High Art and Craft
I've been to Manresa many times and other 3 star joints all over. The meal I just had at Manresa was such high art and craft. Stunning food and pairings. If you are looking for transcendence, do not hesitate or delay. It doesn't get better.
Be the first to ReplySuperb and exciting
Every now and then you visit a place that mesmerizes you. Manresa did. True it is a 3 star Michelin restaurant so the expectations were high, but overall they delivered, with spectacular food, creative and intriguing presentations, and impeccable service. Nevertheless, are there areas that could improve? Yes there are, two as a matter of fact. First, when you arrive (5-10 minutes early so that they don't have to wait for you), they make you sit on comfortable chairs/couch. But you experience does not start there, it starts when you are seated. I suggest that they start the experience the moment you get through the door: provide some bubblies or any other 'welcome we are so happy you came' drink. Second, once seated we were greeted but after that waited for over 15 minutes before the first amuses were served. Again, I suggest keeping your guest mesmerized the moment they come in, don't make them wait. These 2 suggestions may sound harsh, they are not intended that way, but our first 25 minutes did contrast rather sharply with everything else we experienced in the next few hours.
Is eating at Manresa worth the hefty price? Definitely for special occasions. Whether the wine pairing is worth its price I am less convinced. The wines were good, no question, but not spectacular. The wine portions could be more generous and why oh why did it not include champagne?
One of the two four star restaurants in NCal that I think deserve it
Manresa and Single Thread are the two restaurants in N Cal that I think deserve the stars and the price of their meals. We went there to celebrate two birthdays and a retirement and received personalized menus at the end of the meal noting the occasions. The food was beautiful, unusual, paced well, and delicious. The seafood I thought was exquisite fresh and prepared in a way that didn't overwhelm the quality of the seafood (sea urchin, oyster, scallops, crab, and I forget what else) over 3-4 courses. Service was attentive and observant. We had asked to buy a bread since their bakery was closed and although they said we couldn't buy one, we could have as much as we wanted throughout the dinner and when we went to the coat check they also packed two bags with additional bread.
Be the first to ReplyA Special Occasion place
In our case, my bday and our wedding anniversary. Romantic corner table, impeccable service, exquisite food thoughtfully paired with beverages and presented by their house Sommelier. Each dish so savory, delicious, delectable- we had no idea that 4 hrs had past by the time we finished our fabulous meal. Not for the faint of wallet- beverages before dinner, the meal, pairings and 20% gratuity was $1,500 for the two of us...and worth it.
Be the first to ReplyOur first 3-star restaurant in the US
We have been at different 3-star restaurants in Belgium and France, but Manresa was our first 3-star experience in the US. We really enjoyed ourselves. It was less formal than Alain Ducasse or le Pré Catalan in Paris, but that's a good thing
Attached, you'll find a picture of the menu. We tried some of the non-alcoholic aperitifs to start with, and we added cheese before we started the desserts
My top favorites were the oyster with caviar, the cioppino, the vegetable garden paired with the sour beer, and the squab. The combination of the onion and the truffle (added delicately in-between the layers of the onion) was great. The food and wine pairing was excellent. There vegetable dish paired with beer was a good choice too. We like being surprised, and Manresa delivered!
If someone at Manresa reads this, some minor points of critique: the wine that was served with the rib eye was promising on paper (Clos du Marquis, Saint-Julien, 1995), but somewhat disappointing in the glass. I expected a more potent wine with the rib eye.
I was also surprised that all wines were European, whereas you can find plenty of wines in California and Washington State that would also pair nicely with the dishes. Maybe we're not the average audience: being European, we can drink European wines every day ;-)
The coffee on the other hand was very American: you could see the bottom of your cup through the coffee. That's not how Europeans drink it. We like our coffees small and very black. I missed my espresso to finish my meal; my wife missed her cappuccino.
If you intend to visit Manresa, please don't let these minor suggestions influence your choice. You'll have an excellent night out if you choose this restaurant. We'll probably return in the summer to try the summer menu.
The Top
Every single other restaurant is....less. This is the top, in food, service and wine. All other restaurants I have been to are barbaric in comparison. The menu is a barrage of diverse tastes, from raw and cooked seafood, sometimes together, to savory meats and unexpected desserts. Unexpected, that's the word I am looking for: food combinations, tastes, presentations. Beyond creative, bordering on genius.
We experienced excellent, friendly service and a welcoming staff. The sommelier was right on with the delicious, excellent bottles he chose in the price range I suggested.
Look, I have been to the top; nothing else compares to Manresa.
Sparkling Water $12 a Bottle!
Very tasteful and creative melange of flavors, textures and colors. Great service. Only disappointment is when I received the bill the price for the 5 bottles of sparkling water the four of us consumed was $60!
