Kissa Tanto Vancouver Reviews from The Last Year
Kissa Tanto was highly raved about by a friend so when I
Kissa Tanto was highly raved about by a friend so when I was coming to town I had to make sure this was the first spot I made a reservation for. It's a little unassuming trying to find the place as you have to walk upstairs and enter this cute space that reminds me of a greenhouse with a classic bar in the middle of the space. Had a fantastic time for our tasting menu! I liked that they tailor the menu based on the price range per person so they adjust some of the ingredients to fit within your budget. We came as a group but had a friend come in solo and honestly it might be better to go solo or with two people because I think you get to enjoy the larger portions where you need to split them a little more the larger your group is. We ended up going under $200/pp | WHAT WE GOT | - Pickled app with fried olives with meat stuffing - Uni custard - still think about this - Cured fish - Wagyu - Truffle omelette - one of my favorites - Pasta (ugh can't remember exactly the ingredients but enjoyed this one a lot) - Squid ink pasta - Whole fried fish - Pork loin - Chinese broccoli - Canoli type of dessert with matcha and hazelnut filling Overall, each dish was unique and had a nice twist to some classic options. The ingredients were fresh and all flavors melded well with each other. There were definitely some clear winners of the night but I don't think there was anything we didn't like. Our server was great and even gave some recs for some speakeasies nearby. Thanks!
My all time fav restaurant in Vancouver!! Of all time
My all time fav restaurant in Vancouver!! Of all time ! The cocktails..10/10 The food is unforgettable. The service is Michelin. Try: the snake river steak tartare, the tajarin, the stuffed olives. The udon with snow crab and prawns. I dream about their pastas. You will too!
Wow oh WOW! Ate here for an early Valentine's Day dinner
Wow oh WOW! Ate here for an early Valentine's Day dinner and boy were we amazed. First of all, service was amazing, our server was very informative, explained all the dishes for us and gave us recommendations. The food was insanely delicious, flavours that I haven't tasted before. The charcoal noodles and pork were my favorite. The restaurant opens late and is busy (for good reason). The decor is dim and provides a nice intimate setting. I will be back here for sure to try other items on the menu!
The service was exceptional, the prices were good as well.
The place is a little small but pretty comfy. It had a dark room lighting so not ideal for pics haha the food was great! The pasta options were very good, and the fish was great as well. Overall I'd come back here again!
Experience ruined by surly server Chloe
Food was very good. However, the dining experience was ruined by our surly and curt server Chloe who began by rather loudly carding my son when he ordered a cocktail and demanded, not one, but two pieces of ID from him to cross reference. Never had a request for TWO pieces of ID before (and also in such an indiscrete and militant way) in a nice restaurant, especially as my son is mature looking. We ordered a lot of food and two bottles of wine (Chloe tried at first to recommend the wines instead of directing the sommelier to us). Chloe was very, very slow in bringing house made hot sauce to the table to enjoy with our several dishes of pasta and we had to ask a couple of times. Eventually we had to eat the pasta without as it came too late; very very slow to bring sugar for espresso so that by the time she brought it, espresso was stone cold, she was too busy chatting it up with other staff and regulars. My husband was still polite and gave an 18% tip (although my son and I had told him that she should get much less). We spent over $1500 there and will never return because of her.
The food was just "ok" for the prices charged.
The only dish that was relatively tasty was the carne cruda. Everything else we ordered (Tonno Mantecato, charcoal udon, magnet duck breast, lemon dessert (Costco pound cake was more moist)) was just okay. The location of the restaurant was not in the best part of town (especially at night when all the shops were closed).
Everything I ate was mediocre.
The Tobiko toast was interesting but overall the food wasn't great. Service and ambiance was fantastic.
Five stars all around!!! Incredible service, food and
Five stars all around!!! Incredible service, food and ambience. We got resos at the bar which was fun because we got to watch all the cocktails being made in front of us. Every bartender and server was very attentive and the vibe was really relaxed and not at all pretentious. We ordered the $155/head chefs tasting menu and wow was it so worth it! My husband is pescatarian and they made an absolutely delicious seven course menu for us. Every dish was outstanding, but one of my faves was the king crab omelette (so silky!!!) and the charcoal udon (omg!! So good). The presentation was also stunning and the ingredients used were so fresh. Oh also the starter oysters were prob the best oysters I've ever had!! The drinks were also a huge hit! We got two cocktails each to start then moved to wine. Everything was so perfect! The whole restaurant itself kind of feels like a joint you'd find tucked away in NYC. Love love love! Will be back!
Lost Charm and Inflexibility
I had been a regular at Kissa Tanto for years, drawn by its welcoming staff and inviting atmosphere. However, recent changes post-pandemic, particularly in management, have unfortunately diminished its former appeal. During my latest visit, I needed a slight alteration to my meal due to an allergy, specifically requesting that an ingredient be served on the side. The current GM, Justin Isidro, stated that such adjustments would not be entertained in the future as they diverge from the chef's vision for the dish. This rigid stance was a surprise, given that similar requests were previously met with understanding and adaptability. The new management style, now more akin to that of a mainstream chain like Cactus Club, lacks the unique charm that Kissa Tanto once had. Sadly, I don't see myself returning.

