. As one of my favorite Latin American cities is Oaxaca, I was pleased to be served authentic dishes from the region which are some of the finest in Mexico.
Be the first to ReplyA hidden gem! Authentic Oaxacan specialties.
We have visited Oaxaca, and were excited to spot this little restaurant while riding the bus down Sheridan. So we came back for dinner, and were certainly not disappointed! The menu is not large but what they offer is very special, and we were pleased with everything we ordered. Best known is probably the tlayuda - a plate-sized tender-crisp tortilla topped with beans and other goodies. I was thrilled to see both huitlacoche (translated as corn truffle) and chapulines (fried, seasoned grasshoppers) on the menu and enjoyed them also. The tamale was steamed in a fresh banana leaf, giving it a marvelous green color and flavor. This is the real Mexican food that Rick Bayless "discovered" and built his fame upon. But eat here, it's the original. My one suggestion would be to read the menu carefully, and realize that the items on the left side of the page are really appetizer size, and the "fuertes" on the right are dinner size (you can sort of tell by the price). My huitlacoche quesadilla was not enough for a meal, but my companion's tlayuda was more than she could eat. We were delighted to learn that the name of the restaurant is the village in Oaxaca that was home to the owners of the restaurant, and that it is Zapotec for "old stone."
