Landmark market building in the St. Anthony district of Macau
The Red Market is located at the busy street market area of Ave. Horta e Costa and Ave. Almirante Lacerde in the St. Anthony District of Macau. It was constructed in the 1930s. However, instead of being designed in the traditional colonial manner like most buildings from the period, this building was given symmetric shape and form and was painted bright red, making it something of a landmark now because of its distinct appearance.
What you will find inside is an active three storey wet market with venders selling fresh produce and meats. The market is open from 7:30am to 7:30pm daily and scenes are usually photogenic. As are the market streets in the neighbourhood surrounding the Red Market. All in all, its worth a few minutes if you plan to spend time in this part of Macau during your visit.
Morning visit to Red Market
Although we been to Macau few times, this is the first time we went to Red Market. We found this market by accident as we searched for the famous congee shop and we found it to be next to the Red Market so after our congee breakfast we decided to walk around the area. The Red Market is a capital of Chinese cuisine products. We bought two roasted duck and few roasted pigeon to take back home as we were taking the afternoon flight back to Bangkok, and once home we found these are excellent. We got some dried scallop and also canned abalone, both are well priced and probably much cheaper than Hong Kong or the super market in Macao. Totally recommended if you are into food / cuisine. The atmosphere is very very Chinese local which we enjoy seeing different culture and how they cook.
