Great food and very authentic
Great little trattoria - obviously packed with locals in the know. Phenomenal seafood linguine - so good we had to come back and have it again. Lovely staff, cosy and comfortable venue and prices reasonable. Loved it.

This is our favorite place in New York and we come every time we are in town. The Caesar Salad is the best ever, the Caprese Salad is amazing, Carbonera perfect, fettuccini with mushrooms to die for and the orecchietti worth wading through a snow storm for. The staff, including Dan and Alyssa, are wonderful and make you feel like part of the family.

We were a party of 8. We had an amazing meal. The appetizers were very flavorful. We started with stuffed mushrooms, asparagus, Burrata and a hot mista. All very good. The Caesar salad also excellent. The pasta dishes were equally outstanding. This is authentic Italian cuisine ! No out there ingredients or trying too hard cuisine. Our waiter equally excellent! We will return. Loved it!
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic New York Italian Trattoria at its best
If you want to experience great authentic New York Italian cuisine in an informal setting this is the place to go. As for some of the negative reviews: it's clear that whoever wrote them had no idea of what a trattoria is. If you want haut cuisine in a fancy pretentious setting, with groveling waiters go someplace else. That's not what Monte's is. The food at Monte's is absolutely delicious. My wife and I and our son started off with baby artichokes oreganata, white mushrooms stuffed with vegetable puree, and eggplant rollatini. Each was terrific: (we all sampled all three), flavorful without being overpowering or drowned in sauce or oil. (My wife's term was "feather light"). Then onto the main course, three dishes with house made pasta: Cannelloni stuffed with veal, spinach, and ricotta, Fettuccini Verdi Bolognese, and Manicotti. Each was brilliant. Again, tasty, without being over-seasoned or drowned in oil. Longtime chef Mosconi has been there for long enough that he doesn't need to make a "statement". The meal was accompanied by a good Rosso di Montalcino (our waiter joked with us about the name of the producer "Paradisone") which paired well with the food, from the extensive wine list with selections at a variety of price points. For desert my wife and I ordered the Tiramisu, which we have had on previous visits and is without question the best Tiramisu we've ever had. Our son ordered Cannoli. Anybody can prepare a cannoli with a sweet and yummy filling. The trick is in the pastry. This one was not only crisp (how many soggy cannolis have we all had?) but also had its own delightful flavor. All of this for a very reasonable price. As far as the "atmosphere": again if you're looking for a trendy or pretentious setting this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a warm, authentically Italian setting surrounded by pictures of Italy and Italian celebrities who've dined here, and veteran waiters who are friendly and knowledgeable and not phony, this is the place, Yes, the tables are close together, but not obnoxiously so. The noise level is fine, we had no difficulty conversing in our normal voices. We didn't order any of the non-pasta mains, but I have no doubt they too are excellent if what we were served is any indication. Ignore the gripers! Take it from me -- I live in Long Island where there are plenty of good Italian restaurants -- this place is special. We've been there on a number of occasions over the years, and it hasn't lost anything. After you're done, you step out onto MacDougal street in the heart of the West Village feeling full and satisfied, but not stuffed. What's not to like? p.s. I am not affiliated with this place in any way -- I'm 100% "civilian".

The food was not high quality and the service was lackluster. We left after dinner and got pizza. Never again. With all the choices in NYC, particularly in this area, this place should be avoided at all costs.

The most charming and delicious Italian restaurant in NYC. The staff, including Chef were friendly and attentive. Artichoke Heart and Bolognese were outstanding!
Be the first to ReplyItalian, old favorite
Great Italian food. Busy, crowded, tiny tables, a classic! Staff old school. House wine is good, half or full carafe. I have enjoyed dining at Monte's for 25 years.
Be the first to ReplyMelt in your mouth delicious
Not sure if itโs because I rarely eat Italian food or of this place is just heaven on earth, but you can taste the TLC that goes into preparing the food at this quaint restaurant. We visited on a recent food tour and sampled the pasta bolognese. Wow. What a difference from store-bought pasta. Melted in our mouths. An explosion of flavor in every bite. Definitely would come here for a meal on a future visit. Momma Mia
Be the first to ReplyChaotic Reservation Experience
The food was authentic and lovely, I had a gluten free diet which was accommodated to an acceptable level. However, the reservation system was very bizarre, we and many other people who had reserved were waiting outdoors for up to 40 mins for our reserved tables- not very punctual especially if youโre hungry. The restaurant was busy and had a fun vibe!

having been here before and rating it very highly, we were very disappointed this current visit --- waiter never told us 'specials', tables were too close to each other so we heard other table's conversations, dishes were brought out one-at-a-time to each of the 4 of us, too much time elapsed between appetizer and entree, and then entree with dessert.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic New York Restaurant
Very authentic Italian New York restaurant in the heart of Greenwich Village. Not the best meal we had during our stay but very nice and also well priced. Service was excellent, atmosphere great and deserts outstanding. Tiramisu was amazing.

