Gosh, how this place has gone down.
I have had dinner at Mar multiple times over the last few years. First went prior to the pandemic. The food and service was amazing. The menu was a gem and I really found it to be one of the nicest dining experiences I've had. Went at the end of 2022 and thought it was awesome. Well, I went back for the first time since a few weeks ago. Gone was the outstanding service. Whereas in the past, the waiters explained menu items and took time to make sure everything was okay, this go-around service was impersonal. I didn't even get cutlery with my dishes (a dining partner grabbed some from the serving table next to us). In addition, the menu has changed and it seems to be same menu as La Barra. Gone are the items that made this place special. I will not go back.

We came here on a Saturday night and it was extremely busy but we still got a table quickly. The server was nice and gave us her recommendations on dishes. Honestly everything we had was extremely tasty the only downside is the pricing is a bit much. Given the location its expected but you can definitely get just as good food for less elsewhere. The best dish we got was the lobster rice. It was such a warm comfort dish! I would go back for that dish alone and it comes with a whole lobster!

We really enjoyed little spain from our previous nyc trip so we came back. This area has a bunch if restaurants like eataly. The menu items overlap a lot, kind of like on a cruise ship. This time the food we ordered was on the oilier and the anchovies were too salty. But we made it work by eating smaller pieces and distributing the flavors. I would come back maybe during next next trip.
Be the first to ReplyOur first trip back to Mar in Mercado Little Spain since
Our first trip back to Mar in Mercado Little Spain since pandemic shutdown. Had started coming regularly in 2019-2020. It took a while for them to reopen. We happened to visit Little Spain and were pleasantly surprised, happy to have them back! Location is still fresh, lively, and beautiful with a casual elegance. The fish is still impeccably fresh and the dishes are all good. We picked up on a change in overall approach and menu offerings, so we asked our server. We were told they lost their top-tier chef during Covid. To adapt, they adopted a tapas-based format and reopened with a fast turnaround, pared-back menu. The prices overall are slightly higher, in addition to things like bread by request only for a small charge. However, our lunch was a great experience; delicious, fresh, thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. Mar was always on the pricey side, so possibly more of an indulgence than a regular stop for lunch or dinner. For the quality of the food, environment, service and experience, it's worth it. Definitely recommend Mar and any trip to Mercado Little Spain

Service was a 5/5! Our waitress was so friendly and provided great service, always getting us more water, pouring wine and bringing bread. She also gave us desserts for our wedding day :) The food itself was fresh. We got: - two different kinds of croquettes (salt fish and oxtail) which were both crispy and well fried without being two greasy - pulpo which was tender and the mashed potatoes were fluffy and buttery, - oxtail stew which was fall off the bone tender with fried potatoes sprinkled into the sauce - mussels - we wanted the tinned mussels but they gave us the wrong one, still tasty just not what we wanted - oysters were fresh, sweet and had a nice sauce on top - fresh spot prawns - only four per order but they were fresh and plump - wish they added an extra one for us as a table of 5 The prices were typical for New York seafood, the bill for 5 people with tip ended up about $60pp

This was a difficult restaurant to rate because it did some things exceptionally well but was brought down with very basic mistakes. I tried the crawfish paella, endive salad, and something with octopus (don't really remember).First, the positive. The endive salad was possibly the best salad I've had in my life. Amazing combination with the blueberries and grated Parmesan cheese. The octopus dish was also quite good but somewhat forgettable after the salad. Now, the problems. The paella was salty. Really salty. And I'm not normally someone who has that complaint. Not sure if I simply got unlucky or if that is the nature of the dish, but it's what held back the meal. The serving sizes were also a bit small for the price.

