Experience ruined by surly server Chloe
Food was very good. However, the dining experience was ruined by our surly and curt server Chloe who began by rather loudly carding my son when he ordered a cocktail and demanded, not one, but two pieces of ID from him to cross reference. Never had a request for TWO pieces of ID before (and also in such an indiscrete and militant way) in a nice restaurant, especially as my son is mature looking. We ordered a lot of food and two bottles of wine (Chloe tried at first to recommend the wines instead of directing the sommelier to us). Chloe was very, very slow in bringing house made hot sauce to the table to enjoy with our several dishes of pasta and we had to ask a couple of times. Eventually we had to eat the pasta without as it came too late; very very slow to bring sugar for espresso so that by the time she brought it, espresso was stone cold, she was too busy chatting it up with other staff and regulars. My husband was still polite and gave an 18% tip (although my son and I had told him that she should get much less). We spent over $1500 there and will never return because of her.
Be the first to ReplyLost Charm and Inflexibility
I had been a regular at Kissa Tanto for years, drawn by its welcoming staff and inviting atmosphere. However, recent changes post-pandemic, particularly in management, have unfortunately diminished its former appeal. During my latest visit, I needed a slight alteration to my meal due to an allergy, specifically requesting that an ingredient be served on the side. The current GM, Justin Isidro, stated that such adjustments would not be entertained in the future as they diverge from the chef's vision for the dish. This rigid stance was a surprise, given that similar requests were previously met with understanding and adaptability. The new management style, now more akin to that of a mainstream chain like Cactus Club, lacks the unique charm that Kissa Tanto once had. Sadly, I don't see myself returning.
Be the first to ReplySurprisingly good value for money
This was an imaginatively-thought out, fresh and delicious meal that was surprisingly good value for money. We have eaten at many Michelin-starred restaurants across Europe and it is apparent why this restaurant was awarded one. The approach to the dishes, flavour combinations, and cooking was complex, unexpected and very good. The staff were knowledgeable and professional. The experience was altogether excellent.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional food, shtty attitude from entitled server.
We just came back from having dinner at Kissa Tanto. First, the food was AMAZING. My girlfriend thought that it was probably the best restaurant where she ever ate. We ordered 3 cocktails, 2 entrees, 1 mid something, 2 mains, 1 dessert, and 2 glasses of wine. We received a stellar service from everyone during the whole evening. Our main server SIMON was very sweet with us the whole night. The bill came in at 310$ before taxes, and we tipped 50$ on top of it (16%+). After paying, my girlfriend asked for the receipt... SIMON printed it from the machine but the machine printed ANOTHER table's receipt (see photo). As soon as the receipt printed, SIMON looked at it to see how much we tipped him... That bill from another table being of a LOWER amount, the tip was lesser (33$) than what we really left him (50$). As soon as SIMON saw that 33$, his whole demeanor changed, and he just left saying absolutely anything and doing an angry kind of face. I am writing this review for you to understand that: 1) you printed the wrong receipt 2) we tipped you 16%+ 3) the table that tipped you 33$ was less than 15% of their bill (I hope you served them the same bad attitude than you served us) 4) even though we absolutely loved the food, you ruined our whole fkn night with you shtty attitude 5) even though we loved the food, we will steer everyone we know away from your restaurant. THANK YOU!!!

Went for the tasting menu. Great fun and imaginative courses. Wasn't so sure about an Italian/Japanese fusion but it worked. My (Italian) wife said the pasta we had was incredible so that's a definite compliment! Reasonable value for money I thought even though the UK £ is weak (thanks Brexit).
