On ne mange rien au Mange-Tout
Le Mange-Rien would be a better name. First time ever in my life to be refused in a restaurant. My wife and I were refused for not being Japanese (or at least not speaking Japanese fluently enough). I wonder how one would define this... It is a mystery to me how Michelin can give any stars to such an establishment.
Japan has been nothing else than wonderful for us up to this moment. Le Mange-Tout managed singlehandedly to disappoint me for the first time about something in this lovely country. A doubtful honour.
Strange way to say “tanjoubi omedetou”! I will have to celebrate my 51st birthday elsewhere today.
Not up to standard
Almost every dish was oversalted. The venison stew so overwhelmingly oversalted, I had to down two glasses of water just to finish it off.
The crab bisque tasted like water after washing the pan.
The first course consisted entirely of beetroot.
No menu was offered beforehand, with limited information (even in Japanese) of the ingredients used. A real health hazard for those with allergies.
Service average at best - a superficial facade attempt to imitate high western standards.
Stunned how it got its two stars.
Best in Tokyo
This was, without a doubt, the most memorable dining experience I've had in Tokyo (if not on all my travels).
The food was superb. Simple as that. Every single course was delicious, well presented and explained by the server. Although I love French food, I struggle with the butter heavy feasts this entails. And here was a chef who had somehow mastered the art of keeping the French but somehow making it Japanese light. I simply loved it.
The food was not all though. When we arrived at the restaurant, we watched as the staff prepared the food. That was such a treat, as both my husband and I love both eating and cooking. I was even allowed to smoke (How French is that? - not at all there days, I know). Please don't hold it against the restaurant - the fan got rid of the smoke in no time and the rest of the areas are smoke free. After our delicious meal in the intimate and lovely locale, we spent some time talking with the chef and staff about food, restaurants and travels while being offered tea. The entire staff then followed us out to the taxi and bowed as we drove away. The treatment and send-off we recieved warmed my heart and reminded me why i love Japan so much.
I will never forget this. Thank you.
