Great Food, Service/Experience lacking given price tag
As others have mentioned, the food was amazing, but the service is quite subpar. It is an odd paradox of fine dining restaurant, and casual service - not what one expects for $500pp
Be the first to ReplyFresh, Flavorful, Tasty, Trendy, Expensiveโฆbut Worth It
Otoko, and itโs collocated bar Watertrade, combine to provide a luxury dining experience in South Central Austin that is a foodie must. Granted, itโs an expensive treat, but the unique flavors and food preparation make it worthwhileโฆ.though sitting at the counter and watching the chefs was less interactive then one would hope. The multi-course omakase meal of sushi and other Asian delights includes a smoked course of fish, a fantastic Wagyu dish, a best Iโve ever had uni dish, oyster with roe, and to my surprise a escargot dish that was pleasing. Hats off to the bartenders at Watertrade who created great cocktails and had spot on knowledge and recommendations for sampling Japanese whiskey.
Be the first to ReplyLove Watertrade!
I have been to Watertrade (the bar attached to Otoko) a few times now, and every time it has been a total retreat from the stress of life. The atmosphere is just right, with a fun variety of music, comfortable spaces to lounge in, and friendly laid-back service. It's an intimate space perfect for a romantic date or for a small group of friends and always quiet enough to have a great conversation. (You need a reservation because the place is so small.) Because it is so small you get really personal service-- flights of whiskey are picked based on your taste. And the FOOD!!! A small menu offers some stellar selections from the Otoko menu. The hamachi is a must-try and if you want something sweet the ice cream sandwich is like none other.
Be the first to ReplyIt's all in the details!
My husband and I had an incredible experience at Otoko last night! We started the evening in the sister bar, Watertrade, with unique cocktails in a private area. After 30 minutes, the staff moved us to Otoko-- seating us with ample Covid-19 accommodations (# of seats reduced from 12 to 6, plexiglass walls, etc).
Every detail was highly considered. Prior to the reservation, Otoko reached out for information about why we had chosen to visit. I had provided information that my husband was graduating from his master's program, and every member of the staff congratulated him-- they even put "congratulations on graduating" in a personalized menu.
The food was exceptionally interesting and tasty. We particularly loved the first half of the meal as the second half was a bit more experimental and offered flavors we weren't used to eating. On the whole, I would absolutely recommend Otoko to friends and families. It is a place that perfectly caters to special occasions. We found the price to be exceptionally reasonable given the high level of service and quality of food.
Over-priced - no flexibility and no one listens to the Customer Feedback
Over-priced. I sent back several of the pairings and was not happy with the proportions or some of the food and was not able to substitute. This was supposed to be a Birthday dinner and the staff was completely impersonal. This does not hold a candle to five star sushi restaurants. You will pay 3 to 4 times more and you will not get the freshest fish. I have been in restaurants that carved up fresh fish in front of me. My feedback was not only not listened to - I did not want to eat the rest of the menu and instead of accommodating me with anything that I did like, I was asked to leave. Prepared foods are not five star. The sushi chef is over-rated and yes, some of the sauces were brilliant but again - pre-made. Would not hold a candle or be competitive with other sushi restaurants at the same given price. Very disappointed and more disappointed that there was no flexibility or respect for feedback.

We absolutely enjoyed dinner at this restaurant. Fantastic cocktails, foods and service. Online reservation process is easy. Tickets are purchased in advance. The reservation also includes a half hour seating at the bar adjacent to the restaurant prior to dinner. Cocktails at the bar were well made. A nice way to unwind before dinner.
Guests are seated at the counter where you can watch the chef masterfully create the dishes. The restaurant offers a nice variety of wines, sakes and cocktails.
All dishes were simply delicious. Fresh ingredients, flavorful and unique artfully presented. Staff provide a description of each dish. Timing between dishes was just right.
The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. Seats at the counter are comfortable. Staff are attentive and pleasant. Our menus were printed with our names on it- a nice touch!
A fantastic Omasake experience. Well worth it. We will be back for more.
Treat yourself to this bliss.
Otoko is like a fleeting sweet dream from which you don't want to wake up. As I am writing this review, my eyes are closed so that the memories in my taste buds can be awakened, distilling the essence of whole dining experience.
Otoko feels very intimate and personal in a space lit with soft-white lights and accommodating only 12 guests in an L-shape counter. There is an aspect to this experience that is Zen-like when it comes to the decor as well as incense burning at the beginning. Chef Yoshi works in harmony with 2 other chefs to bring 20 courses to each diner, taking turns as the others prepare for the next course.
The food is so aesthetically pleasing and light. It's not heavily dressed in sauce or garnishes and lays naked for you to see, to taste, and to savor. The flavors linger on your tongue while your brain tries to decipher the complexity in the simplicity. For once, you believe that less is more.
