I just had dinner at Tyler Florence's new restaurant. We were celebrating my wife's birthday and made reservations a September 27 for October 23, 2021. We arrived 10 minutes early and were told the table was not ready, so they showed us to a bench in a downstairs bar. They were busier to an Eagles concert at Chase. It was dark and somewhat funky as we were sat next to a couple. We talked to them as they were just finishing up dinner and raved about the burger and filet. They loved their meal. Exactly at our assigned time, the concierge/greeter came and got us and wished my wife a happy birthday before taking us upstairs. We were sat next to a pole almost obscured from view. Interesting since there were other options available, and we saw another couple seated in a large booth. Tyler was working the room. The champagne cart came offering some great choices, but we had brought a bottle of red wine, so my wife and I opted out. Although a little pricey, I did order a Manhattan, which was one of the best I have ever had and I think a good value. Most of the dinner went south from there, unfortunately. Many servers constantly checked in on us and doing with water and pouring the red wine. Our original waiter must have left as we were handed off to Deacon(?). He was the best part and most consistent part of our evening. So service was good, but he made it better. The meal itself had loads of potential but for this price point and reputation fell short. We started with the Miller and Lux Cesar Salad. It is made tableside and worth the show, although our salad did not look like others, we had seen prepared by Tyler and other waiters. It was a well-thought-out and tasty salad with all of the components meshing together for a beautiful salad. The waitress who prepared it did explain the elements, and it was delicious. Unfortunately, this is where the meal turned south. We ordered the Tomahawk steak, Thumbelina Carrots, and Potatoe Puree. All the components were delivered at the same time, but they arrived cold. The carrots had terrific flavor, and the potatoes were a creamy puree but cold. They also forgot to deliver the sauces we ordered for our steak, and they were lukewarm at best. The biggest disappointment was the Tomahawk as it was cooked to medium-rare but not warm at all. Since it was my wife's birthday, I was able to get a waiter's attention, and he apologized and immediately got some help and re-fired our meal. Well almost. You see, I knew we had only tasted a couple of pieces of meat before we realized it had been sitting or forgot to be delivered timely. After about 5 minutes, the re-fired/warmed meal arrived. The carrots and the potatoes were hot, and both tasted exceptional. The steak, which is $130, was reheated and brought back at a medium well, which was not the temperature we had requested when ordered. We just decided enough was enough, and we were hungry. The steak had a nice sear, and the flavor was what we would have expected. Again they forgot the sauces which we had to ask for again. They did bring the sauce, and it was hot and the perfect compliment. They did bring an additional sauce which was an excellent accompaniment to the steak. (Recommend Green Pepper and the Targion sauce) Desserts were good, but my wife thought they had potential but almost seemed like they had been out too long on the desert cart. The lime Yuzu tart was the better of the two (St. Honore was pretty good when I used coffee to complement its flavor.) They did bring an amuse-bouche, delicious bites. Another disappointment was that the table next to us, who we talked about some enters we had seen at tables close to or across from us, made a reservation four days before Saturday, had a personalized birthday card given to their member who was celebrating. It was another ah shuck moment that could have made it a more memorable night. In the end, they did not charge us for the sauces. Here are the takeaways: The Cocktail menu is impressive, as is the wine selection. The salad was presented tableside and had all the right ingredients. The steak would be top rate if served correctly. The Dover sole looked terrific, also finished tableside. The Lux Burger was highly rated by patrons as well. The desserts were good but not memorable for a steak house of this quality. So, would I recommend Miller & Lux? I think it could be worth revisiting. I would not recommend the table we were seated at, but other tables were terrific. Several other steak houses in the city( Harris', Epic and Alexanders, etc.) could be better on any given night for the price. Tyler s a fantastic chef and owner and will make this restaurant work like his other in the city. We enjoyed the people watching and had a great conversation with the Foodie Chap, Liam Mayclem, who was at the table next to us.