My girlfriend and I made 6:30PM reservations at Mar to celebrate Valentine's Day this year (it fell on a Friday) and had a great time! We checked in with the hostess and were seated very quickly even though it was a little bit busy. The waiter was very friendly and although I don't think he was a Spaniard, he pronounced everything spectacularly and understood when I ordered everything by name in my Spanish accent (it's Little Spain! I want it to be immersive lol!). We ordered Albariño (the ONLY wine to pair with Spanish seafood in my opinion!), the Gambas al Ajillo (which were 100x better than the same dish I had had at La Barra right outside the restaurant a couple of months earlier), the Rossejat, and the Pescado a la Plancha con Patatas Panadera. Everything was absolutely spectacular! We literally couldn't decide which main course we loved more as we were eating them simultaneously: the small noodle paella or the fried fish. For dessert we had the Mini Lionesas and the Arroz con Leche. Both were very good but we were pretty full so we couldn't finish! Overall, really enjoyed the dinner and can't wait to come back!
Be the first to ReplyThe hostess was a bit clumsy, with a tad tempered brash.
Uncalled for, but I ignored her because I had pulpo on my mind. Rainy cold day, the place was all mine... Kinda. Just not a heck of a lot of people. Brandon was my host for the afternoon. WICKED expensive for lunch, but WHO CARES? Truffle special. End of story. Black squid ink croquettas. DANG! One of the best things I've ever had! With an exquisite $20 albarino. OH MY. I wanted pulpo a la gallega but was swayed by 3 grams of black truffle - fresh black truffle shaved so daintily on the bed of pulpo, potato and sexy Picual olive oil. DROP MIKE.Pricey. Forget it if you are penny pinching. JUST GIVE IN. Jose's brother runs the place. You will remember the food for a long time.
Be the first to ReplyI planned my dad's birthday party at the restaurant thought
I planned my dad's birthday party at the restaurant thought it was a more upscale place given the steep price. I was very disappointed. The place feels like a part of food court with just a curtain separate little Spain food court and bars. So it was very noise. The quality of food is a subpar. We had four parties at the dinner and waiter recommended prefix for $65 per person. But he didn't mention it will be a family style so we all share one dish. The first dish was mussels and there were only eight of them total for four to share. We realized it' would be a mistake so we canceled the prefix and order a few apps and entrees. All the portions are small for the price. And we all still hungry after the dinner. I am so disappointed and this is supposed to be a happy Birthday dinner for my dad and it's ruined. Will never return.
Be the first to ReplyFried fish tapas was excellent, our favorite thing!
Fried fish tapas was excellent, our favorite thing! Scallops with romesco served ice cold, not great. Beans with clams super tasty! Drinks were creative and excellent. Unusual combos that were a delight. Our waiter left for 20 minutes and never returned so we had to stop someone else to get our check and leave. Too bad as we would have ordered more. Be prepared, very expensive and you will leave hungry as tapas is only 2 or three bites.

This is my happy place before returning to the airport for a flight back home. The tuna tartar and mussels were two highlights today and I really appreciate the efforts of this staff who turn out some amazing food. Thank you.

It was just perfect for me. The squid rice was cooked in an individual- sized cast iron pan, just looking mellow and pure when it was still unadorned with five pieces of good-looking grilled calamares. This dish came with a serving of aioli, recommended to be mixed into the squid rice for the ultimate finish of the most delicious meal I've had this year - counting back 12 months, ok? While I waited, I was given a variety of olives, all tasting nutty and almost buttery. Check out the shiny and hammered bowls olives were served in: quite beautiful. No, I did not get any bread. Was it because I only ordered one dish and a coke? As I was seated by the Chef's counter, I've seen some dishes being prepared for their final touches, before they land into some fortunate diner. Clearly, it was a well organized and well trained team. And when I go back, I will definitely try some grilled fish and of course, the squid rice for the second time around. And maybe some bread?
Be the first to ReplyEl Mar may not be for you if you are hungry.
When we arrived, we were told that it with would be a 25-45 minute wait to sit at the bar. Uummm ok. I will say that our hostess was really nice and managed to find us a spot at the bar pretty quickly. The portions here are pretty petite . . . for the price. Honestly, the food was not THAT great to justify the price. Also, the service (with the exception of our hostess) was not that great. Maybe struggle service is the theme of Mercado because I've experienced subpar service at other places in this glorified food court. I'd say that if you visit El Mar, just have a couple glasses of wine and bounce.
Be the first to ReplyFinally, I've been waiting to try this place for months!
Finally, I've been waiting to try this place for months! Perfect time to catchup with my old colleague. Reserved our table for two, the restaurant has a chic ocean vibe (hence Mar lol) which I found to be really relaxing. You have the option of sitting at the bar which has a view of the gifted chefs while they're at work or dining at a table. The experience was wonderful from start to finish, I had to change our reservation since we ran a little late, the hostess was so sweet, made our changes without a hitch. When I arrived first she smiled when I gave her my name and was so cordial as she walked me to our table. Since I arrived first I ordered a glass of Cava which was perfectly poured. We started with the Tun rojo balfego, made with Bluefin tuna, served with mini toast.... all I can say is wow!! Both of us did not want to stop and when it was gone, we could have ordered another! For our mains, my friend ordered the squid with black ink, beautifully prepared. When our waiter delivered it, he says gently may I serve you! I just love great customer service, both my friend and I giggled well of course and thanks so much! I enjoy eating out a lot, and waitressed throughout undergrad. It's takes great skill to make to someone feel at home and our waiter did just that throughout our entire experience. I decided on the pescado a la plancha con patatas panadera, incredible! Beautifully prepared, buttery with a light crisp beneath it sits delicate, thinly sliced potatoes!! This was crazy, taking a bite of the fish with the potatoes was like a piece of heaven! We of course had to try dessert so we decided to share the mini lionesas. Perfect to share, served with a molten chocolate sauce.... whew obviously I will need to be come back soon! Mar was lovely from start to finish. Enjoy your experience!
