Nice Dinner at Mabel's Gone Fishing
Mabelโs Gon Fishing had been recommended by a few of my work friends so we decided to have a family dinner there. It fit the bill as a trendy North Park restaurant. The food was very good and the service excellent. I look forward to going back. There is a small parking lot in the back, but we ended up parking on the street a few blocks away. We had an early reservation so were seated right away. Our waiter Kevin turned out to be very efficient and informative. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and made some very nice wine recommendations. Attentive without hovering. The signature Spanish Gin and Tonic was worth it. Light and refreshing. But be carefulโฆ We were glad we decided to go with the Chefโs Tasting Menu. The initial course included Spanish olives, Mussels Escabeche and House Smoked Mackerel, and Jamon wrapped dates. The Mackerel melted in your mouth. The problem with the dates was that there were not more of them. The Sword fish steak was good as a main, but the smoked potatoes stole the show, the best that I have ever had. Finally, dessert was Basque Cheesecake. Not as sweet as the American version and a bit fluffier, very nice. The bathrooms were clean and well lit. I would have to say that tab seemed a little on the high side, but we all decided that the easy atmosphere, excellent service and very tasty food made it worth the experience.

Excellent seafood, and a welcome addition to San Diego's restaurant lineup. Smoked mackerel was tender and flavorful, served on very good sourdough bread. Ocean trout was equally good, cooked perfectly, just slightly rare. And Basque cheesecake was as smooth as NY cheesecake but with the added flavor of a caramelized sauce under it. My only disappointment was the cocktail, as the gimlet tasted nothing like what I was looking for, more like a margarita. Next time, I'll stick with beer or wine. The staff is friendly. The atmosphere in the room is vibrant, though a little loud for easy conversation. Street parking is difficult, but there is a commercial parking structure close by.

Server was very friendly and the place was packed. Menu is limited but we found four items to share between the two of us. Cheesecake was delicious with carmelized goat milk sauce. Iberian authenticity makes Mabelโs a stand out!

We made reservations at Mabel's Gone Fishing due to its national recognition by Michelin and raving reviews by friends. We wanted to have lunch so chose the brunch on a Sunday. The menu for brunch was not the same menu for dinner and no menus were posted online. We arrived early and they took us in immediately. The ambiance was okay - nothing special. The noise level from conversations in the restaurant made it very difficult for us to hear each other and we were seated directly in front of each other at a small table. The menu was interesting, and the waiter talked us through the various brunch dishes and recommended the two dishes we chose because they were very popular. We had the Tortilla Espanola and the Seafood Merguez Hash. We were told when we ordered that the dishes that they would come out separately when ready for serving - so one of the dishes came you several minutes before the second one. If we had not eaten the first dish right away it would have been cold before the second dish was delivered. Although the salad on top was good, the rest of the Tortilla Espanola was dry and badly needed seasoning. The Seafood Merguez Hash's potatoes were tasty, but the seafood sausage and the rest of the dish were meh โ almost tasteless. We walked away from brunch very disappointed. Since the restaurant is highly recommended for its dinner menu, we recommend that you make dinner reservations and avoid the brunch. You can find a better brunch at other restaurants in North Park. The food choices we made would likely not win any awards or recognition.
