I think this was my third time dining at Mama Chang and it just gets better every time. I came here with a group of 6 girls and we got 6 dishes, two being sides and we had to take leftovers home. Service here is extremely efficient and the food comes out very quickly. This is kind of the closest thing to din tai fung for me LOL
Be the first to ReplyWorth the hype and great ambiance.
Mama Chang us located in a huge shopping center with ample parking. The restaurant itself was pretty big with ample seating but service was a bit slow on a Wednesday evening. We got the rib soup, pepper beef tenderloin, three cup chicken, snow pea tips, and pork belly with tea egg with were all very tasty. We especially liked the snow pea tip and the beef tenderloin which was both cooked and seasoned very well. We ended the meal with the citrus coconut pudding that was light and tasty--a good way to end the meal. A bit pricey but acceptable. Would definitely come again!

While dining at Mama Chang, we ordered the half Peking duck, but it resembled more of a roast duck. Upon comparing our dish to various images of Peking duck, it appeared they might have substituted a cheaper duck but charged us the Peking duck price. It would have been preferable if they informed us if they ran out of the specific duck. Additionally, the service was slightly abrupt; despite having ample food remaining, we were asked in a hurried manner if we intended to order anything else. Upon further review of various other Peter Chang restaurants and events, it appears that such deception is not uncommon, as they have been known to replace items without informing the customer. This lack of transparency regarding substitutions is disappointing and diminishes the overall dining experience

Between 3 and 4 stars but lean towards 4 cause the food was not bad. Ordered fried rice combination, seafood stone pot, Bao bbq dumplings, crab& pork soup dumplings. The price was not cheap but the food was not bad. I didn't feel completely ripped off, since the environment was nice and the food was decent. The thing that bothered me though was the seafood stone pot is kind of like a soup thing, there were no spoons except for a serving spoon. Maybe a bit awkward if sharing. Fried rice was good, but while I don't mind using chopsticks, I'm annoyed of having to use chopsticks for rice on a plate....Did ask for a spoon but wished I had maybe a bowl instead of a plate. Anyway, the dining experience could have been better with slightly better tools to eat with. Would expect a little better on that for the price paid but was not a big deal. It was not bad, I would go back with a friend that wanted to try the place; however, I would probably not be going back anytime soon. The food was not bad but it was not wow and it was on the expensive side.

Came for a Valentine's dinner on a weekday night, and it was quite busy. Thankfully we made a reservation so we got seated quickly, highly recommend making a reservation beforehand to skip the busy queue. The inside of the restaurant was decorated with Chinese New Year decorations and was well-lit. We ordered the scallion bubble pancake which came with a curry sauce. The pancake was hot and crispy - I recommend ordering this if you want a light appetizer before the rest of your meal. The pork soup dumplings were full of flavorful broth, and the dumpling skin was thin yet didn't break easily. The dumplings were delicious on their own and even better paired with the sauce! We wanted to order a vegetable so we went with spicy garlic eggplant. Not too spicy but very flavorful - would recommend ordering a side of rice to accompany this dish. The beef rice noodles took a while to come out but I loved the bounciness of the noodles and the beef was nice and tender. I wish the noodles came with bean sprouts and more scallions, but I still recommend this dish! There are a lot more dishes on the menu and I will definitely be returning to try more!

But it goes pretty quickly. Food portions are good. It's good, I wouldn't say great. But given the slim true authentic Cantonese choices around the area & close to home, I'll definitely go here.
Be the first to ReplyThe food here is very good.
The prices are not cheap but reasonable. Some things we didn't like: 1. Kitchen closes an hour before their closing time which is very odd. We came in at 845on a day where they close at 10pm. We ordered our food and it came out slightly before 9pm. We were asked to put in our dessert order because the kitchen is closing but we just barely started eating out entrees 2. They don't have good ventilation so you will end up smelling like food 3. The bubble pancake was interesting but quickly becomes stale if you don't eat it fast enough. The sauce served with it has an odd flavor and is served cold which we didn't care for What we ordered that we really enjoyed: 1. Dry fried cauliflower. This was my favorite dish. They are very generous with the Szechuan peppers so be prepared to have your whole mouth numb. A must order 2. Gamghood Friend chicken - light battering and very crispy 3. Hand pulled noodles - they really do a very nice job with this. The noodles are the perfect texture.

When we first entered Mama Chang's restaurant we couldn't get over how loud it was. They need something on the ceiling to deaden the loud noise. No ambiance AT ALL. It felt like a high school cafeteria. We ordered two dishes that we thought were pretty safe, mine was beef tenderloin with broccoli and my husband got the pork belly. I did not get beef tenderloin. The beef was fatty and chewy. I don't know if they know this but there is hardly any fat whatsoever in a beef tenderloin. My husband's pork belly was breaded and then had a soggy sauce on it. Both dishes were overly salty. We were given a large dish with only a bread dish size plate to work with. I asked for a cup of tea but was told they did not have tea. We only saw the waitress when she took our order and when she brought the check. We were asked if we wanted a container and we said "no thanks". All of the above for a grand total of $80. Needless to say, we won't be back.''

AMAZING! Best Chinese food you've ever had! Wait staff are wonderful. Our family loves the food and we come quite often.
Be the first to ReplyDidn't care for the fusion menu.
I was looking for traditional Chinese food because we lack very good Chinese cuisine in Fairfax (like Peking Gourmet in Falls Church, for example).

Overall, it was a positive experience - good food and service (if not during peak hours) and modern atmosphere. I can understand complaints about parking, but we arrived before 4pm, so it wasn't an issue. We ordered four dishes shown in photos. My favorite was the hot and sour soup with duck. The pepper fried chicken was a bit dry, so my least favorite. In total, we spent $81 (food, tax and tip). Would we come back? Maybe once a year. It's a bit overhyped and overpriced.

