When in Nice…
La Merenda is something of an institution in Nice although we had not visited for a long time. We are glad to have returned. The food is very good, very Niçois. Four of us shared a plate of finely sliced coppa to begin with - full of flavour . Starters of pissaladière and pesto pasta to follow - very good especially the pissaladière. We had four different main courses. My perugines with lentils was excellent and my companions enjoyed their daube de boeuf, tripe ( not my thing at all) and the stockfish (which did have a few bones in it) The waiter was very good - he has it down to a fine art as he is the only one. It is busy and you really need to book although a few people who turned up at around 9pm were able to get in. You sit on stools. It’s not that cheap but it is definitely worth a visit.
Be the first to ReplyRegional cuisine with a home-cooked feel
Excellent service, as we were served in no time and the staff was super friendly. The place is quite charming, and fortunately there was no one in the table right next to us, which is always a plus in such a small place. The food was very good. We ordered pissaladière and beef stew and had also chocolate mousse and lemon pie for dessert. Definitely a highlight of our stay in Nice. I was curious to visit again and try the other dishes!
Be the first to Replyeating well once upon a time
exceptional. I have been going for decades and there is no other place in Nice, unless you want fish, to have a special lunch or dinner.
Be the first to ReplyToo expensive !A true money-making machine! Escape this place !!
Minimalist service, extremely expensive prices. Nothing on the plate, quantities are too small, and the prices have become exorbitant. The room is very small, uncomfortable, with few tables; with the door open constantly, you can feel a draft. Everything is in cash, ... everything is set up perfectly to make money without declaring. A true money-making machine! Avoid this place !!
Be the first to ReplyExpected too much….
We were full of anticipation and had read about this restaurant in a blog on the internet. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. We had expected something special from the whole restaurant. It was very cramped, very cold (the windows were open and there was a draft). The service didn't give us the impression that we were welcome guests. The food was regional, but without any spices. We had expected something special. We had the impression that we were being processed like in a canteen. After an hour we had eaten both the starter and the main course. After that we were given the impression that we could now pay. In our opinion, the hype about this restaurant is completely unfounded. We cannot recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing 2nd visit.
The first was several years ago and I wanted to show this iconic restaurant to my partner. Disappointment ! The stuffed sardines and the wine, even the bread, were delicious. For the rest (pissaladière, stockfish, stew) it was at least questionable, if not very good. All this in the uncomfortable setting that we know (but a big step forward: we can finally book), full of foreigners, at a stratospheric price that we can only pay in cash (too bad for the taxman!). The boss stays glued to his counter, does not venture into the room, and he is right...
Be the first to ReplyONLY FOR LOVERS OF PROVENCAL CUISINE!
A much overrated restaurant, a simple menu with only Provencal dishes, the stockfish (in homeopathic quantities) consisted of bones and olives that had not been pitted, not a recommendation from us.
Be the first to ReplyThe best Cuisine de Nissarde
Some reviews were not favorable to this restaurant but we found it to be great. It is small and yes there are stools to sit on but we found them comfortable. The staff was friendly and the food was exceptional. Some complained that the beef stew was not good, chewy. I found it amazing. Everyone has their own expectations but if you want the best Cuisine de Nissarde in Nice, then this is the place.
Be the first to ReplyRestaurant Wow!! meh!! Far too expensive
Tiny room, small uncomfortable stools. The stew was well cooked but the meat was very tough (26€!!!!) the portions were just right but nothing more. Disappointed for a previously starred chef. Show off!!! Go on your way. Prices not justified.
Be the first to ReplyA delicious lunch in Nice
The service is good and the food is a DREAM. Very simple but superb. The green pasta with fresh pesto was fantastic. The pissaladière (traditional Nice onion pizza served lukewarm) was how I remembered it from having it every summer as a kid. The beef stew (daube) was tender and flavorful. The chocolate mousse was very chocolatey and (in the French style) less sweet, a delight. The one and only downside here is that it’s cramped. Guy behind me elbowed me (accidentally) several times during the meal. And you definitely have to reserve. But don’t miss this if you go to Nice!

