A weekend to remember
A wonderful luxurious relaxing weekend away for my husbands birthday and our mini moon. It was beautiful, peaceful and the food was Devine. Room was lovely, staff were very attentive and it was a joy to stay and dine here. Could not fault a thing- thank you! Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to have a little experience of luxury for a weekend getaway.
Be the first to ReplyTruly…….. extra special
This was our second visit, but this time we came with family to make it a party of four. Accommodation : We choose Oyster Catcher as our room; as well as a classic double. The beauty of Oyster Catcher is the sun sets into the Ex estuary and so the sun streams into your room as you have uninterpreted views to the sea. Also the two settees allow visitors plenty of space to sit when they visit. Food: However, whilst the rooms are either nice, nicer, etc; we’re all here for the food, aren’t we? I know we were. We selected the A La Carte menu and I’ve uploaded loads of shots of the food. As always Michael Caine’s food is REALLY special and it was him cooking our food. He was even kind enough to come into the bar after the meal to ask us how our stay was going and did we like the food. Silly question. For 20 years he had 2* at Gidleigh Park - he certainly deserves two here.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding in every way
We stayed for 3 nights (this was our third visit) and it was a great experience all around from arrival when our luggage was taken to our room and the car parked for us to the same experience on leaving. All of the staff were first class throughout, polite, attentive (but not overly so) helpful, and knowledgeable. We had a meal in the pool house on the first night and that was good, second night the Estuary Tasting Menu was outstanding one of the best meals we have had, On the final night we opted for the light residents' menu in the lounge and that too was v good. Our room was the Nuthatch, spacious with a lovely view over the garden and estuary with an incredibly comfortable bed. We will certainly be back.
Be the first to ReplySUBLIME....MICHAEL CAINES DESERVES 2 STARS!
I celebrated a special big birthday recently and have always wanted to taste Michael Caines cooking, so we went for the beautiful Heron Suite which did not disappoint with its stunning side by side brass bath tubs. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room peaceful with great views of the estuary. I know some people have mentioned having difficulty with the low level automatic night lighting, but after a few attempts you get used to the technology! The highlight of the 2 night stay were Michael's 2 tasting menus, the food was faultless, beautifully executed and each course as flavoursome as the next Our favourite tasting menu was the Signature menu. We loved the unobtrusive, attentive and caring staff, they made my birthday feel special without obvious over the top behaviour! There are some hotels where you feel stung by the high prices, but not here, it was worth every penny. Thank you to all at Lympstone Manor.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful dinner
The hotel is great but we went for the restaurant. The tasting menu was wonderful. Nothing could have been better in the restaurant. Hotel reception staff not perfect but everyone else was including the first aid trained member of staff! Lovely views.
Be the first to ReplyA bit of the curate's egg
There is a bit of the curate's egg about Lympstone Manor. Overall, it certainly deserves its 5 star rating, but that is made up of 7 stars for the restaurant but rather less for the hotel. Michael Caines has certainly not lost his touch - the food is truly sensational. I first tasted his cuisine decades ago at Gidleigh Park and have been keen to experience it again ever since. It was worth waiting for. My wife and I both ordered the Estuary Menu and it was beyond comparison with anywhere other than Nathan Outlaw - and that is as good compliment as I can offer. The service also matched the high standards of the food. Highly recommended and well worth the not inconsiderable price. The hotel is also of a high standard, the staff are exceptional and a lot of money has clearly been spent on the refurbishment of the stately mansion. But sadly the decoration just does not quite work. The attempt to complement the traditional architecture with modern furnishings treads a fine line between being kitsch and just plain naff - and sadly it does not always stay on the right side. It is not helped by the inclusion of far too many sculptures being offered for sale virtually everywhere you look. I do not appreciate being sold to when I am spending a lot of money to stay in a luxury hotel. It might be that the 'look' at Lympstone Manor is just not to my taste, but it seems a huge missed opportunity to create something really special.

Wonderful, relaxing, peaceful, attention from staff was above and beyond. The setting was beautiful and we will certainly return. The quality and presentation of the food was immpeccable, as well as being so very tasty.