Authentic food and great atmosphere! Definitely one of the best Chinese places in the area!
Be the first to ReplySo good.
We started with duck spring rolls (isn't it funny how duck just makes everything better?) and some Triple layer doupi, filled with sticky rice, asparagus l, mushroom and pork (an interesting dish from Hubei but not one grand enough to get again), before digging into spicy eggplant with garlic sauce (superbly tasty, but with some serious heat), Tofu skin and cabbage (we got is without heat, and it was a delicious sesame-dressed salad), and sweet and sour braised baby ribs (a classic Cantonese indulgence). Love this place.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful second visit.
The fish was great, and sesame noodles a big hit! Shredded tofu-skin salad was very interesting too.

This is a Chinese brunch type place that you never thought of going but would be missing out if you didn't go. It's quite a large place and they can accommodate a lot of tables and even larger family tables. I rarely see the round tables that are regularly associated with large dim sum establishments back in the day. The interior is nice and bright. Lots of greenery even if it is fake. The food is good and delicious. Some dishes are better than others and it takes time to figure out which ones to get. My only complaints are (1) parking and (2) slow service. Parking is a bit limited when you want to be close to the restaurant. When it is busy, it really shows. It can be a bit tough to navigate. I would suggest parking farther away just for peace of mind. Slow service was because the place was busy. We were seated where the server had to take care of 2-3 of the larger tables and we didn't get our rice or a refill of water in over 40 minutes. Still tried to charge for the rice - that never arrived.

My first experience at Mama Chang, the food was really delicious and comforting! The braised pork belly and tea egg is a must try the pork is so tender that it melts in your mouth. Put some of that pork belly on your rice you can eat two bowls of rice !!The other entrees I ordered was fantastic and don't miss eating desserts the pineapple bao (ball law bao) comes out warm and custardy inside!!! The restaurant is spacious and service is good.
Be the first to ReplyMy family and I came here on a weekend for lunch.
We were nervous walking up to the entrance, because we didn't have a reservation and there were several people already waiting to have a seat at the door. We arrived right when they opened at 11am-- so my first advice, get there early! We were seated quickly for a table of four. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful -- offering suggestions for various dishes and showing incredible patience while we made a thousand different tiny and obnoxious requests... like a fork, and hot tea, and an extra spoon.. sorry! We ordered a variety of dishes to share as a group. The lo mein was by far my favorite. It had a TON of flavor and the noodles had the most perfect bite to them-- leaps and bounds better than what you get at your typical take out spot. Loads of vegetables and pork were served within which made it so much more than just "noodles". The ganghood fried chicken was crispy and spicy with a light crunch. YUM. Everyone loved the pan seared pork dumplings which were savory, meaty and had the perfect ratio of filling to wrapper. The interior of the restaurant was bright and airy with lots of natural light coming from windows all along the sides. I would recommend making a reservation, if you remember! Also - dim sum offerings were available on the Sunday menu.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible ambience.
There truly is no other place like it in the Fairfax area. They are busy but quick. You feel teleported to a different area. Anything on the menu is good and perfect in my opinion.
Be the first to ReplyHave been coming here for the past year.
Always ordered mapo tofu no issue. This last time I had a severe fish allergic reaction meaning there was cross contamination. I am very disappointed as the reaction will keep me away from this place going forward.
Be the first to ReplyI have ordered the mapo tofu here several times.
This last time it was cross contaminated with fish which caused me to have a very serious allergic reaction. That's really unfortunate.

The soup dumplings were unexpected but delicious!! The savory pork broth came gushing out of that huge dumpling, honestly I would go back just for that. Roast duck was fantastic and just what you'd expect. It is more on the expensive side, but it shows in the dish quality and service.

My first time at Mama Chang and it did not disappoint! My boyfriend and I ordered the Pan Fried Chives Seafood dumpling to start. It comes with 2 for $7 but they are FAT dumplings with so much filling! For entrees we ordered the Hot Chili Oil Flounder Fish & Soft Tofu. It was super hot, and even had a fire underneath the serving dish to keep it warm. The Mama Lo Mein with pork was good lo mein, very similar in taste to typical Chinese takeout, but nothing greasy like takeout food - so it had the good aspects! I needed a veggie dish ofc, so we got the cauliflower and eggplant pot. The veggies were cooked deliciously! Great service here. I felt like we were served the food super quick! The ambience and decor is so nice as well, and really adds to the experience. This is a great spot for authentic Chinese food, great service, and a nice night out.

We had second lunch at Mama Chang yesterday,(24th, July) and ordered two different dishes. One is deep fried cauliflower, another one was Hot numbing spicy beef. The cauliflower was crispy and very well seasoned with lot of fresh scallion also coriander. The beef was really delicious too. Tender and full of flavor from all its spices. It was with Chinese big white cabbage and bean noodles in the bottom. We really recommend this dish if you can take spicy food. We found a little piece of WOOD inside the beef but the manager came and gave us two sweets. Their attitude was very polite and solved the problem very quick. Definitely will introduce to our friends and go again!

Had a great lunch experience today! we had 7 guests and the beautiful chaos of 4 different nationalities. Our server, Chris, took it in stride, with seperate checks, some communal dishes, and lots of indecision! The food was delicious and we all shared our selections and did our best with chopsticks. The MOD was a delightful young Malaysian man who also spoke Chinese- I didn't catch his name, but maybe Jamie? He was so gracious and accommodating! I would definitely return!