Be the first to ReplyJust okay....
Let me start by saying great service. And the wines were out of this world. But the food was just okay. A few dishes stuck out but by the end, a bit dissapointed. Some dishes lacked flavor. Some lacked imagination and others just tried hard to make it work. Desert was a dud. The bread was probably the one thing I remember as being amazing but after $1000, I would expect to have more memories other than the bread.
Service was awesome. But just wish the food was as well. Lastly, and not being sensitive but I didn't like how the Chef came out and only greeted select individuals. To me, either make the time to meet everyone or don't do it all. It really takes away from the special nature of the meal if you are not one of the ones he cares to spend time with. An evening at Manresa should make you feel like you are on top of the world. When you walk out not thrilled with the food and on top of that, feeling like a second class citizen, that is a problem
An evening we'll never forget!
This is by far one of the most amazing food experiences of my life so far. My husband and I have never been to a Michelin starred restaurant, let alone a 3 star! It was a significant anniversary for us - so off we went!
The restaurant is beautiful, and I can't say enough good things about all the staff we encountered. They were friendly, professional, knowledgeable - Just brilliant.
And the food ...... oh my goodness. I'm not very brave with some seafood, but knew there would be an emphasis from other reviews I have read. So I thought - Hey, if i'm not going to like it here - you never will, so give it a go!
It was mind blowing. I tried the following for the first time ever - Capital Oyster, Bonito, Caviar, Geoduck, Squid, & Abalone (Not all in the same dish, might I add!) Just amazing.
When they offer you bread - try a piece of each one, it's incredible too.
I went with the wine pairings for the meal which was so lovely. One of the courses was even paired with a beer!
I love it when places are so well organised that everything looks effortless, but we all know it takes a LOT of effort to get to that stage!
The big downside for me is that I didn't get to try the "David" cocktail, so I guess we'll have to save up & go again! (Yay!)
Incredible
My wife and I visited Manresa in late August for her birthday and we had an incredible meal.
Hands down one of the best dinners of our lifes, and certainly in my top 2 of restaurants that I've visited this year, which includes "world's best" El Celler de Con Roca, the French Laundry, Alinea, Tickets, ABaC, Enigma, and many more.
Just a few weeks before our dinner here, we visited the French Laundry and, even though that was a lovely experience, our dinner at Manresa just blew that one out of the water.
We're both big foodies and Manresa was simply incredible.
To us, it could compete among the best restaurants in Spain, where my wife and I feel we had most of our "best dinners ever".
It's hard to give any critique on this place.
If I must, my only points would be that I wish the wine pourings from the wine pairing were a bit more generous. Now, it's not that they're not generous, because I asked for some wines for a second pour and they gladly complied without issues, but I wish I didn't have to ask.
Also, I found the cheese platter to be incredibly expensive. We didn't know the cheese platter would cost extra until the end of the meal when it arrived and the choices were explained (at which point, we already had a "good happy buzz" going on...). It was $30 per slice of cheese (and with slice I basically mean a bite), so a reasonable cheese plate for 2 would end up being at least $150. Probably over $200. Thus, almost the same price as "admission for one". That said - you may ask - how did this incredibly expensive cheese platter taste? INCREDIBLE. Best cheese plate I had in the US. (We're both from Europe and love cheese). Truly great cheese, so, again, I couldn't complain too much.
Finally, I didn't love the bread. EVERYTHING in the restaurant was so incredibly refined. The dishes were so beautiful. So elegant. So stunning in taste. Yet, the bread felt and tasted quite peasantry. To us, it wasn't elevated. Quite rough. And not in the best way. I know Manresa has a reputation for great bread, so perhaps the US taste of "great bread" may simply be different then ours.
All in, we had a fantastic evening and cannot wait to come back to taste the fall or winter menu!
For us, this is the best restaurant in California.
Worth its 3 stars, great service and some food surprises
Was there during a business trip to San Francisco.
Los Gatos is a upscale town south of San Francisco. Had a car and it took me almost 2 hours to get there. Was worth it.
It was not a problem that I was late, as the place was not 100% occupied. Many service staff, friendly and attentive, the bar manager came over to discuss and suggest non-alcoholic cocktails.
The menu was set, nice little starters. The courses started great: a oyster wrapped in slices of truffles and a tasty bowl of local caviar on a shellfish sauce toppled with crispy bits. Main dishes followed with sea urchins from Japan, a vegetable dish (a bit unsurprising) and a superb white fish from Japan on crab.
Squid, Squab and local beef followed in great quality.
The desserts were somehow standard, sorbet and chocolat, followed by the usual petit four.
Together it was enough to eat and tasty.
I give it a 8 on my personal scale for 3 stars.
