Maya Charleston Reviews from The Last Year
A Very Good Restaurant With One Large Failing
We had dinner in the outdoor area at Maya. The food was excellent, and the service top-notch, but there was one large failing. The music was far too loud, and this applied to the whole restaurant, both the indoor areas and the outdoor area where we had our dinner. It was a so loud that one could not carry on a conversation in normal tones, but had to almost shout. Unfortunately, this distracted from the experience so much that we could not recommend it for a nice couples dinner.
Cute, upscale Mexican restaurant serving delicious food.
Plants all around, bright colors, and candle lighting provide for a calm atmosphere. Our server was friendly offering suggestions on the menu. Great spot to check out!
If I could give this restaurant six stars, I would.
We happened to walk in and were shocked at how delicious the food was and how exceptional the service was. It was two of my friends birthday and the staff went above and beyond to celebrate them. We got a round of complimentary shots, complimentary desserts, and they even brought over a little gift (face mask, lotion, lip balm). We started our meal with the dip trio and it was great! I had the Crunchwrap with chicken which was super yummy and big portions. Ended with the complimentary churro cake. It was DELICIOUS! Can't recommend this place enough!
Such a relaxed atmosphere, our server Emma was so easy
Such a relaxed atmosphere, our server Emma was so easy going and accommodating, and they have THE BEST Brussel sprouts in Charleston! Would def return!
Maya Mexican Restaurant, a hit and a miss
Took my daughter here while visiting Charleston for her 50th birthday. We started off with the appetizer trio (queso, salsa and guacamole) along with chips. They were each very tasty and went well with the delicious margarita. Its when we ordered the soft tacos with ground beef that it all fell apart. The ground beef consisted of hard pellets and had absolutely no taste. The soft taco itself was very flimsy and hard to eat. So go for a happy hour and enjoy!

We had a great time and everything tasted delicious! The place is gorgeous and the servers were really attentive. Highly recommend.
I thought the service was great, particularly the bar
I thought the service was great, particularly the bar tender. He deserves 5 stars, we asked a ton of questions and he was so patient, and nice in-spite of being busy on a Friday night. He overheard me saying that I didn't care for the wine I ordered and volunteered to take it of the bill and make something that I would actually enjoy. That was an example of attentive customer service. The food had an authentic taste and flavor. The appetizer that we selected was guacamole and chips it was pretty good. My entree was the Carne Asada Crunch Wrap which was very good. The beef was tender and all of the flavors worked well together. My only suggestion would be to tone down the salt just a bit. It was little bit too much for me. Overall I would likely order that again to share and try one of the small plates to go with it in the future. It was pretty busy for a Friday night and there was a short wait for our table so we opted for the bar which was fine primarily due to the great service. The atmosphere was dimly lit inside and it would be a nice little date spot.
Very good food.
The skillet queso was delicious!!! Very cute ambiance and service was good. The server and manager were accommodating when there was some confusion with orders. Drinks were good also. Very reasonable prices overall
Worst Mexican food I have ever had.
Go to Azul 1/2 the price and so much better. The guacamole was terrible. Salsa was good. Service was great. None of the food was anything like we expected. Nasty.
An unknown gem in Charleston!! Ceviche is a must try! Chips
An unknown gem in Charleston!! Ceviche is a must try! Chips are served warm, don't see that too often. Same with the Guac and chips. Bartender, from Long Island (never got his name) was great. Atmosphere was cool, very chill and not pretentious. Overall service was great. Definitely a must stop during your bar crawl of Charleston.
I came in without a reservation, they were able to
I came in without a reservation, they were able to accommodate me and I sat at the bar. I ordered Carne Asada fajitas, they were really good, the salsa that was served with it was delicious, I just wish I had some chips or something more to put the salsa on. I'm from Southern California and I'm super picky about my salsa. I was also given complementary Churros. They were warm and delicious, they had a drizzle of caramel and chocolate on them, but I would have liked that more as a dipping sauce because the churros were so good with just the cinnamon and sugar. Lastly, the staff was so kind. Just genuine and good at their jobs. I would recommend visiting here if you are in Charleston.

We made reservations at Maya for a date night with our friends! We loved the food. My husband got the crunch wrap which is HUGE! Neither of us were expecting that! He said it was fantastic! I had the Tacos Al Pastor, love there is many options for GF here! My husband had the Speak the Devil cocktail and I had the Gucci Mane Go zero proof cocktail both were fantastic! The chocolate cake dessert was perfect! The server was great, the atmosphere is nice and small, little upper scale Mexican for Downtown. Parking is limited to garage but just a short walk! We only had one complaint I had a reservation like 1-1/2 weeks in advance for inside as our friends had their infant with us and when we arrived they tried to seat us outside, and we overheard the group in front of us get in without a reservation seated inside. We thought that wasn't fair when we specifically had a reservation for inside because of the cold, they eventually seated us inside but it took 10 minutes before they figured it out.
Great find! Great food, atmosphere and service!
Great drinks, service and food! This was a great find! We stumbled across Maya and loved everything about it. Reasonably priced, great atmosphere!
Overpriced for what you get
Overpriced for the quality of food that you get. We went during happy hour and ordered the quest and chips for an appetizer. The chips seemed to be homemade- corn tortillas cut and fried. But they were overcooked and over seasoned- tasted like Fritos. The queso itself was pretty good. Our main dish was the crunchwrap, which was misleading as it was not crunchy at all. It was stuffed with rice, steak, and charro beans, then fried with cheese on one side of it. It was very greasy and soggy. After eating half I couldnโt finish the rest without removing the filling from the tortilla and eating it by itself. The tortilla with the cheese on it was just too much. We didnโt like the taste after eating the first half. The steak inside was good, but that was all I enjoyed of the wrap. The restaurant was also very dark- hard to see what we were eating.
Amazing and celiac friendly
Food was amazing. Plenty of gluten free options including desserts. Staff was friendly and helpful. Had a wonderful time!!
Good Different Mexican!
The queso and guac was excellent as well as the margiโs and The Burn the Ships! We all ordered Crunchwrap Supreme. All were very good!!! The service was a little slow so we ordered food and drinks at the same time.