The sake pairing is impeccable and brings the experience to another level. It accentuates the after-taste of the food. One sip, two sip; you are happy and start losing count.
The whole experience lasts roughly 1.5 hours. If you arrive early, relax with some pre-dinner drink at Watertrade. If you didn't book drink pairing with the omakase, I'd recommend that you get something from the bar that you can enjoy while dining. Also, there is wine and tea pairing besides sake. Valet parking is free in front of the South Congress hotel, so you don't have to tire yourself out with finding a parking space before the meal.
The bill might break your piggy bank but the experience is priceless. Treat yourself to this bliss.
Best Sushi place in the states, I grew up in Japan
Reservations is a must and so worth it. I know itโs very expensive, but your mouth will thank you. Glory be that the main chef is Japanese and knows what he is doing. Beautiful to look at and more importantly a divine ride for your tastebuds. My husband- then boyfriend took me and he is always hungry after we eat sushi! Lol this was the first time he was full and not because of large portions of the same thing. You see everything because you are sitting right at the sushi bar and it is like a extravagantly time dance. So hard to take your eyes away to eat. I do recommend getting drinks before hand elsewhere since the choices were not that good. Only offer Japanese liquor, which I get, but liquor is not their expertise.
Be the first to ReplySadly will not be back for a 3rd visit, real letdown.
This was our 2nd visit.
Sadly the restaurant appears to be trying to make as much money as possible by seating 3 dinner services in one evening. If you have been you will know how much of a massive mistake that is.
The front kitchen has 2 chefs making most of the food. They physically can't cope. It took us 1 hr 30 mins to get our 1st course, which was two pieces of sushi. No issues on the size, but the next course took another 30 minutes.
The whole experience of sitting and watching your food being cooked in front of you has gone as such, as the chefs have little interaction as they have a whole list of orders to get through.
We were sat 30 minutes late. Informed when we sat down we had to order everything we wanted straight away. I asked if we can order more towards the end if need be. They said yes.
Towards the end I asked to order more food and told in a very rude way we couldn't and had to leave. At this stage we were up to $250 already and still hungry. I asked to speak to the manager. He apologized and said it was a misunderstanding.
Overall for $300 it was no where near anything I've experienced at that price. The food is reasonable but again it isn't a wow factor.
We will not be going back.
more flavors in one meal than I've ever experienced
The matron of a family with whom I lived in Japan used to say that you needed to eat at least 30 different foods a day. The chefs at Otoko made sure I met my requirements for the month - every bite was an explosion of flavor. It was so difficult for my brain to catch up with my senses - and so much fun!
Although it is true that the server keep the meal moving along relatively quickly, it is still a 2 - 2.5 hour dining experience so that is completely understandable. Our servers were very accommodating about our slightly slower pace, and were also very helpful with our questions.
Tips: my wife and I shared a wine pairing, which was just right for the two of us, instead of getting two separate wine flights. Also, make sure to let Otoko know well in advance what your dietary restrictions are - they did an amazing job meeting ours, so I would be surprised if there were any they could not meet, but I am sure they would have trouble making any of those adjustments without substantial notice.
A mixed bag
My family and I were very excited about landing a reservation at tiny and popular Otoko. We are avid fans of Japanese food having traveled to Japan many times and eaten at great Tokyo restaurants. Otoko's food and presentation were very very good. But we were dismayed by a truculent attitude of the chef and wait staff that made our experience quite uncomfortable. I have never had this experience in Austin before where the food scene is friendly and celebratory. I am not sure I would return despite a delicious and authentic meal.
Disappointing Dining Experience
First things first, the food at Otoko was stellar. It was everything we were expecting from the rave reviews Chef Yoshi has received. Entering the bar and restaurant is quite an experience. It feels like a sanctuary. The dark, cool space was a nice balance to the scorching heat outside. Having recently dined at Le Bernardin, Per Se and Blue Hill in Manhattan, what struck me is that dining at Otoko is just as expensive as these Michelin rated restaurants, but it totally lacks the sophistication and finesse that one expects when spending over $1200 on a dinner for 4. Perhaps Chef and his waiters should fly to NY, and take some notes on stellar service. The experience of dining at Otoko should have exceeded our expectations, and it did not, so I donโt believe the prices are justified. And Chef was no where in sight when we left. A gracious thank you would have been a nice touch, considering that only 12 guests can be accommodated at any given time. Our celebratory meal was a let down. I cannot recommend this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience - amazing service
Had an incredible meal at Otoko, was my first time doing an omakase in the united states and Otoko surely did an amazing job. The interior design is absolutely amazing, and the level of service given is a 10/10. I would come back in a heartbeat, although I do think it is a little overpriced.
Giving Otoko a 4.5/5 because having been to Uchi more than 5 times, I truly think the quality of sushi is almost identical, with the price paid for Otoko I was expecting fish quality to blow away Uchi, which was not the case.
