We've dined here several times over the years.

3/5 by πŸ‘» @Na W. on 09/15/2025

There's nothing really bad and the service was professional and attentive. However, on our most recent visit, the dishes seemed more like bar tapas and were overly salty and basic. The flavors didn't stand out or mesh together as well as they have on our previous visits. The overall flavor was either salt or blandness, not flavorful as it has been in the past. Our chicken meatballs were full of gristle way too salty. The pita, on the other hand, was light, fluffy, warm and delicious. We liked the flavor and combo of a salad of peaches and tomatoes (and strangely, potatoes?, I think...it was really dark and hard to see..anyway...something not peach and not tomato), but it presented as, giant chunks just kind of hanging out in a shallow sauce. Overall, we felt like this was a bar scene more than a restaurant scene, and this time, the food didn't seem to shine. I finished with a cookie and it was super basic. Didn't taste housemade or dessert-y. Supposedly tahini was involved, but it tasted like a prepackaged cookie you get at the corner store. The ambiance is very noisy, hard to have a conversation. Also, we got there around 8:30ish on a Saturday night and by nine, I felt like they were winding down. It didn't effect the service and they nicely checked in for last calls on entrees when the time came, but there was a lot of hustle and bustle with the kitchen staff that gave the impression that their energy and focus was on getting an early jump on cleaning up shutting down, and getting the heck outta there...a lot of hurried back and forth past our table was unsettling, along with the smashing and clanking of cleaned cutlery being tossed in the bins instead of placed quietly. In a nutshell, we just didn't feel the love on the plate this time. It felt like a conveyor belt and not food that was as carefully prepared and presented as we've felt in the past. Again, nothing really bad...but not remarkable, either. Basic. Noisy. The chairs in the bar are really uncomfortable. Nothing about the visit said, linger, enjoy. But again, the service was very attentive in spite of everything, and we appreciated that.

This was our last stop in our Portland food tour, and it was delish. Peter was our server and very helpful and knowledgable. We had several dishes on the menu and enjoyed them all. The ambiance is low lit and romantic but vibey. Quality of ingredients is evident and presentation and taste were on point. Our favorite was the home made pita bread, and lambchops. The cauliflower main was also flavorful! We loved how personal Peter's approach was, he also left us a list of local recommendations, which was stellar. Thanks for the exceptional experience! Must try if you want upscale mediterranean food in a casual but elegant space.

The lamb chops were excellent and probably the highlight of the meal. The hummus was also very good, creamy and flavorful. The radicchio salad fell short and didn't stand out. The corn was underwhelming and not something I'd order again. Staff service was mediocre and could have been friendlier or more attentive. Overall, I'd rate it 4 stars because a few dishes were truly worth coming back for, but the experience as a whole left room for improvement.

Tucked inside a reclaimed warehouse MEC serves highly

4/5 by πŸ‘» @Pamela L. on 08/14/2025

Tucked inside a reclaimed warehouse MEC serves highly flavorful small plate dishes. John Gorman is known to every connoisseur in this town for bringing outstanding cuisine in a minimalist environment. I ordered the chef's tasting menu. The watermelon and gigante bean salad was adorned with fresh dill, mint and shallots. It was a refreshing treat filled with creativity using contrasting flavors. The king salmon tartare was quick to disappear. The lightly flavored fish let the fresh fish shine through. It was delicate and tender . Beef bacon wrapped dates with an almond center provided a lovely contrast of sweet, salty and savory. The bacon would have better served the dish if it was thinly sliced. Because it was thick, it had a chewy texture that did not serve to compliment the date. The hummus was spectacular. They paired it beautifully with freshly baked pita bread. Because we had someone at the table who suffered from celiac disease, we also had cucumbers for dipping. The grilled shrimp were slightly overcooked. We were provided with three meat entrΓ©es. We were served the grilled octopus, chicken and Greek lamb chops. The lamb and octopus stood out as a "must try " dishes. They nailed the flavor temperature and texture on those. The potatoes and the greens were nice additions. Both were prepared to enhance their core ingredient . We finished with almonds encased in the finest powdered sugar. It felt like a cloud of sweetness was dissolving on my tongue. I didn't give this restaurant five stars because of the noise level and the service. It felt like our waiter was rushed. He didn't provide detailed explanations of the food preparation. When our plates were dirty, he didn't exchange them readily. He didn't interact with us in a friendly manner. Two children were seated next to me. They were well behaved, but sound carries in the restaurant. Finding a parking space close to the restaurant was challenging. I don't mind walking, but there's a certain level of vagrancy around the area. I recommend this restaurant as a one time experience. I return repeatedly like I did to Tasty and Alder.

