Great food but leave the hearing aid at home.
The food is at the top of the list. Perfection in 8 courses. A few hints. The noise level is somewhat higher in the main dining room, quieter on the patio but then, there will be road noise from passing traffic. So this is not the place for a quiet conversation over dinner. Otherwise, best food in the vicinity.

We visited maple gray for the first time. I had the tasting menu and they were able to accommodate my gluten allergy. My husband ordered off the menu and we both enjoyed all of the food and the service was excellent. We will definitely be back.

The 'tasting menu' is as good as anything I have had in similar places in New York and San Francisco. Perfect. Only issue is the noise level in the place which is amplified by their choice of music and the walls which reflect rather than absorb.
Be the first to ReplyDidn’t try to accommodate
Been here once before and it was excellent. This time we were prepared to order the Wagyu steak ($100.) , and the other two of us were going to order the tasting menu with the pairings. We asked the waitress Kaite if the chef could accommodate my niece who is lactose intolerant. Immediately she said “I don’t think so”. When I asked if she could check with the chef she only replied with “well we’ve been so serving this menu all week”. Needless to say the restaurant lost a huge cover. So we ended up with a lamb burger which was delicious, black bean soups, delicious, grilled oysters which were unremarkable and the mushroom salad which was just okay. I asked for a smoky bourbon cocktail chefs choice which was delicious however when the bill came they added an extra six dollars for “dealers choice”, why not just add that into the price of the cocktail. And biggest pet peeve which we experienced last time was the ridiculous font on the menu. It is extremely difficult to read and we also noticed other customers were having the same problem asking the waitress to translate many items.
Be the first to ReplyVery good food but...
The food and service is very good. We were taken promptly at the time we reserved. The menu is small and we decided not to do the tasting menu, so two of us had the fish entre and two had a pasta dish. Both dishes were delicious. We also had a very good salad that was huge to begin with. The wine selection is also very nice. The big BUT is that if you do not like the smell of grilled meat, this restaurant is not for you. Since it is so small, the smell of grilled meat hits you when you walk in the door. Most of our party happened to be pescatarians. We do not mind if others eat meat, but we do not like the smell of grilled meat and it is pervasive at this restaurant.

Almost all of us celebrated birthdays on the attractive patio at Mabel Gray yesterday afternoon. So there were a lot of folks having the tasting menu and all at slightly different times. The staff did an excellent job keeping the right amount of time between each wonderful dish: oysters, smokey apples, rich squash bisque with a perfect scallop among other delicious items. Thanks for making this a Happy Birthday 🎈!

I had been wanting to try Mabel Gray for awhile after hearing great things about it. After my experience I can honestly say the the restaurant, food, and staff far exceeded my high expectations. I sat at the bar and experienced the 8 course tasting menu (which I highly recommend). The menu changes daily and you don’t know what will be served until it arrives at your table. It was really fun to experience new dishes and flavors. In addition to the ridiculously delicious and creative food, the staff was a true standout. A variety of staff serves and explains the courses so you really meet and interact with just about every employee. Everyone was friendly, warm, and professional. The restaurant has onsite parking as well as an outdoor patio area. Don’t wait, give Mabel Gray a try and you definitely will not be disappointed. This is truly one of the best dining experiences in metro Detroit.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite restaurant in Michigan
My favorite restaurant in Michigan. They have outdoor seating at 6 & 8. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable. The snapper and burger were our main courses. The salad and asparagus were out of this world. Remember to leave room for dessert.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible and off the beaten path
this was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in years. the $65 tasting menu is crazy good and a bargain. the menu started with 2 differently prepared Island creek oysters in shells followed by chilled cucumber & guernsey soup, crostini with prosciutto roasted garlic aioli, a scrumptious scallop, a petit filet cooked to perfection and finally ended with a couple of incredible desserts. the unique courses just kept coming and looked as good as they tasted. (see pics) Paula the sommelier helped us with craft cocktails and perfect meal wine pairings. service was spot on and friendly. if you have not been to Mabel Gray, do yourself a favor and book a table now before you have to wait weeks for a reservation. splurge on the tasting menu and if you prefer the bar they will serve the tasting menu there too.

The tasting menu was outstanding. Unique flavor combinations paired with the freshest ingredients you could ask for. We can not wait to go again and again as the menu changes with the seasons.
Be the first to ReplyBest Restaurant in all of Detroit
Our favorite restaurant in all of Detroit, always always a great experience. We have been to multiple 2 and 3 star Michelin restaurants across the country and honestly this place is right up there with them. If only the Michelin guide came to Detroit! The food is fantastic, Chef Rigato creates delicious and incredible combinations of flavors. My husband always gets the tasting menu which is very reasonably priced and has never had a dish he didn't like. I always get the steak and truffle fries which is perfectly cooked. Additionally, we have taken several of Chef's online cooking classes - very well done w/ supplying all materials and recipes. He is very kind, patient, down to earth and an excellent teacher. He's helped me start eating seafood w/ his seafood class and made my husband a better cook! But what truly makes this place stand out are the people. The people and atmosphere make this place even better - everyone is so warm and welcoming from Colin greeting you at the door to Paulina's wine recommendations, Paul's fantastic drinks and to Max's superb service. Max remembers everything which is so impressive and always takes such great care of us when we dine there. We love everyone there and will be back over and over again!
