Food couldn't be worse.
The carbonara had a pool of yellow/grey liquid in the dish, with egg which had cooked onto the pasta in clumps - inedible and was refunded. The paglie e fieno was dried pasta with a few peas, and a tiny bit of prosciutto, probably ~$2 to make at home. The restaurant was full, thanks to the location, but there are dozens of better Italian spots within a 15 minute walk.

I've eaten here twice and both times the pasta was among the best I've ever had. The first waiter who served me was hilarious and very personable. The second one was much different (hardly said a word). That said, the overall vibe is great and I get the sense these people have all worked here for years. Definitely recommend.

Very pleasantly surprised by this platonic ideal of a Red Sauce joint. It's tucked away on McDougall Street. It's in the middle of a very touristy area, but seems like a local place. The small dining room was charming. There was a bachelors party going on in the upstairs dining room. The waiters were straight out of central casting, in a good way. They were very pleasant and friendly. We brought our own wine. The $30 corkage fee was reasonable. All the food was delicious. We shared the hot and cold appetizers to start. We had lasagna, which was excellent. The chicken Parmesan was on point. I had an impressive Veal chop parmigiana. The prices are very reasonable. There's no cutting edge cuisine here, just the best possible version of Italian American red sauce related food. We will definitely return.

We had a great wine with dinner. Would definitely recommend.

Was invited here and had an Excellent time, up until we asked for the dessert menu, and our waiter seemed like he wanted to turn the tables over to the next customers and asked us if we wanted to have our dessert by the bar, I thought that was ridiculous. Anyway, that didn't take away from the best cheese stuffed lamb shank I ever had, and the veal stuffed tortellini that practically melted in my mouth. As for the waiter, he would've gotten a better tip if he didn't say that.

Maybe Nate's Trattoria has been around for 105 years, run by the same family (a family member is still in the kitchen), so this is your quintessential red sauce Italian American restaurant harking back to the days when the Village was an immigrant neighborhood. When you walk down the steps into Monte's you are walking back in time. The food and service are fine. You go to Monte's Trattoria because that is where your great-grandfather ate.

Be the first to ReplyProbably the worst meal I've had in New York.
The vibes are very cute. But a past review describes it as "an old dog that needs to be taken out back and shot" which is very true. I believe it was once good, but not anymore. The service is awful - only waiter was one very old man. Waited very long for mid-afternoon Sunday lunch with only two other tables. The fried zucchini was okay but the sauce is not great. I got the ravioli, which was undercooked and again watery sauce. My husband got the tortelloni - literally 8 pieces for $22. Never got the coffee I ordered. $60 for the worst meal I've had in New York. Felt like being robbed when we saw the check

Notice the negative reviews are more recent ? Was a really nice mom-pop restaurant who cared about every table, but the son has taken over to run the place and it has really changed. ALL he cares about is flipping the tables. Waiters will ask you for the order before you take your coat off. Pop used to walk around, talk to all the tables, food was hot, you didn't feel rushed, and treated like family. No longer about the customers, it's all about making as much money as they can during the time they are open. The waiters are told to rush the table. If you ask to sit a moment, you get dagger eyes. Used to go frequently, but wont be there again. Not the 'ol Montes. Found some other Italian gem restaurants since...and they care about you, hot food, and no rush. Go, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

After Oscar dinner, had a dinner, ran by family, true Sicilian foods with upgraded details, artichokes was amazing, raviolis were popping in the mouth with various flavors, and rib eye steak was off the chart!Pairing with Barolo! Want to come back here

My friend made a reservation here for our little get together. My initial impression was "wow this place is very small". Everyone was well-dressed and the setup reminded me of a wedding after party, but the table setup wasn't ideal. We were in the middle of the room and people had to ask us to move to get by--that's how cramped it was. The food was "ok". I got the spaghetti and meatballs which was eh at best and my friends both got Rigatoni Bolognese. The waiters seemed annoyed with us and constantly filled our untouched water to get us to go. I also found it odd that they took the cheese that was on our table (with the same serving spoon we touched) and used it to serve another table?! When we finally asked for our check, it took 25 minutes to get it. Pro tip--ask for your check as soon as they come for your plate; they'll forget you otherwise.

My boyfriend and I were visiting NYC from Toronto and came here for dinner. Amazing service, they made you feel like family. The food was delicious, the drinks were strong and tasty, and there was a cozy intimate atmosphere. Will be back next time we're in New York.

Came here for a late night dinner because it was convenient & still open. Opted for the lasagna & ossobucco, as well as the clams in white sauce appetizer. We also got drinks, nothing fancy -- aeperol spritz and a martini. Drinks were pretty average-- nothing special but still good. My lasagna was delicious, and super filling despite appearing a little sad when brought to me. Super fresh too! Boyfriend's ossobucco was alright, his only complaint that the gnocchi was a little softer than anticipated. Clams in white sauce were great! Overall, typical comfort Italian food that definitely got us full and gave us a nice night out. The waiters were definitely attentive and great though, and clearly loved their job.