.the portion sizes. Service, very pleasant. Food , very tasty. Atmosphere, a little noisy but doable. The portions are pretty criminal. A $48 Branzino that was not enough to feed one person, with maybe 2 tablespoons on couscous. A $36 Moroccan chicken that was about the size of a half of a Cornish game hen. I had to make a sandwich when I got home after spending $300. Cannot recommend .

The food absolutely blew me away! The grilled octopus is a MUST order and the lamb hummus was delicious as well. Also ordered the watermelon salad; wish it came with a bit more watermelon and less beans but it was super tasty. The homemade pita was so soft and tasty, we ordered an extra. Disappointing service

4/5 by πŸ‘» @nutmeg8629 on 07/05/2025

Pacing of the meal and service overall was poor. We had two drinks and each one took 10-15 minutes to arrive. Meanwhile courses all came on top of each other. Dishes are family style and should be served consecutively or in appropriate groupings not all on the table at once - we felt rushed and the table over crowded. Food was good (across the board but the service issues took away from the experience.

5/5 by πŸ‘» @WymeswoldOFB on 09/30/2024

A really popular and busy place for a midweek night. We chose seven mixed plates between the four of us, which was plenty. We went for shrimp and lots of veggie options - all very different, interesting recipes and nicely cooked. I had an Oakshire beer, which I think was the best US beer I've had. Great atmosphere, only slightly marred by the loud mouthed guy on the next table, who clearly thought he was the most important person in the universe - not the restaurant's fault!.

Great experience, lots of new flavors

5/5 by πŸ‘» @Patrick D on 08/05/2024

Our group of four recently tried the Mediterranean Exploration Company for an early dinner It was a great experience. In addition to the elegant indoor space, there is a large outdoor patio extending into the street which is where we ate. Lots of shade from the actual building but entertaining to watch all the pedestrians go by. Our server was friendly and prompt. The food is actually a bunch of small plates. For our group of four, our waitress suggested we get 6-8 plates. Ours came out two dishes at a time. We got eight and all left feeling full. We started with the fried calamari. These were lightly breaded and served over a spicy tomato sauce. This was a big hit for all of us. I enjoyed the Labneh with Fried Artichokes. I'd never had fried artichokes, the texture was a bit dry and needed the yogurt-like labneh. This dish was the most disliked in our group. Next came the crispy lamb hummus. Creamy, smooth, luscious hummus with a smattering of crispy lamb on top. This was a huge hit with everyone. It only comes with a single pita, so be sure to order more. The Watermelon Salad which was chunks of seasoned watermelon with some tahini dressing. It had urfa pepper, similar to black pepper, which I had never had before. Our third round was the Blistered Shishito Peppers and the Baked Feta and Blackberries. Our table was split on the Shishito dish. I love shishitos and really enjoyed the thick pistachio puree it was served with. On the other hand, the baked feta was my least favorite dish. It was super sweet and should probably be considered a dessert. Our final two dishes with the Moroccan Brick Chicken and the Hangar Steak. The chicken was moist and flavorful served with an amazing arugula and pecorino salad that I highly recommend. The hangar steak was also delicious and was served with potatoes and fried capers. It was a really fun experience, and I had the opportunity to try a lot of spices and flavors I'm not that familiar with. It was somewhat pricey, but the food was great, and I'd happily return.

