We (my wife and I, along with our 28 year old niece) visited North Pond on a Friday evening in late August. A heat wave (90+ degrees and high humidity) was still stifiling Chicago, but we opted for their patio anyway.
Ambience: North Pond is located at the north end of North Pond, a small restored pond just north of Lincoln Park Zoo. As such, there is a great skyline view of downtown Chicago, framed by the pond itself and surrounding greenery. The patio seating (seven tables set in front of the floor to ceiling doors of the building) offer the best views. We had a 5:30pm reservation, which was opening time, so we truly had our pick of the outside tables (they are first come, first served). Patio tables are sturdy metal mesh with an umbrella; seats are metal with fabric or rubber seat and back support. We live a short walk from North Pond, and often walk past the restaurant on our way to the Lakefront Trail, so we knew full well there would be a good bit of pedestrian traffic pretty much all night.
Food: We began with a cocktail, each of us happened to order a different one. All were well received. The four course tasting menu has three choices per course. We also opted for the wine pairing, one glass per course. The meal began with a small potato roll with butter, followed by an amuse bouche of trout roe and shaved vegetables. Both excellent. All three of us selected the carrot and mussels for our first course - I'd only had steamed mussels in the shell but this was more of a salad. The mussels were pre-shelled and chilled. Very refreshing. For the second course I had the foie gras while wife and niece went with sea scallop and corn. The foie gras was fine, but the scallop was very good (wife was kind enough to give me a bite); very buttery and cooked perfectly. We all selected dry aged beef strip loin for our main course, and no one was disappointed. Our server cautioned that the beef wouldn't be as tender as filet mignon; I've favored strip steak for years since it has a much "beefier" taste, so was well aware of the potential trade-off of flavor vs. tenderness. I've also had strip steak often enough to know a good restaurant will come pretty close to a filet's tenderness. North Pond completely nailed it - we all agreed it was the best dish of the night by far (the pistachio puree provided a flavor boost as well). A square of cornbread from the pastry chef preceeded the dessert; I went with a cheese plate, while wife and niece both selected the chocolate and passion fruit marzipan. Not sure what made me go with the cheese plate...it was fine and I enjoyed it, but the ladies won the round once again. Lastly, we were presented with a plate of confections, as we were celebrating a birthday.
Service: The service was outstanding. The meal was very well paced from start to finish; we never felt rushed or felt we were forgotten. We asked for coasters or for a cocktail napkin for our water glasses, as a lot of condensation was forming on them. Instead, they brought out a cloth dinner napkin for each of us to serve as a placemat. The servers provided a brief explanation of each dish and of each wine, and happily answered any questions we had.