My teen daughter and I went here because we read it had one of the best chicken marsalas in the city. When we arrived to our reservation, the restaurant was fairly empty and we did not feel particularly welcomed. The food was good, but the service was minimal at best and we left wishing we'd eaten somewhere else in the city for a better overall experience. We were headed to a Broadway show, so we'd gone out of our way to eat here. Not worth the hassle.
Be the first to ReplyI really really donโt understand. This isnโt even good food.
My husband, daughter and I had just one night in New York and decided to try to find some of the best old school Italian we could last Monday the 27th . I spent a very long time on the internet trying to find something perfect and purposely avoided Little Italy because of its reputation as a tourist trap. This place seemed to hit all the marks: itโs been around forever (over 100 years), owners are there, has amazing reviews, has only 4? bad reviews, is reasonable enough for a nice meal, reviews talk about how friendly the staff isโฆliterally seems perfect. Well, I have to say, I do not understand this place at all and havenโt been able to stop thinking about it since we had the meal. It bugs me that much. First off, ambiance is nothing special, could be much more charming, there was a faint sour small when approaching the table, their prices on their website are way out of date and are at least $3-$5 more per item in person: I mean our Caesar was $3 more ($12) and our main dishes were, at least, $5 more per item, at least. Bread was fine, just drizzled lightly with olive oil so nothing special, olive oil seemed good, not rancid, but there wasnโt much on it so it was basically a plate of 4 slices of white bread. No balsamic or anything else other than salt and pepper on the unattractive white paper covered tables. (Iโm not a fan of white table cloths covered with paper: either do paper or tablecloths, you canโt have both worlds.). Old Fashioned drink was fine and strong, nothing special like people say. Caesar was fine and enhanced by the large amount of capers: lots of white parts of romaine, not my fav but Iโm used to it in my restaurant caesars. Then our main dishes came. First impressions, cook, didnโt look like the chef everyone talks about, brought out our food, not the older waiter we had, all our food was shifted on the plate as in off to side and not put in the middle of the plate and the portions were small. We all started eating, we were, after all, still excited for our food at this point. We all fell silent and then the โhmmmโs started from around the table. We all started cocking our heads, looking at each other, taking our bites, trying to analyze exactly what we we were eating because it was becoming increasingly obvious it was Not good Italian nor was it even good food. So then we just spent the rest of the time comparing each others food, analyzing just how bad it was. It really brought us together. I had the Linguine alle vongole with white sauce which was what our waiter recommended over the red. It was beyond salty and gritty (obviously not rinsed). I just asked for more bread so I could mellow out the salt. My husband got the Spaghetti con Polpette. Meatballs were good but red sauce was the worst: tasted like just straight purรฉed tomatoes straight from the can. There was literally no other flavor: no pepper, garlic, herbs, maybe a little salt, nothing else. My daughter got the Penne Primavera . We donโt even know what was going on with that: without any spices and just a bunch of vegetables coated in the terrible red sauce on spaghetti, it just tasted weird. And did I mention there wasnโt a spread of Parmesan anywhere?! I donโt know if there wasnโt supposed to be or if there was. Our waiter never came by while we were eating so we couldnโt share any of our thoughts at the moment. In fact, he hadnโt been to our table since he brought the salad, I think he brought the salad. The cook brought out our main meals. When the waiter did finally come by it was just to collect our plates and he didnโt ask us anything so we didnโt say anything. I feel like they are a bunch of guys that have all been there forever and they are now just scamming and milking it: I felt bad and couldnโt not tip or say anything at the time because I literally couldnโt help thinking about them having to wait tables at their age. When we got away, though, I couldnโt help thinking they know exactly what they are doing, praying on tourists who think they are coming for old classic Italian, using old school charm but panning off bottom of the barrel food with zero effort at top prices. I want my night back, I really want to have gone somewhere else, and this really makes me distrust trip advisor. I live in Oklahoma and we have a way better Italian restaurant here at Victoriaโs than this place. Iโm also not Italian but we all know itโs not hard to do good italian, it is hard, however, to do very good to great italian. This place with all its charm, not really, unfortunately, doesnโt even do good italian or good food. Will someone please explain this place to me, and give me my one night in Ny back, too, if you can:)

Typical and authentic Italian restaurant, I spent a very good moment on the terrace with the chef and nice clients ! Try the Prosciutto si Parma and the spaghetti con polpette !!