Solo diner and I felt treated like a queen. The gentlemen who waited on me were so sweet and I see no reason to journey elsewhere. I had the veal bolognese and the tiramisu. Both were excellent. The Barbera was delicious pairing.

While montes has the feel of an old school authentic Italian restaurant they miss the mark with their food. A real Italian place would never put cream and chopped Ham in a carbonara. I should have scrolled down and read the many poor reviews. Yelp needs to work out their algorithm to better weight the many poor reviews this place has. I give them 2 stars cause the service actually was not bad as many people say but we went early. Montes also needs to pay attention to who's dining at their restaurant so when their done with their meal outside and go into use the restaurants bathroom they aren't treated like strangers off the street. Giving both my dinner guests bad vibes as they left the restaurant. We'll never go back but maybe that was their intention if you know what I mean. I kinda wonder if they intentionally make bad versions of their dishes to guest they don't like as what was served didn't match the pictures or descriptions on yelp.

Grew up in lower Manhattan and remember going to Montes with my family. Stumbled back upon Montes while visiting NYC colleges and looking for a mid-afternoon lunch. Was as wonderful as I remember back in the 1970s. Been way too long for a return and this place is the real deal. Go while you still can...these places are few and far between in NYC...
Be the first to ReplyMonte's deserves a 12/10 in my opinion.
I've stopped in here four or five times over the years, more often than not, unexpectedly. I went the other day with a Caesar salad and burrata on my mind. The Caesar was big and flavorful, the burrata was generously surrounded by prosciutto. The waiter brought me fresh bread to enjoy with my burrata. I had a couple aperol spritz as well, which were nothing special, but did the job. Where Monte's excels is with service. Some may think the whole waiters in vests and ties thing is dated, but to me it's reminiscent of old New York, which is what Monte's delivers. I sit outside post covid because I like to bring my dog, but their dining room downstairs is very Italian. Loud, bustling, dark wood, with pictures on the walls that all tell as story. Last time I was there by myself, the chef pulled the chair out across from me, asked how my meal was, and started chatting about my dog. Another man interrupted, holding fresh zucchini flowers in his hands, speaking Italian. The chef got up, and told me he'd send one to my table. About 25-30 minutes later a delicious ricotta stuffed zucchini flower in delicious red sauce came to my table, gratis. Monte's is old New York. It's a perfect red sauce joint, very reasonably priced and helmed by a chef who puts lots of love into the place. This place is as great for dining alone, as it is for loud boisterous groups. They only have one bathroom downstairs, which can be tricky because it's a sizable place. However, there's a 2nd bathroom in the upstairs dining room, provided it isn't closed for a special event. Here's hoping Monte's is open for another 100 years.

Be the first to ReplyGreat food in a casual comfortable Greenwich Village
Great food in a casual comfortable Greenwich Village setting. Tri/color chopped salad, special stuffed squash blossom vegetable primi, and chicken scarpariello (hard to find) plus classic veal marsala were all perfectly prepared. Wine list providing a wide range of Italian choices by glass, 1/2 or full carafe was a pleasant surprise. Had to have the zabaglione for desert... theirs is a rich custard served over fresh fruit. Definitely keeping it on our list.
Be the first to ReplyI really, really, really wanted to love Monte's.
There's a lot of hype surrounding Monty's, established in 1918, and my expectations were high. It was bustling at 8:45 on a Friday night and everyone appeared to be having a good time. I really enjoyed the older European waiters who looked as though they may have been working there since the place opened 100 years ago.It was the food, however, that disappointed us. We started with the baked clams oreganato which were delicious. The salads, unfortunately, were wilted and room temperature and underseasoned. The Frutti De Mar was woefully under seasoned And very disappointing. The stuffed veal chop in Marsala sauce was tasty and well seasoned but overcooked.I noticed that about 90% of the diners ordered the veal Parmesan. They seemed to be enjoying it. Maybe that should've been a clue as to what to order. It might be worth another try to order the veal Parmesan but with so many other choices I likely won't.

Went here with a colleague last week while we were in the city for work. Wasn't sure at first. Honestly youbhave to walk down steps to go in and I can see how People might dismiss it and walk past. That's a mistake. The venue is a great setting. Amazing music just loud enough to hear but not interfere with conversation. The food? Forget about it. Bolognese with fettuccine was unreal. Orrechiette con broccoli was even better. We ordered 3 half orders of pasta and split it amongst 3 people and there was plenty. Ordered the lamb and oso bucco and I've never had meat so tender and flavorful. Service was amazing. I honestly think everytime I go to our NY OFFICE I will go have dinner here it left that good of an impression.