Be the first to ReplyOverhyped, Overpriced and Overthought
I’ll start my review by stating that I’m not a chef, so I don’t have the culinary skills to make dishes at this level, and I also would never consider myself a foodie with impeccable taste. Saying that, I do enjoy cooking and traveling, and as such, I try a lot of different foods and have an appreciation for all different types of food. This review is just my opinion Kissa Tanto rates up there as probably the most overrated restaurant I have ever been to, anywhere. The restaurant itself is pretty nice and I liked the decor. Myself and my 3 friends started with drinks, and the 3 of them got gin & tonics and I got a black lager. The G&T’s came and were completely uninspired. They genuinely looked like tall glasses of water with zero fizz to the tonic. I know, I know, it’s a gin & tonic, it’s not a cocktail, but they were just dull and bland, with a garnish that looked like a potato peel and a “trendy” long af ice cube that takes up the entire glass. For starters, we got 4 appetizers and the fried stuffed olives. The fish crudo was bland and just over powered by what seemed to be an endless supply of radishes. The fried smoked octopus was ok, but again, just hammered with too many radishes and endives. The wagyu tartar was pretty good, but it would have been better just on its own. It was covered in a mountain of Parmesan and Nashi pear, but it just all seemed pointless as none of the flavours came through. All of that was fantastic though, compared to the Tonno Montecato, which was basically smoked mashed potato with tuna mashed into it, covered in sushi seasoning. It made zero sense and was just a waste of time ordering. So far, we were far from impressed. As for mains, we got the sable fish, which was delicious, but a laughably small portion for the price, as well as the Tajarin, which was their “highly recommended” pasta that genuinely just tasted like Kraft dinner. We also got the charcoal udon which was interesting, but again, nothing fantastic and a pasta special, which had Japanese curry, pangratotto and a few other things, which just tasted like a rich pasta dish that was fairly bog standard. Other than the taste of the sable fish, it was all incredibly subpar. I understand that this is a fusion restaurant and I enjoy trying experimental dishes such as the ones served at Kissa Tanto, but none of the dishes worked…like, not at all. It just genuinely seemed like someone read a list of high end, hard to find ingredients and threw them all together thinking that, somehow, they would create a taste experience that would blow your mind, when really, they just created an entirely overpriced, over hyped menu that I truly can not fathom how it has made people rave about how excellent this place is, and I sure as hell have zero idea how Kissa Tanto received a Michelin Star. I would have been just as disappointed in anything I ate here had I ordered it at a White Spot. Eating such a disappointing meal and paying as much as we did (which is not even that much if the food was even remotely better) left a horrible taste in my mouth equaled only by the Tonno Montecato. Save your money and don’t waste your time. Genuinely the worst meal I’ve had since I went to Red Robin about 12 years ago.
Be the first to ReplyHow not to serve.
I don't usually leave reviews, but this one requires it. I recently visited Kissa Tanto with 5 friends for dinner. As you may know, the restaurant likes to keep groups small and so all their tables are 2-4 seaters. They do, however, have one big round table, which they say is meant for 6 people. This is not true. They do have one round table, but it does not fit 6. It's maybe a 5 seater, but for a restaurant at this price point, it should really be a 4 top. The 6 of us got to the table and instantly realised that this table was way too small and so requested the manager to add an extra chair for which there was plenty of space. This was strike 2 as it was a flat-out no. Not something you expect at a high-end establishment. A defining factor of a good fine dining experience is that customer requests are catered to, epically when your guests are visibly uncomfortable and unhappy about something. Not at Kissa Tanto. Not to say the staff was out right rude, but a good front-of-house team makes you feel welcome and important. This just wasn't the case. You could tell that the entire serving team at Kissa Tanto had a certain sense of arrogance. A good server understands the food and their guests. Servers at Kissa Tanto have just learned a script of ingredients for each menun item without understanding what any of it means. The next time you're there, ask your server anything about the food that they haven't already told you, like where it's sourced from or how it's made, and they will know nothing. The restaurant offers a chef's menu, which our server highly recommended we try. This menu is meant to be served family style similar to most of the dishes on the menu. However, this food is not family style friendly because of the way it is plated. Now there's nothing wrong with that and frankly the food was the one thing that was on point, but if intricately plated dishes are meant to be shared by the table, the restaurant should really have trained servers deconstructing the dish and plating it for each guest. Needless to say, this does not happen at Kissa Tanto. Coming to the food though, my regards to the chef. Not a single bad item on the menu, and every dish in the chef's tasting menu was better than the one before. Some very good food by Vancouver standards and Chef Watanabe's skill and finesse speaks through the food. The team in the kitchen knows what they're doing, and it shows. If it wasn't for the amazing food, this meal would probably have gone down as one of the more unpleasant dining experiences I've had in Vancouver. A dining experience is defined not just by the food but by everything you experience from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out. And it's disappointing that a restaurant serving a caliber of food set by Chef Watanabe has been paired with a front of house team that does not understand the assignment and if frankly just not up to the task of serving guests at a Michelin Star restaurant. With its new Michelin Star status, a thorough review of the front of house team is in order, and rigorous training is definitely required for the team. Hope they're able to elevate the serving staff to the level of the food soon, but it is safe to say that we will not be going back for another meal any time soon.