Be the first to ReplyLYMPSTONE MANOR, THE PERFECT EXPERIENCE
WOW WOW WOW. Probably one of the best stays we have experienced to date. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, 1st class service & great hospitality was shown to us. Our car parked for us, Our luggage to to our room, Our room was exceptionally clean, the bed amazingly comfortable. Shown to our room and all information we needed explained. And enjoyed our pre poked bootle of champagne on our room. Pre drinks at the bar, an unforgettable experience as the barman had the knowledge about his bar which made for an enjoyable Experience. Our meal was like a private event, the service Was just beyond perfect. Every part explained So we knew exactly what we were enjoying to eat. Not just dished up, our restaurant experience Really made for a great personal evening. Then coffee and champagne in the relaxing bar area. Reception very very helpful. The grounds and views just breath taking. On our departure our luggage collected from our room and taken to our car. This was the first time my wife visited since she lived in the grounds 45 years ago. This was my Christmas present from my wife. Our experience was just breathtaking. Thank you to all the staff & management at this fine hotel, we had a great time and will be Returning in the near future. 100% perfect thank you
Be the first to ReplyLunctime at the Pool House
We were looking forward to a family meal at the Pool House at Lympstone Manor. My son trained at Exeter College and has fond memories of working with Michael Caines and my daughter in law worked at The Royal Clarence as front of house, again until Michael’s direction. Although the setting is very beautiful and the restaurant was comfortable for the children, the food was a great disappointment. We were not expecting Michelin Star quality however there was no excuse to serve customers with such badly produced food. I would have like to see the menu listing food sourced from the local producers for which Devon is so famous. Instead, it appears that the food had been sourced from supermarkets. The menu was unimaginative and old-fashioned serving cod courgettes which were dry and obviously had been frozen. The rest of the starters were similar to something one could have bought in Lidl’s. Putting turkey on the menu in February gives the impression of getting rid of leftovers from Christmas. A celeriac risotto was tasty but again unimaginative with only a sprinkling of parmesan on the top. None of the food was fresh, green beans were defrosted and swimming in water. It would have been considerably cheaper and better to have eaten at the Puffing Billy in Exton, just up the road. After this very disappointing meal to then be served with watery coffee was a real insult. However, the staff were the saving grace, both attentive and very helpful. We had a good game of tennis to round off the afternoon.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely stunning!
What a fantastic stay in one of the Shepherd huts. It was much better than I was expecting. The quality and attention to detail was phenomenal. This is very local to me and I felt like I was miles away.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful meal in glorious setting
This is the second time we have attempted to visit Lympstone Manor for Michael's Signature 8 course tasting menu and I am pleased to say it was definitely worth the wait. The setting is absolutely beautiful and the food is packed with flavour and presented with real class. The staff are knowledgeable, charming and helped make the whole experience very special. The only downside, if there is one, is that we hadn't booked a room to make the whole thing last that little longer. There's always next time however as we will definitely be visiting again.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive but excellent
Our 2nd time at Lymstone and we were not disappointed. Fabulous food, very attentive and very happy staff, brilliant room, lovely grounds and we had a nice chat with chef Jordan. It is expensive but overall the experience is well worth the ecpense.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday lunch. Tasting menu for 12
We had high expectations and came away disappointed. It was not Michelin star servive and not Michelin star food although some dishes were tasty. We had the tasting menu and the duck terrine we had been promised was replaced with some tomatoes in consomme without warning. One of us is allergic to tomatoes. The service was very slow in the middle and we ended up having the cheese, both desserts and the coffee and petit fours at the same time although we were there for 4 hours. We paid the bill and tipped generously without complaining, but will not be back. Some in our party had been several times and said it had gone downhill.
Be the first to ReplyAn exquisite tasting menu in an excellent venue with 5* service throughout!
I made a reservation at Lympstone Manor for the signature tasting menu. We had a table for four in a lovely small dining room overlooking the grounds and beyond to the river Exe. Amazing service throughout from a team of very attentive staff. The food was exquisite, by far the most impressive meal we have had post COVID. Despite lunch for two, including drinks and a service charge costing over £450, it was it was totally worth it and we will absolutely return.