One of the first restaurants I was told about when I moved to live in Nice was La Merenda. Intriguing Story of the great Chef who stressed by the pressure of the "Stars" , leaves, and decides to take over the management of a very small place dear to him for traditional Nice food .He makes it his little corner of paradise away from the hectic pace. It almost sounds like a short story or the plot of a movie…. But: The feeling is of being Chickens in a battery being fed in time, the space actually being little more than that of a cage.. The food served turns out to be absolutely horizontal , in the sense that it may be very fine to everything else in the World ( actually present in the other cages) but to those who have been fortunate enough to have had a wife, husband, mother, grandmother, aunt with roots in traditional cuisine, be it Italian or French , this place turns out to be totally Bland. If 24 place settings every 90 minutes for 4 shifts a day, 5 days a week, mediocre food, lived in a space with no possibility of escape, if only for the look ; I think the concept of Paradise has adapted too much to the times we are living in...
Be the first to ReplyGreat local cuisine
Food is is very nice, local cuisine, how they work in such a small space I have no idea. Tables are very close, don’t let this put you off, the food is well worth it…..Do remember they do not take credit cards, which in this day and age is bizarre!! You can only book either via Instagram or by going in person, no phone here either. The place was full when we went and at least two groups just turned up to be turned away. The pizza as a starter, I was unsure as a starter, was great and the beef stew hit the spot. Well worth trying to get a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyDeeply original and tasty kitchen
Perhaps Merenda has the best chef in Nice (as Le Stanc led Negresco ro 2*./ He left and now has a most secret cozy Restaurant , just 24 sqm! You sit close and cannot avoid tomtalk with the next tavble 30 cm away and i sincerely hope fee take the trouble NOT to follow in our footsteps.
We had 3 courses and all were exemplary Inc the pissaladiere and lentilles . The wine list is as short as the menu, but who cares when the taste is good?
Delicious 🥰
Can’t understand any bad reviews!
We walked by today at lunch time and booked for the evening, very accommodating.
Delicious food, we had the pasta, the beef and desserts and paired with the red wine, so glad we visited, in and out in just over an hour, great service, all fresh great tasting food, lovely place.
Worst meal of our week in Nice
The food was terrible. The prices very high. Our starters of polenta with gorgonzola(which we have eaten lots of times in Italy)and which was the most expensive starter offered, showed up as a watery gruel with some grains of oversalted polenta and a thin slice of gorgonzola, that had been heated to tepid level under a grill. This was a very, very, very distant cousin to the soft/creamy/pillowy polenta we ate in Italy(no salt in Italy mind you as the cheese is already salty). The rucola and cherry tomato sald with ricotta showed up with exactly 2 tiny cherry tomatoes; a thin slice of salted ricotta; and some rucola (no cooking required by the supposedly wonderful chef). The mains- a Daube(beef stew) which we had eaten earlier that week, and which was wonderful in another Nice restaurant, but here it was a plate of inedible gristle and fat.My wife left it. And I had the lentils and Perugina (Italian) sausages(interesting description on the menu) which clearly used the plural of sausage. What I got was again a watery dish of lentils(not drained properly?) and 3 pieces of sausage, which when I pushed them together did not form even one complete small sausage.Again over salted. I ate the 3 pieces, and left the waterlogged lentils. We didnt bother with dessert. We had one small glass of wine each and half a bottle of water and paid €82.
This place is a nightmare of discomfort- seating is on small stools with no backs, as in a children's school, tables are jammed together(24 people in all);and ordering and serving is constantly interrupted by the poor saps coming in to try to book a toble for a future meal, as there are no telephone reservations;no internet; etc such that customers are forced to make a pilgrimage in person to make a reservation.Even 3 Michelin star restaurants don't do this kind of nonsense. If the food was sublime, you might forgive all these obstacles, but the food is very poor. The aging chef with a ponytail- someone should tell him that being well past 60 it is no longer cool. The waiter saw that we had left most of the food.
There are far better and much less expensive places in Nice that are more welcoming. Go to Le Safari in place Saleya around the corner were we had a fab meal for less money.