Be the first to ReplyPhenomenal flavors and service one of the best restaurants we have been to
Our waitress and all the staff was amazing, well versed, personable and the food was amazing. We ordered a la carte. All dishes were amazing. crudo, pasta with wagyu ragu, duck and truffle japanese omelet were unbelievable.
Be the first to Replyamazing food
We told our waiter to think of a nice menu and wow us. Well, he did! The price is steep, no doubt, but the food and amazing ambience made it worth it for us. The only slight negative note is that that when you give a waiter a card blanche i would not nessacerily serve wagyu. We know and have tried that many times before. It was amazing taste wise but i would have preferred to be amazed by weird combinations then a sure shot like wagyu. That said, we know what we were in for when giving the restaurant a free hand an had an absolute amazing evening! Do also visit the tapas bar next door to enjoy a starter cocktail. Quirky and amazing place!
Be the first to ReplyUnique Experience You Can't Find Anywhere Else in the World
I have been to Kissa Tanto many times and eaten almost all of the items on their menu. They are a very unique restaurant and in all my travels around the world, I have not seen another restaurant that provides this type of food. They serve Italian/Japanese fusion cuisine. What distinguishes this restaurant from other fusion restaurants is the simplicity of the dishes (in a good way). They use good ingredients and then Chef Watanabe gives them an artistic presentation. They always have a lot of specials so that is why I don't mind going back frequently...it is never the same meal. Some of my favourites on the regular menu are the Tonno Montecato and the Tajarin. But again they always have specials. Some of my favorite daily specials is the omelette with truffles and their chawan mushi topped with caviar. It is also one of the few restaurants that have Michelin quality service and attentiveness. I think we are more laid back in Vancouver and value friendliness over white glove service but this restaurant has both friendly and efficient service. Very unique restaurant that you won't find anywhere else in the world. It is right the in heart of Chinatown so you have that edgy/cool vibe. Definitely Michelin star worthy so I hope they get their star. For more information about this restaurant, see my review of this restaurant on my Youtube channel
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Culinary Experience
We decided to go with the "chef's tasting menu" which was the best decision we could have made. Every dish was amazing and left is wanting more. As an added bonus, the cocktails were incredible creations. Definitely worth searching this place out! If I could give six stars I would!!
Be the first to ReplyJapanese and Italian fusion food!
Great service with Christian, ambience and food but small portions. Located in Chinatown where its quiet and there are homeless people around. Arrived at 4:30 pm for a 5:30 pm reservation and couldn't find a place to go for a drink. Restaurant door was locked until 5:30 pm. Found an organic juice place about a block away...Kevin and Kevin but they closed at 5 pm. Lots of street parking available.
Be the first to ReplyMuch overrated
Greeting and service were excellent. The staff is very attentive and well trained. Prices, though are exorbitant, servings small, and wine & beer pricing is outrageous. Of the six dishes we shared, one was terrific, two were ok and one was poor - over seasoned, over cooked, far too salty. Music, mainstream jazz, is too loud. Food presentation is fair to poor. There are much better restaurants in Vancouver with far fairer pricing.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced and disappointing
I had a big expectation from visiting this place. But...
The recipes are very simple for the price they are asking. The music is extremely loud and nothing special in the food presentation.
When you are paying 50 $ for the small plate of the New Zealand lamb, you expect at least a fancy designed place to be in.
I don't understand what is so special there...