A rare five star review

5/5 by πŸ‘» @Chicagonative_7 on 08/03/2024

I reserve five stars for but a few establishments and this place qualifies! Excellent flavors and spicing took things to a higher level. In Chicago we have lots of great Mediterranean cuisine and MEC would fare very well there. Wrapped dates, lamb humus, falafel and meatballs…. Some a bit hot for a couple but fine for me! The lamb kabobs and lamb chops were very good although the kabobs were more like a kefta kabob than chunks of lamb. We needed more warm pitas and were surprised they didn’t come with the falafel and the humus….. we also enjoyed the rice dish as another side. It was a bit much to finish but the flavors were excellent. My only complaint was my gin and tonic with lime came with β€˜tonic flavored with rosemary and hibiscus’ which is definitely NOT the same thing but our server promptly offered to replace it. His service was also top tier. Definitely worthy of its high ratings, I’m glad we came here!

Just celebrated our 9 year anniversary and wow!! Food, service, drinks and atmosphere were all 5 star. Food: Radicchio salad was our favorite! But the sesame mousse was so good my husband who doesn't like dessert ate most of it! We were SO FULL because everything was so tasty we couldn't stop eating. Service: our server Cookie was so kind and knowledgeable. Great menu recommendations and the entire staff ensured we had what we needed and wanted. Drinks: Cookie recommended the exact wine I was craving. Hubby said the old fashioned was delicious also! Atmosphere: lively, busy but not rushed, and every staff member we encountered were so kind and attentive. They all wished us a happy anniversary and genuinely cared about our experience. This was honestly one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time. Couldn't recommend them enough and can't wait to come back!! Incredible.

4/5 by πŸ‘» @Raisa S. on 07/06/2024

Absolutely delicious Mediterranean food! Based on my experience, the vegetarian dishes are the forte here. We ordered: 1. Fennel Salad - crisp and refreshing, and the fennel gives that different anise-flavor. I also enjoyed the oranges and candied almonds for extra flavor and texture. 2. Roasted Eggplant Dip - if you're a babaganoush fan, this is for you! 3. Fasolakia Hummus - this is a *MUST*. Even the pickiest eater in our party wanted to lick the plate clean! 4. Spiced Maitake Mushrooms - another *MUST ORDER*! The mushrooms were prepared perfectly with a slight crispy char and the black garlic sauce was out of this world!! I wish I could have bought a jar of it! 5. Grilled Octopus - this was good, but I expected more from the dish than just two pieces of octopus, one of which was a bit overcooked and rubbery. 6. Adana Lamb Kebab - Pretty good and definitely not game-y I also enjoyed the Arak and a Hard Place cocktail and the Turkish coffee for dessert was very authentic and delicious. The rhubarb dessert we ordered was good too! Sit outside on a warm evening and enjoy!

"Exploring" is going somewhere unfamiliar.

5/5 by πŸ‘» @Lisa R. on 07/04/2024

It doesn't usually include the urge to lick the plates, but maybe it should, especially if you are going to eat here. The flavors were a surprisingly rich combination of the unexpected, but in a delightful way. They had a lot of vegetarian options , and we decided to nibble our way across the menu, family style. My suggestions? Try the salt roasted beets -perfectly roasted and lounging on a pool of tahina with herbs, Fennel salad- with a slightly citrusy vinagarette and sweet almonds for crunch, Labneh -topped with crispy artichokes and a sauce that perfectly balanced spicy with flavorful fruit over the base of tangy yogurt. Other top picks: spiced mushrooms on garlic spiced lentils, or the spinach & cheese Boureka. Any negatives?: our whole meal came with one single small piece of pita bread for three people to share, and a single small extra piece of bread is $3 each. For our $150 bucks, they could have provided extra bread. Would I go back? Oh yes!