Had a great dinner on Good Friday. Very comfortable eating outside. Perfect location on Macdougal. Really hit the spot after walking through Washington Square to get to the restaurant. Very reasonable prices for NYC. The chef was phenomenal as he shared his life story and pictures of his family with the customers.. Definitely will go back
Be the first to ReplyGreat character and food
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Monteโs. The wine was fabulous and the service was great. It was a cosy meal after a long cold day. They made a vegan pasta dish for me which was a generous main course size much to the chagrin of my husband and sons who had a primi size!! Food was very tasty and we would return. The chef is quite rightly in love with football but more importantly his daughter.
Be the first to ReplyThe best veal saltimbocca ever!
Truly outstanding veal saltimbocca! The server was extremely nice and welcoming, though there were some confusions, which could easily have been my fault.
Be the first to ReplyHomemade Goodness
We came here as a large group with reservations and were seated center dining room. A large menu to look at, a couple of bottles of wine started the dinner before classic Caesar salads. My entree was fabulous and everything about this place was old homemade Italian.
Many a celebrity has dined here, and I can see why. By the time we left, the line was well out the door to get in.
Highly recommend Monte's.
Great Italian in the Village
My wife and I arrived early for our reservation, but they accommodated us and sat us early. Fresh bread with olive oil was delicious. Calamari was good and the fresh mozzarella on the caprese was excellent. My wife had the chicken parmigiana and loved it. Sausage & peppers were done to perfection. Finished off with great tiramisu. Full bar with good wine and after dinner drinks. Will definitely go back

Classic Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village/Washington Square area. Food is excellent as was service. Our waiter had been there for over 20 years and was very prompt and watched over us without being intrusive. We had the veal parmigiana and the rigatoni bolognese-both were perfect. Portions are not huge but very filling. Will definitely go back.
Be the first to ReplyItalian-American. NOT Italian.
Some people still think that Italian food is all about oil, garlic and heavy cream.
Forget it.
Thatโs Italian-American food.
Unpleasant experience.
Also, double check your check: they added a bottle we didnโt have.
How sad.
Lovely outdoor ambience; mediocre food; inattentive service
We'd read the great reviews for Monte's and we were excited to try it. Good start with the charming outdoor table on MacDougal Street. It went downhill from there. Inattentive servers, who made us feel like they were doing us a favor, were also brusque. The food was meh - a step above Olive Garden. The tri-colored salad seemed to be poured from a prepared salad bag. The pasta was fine - but didn't overwhelm the senses. There are too many excellent Italian restaurants in NYC to waste your time here.

My daughter and I visited after our old favorite Italian go-to in NYC closed due to COVID and we were NOT disappointed! The service was excellent from the hostess to the waiter to his assistant, and the food was magnificent - the chicken parm is the best I've ever had and the meatballs my daughter ordered didn't last long. My only regret is that we didn't save room for the Tiramisu!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and old school charm
Was looking for a great Italian dinner when we read the reviews on Monte's. We were lucky enough to get right in on a Sunday night. They are serving outside due to COVID but the inside is once again open which is where we were seated. They have a full bar and a great/reasonably priced wine selection. Our waiter steered me to a lovely wine when I was going to do my fallback Chianti choice. Ambiance was great and if you are a fan of Rat Pack music, you will be in heaven. Clientele was a cross section of NY and it was easy to figure out the regulars. That said, everyone was made to feel like you were a new best customer. The food was excellent. We started with Baked clams and I had Spinach canneloni stuffed with veal, spinach and cheese with a meat sauce that did not overwhelm the luscious flavors. My husband went with the Spaghetti Carbonara. I am told the pasta is made there and it seemed very fresh. This is not a place that rushes you out the door to turn over the table. Your salad does not slap down on the table 5 minutes after your order and before your appetizer like another restaurant we visited this trip. You have the opportunity to talk to your dining companion, people watch ( the small bar with a bartender who orchestrates like a symphony conducter) or just wish you had a Monte's of your own closer to home.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing!
Our party of 4 went this past Sunday and were disappointed with the food and the environment. There were three other parties eating and the owner went to each table to ask how the food was and to make small talk. I guess we were not the right color because he never made eye contact or spoke to us. I felt awful because my husband wanted to take a picture with him. I hope he reads this review and remembers that he is an immigrant as well. Sad that this behavior is still happening in the 21st century!
Also, the portions were small and we ended going for pizza a couple of hours later. I so regret having spent my money at this restaurant with Babbo being so close.