Be the first to ReplyCustomer service needs urgent attention
Our weekend experience was disappointing. The hotel has spoken to us at length since. They were thankful for our highlighting the issues we encountered namely that the chef went home before the end of service and ensures us that all of the issues will be effectively addressed. Chef went home during dinner our service Our waitress who was really nice asked, “do you still want petit fours or are you okay?” What a strange way to ask that but we obliged. After a very long wait for just four sugar coated jelly/sweets, our waitress told us that “the pastry chef has gone home for the day”, but that she managed to find these sweets for us instead. We still bring it up for laughs now and again! The sommelier asked, “you’re ok with your wine, aren’t you?”, afraid we’d order more drinks but obliged to ask. Being the only guest left, we were ushered from the restaurant to the bar area with our sad looking petit fours. I was in heels so we asked the concierge who doubled as one of the servers if we could get a buggy ride back to the hut. He impatiently repeated our question out loud and when the receptionist picked up the hint, she obliged. She said she finishes work in 15 minutes, and I guess that explains why she sped over all the bumps. The same lady drove us to the restaurant earlier on and that was a much more pleasant ride. We urge Lympstone Manor to please make dinner reservation for your guests at a much earlier time to accommodate your staff finish times! Or I suggest finding out in advance what menu your guests will have, to help improve your logistics as well as save embarrassment all-round! Poor service and lack of attention to detail We had the eight course Signature tasting menu. The staff put comical pressure on us to place our drinks order immediately. Three staff members came to our table literally within seconds of each other wanting our order. They were frustrated I should add. Everyone dining at the restaurant were seated on the terrace looking out across to the estuary which was a nice touch. They insist that you have 30 minutes for aperitifs, so they pushed our requested dinner reservation from 7.30pm to 8pm. For all the rush, the drinks took a long time to come so we were behind schedule. Slow dinner service We grew restless waiting so long between courses. The delicately sweet roasted Lyme Bay scallop and Isle of Wight tomato salad lifted our spirit. Unfortunately the mains were unrefined and uneventful. The colours to the duckling and lamb dishes were dull in dark reds and browns. Adding other colours would make them more appetising. The ratatouille of the lamb dish looked homemade. The lamb tasted bland and chewy. The beetroot with the duckling dish was not pickled enough, so it was sickeningly sweet pared with the molasses and duck. They kept making mistakes with our drinks order and misplacing the table setting. It was our last night at the Hare’s Rest, shepherd hut. We had planned to sit out on our terrace with some drinks under the stars afterwards and enjoy the cosy hut, but dinner had stalled so often that we were exhausted and having to check out the next day, we called it a night. The price for the tasting menu is imbalanced and unjustified considering the lack of service. We were fans of Michael Caines so we gave it a try. The Signature tasting menu is £195 per person for 8 courses. Core by Clare Smyth, a 3 Michelin star restaurant offer their most premium 7 course tasting menu at £205 per person. In other words, you can enjoy brilliant service and a 3-star menu for just £10 more! Pros The grounds are beautiful, and we picked a great weekend weather-wise to enjoy the pool. Our hut was cosy and private. They provided everything including straighteners. The facilities are good. They provide Pashley bikes, which we took to the beach, approx 30 minute each way if you’re stopping occasionally for snack breaks and pics of the beautiful views. Personally, Tom was the most helpful staff member we met. We only met him on the morning of check out. Our train back to London was cancelled last minute. We would just make it for the earlier train otherwise it would’ve been an 8 hour wait for the next one. But there were no taxi’s available, so Tom offered to drive us to the station. What a relief! He was kind and friendly. We were thankful that he offered, and it was a pleasant ride. Cons Ultimately poor service across the board has left us with a bad memory of Lympstone House. We wish it wasn’t so! Given that the estate is purposefully secluded, we relied heavily on ground staff. Unfortunately, their priority was elsewhere. We didn’t feel welcomed. We felt we were imposing on the staff and overstayed our welcome. As lovely as the ground were, I couldn’t wait to leave by the end of the weekend. More poor service We couldn’t wait to relax and enjoy our break after the 6-hour journey door to door. So, although the staff who took our bags didn’t greet us and didn’t say a word until we broke the awkward silence, we were just happy to finally be at our destination. Our room wasn’t ready and while the same man who took our bags showed us to the bar, another staff member out of nowhere looking very unfriendly snapped, “you can drink here or over by the pool house”. We were taken back by the staff’s sudden appearance and bluntness. This wasn’t a good start. But it was a beautiful day… and we were just happy to finally be at our destination! I smiled, said hello to the scary lady and asked to be sat by the pool. It would have been nice to have had a tour of the beautiful rooms and an introduction of the building and grounds, but we were left to figure that out ourselves. Although we were a little deflated by their unfriendly energy, we were determined to enjoy the rest of our break. We soon learned that the staff are just not attentive. They do not go beyond their responsibilities and are not happy when they must. The staff at the pool house were just as unenthused. Half an hour later, the bar staff returned with our drinks but forgot where we sat and gave them to another couple. We were only one of three couples in the area! It was a painful wait for our food and drinks order, even when we were one of the earliest guests to order dinner on Friday night. The female staff who seemed to be managing service is hostile. She was one of the three staff that rushed us for our aperitifs on Saturday. Very intimidating and it made me anxious. The general manager was not welcoming. He asked us if we were ok, while grabbing a travel bag about to follow the guest up to their room. We would’ve appreciated if he asked another staff member to look after us, it would be understandable since he was in the middle of something. But he walked away, and we were left alone. Afterwards we were quite surprised to learn that he was the general manager. We believe that with better management this hotel will live up to 5 stars as it promises. The service lets them down which is a real shame since the manor has great potential. It appears the staff spread themselves thin, perhaps explains why we lost that personal touch? We have never had to make a complaint but if it helps Lympstone Manor raise service and operations management levels that are fundamental to running a five star hotel then it would have been worth it. We sincerely hope to see Lympstone Manor thrive in its infancy and wish the team the very best. Small things that added up: - Staff and manager were not welcoming. - Hand towel was dirty. Forgot to give us new one when we asked. - Forgot to send us morning newspaper when they offered. - Mistakes on food and drinks at breakfast. - Very slow food and drinks service. - Misplaced table setting. - Overheard the couple next to us at breakfast send back their overcooked soft-boiled eggs and toast soldiers, saying “the whole point of having soldiers is so you can dip them in the soft yolk.” We arrived after them, but they took almost until we finished our breakfast before bringing him another pair of overcooked eggs. To which the man said to his partner “I give up!”