I was not expecting the food to be this good - this place

5/5 by πŸ‘» @Rima Z. on 06/23/2024

I was not expecting the food to be this good - this place nails Mediterranean nibbles! Service was warm, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Interior and exterior are clean and modern. But it's all about the food. We kept ordering because it was so good... Drinks - my Turkish delight was terrific. But the white Negroni? Perfect for a hot summery day. Food - you wouldn't think olives would be much to write about. But these were so plump and juicy, well marinated, and since the were warm, so flavorful. The hummus was creamy with just the right amount of tahini and crispy lamb bits. The pita was warm and pillowy (we ordered another one to sop up all of the sauces). The falafel was crisp with a tender crumb, not dry like so many are. And the zhug was full of bright flavor. We had to order another one. Octopus was perfectly cooked and the oil needed to be stopped up with pita; it would have been a shame to waste it. The chicken meatballs were also crisp with a tender interior. The eggplant relish with slivered almonds was served cold/room temp, but did not deteriorate from the meatballs whatsoever. . I'll be back... you should go too!

Wonderful Dinner Sitting at the Bar by the Grill

5/5 by πŸ‘» @LonestarSpartan on 06/09/2024

We made an early reservation and when we arrived they asked where would like to be seated. Some corner counter seats were available right by the grill which is our favorite place to sit when given the opportunity at a restaurant. We love watching the cooks! We sat next to 2 gentlemen who were regulars and their food looked great. We inquired into what they were eating (they were still on appetizers) and they said the Raddichio Salad and the Crispy Lamb Hummus. We ordered both and both were outstanding. Unlike our neighbors, those 2 dishes were enough food for the 2 of us, so we failed to order an entree. We had a nice bottle of Vermentino from Italy which was also great. Our server was Matthew and when my wife told him that she was allergic to bell peppers, he looked at all the items on the menu and made notes on what other ingredients, not listed, were in each dish. Outstanding and beyond the call of duty. Other members of the staff also visited with us and gave us recommendations. Overall, a delightful experience! Would highly recommend a visit. Should make a reservation as the place quickly filled up after we were seated.

Soggy fennel salad & incredibly salty crisp lamb

3/5 by πŸ‘» @L Callahan on 05/27/2024

Was referred to this place by three different people, so had high expectations. Busy on Memorial weekend, but they found me a seat at their high top tables at the back of the restaurant. Ordered the fennel & orange & almond salad to start, which was really overdressed (and drowning in liquid), which resulted in limp fennel, but the flavors were good. The crispy lamb atop their hummus was incredibly oversalted(!) and I really tried to get past that, but after three bites I asked to substitute their plain hummus dish, and I’m really glad that I did. Server was very pleasant, and even brought me a new warm pita to accompany my second hummus dish. The presentation of their hummus is really beautiful, and the flavor combinations of the tahini, olive oil, and spices work beautifully. The thick β€œIsraeli style” pita is superb, and their portions are generous (though expensive). Given the many options for Mediterranean food in Portland, I don’t feel compelled to return.

One of my absolute favorite dinners on this trip! Skipped

5/5 by πŸ‘» @Terry K. on 03/15/2024

One of my absolute favorite dinners on this trip! Skipped the drinks and just opted for water. For food we shared the following items: Beef-Bacon Wrapped Date: This was the most underwhelming item of the night, the combination of flavors and textures were too one-dimensional. I think an added element would have really elevated this dish but somethings is missing... Crispy Lamb Hummus: WOW this was so good, the flavors, the textures, wow I just wish they gave two pitas or some cucumbers with this cause one pita is not enough. Fried Brussel Sprouts: So addicting to eat, the spices and sauce used paired so well together Moroccan Brick Chicken: Moist flavorful chicken with a delicious arugula salad, so simple but so necessary for the table Grilled Octopus: Cooked to perfection and seasoned nicely, if I see octopus on the menu I order it Warm Pistachio Cake: a simple cake but could do with less white chocolate Service was okay, we barely saw our server after we ordered but other staff was friendly. We sat at the counter so we could see them preparing the food which was a cool experience. The ambiance is dark and cozy, would be great for a date night.

