Outstanding
Great experience from all aspects. Service impeccable, chef super friendly and talkative. The food exquisite, the sake pairing top quality and very interesting. He only downside, it is very expensive, so reserve for a special occasion.

From start to finish we had a perfect evening with Chef Shigeyuku and his amazing staff led by manager Philip. The fish is pristine--no gimmicks or distracting sauces--everything is in balance. The atmosphere makes you feel like you are in the depths of a building in Tokyo--or any secret, wonderful place in a large city with unparalleled food and drink. Not to be missed if you're a true sushi lover.

Noda is special! They earned a Michelin star in a vey short time after opening and I could tell why. The restaurant doesn't have a sign on the street - just a door with a number. When you enter the small intimate bar area you can tell you are in for a fantastic experience. The restaurant seats only 8 and only serves omakase. Chef is personable, fun and engaging. Definitely splurge and do the Sake pairing. We should have shared one because it was a LOT of sake. Every detail to this gem was covered. The food, service and experience were all amazing. HIGHLY recommend.

Make no mistake, this is a very expensive Omakase. Right at the reservation website, you’re instantly charged $300. And at this price point, it must be perfect.
The ambiance is quite fancy once you can find the place. It’s quite hidden so there is someone outside to greet you in case you can’t find it. What’s confusing is a few stores down, there is another Omakase in plain view which I am thinking of trying. The storefront there definitely looks better. Here, there is no storefront and you have to be guided to a labyrinth which takes you to the restaurant. Basically, this used to be someone’s apartment.
The waiting lounge is nice and quite fancy. They won’t let you forget you are in a fancy place with everyone dressed formally in business suits and the bar is the type you see in James Bond movies. The dinner did not start in time and we had to wait about 10 minutes before we are escorted to the main dining room.
The main dining room can seat 9 ppl but depending on the night, they will take some chairs away and on this night, it was less than capacity which means more elbow room. The chairs are quite plush and comfy. Possibly the most comfy Omakase seats I ever sat on. The decor is a nice blend of traditional mixed with contemporary. As with most Omakases, there is never a window around and so it’s the usual stuffiness. Make no mistake, the counter is quite expensive and made of quality wood and the old-styled lantern light covers add to the atmosphere. The pop songs playing in the background may seem out of place but it looks like they’re trying to target the younger crowd vs the banker type as this night shows.
There is only one chef with his assistants in the background. The chef introduced himself before the meal to everyone and is quite friendly, probably the most friendly chef I ever met. As he chats with everyone, it’s easy to overlook he is serving so many ppl all by himself when at most Omakases, 3 to 4 is the max for a chef. Talking and preparing is second nature to him and he never missed a beat in his preparation.
All the niceties are here. Warm towel, finger wipe, napkin, and prompt service.
I found the cooked dishes were quite good and better than the sushi portion of the meal. The sushi was of good quality but small and somewhat generic. There were no star dish during this meal and it was all quite forgettable to me.
I also decided on some very expensive liquor but they do not even pour in front of me. When it’s more than a 100 a sip, they should pour in front of me. A very big miss here.
In all, it’s not a $300+ meal unless you enjoy being pampered but I look for a balance of ambiance, food, and service and they only succeed in the ambiance. There are many exceptional Omakases in the city that cost only $200 including tip and tax and some even less and they all have a star dish but here, all you get is an expensive bill with nothing much to cheer about.
A scam
I don’t know who to blame: Tock or the staff at Noda for their mistake. I paid a 1000 dollar meal in Tock in advance for a special occasion and they wanted to charge the bill again at Noda at the end of the meal, when we already drank their sake pairing… They don’t have to be a genius to know that one of the couple already paid the bill in advance.
Who cares about the sushi, their ambiance, their decor when they charge double? I used Tock before and it was success. I guess it was the Noda team that saw us drunk and they though: “This is the moment to charge them again”. After we uncover their scam, I told the waiter that I already paid in Tock, and he answered, “Oh really?” Run away from Nada!
Spectacular Omakase
This place is just a gem! Fabulous cozy setting with a spectacular bar seating 8 people - and the chef serving you omakase as in Ginza style! Love it. The vibe is hip but the food is superb Japanese Sushi omakase - as good as you can get anywhere. The ingredients are top notch and the chef is beyond good! The Sommalier has a wonderful sake pairing and is extremely knowledgeable- just wonderful

Noda is curated to be an experience from beginning to end, but the focus remains on Tsunoda-san's skills and an excellent selection of ingredients. While the space may be more warmly decorated than a traditional high-end Edomae sushi restaurant, it retains the same tranquility due to the intimate design as well as a minimalist approach the keeps the focus on the fish rather than the garnish.
The meal was at least as good as any omakase I've had around the world, including at chef's former home at Sushi Iwa. Selection varies daily, but the Hokkaido uni chawanmushi with caviar was a delight to start, and the botan ebi is a personal favorite that is too infrequently seen. Every course was delicious.
The pre-dinner signature cocktails were unique and creative, and the Japanese whisky selection is extensive with knowledgeable staff to match (although perhaps not the easiest on the budget). Similarly, the sake list is wide-ranging. My only regret is not having gone with a bottle -- while the sake pairing provides a good tour of styles that match the meal, it did not seem like a good value compared to the bottle offerings.
Definitely one of the top sushi options in NYC.
Tsunoda-san’s hospitality
Great for everything! Starter is the modernized mushroom soup and followed by delicious sushi, no doubt. It goes avantgarde inside but keep the spirit of Japanese pride in its food. Very chic, very worth visiting!
