Overrated and not worth it
I came with high expectation. But I have to say it is very average. Soup was very heavy on garlic. Environment is noisy. With one ramen (+1 topping), and two drinks, I paid 43 dollars and I would expect more with this price.
Be the first to ReplyTerribly over-rated & expensive
Average ramen at best. Interesting broth and noodles but super salty. We also ordered the A5 sashimi, the pork chasiu bowl and the chicken karaage on the side. For ramen, we ordered the GKO (Garlic Knock Out). The A5 sashimi is a waste of $ 12... Two thin sliced of beef on a knob of rice with an over the top sauce on the side. The chasiu is ok. The karaage is full of batter... Not sure what the rave is about. Definitely not coming back. BTW - they automatically add 20% service charge and you order the food from the app!
Be the first to ReplyWill be back if mochi ramen still on their menu
I love their mochi ramen and chicken karrage. I did order a side of garlic to boost my ramen flavor. However, they charged $5 for a tiny cup of hot green tea that can’t be refilled…Eh… so don’t order drinks from them, they’re Expensive!! If the line isn’t too long, this is a good ramen place for you to try.
Be the first to ReplyMichelin Star - Period!
Their Michelin Star should speak for the quality, enough said. Easily one of the Top 3 ramen restaurants in the Bayarea! Great food + Great service!

Best ramen in San Francisco, and in fact a totally complete elevated delicious ramen any where in the world and any way you cut it. It’s worth the lines, and deserves that Michelin recommendation. If only one thing is to be said that is to be known, is there is some shadiness in this side of town where the restaurant is located and it’s not their fault. Hope they open more branches in the city.

Michelin noted ramen spot with a line that can take up to an hour. Came here for a late dinner after the airport with two other friends, and we were all ravenous. You place your order on your phone via the QR code at each table and pay (credit card/Apple Pay accepted). Indoor high top and bar seating only, no outdoor options. They have vegan options. I got the vegan GKO which came with a lot of toppings. The broth is very thick (almost curry-like in its consistency). It was very rich and flavor, and the food came out in less than 10 minutes. The noodles were thick and chewy, with a nice springiness. No hot water was available but they give you ice water.
Be the first to ReplySurprisingly Mediocre . . . Definitely NOT Deserving of a Michelin Anything
The first thing you notice when entering Mensho on Geary is how dirty it is. Having been to dozens of ramen establishments in Tokyo, even the seediest ones in Roppongi at 3:00 am were cleaner than Mensho when it opened at 5:00 pm. Very un- Japanese. The noodles. Well, that’s a matter of personal preference. The noodles are thick and curly here at Mensho. They have a really nice chew to it. My preference would be the thin noodles like you would find at an ippudo or Ichiran. But many prefer the thicker noodles. So that does not figure into my review. My primary issue is with the soup, or more specifically with the presentation of the soup. First, they give way too little soup. In our case, and we ordered three bowls, the soup only filled half of the bowl, and we could see the noodles sticking out. It was nothing like the photos where the soup fills 2/3 to 3/4 of the bowl and completely covers the noodles. The main event of a ramen is the soup. And here at Mensho, they were so stingy with the soup that it tainted the overall experience of enjoying the full flavor of the soup on the noodles. Second, the soup was not piping hot. It really should be super hot, nearly to the point of boiling. Instead it was verging on the side of warm. As a result, the whole experience was wrong. It was the incorrect ratio of soup to noodles. Unfortunately, ramen perfection is in the details. And the details were all wrong the day we ate at Mensho in SF. In terms of the soup, it was good. But definitely not great. I would not wait in line for anything more than 10-15 minutes to eat at this restaurant. Anything more will end up disappointing you. Bottom line, Mensho is mediocre as a ramen establishment and should not be awarded any Michelin mention for the branch here in SF even if the main restaurant in Tokyo received a star. Onishi-san should make a trip to SF soon to instill some discipline into his restaurant here in SF so as not to taint his reputation further.

Get there early, before it opens, as there will be a line to get in. We were there on a Monday about 10 minutes before they opened and we were already back far enough to be let in after the first group filled the available seats. Turnover is pretty quick, though, so the wait wasn’t long. One of us had the fantastic lamb entree. Powerful flavors which all mixed together and balanced. The other had G.K.O. which was great but didn’t achieve the balance or level of interest of the lamb dish. You order and pay on the phone so there is very little interaction with the staff but service was prompt and friendly for the small interaction we did have. We also had two appetizers, the corn and the spicy corn, which were very good but note that “spicy” means spicy.

get the vegan ramen!! soooo creamy good the only thing is the ordering system is kinda annoying internet was really slow my friend had the matcha ramen i had a sip and that was good too def worth the wait
Be the first to ReplyReally Michelin???
We did a 45min line to enter and ordered two tori paitan ramens. It tasted like corpses, nothing to do with a real Japanese ramen (have been there a few times). The meat was raw, the broth was dense, and the aftertaste was hideous. Two hours later I got diarrhea. My body just repelled that dead soup you gave me. I honestly don’t understand the Michelin awards and that urge of everybody to eat there.
Don’t go, it’s disgusting.
How good can ramen be???
Well...I have had my share of ramen in my life. They are all generally good. So when I was told about this place. I thought, how good can it be? I arrived about 15mins before opening. I was still stuck in line for 90mins before I was seated. We didn't try to be cute and just order the standard soy sauce based and the chicken-based soup. WOW...that soup...it's amazing. The layers of flavour kept coming after the first sip. It is hard to describe and you have to try it for yourself. My ONLY complaint was the addon egg...it WAS NOT warm and runny as expected....it was overcooked and COLD. don't add it. However, it is not a knock on the soup...so just don't add the egg.

Right on 627 Geary Street, just a few blocks from Union Square is a hidden of a gem, if you're into ramen. I arrived 25 minutes early before dinner service at 5pm and there was already a line about 20 people deep. A definite early arrival is a must, as you will be waiting a lot longer. If you miss the first seating. Fortunately, I just managed to get in at the first seating at the bar which gives you a view of the cooks behind a kitchen.
While you are waiting in line, I highly suggest that you look up the menu on their website, if you haven't been here before, so that you can put in your order when the server arrives to your seat. Service here is on point. Even though the kitchen gets hit from the get go, you definitely can tell by how calm, collective, and efficient the service is from the front of the house to the back of the house. The pace in the kitchen is nothing but seamless.
I ordered the popular dish - tori paitan with the enoki chips as an appetizer and, of course, a Sapporo draft beer. An essential to the ramen course meal. It just so happened that I brought one of the black winter truffles that I got from the farmer's market that day. A nice shaving of truffles always goes well with a rich creamy broth ramen like the tori paitan ramen.
I am definitely looking forward to going back before I leave to try out the shio ramen and the other dishes. So, if you are in Downtown San Francisco and are craving ramen, this is the place to be.