If a restaurant can get me to eat lamb and actually ENJOY it?! Then you really got somethin good. Came here for the first time on a Friday night and it was worth all the hype. The dishes are small plates - which I love - so keep in mind that you'll need to order quite a few depending on how hungry you are. I came for dinner with a friend and we started with the Hummus abu Hassan and their fresh baked pita... omg... I'm not even a hummus fan yall, but this one was amazing. Then we ordered the Pan Roasted Salmon and the Hawaij Spiced Carrots - both were perfect. And last but not least, the Lamb Chops. INSANE. I don't like lamb and will never go out of my way to order it or even try a bite when my husband orders it anywhere. But their lamb chops here, I will come back for. I usually will take pictures of my food to post on here, but I was truly enjoying my meal so much that I didn't take a single photo. Maybe next time! LOL

The octopus is my favorite but you can't go wrong with anything really. Try the lamb hummus if that's your thing - so good!! And the staff are always so nice.

Food was good though surprisingly bland.

Service was fine. The noise level, between the thumping music and the crowd, made it impossible to enjoy or linger over dinner.

Very average

3/5 by πŸ‘» @James B on 12/28/2023

We came to this restaurant with friends based on reviews. Pretentious and unimaginative pricey food. They couldn’t split the bill for some reason. There are other places with better ambiance and food in Portland.

Interesting Cuisine

5/5 by πŸ‘» @Dick L on 12/08/2023

A very popular spot in the Pearl District of Portland. They serve small plates to be shared, lots of yogurt dishes and of course Mediterranean style foods. We had a lot of them, but the one outstanding dish (for me) was the octopus, a long grilled tenacle brought on a platter! We also had the chicken meatballs, salt roasted beets, eggplant dip and other dishes. The most difficult part of visiting this restaurant is the parking in the Pearl. We found a lot a few blocks away and squeezed our car into one of their small sized but large priced spaces. Then walked in the rain to the restaurant. Oh, well that is the Pearl for you. But it was worth the effort.

Hands down one of the best restaurants around

5/5 by πŸ‘» @NM_RR on 11/29/2023

I have spent a lot of time in kitchens over the last forty years. I have come to have high expectations in uppity things like texture, harmony amid contrasts, the element of surprise, the exotic amid the familiar, presentation, and quality of ingredients. Normally, my expectations are disappointed. We cook at home more often than we go out. From that background, I offer my unqualified praise to Chef Burgess and his staff. This place is a gem. Everything they put on the table illustrates their excellence as a team. Each dish has a truly unique character. Each delights with surprises that come from dedication to the craft and a certain genius, not chance. Each is sumptuous. Each offers the unexpected. You can taste the thoughtfulness, the imagination, the vision. What a joy to eat at a place like this. On top of that, the place is unpretentious and warm and the service is lovely. MEC reminds us of what a restaurant can be. Put it on your list of top restaurants in Portland. It is now on mine.

Great dinner experience in Portland!!!

5/5 by πŸ‘» @ghotai on 08/01/2023

Excellent meal!!! I was there with my wife and daughter, and we started out with the crispy lamb hummus and the chicken meatballs for appetizers, both of which were great. My wife and daughter shared the chermoula rubbed shrimp and the hanger steak, with rave reviews from both, while I enjoyed the Adana lamb kebab. I had a cocktail--"When Doves Cry" -- which was spicy and perfect for me! Service was good but not over-attentive.

Each posting on AppointmentTrader shows you which user submitted it and along with that provides a trackrecord of that user which indicates how much experience the user has and how many percent of their transactions resulted in them issuing a refund.

If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to Mediterranean Exploration Company Portland at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the Mediterranean Exploration Company Portland page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.

That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.

Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.

Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.

2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* FamousStation67, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* FamousStation67 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to FamousStation67 for any questions Peter may have as FamousStation67 user fills the bid.

3.) Finding the Reservation
* FamousStation67 now uses their connections at Mediterranean Exploration Company Portland to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If FamousStation67 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.

4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, FamousStation67 receives the $200 reward which is credited to FamousStation67's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at Mediterranean Exploration Company Portland!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