Be the first to ReplyA mixed experience.
The location of Lympstone Manor and it’s outlook, across the Exe estuary, is breathtaking. The welcome was excellent with a member of staff ready to unload our car and valet park for us. The welcome staff inside were similarly excellent and we felt well looked after. We were shown to our room, which was well appointed, clean and with nice welcome touches. our luggage was waiting for us in the room. The one problem was that the room was terribly hot, there was no air conditioning. We had this problem throughout our stay. At dinner aperitifs in the bar area was up to the standard expected but the dining room was not. We were sat in an enclosed banquette, my wife sitting on the banquette an I sat opposite on a chair. We felt quite a distance apart. On leaving the restaurant after dinner we couldn’t move the table to allow my wife to leave her seat. It was noticeable that there were no restaurant staff in the room to help. I had to go to reception to find someone to assist in moving the table. This was poor. Dinner was an appetiser and three courses from the A la Carte menu. The appetiser and first course were excellent and of Michelin standard. The main course of cote d’agneau was not. It was bland with fairly tasteless garnishes. I spoke to the restaurant manager about this and he brought a pot of split jus which when added to the plate transformed the dish. In a restaurant of this standard I would not expect to have to complain about such a problem. Breakfast next day was well served but unexceptional. Again on departure the reception staff were excellent.
Be the first to ReplyLoved the Shepherds Hut and beautiful hotel
We were early for check in so we hadca light lunch by the pool, plus used the pool too, lovely setting. I had a burrata & chicory salad, lovely. They overcharged us on the bill for two large bottles of sparkling water! Check your bill! We sayed in The Beehive, it was well kitted out with everything you would need if you were going to be self catering for a few days. A lovely roll top bath opposite the bed, outside Bath jacuzzi (didn't use) as next play would have a large one. I did use the outside shower the next day, lovely being outside in nature under hot water. We only stayed one night so had the tasting menu in the restaurant. We had the estuary menu, very good, it seemed pricey at first glance compared to other Michelin establishments, the ingredients used were very good quality. We really enjoyed them, lobster salad yum, confit salmon & caviar and best pud of pistachio soufflé. Staff in the restaurant were lovely and we were offered a kitchen tour after our meal & met the Head chef Jordon Dennings, who took the time to answer questions about some of the dishes. My future father in law also had a tour of the wine cellar (he works for Martinez) & has great interest. Lots of gorgeous art pieces dotted around.

And another visit to this great establishment. Fantastic before the pool was open now fantasticer!!! I could say how good the service was, how you get looked after, how good the food is, but if you’ve seen other reviews I’ve written about this you know I love the place. If we want to go on holiday we would have to drive past to go to the airport - why bother, stay here!
Be the first to ReplyHut, supper, breakfast and a wood fired outdoor bath. Sublime.
Stayed in Beehive hut so that we could join a family anniversary. Comfortable and ingeniously equipped. Particular delight the wood fired outdoor bath. Buggy service to main hotel. Cocktails by pool and hotel great. Supper itself excellent value and tantalising flavours, textures, combinations; well up to plaudits. Ample, helpful, friendly staff. Setting and estuarine views peaceful. Strewn with sculpture, artworks. Will improve as matures. Shepherds hut a good choice for us. Would return. Recommended. Would have given more useful positive detail if TripAdvisor software would allow it to upload.