Additionally, as a guest of the city, I was disappointed with the location of this place, to keep such prices. You are leaving the restaurant, where you spent 500$ and get on the streets full of homeless people, where you feel unsafe. it was an unpleasant addition to the whole bad experience....
I would never recommend this place to any of my friends.
This city has much more to offer to it's visitors.
Still our favourite restaurant in Vancouver
We come to Vancouver a few times a year and Kissa Tanto is always top of our list. We visited again this month on our honeymoon and everything was wonderful, as always. We arrived late with no reservation, we were greeted warmly and sat at the bar, which is such a fun experience. Everything was delicious, the team took great care of us and we had great cocktails too. We work in the hospitality industry and it is always a delight to visit a restaurant of this calibre, that delivers on the food, drinks, service and ambience every single time. If we had to pick one restaurant to visit or to recommend, it would be Kissa. Thanks again.

Another Vancouver venue where you don't really have a dinner, just small plates of overpriced tid-bits. The food is quite nicely prepared and the service is attentive. Other than that - overpriced and not very satisfying. We paid $600 for 4 people and I came home and made a sandwich. The wine is marked up about 4 times the LCB price. The place is so dark that I couldn't read the menu and the loud 1970's jazz-fusion music makes having a conversation difficult. Would I go back? No.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed and Bad Customer Service
My girlfriend felt sick after eating their moldy tomatoes, so we decided to not continue with the rest of the tasting menu. After this, they wanted to charge us the full $270...I said no. Manager came and said "this isnt cactus club" (my gf works at cactus). Super disrespectful. On top of this, he made some xenophobic remarks. Honestly a terrible place, super overpriced and horrible management.
Be the first to ReplyFlavours that leave you speechless
First time at this place, and I went with hight hopes. I had heard the food was good but pricey, which is understandable. If you are after quality, you should pay for it accordingly. Upon arrival, we were greeted pleasantly and explained how the ordering works. Portions are small and are suggested for sharing so order accordingly ( as we did). The menu is not excessively large but there were options for everyone ( I am pescatarian ). The waitress was very attentive and professional. She helped us choose and noted the mild allergy at our table. We tried the stuffed olives ( really nice) and the smoked tuna pate ( fairly generous portion and delicious). We had the seafood pasta for second course ( flavours were out of this world) and the serving was small but perfect to keep you wanting to try the main course. I had the salmon and he had the pork ( day special). I eat a lot of salmon and have access to top quality freshly caught seafood, but this dish blew my mind. I can not remember when and where I had salmon done to this level of perfection. I am not sure what the sauce was but it left me speechless. Pork was really good too. Even though we were full we still ordered dessert. It did not disappoint.... the bottle of wine was nice. Bill was just under $500 ( with a generous tip) for two and we left happy and eager to come back.

Be the first to ReplyOur favorite restaurant in Vancouver
Kissa Tanto is one of our favorite restaurants and for us is the best in the city. The room is beautiful, every element has been meticulously thought out and designed leading to a dining room that is warm, inviting, comfortable, elegant and fun. The cocktails are great, innovative originals and takes on classics, changing regularly but with some of our favorites always remaining. The service is outstanding. The team are warm, welcoming, friendly, engaging and knowledgeable, with many of the team being part of the opening team or joining shortly after. The food is always wonderful. Japanese Italian combining all the great flavors and textures of both cuisines, with lots of big umami flavors, without being gimmicky. Our favorites from this trip were the beef tartare, the side polenta and tagarin with miso cured egg yolks and mushrooms. The stuffed fried olives, pickles, tiramisu and yuzu cream are all not to be missed. We try to visit every time we are in the city and the team never disappoint. We got engaged here during this visit and look forward to coming back to celebrate for many years to come.

We really enjoyed this restaurant, it's a very unique dining experience!
Every dish was delicious except the deep fried octopus in the octopus salad was extremely tough- although the salad itself was amazing!!
A very unique interesting blends of Italian with Japanese cooking techniques and ingredients.
Not as bright and colorful as I thought it might be, although well decorated and attractive.
Our server was fabulous, knowing very intimate details about the menu and sake pairing.
