Been a Millenium-ite since 1994-1995. The original location, on the ground floor of the old Abigail Hotel on McAllister Street, was quaint and loaded with character. Though at times a bit cramped, the several rooms made for a European feel. When Millennium moved to the Savoy on Geary, I followed, only to be disappointed by the hugeness of the place, the steak-house feel, the heavy fabric drapes, and a devolving clientele (which included many see-and-be-seen types as well as nouveau riche, sock-less hipsters clad in boat shoes and tiny blazers straining against gym-rat muscles). One night at the Savoy was veritably a man-bun exposition. When Millennium moved to College Avenue in Oakland, we went a few times. Enjoyed the happy hour and an occasional cocktail. But as the dining scene in the East Bay continued to evolve, we turned away from one of our favorite establishments as it sought to re-establish its own primacy. Thus, July 1, 2021, is an evening that will live forever in our minds and on our palates. While the delta variant of everyone's favorite Trump legacy, COVID-45, was beginning to mitigate the gains of recent months, we decided to return to Millennium. A great evening. The food was fantastic. We enjoyed a variety of salads. The two tacos, one oyster mushrooms and the other a medley of various items (such as vegetarian chorizo and poblano peppers), were excellent. Texture and flavor both scored. As my main, I ordered the Tempeh. While a bit salty, this was just a well balanced and excellent dish. Again, texture and flavor. For dessert? I actually tried the chocolate olive oil brownie. Texture, flavor, dark chocolate . . . . As someone who rarely (almost never) eats dessert, the brownie was a nice exception. Service was excellent. COVID protocols in place. Value was very good, as every labor-intensive item was under $30, plus a prix fixe for $60 (four items). Will return. - workingman's gourmand
