Petty rules, akin to those found at a primary school
WARNING: This establishment does not allow you to take out your laptop. I received a message that needed attending to for work after we had sat down and ordered drinks. I was rudely told by the staff to put my laptop away - even after explaining that I just had to attend to something quickly for work. This is not a fine dining establishment, but rather a cafe with a relaxed atmosphere and wooden bench tables in a garden. The owner is clearly under some delusion that they get to dictate which personal electronic device can be used in their establishment, as though theyโre a triple Michelin star restaurant or something. This policy also screams of Ageism, where they pander to their target clientele of retirees and pensioners at the expense of younger clientele with jobs that require their attention. As for the food, the menu looks mediocre, typical for a mid-range cafe (although we didnโt end up eating - we paid our bill for the drinks and left). As for the drinks, the double espresso I ordered arrived as a watered-down short Americano - so they didnโt get that right either. I recommend saving the entrance fee at the gate to the Gardens and going somewhere to eat that has actually made it into the 21st century.
Be the first to ReplyTea and Scones were had.
We had tea and scones which were good. Day was windy and cool and we were not prepared for the weather to sit outdoors. Limited seating indoors. a lovely busy spot. The tea room is both a destination as well as a stop for people doing walks through Kirstenbosch. A variety of food and drinks available.
Be the first to ReplyThe place to eat at Kirstenbosch
Lovely varied menu at reasonable prices. Charming waitress albeit a bit slow. At almost any time of day you can have breakfast, tea or a main course. Very good choice. I recommend the bangers. Donโt bother with Moyo, the fancier Kirstenbosch restaurant. They tell you they are full when you can see dozens of empty tables. It seems they donโt want walk in business and they are stubborn with it.
Be the first to ReplyThe amount of food versus the cost was not value for money for the Poached pear salad.
My sister and a friend had large plates of food and were very satisfied with the quality and quantity. I had the Poached pear, roast beetroot, blue cheese and walnut salad which costs R180.00. The ingredients were very small amounts which left me still hungry afterwards. I feel this was definitely not value for money. The staff are very friendly and helpful and apart from my small salad it was a good visit.

Nice place to stop for a drink after wandering round the gardens. Good views. Table service. Would recommend for a break.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent meal at Kirstenbosch
Excellent menu. Breakfast & Lunch. Cater for all different tastes. Well presented. Beautiful setting. Staff very helpful and friendly.

Vibe like a urologist's waiting room. Grumpy staff. Most expensive coffee in town. Not an ideal combination.
Be the first to ReplyWide menu choice
We were pleasantly surprised at the wide range of food on offer as well as the quality. There is plenty to choose from, including good choices for vegans and vegetarians. My husband and I both had different salads and they were probably the best we had ever had. Staff were very friendly too. Definitely recommend eating here when spending time at the gardens.
Be the first to ReplyA must when at Kirstenbosch.
This is a must when you are at Kirstenbosch gardens. Visited twice in Feb. Having different dishes. The salads are large and the best Iโve had in Cape Town including at fancy places. Toasted sandwiches were great on another occasion. The service is good and attentive well deserving of a good tip. Donโt forget they close at 4pm and saw disappointeds who left it too late.

Have visited twice this week. Interesting well priced menu, excellent presentation and attentive service. Loved the ginger beer !
Be the first to ReplyNo Tea But Good Sarnie
74 hours of tramping round the beautiful gardens and we were bushed. Ok, it was two if you were wondering... but even after just two hours of the baking hot sun, sustenance was needed. In to view like a shining oasis in a sea of green, the KTRR. No tea for us, but a tasty sandwich washed down with a cheeky Castle served by lovely staff with not a scone in sight. Good value and the National Trust could learn here on how to do it. Good effort. Do go.
Be the first to ReplyGood food albeit a bit expensive
Lovely setting and good food. A little expensive, but quality ingredients were definitely used. Although the place was very busy we did not get the feeling that we were being rushed.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced, poor experience, disinterested management.
After a lovely walk in the gardens, we stopped at Fynkos near the top gate to enjoy a coffee. I was thrilled to find that they offer Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk, the only brand that suits me. My decaf almond latte (double shot) arrived without even a suggestion of froth ontop, dead flat, it could not by any stretch of the imagination be considered to be a latte. I can't imagine why they failed to produce what I ordered, as I drink 14 to 21 lattes a week made with exactly this milk, and this was the first time it's ever presented as a complete failure. I was given no explanation. When the bill arrived I was flabbergasted to be charged R58 for my disastrous latte. Had it been a perfect latte, I would have thought it grossly overpriced, but under the circumstances I thought it daylight robbery. The breakdown was R38 for a latte (which wasn't one), R15 surcharge for the almond milk ontop of the price already charged for the milk, and R6 for the extra shot of coffee. This was, without any exception, the most expensive latte I've ever paid for, and the biggest failure. I asked to speak to the manager and was told she was in a meeting but that they'd call her. She didn't arrive, but a very sour-faced man showed up who didn't introduce himself. I explained what had happened, and he simply said sorry, turned, and walked away. That was it. I'm appalled by the barista's complete lack of skill, especially considering they were using their own choice of almond milk, delivering a complete failure. I'm appalled by the price tag of an almond latte, especially their almond milk surcharge which is nearly double what is charged elsewhere. Most of all I'm utterly appalled by the person who arrived as 'manager' and his complete lack of interest in the problem. I cannot think that a person with his attitude and complete disdain for my complaint could be an asset to any restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyVery bad and very good
Best glutin free muffins ever. Straight out the oven and delicious. Allowed us to split the order one glutin free one normal Worst tea presentation ever. Tea served in outsized mug with lid. Nowhere to put tea bag. Very off putting Unacceptable in an expensive tearoom like that or actually anywhere.. I like my tea in a cup.