DH and I have spent years pondering Kissa Tanto (Key-Sa not Kiss-A, for the record) and for whatever reason the journey was always thwarted. This year we really wanted to branch out from our usual favorite which has never ever failed us everrrrrrr (we are Annalena hipsters... loved it before it was cool to!). When you're spending ~$550 on food and drink, you tend to compare it with other $550 dollar meals you're having and in Vancouver, I have experienced that a handful of times with varying degrees of success. The one that never fails is mentioned above. So... using that as the bar for a perfect meal, I offer you the following review. To enter KT, you climb up a flight of tiled stairs (don't bring granny here, I didn't see an elevator though perhaps there is one?) and as we were in the first seating of the night, we were in queue to get seated. It was handled efficiently. The lowered lights, plush benches, and generally cozy feel is warm and welcoming. The bar is beautiful, truly and we were very quickly greeted by a server. For so few tables, I will say that it's not the quietest spot - a few times we had a hard time hearing the food descriptions. That said, ambiance, 5 star. Our server was lovely and offered recommendations. We opted for omakase which is not on the website menu and I'm sure pricing varies. On our night, it was 155/person, served family style. We had two cocktails, some sake for the meal, and closed it off with a digestif. The expedited the timeline for us because we had a little one at home but I thought that was actually the correct pacing for the meal. I had a Japanese whiskey sour with yuzu, the husband had something that resembled a gimlet. Both cocktails were perfectly prepared. Mine had been shaken with the eggwhite to velvet and this was probably one of the best cocktails I've had outside of home in a long time. First Course: Fried olives with Yuzu - we both enjoyed them very much and I believe even people who aren't generally olive fans would enjoy. Second Course: Octopus Salad - the octopus was perfection, though I felt like there wasn't enough octopus compared to the piles of daikon. Still, a lovely salad, sauce was unreal. Third Course: Fish belly in a.. hmmm. I can't actually remember the butter sauce detail but the fish was cooked perfectly. I would argue, however, this was a portion for one. Fourth Course, the mother effing showstopper: An omelette bathing in a pecorino sauce, topped with a generous helping of shaved alba truffle. Sex on a plate. This dish made my eyes well up with joy and will live in my top 10 things I have ever eaten ever. The omelette was unbelievable. I actually thought it might have been sousvided to get what can only be described as fluffy and dense simultaneously. Truly beautiful. Fifth Course: Duck agnolotti in a squash butter sauce. Richly flavoured, great texture. Lovely dish. Perhaps a little small for two people (there were 13 on the plate) Sixth Course: Duck Maget... was not my favourite. Somehow the duck was tough and I felt like it actually needed the mushrooms and sauce. I love duck, but this felt like it needed a couple components to shine - a starch, perhaps. Seventh Course: Raspberry Olive Oil Cake, Tea Ice Cream / Gelato... no complaints here. But Tara! Why only three stars? We left hungry. For 550 bucks, tip in, we should not leave hungry. We actually questioned whether only one meal was ordered. And while delicious, the positive recommendation did not match the meal. I feel like it's one of the rare times that it has happened in a restaurant of this quality and for that, I can't give it the full five.

This review is for reservation only! Made a reservation to celebrate the upcoming birthday over OpenTable but got canceled for no reasons nor explanation nor call beforehand. I tried to call back immediately but didn't get through. First time to experience this, especially from a Michelins Recognized restaurant. Shockingl Unbelievable!
Hey Kissa Tanto, cancelling an OpenTable confirmed birthday
Hey Kissa Tanto, cancelling an OpenTable confirmed birthday dinner reservation was unprofessional and disappointing.
Surprisingly good value for money
This was an imaginatively-thought out, fresh and delicious meal that was surprisingly good value for money. We have eaten at many Michelin-starred restaurants across Europe and it is apparent why this restaurant was awarded one. The approach to the dishes, flavour combinations, and cooking was complex, unexpected and very good. The staff were knowledgeable and professional. The experience was altogether excellent.
Exceptional food, shtty attitude from entitled server.
We just came back from having dinner at Kissa Tanto. First, the food was AMAZING. My girlfriend thought that it was probably the best restaurant where she ever ate. We ordered 3 cocktails, 2 entrees, 1 mid something, 2 mains, 1 dessert, and 2 glasses of wine. We received a stellar service from everyone during the whole evening. Our main server SIMON was very sweet with us the whole night. The bill came in at 310$ before taxes, and we tipped 50$ on top of it (16%+). After paying, my girlfriend asked for the receipt... SIMON printed it from the machine but the machine printed ANOTHER table's receipt (see photo). As soon as the receipt printed, SIMON looked at it to see how much we tipped him... That bill from another table being of a LOWER amount, the tip was lesser (33$) than what we really left him (50$). As soon as SIMON saw that 33$, his whole demeanor changed, and he just left saying absolutely anything and doing an angry kind of face. I am writing this review for you to understand that: 1) you printed the wrong receipt 2) we tipped you 16%+ 3) the table that tipped you 33$ was less than 15% of their bill (I hope you served them the same bad attitude than you served us) 4) even though we absolutely loved the food, you ruined our whole fkn night with you shtty attitude 5) even though we loved the food, we will steer everyone we know away from your restaurant. THANK YOU!!!