Be very very careful if ordering the Gluten Free version of anything on the menu. We explicitly told the waiter that we have severe allergies in our family - he assured us that they cater for gluten free diets. The bread my daughter ordered was supose to be Gluten Free - after she consumed half of her sandwich I saw that it was whole wheat and not Gluten Free. My husband ordered steak and vegetables - requested no basting, no sauce with wheat and stretching that he also is very allergic to gluten - the steak showed up and the veggies was fried in soya sauce. Please give your waiters training in food allergies and don't advertise any gluten free options on a menu if your employees has no idea what ends up on the plates...
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing to see where it goes with the Picnic...
Having a picnic 3-4 times every year at Kirstenbosch's Tea Room it's very disappointing to see how the portion is slowly getting smaller and smaller and the price quickly going up and up. Started with a HUGE and ABSOLUTELY AMAZING picnic for less than R200 we are now at a still nice but only average sizing porting for R305. So what do we do? Ordering one instead of two, spending 305 instead of almost 400 in the past, everyone looses. The guest because he is getting only one instead of 2 picnics and the restaurant because it makes less turnover. If you move on like this, we will bring our own picnic as 99% of all Kirstenbosch guests do already. Think about it...

Visited at lunchtime and our sandwiches were delivered fast and were very tasty. Staff all friendly and provided good service throughout. Ginger beer especially good!
Be the first to ReplyLovely Calm Atmosphere
If you want the most amazing, rich hot chocolate then this is the place to go. The hot cholates and home made lemonade were delicious. We have mixed reviews about the food. My scones were lovely, fresh and tasty. The cream & jam matched it perfectly. My younger son enjoyed his burger patty but not the chips. My other son enjoyed his apple pie, however the portion was huge so he could not finish it. The gluten free sandwich was not a favourite, the bread was not tasty & a bit bland. There wasn't much for my husband to choose from due to his allergies. It was very busy and atmosphere lovely. The birds roaming around adds to the calming atmosphere.

Yesterday we had lunch here. Because of celiac disease i have to eat gluten free. That was absolutely no problem. We ordered Shashuka with gluten free bread and two gluten free muffins (cranberry and cinnamon with grated cheese and jam). I also had the homemade strawberry lemonade which tasted really naturally, not synthetically at all. We cab highly recommand this bistro.
Be the first to ReplyOkay lunch with a great view
The Fynkos tea room boasts a spectacular mountain view and a delightfully shady area in which to take afternoon tea or a light lunch. The menu is on the pricier side, the baked cheesecake rather bland and the service extremely inattentive. Perhaps it would be wiser to enjoy a drink here midway through one's visit to Kirstenbosch before moving on to one of the myriad excellent Southern Suburbs restaurants for a meal later on.

We ordered our picnic option from the Tea Room and we were amazed at the value for money. The option had so much variety and the food was delicious. Well Done
Be the first to ReplySorry! Horrid food
Horrid food - really awful. Poorly presented - just slapped onto the plate. Toasted sandwish was soggy, Omelette was heavy and flavourless . Chips were edible, coffee was fine. Service was fine. Prices are very expensive in relation to the quality and taste. Cannot recommend.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic picnic menu
We pre-ordered the picnic baskets for a picnic in the botanical gardens. It was ready for collection as specified and absolutely delightful!
Be the first to ReplyKirstenbosch garden with view
The lunch was of high standard and a big variety. We had a lovely salad and tasted sandwich with fresh juice and coffee. But the menu is extensive with alot of choices-and big portions. All day limited breakfast and liquor is served The garden is a must to explore and spend time taking in the beautiful views. Even if the weather is cool it has a fresh ambience.
Be the first to ReplyStopped For Ice Cream Only and It was a Pleasure!
โฆ.Once you enter at gate # 2 just a little way ahead you will encounter this very huge restaurant that offers seatings inside and outside under large green umbrellas both in-front and at the back which is more under tree cover. You have to wait to be seated. The inside has a nice large long bar counter with a full-lii stocked bar but your drinks are served at your tables but now with level 3 implementation No alcohol is served. One thing that is very catch-ii is the food sign which says โFynkosโ one will almost think that the restaurants name is Fynkos as the umbrellas also advertise this but its only the food brand name, so very snazz-zii. All the staff wears mask all the time and at the entrance they spray your hands with sanitiser and the policy here is No Mask! No Entree! The staff on duty were friend-lii and the displayed pleasure in being of service to the patrons. Although we did not seat down to enjoy a meal we could notice that the place in-front and at the back was full and everyone were deep-lii engrossed in what ever they had ordered and were having a great time indulging. We only popped-in to purchase ice creams to have on our way on this splendored sunny summers afternoon walking to Rhodes Memorial. The flavours were delicious and very enjoyable and it cooled us off nice-lii. We tried the passion-fruit and the pistachio flavours but they had many more flavours to choose from. Here they serve breakfast, lunch and loads of niceties like cakes, pastries different refreshments etc, etc. If you donโt pack a picnic-basket at home you can purchase one right here too, so convenient and trouble-free. This is a must visit venue when visiting the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
