A wonderful creative restaurant
I loved this restaurant! I was taken here by my brother, who lives nearby. What I loved so much was the originality of the menu. And what I loved most of all was the chicken entree. Quite possibly the best chicken I have ever had. Huge portions all around--we had 3 appetizers and one entree and we were stuffed. No room for dessert. Just a lovely meal with unusual offerings.
Be the first to ReplyGood taco place but a Michelin star ?
A Mexican restaurant that makes a decent effort to be creative. However it baffles me that Michelin granted a star for this.I wonder if they have to reach a certain quote in handing out stars…. Taco’s were fine and original, the chicken signature dish was sadly a disappointment ( undercooked) and the curd dessert with black sesame was fascinatingly inedible. I kept on trying but to no avail. The table service was efficient , friendly and helpful. However , if we wouldn’t have read the reviews in advance, we would have walked away at the reception.Arrogant & ice cold attitude by one of the ladies . Luckily her colleagues took over once she was not on the stand
Be the first to ReplyWell deserved Michelin star
This restaurant had been on my to-do list but was usually booked when I made it to NYC. Oddly, on a Thursday, the next Saturday had space at 6pm. Nice looking place with excellent service, but mostly it was the food that was outstanding. We started with their version of guacamole. It was more elaborate than most, a really great mix of tomato, cheese and of course avocado flavors. Then a few tapas sized dishes. Tuna tostada, the tuna a bit marinated on an interesting toasted tortilla, was exce;;emt. Maybe the most interesting dish was their market corn tlayuda, a sort of pizza with corn, aged cheese and interesting spices. We also had the lamb tacos, also excellent. Finally we tried one big dish: the chicken a la brazas. It was a BBQ half chicken with a complex and wonderful sauce. The only small disappointment were two frozen drinks that seemed to be a specialty. Our waiter gave us small tastes of each, one we both found too spicy and the other boring. We did enjoy two other special cocktails, one was Jaguar, but I can't remember the name of the other. Anyway, only a few people read this review, because I really want to be able to get reservations on my next NY visit!
Be the first to ReplyExceptional food and service
From start to finish the experience of dinning at Oxomoco was exceptional. The food was beautifully flavoured, every course a new bought new and exciting tastes. The atmosphere was welcoming and the service first class. Our host Elizabeth deserves a special mention as she went above and beyond and made it a truly amazing experience. We cannot recommend Oxomoco enough!
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely Worth the Hype-Excellent Value
If you have no other reason to visit Greenpoint Brooklyn than a stop at 1* Oxomoco, then you’re in for a great visit. We’ll-crafted, SUPER-tasty, fresh and innovative Mexican cuisine at its finest. Excellent service in a relaxed atmosphere with unique cocktails. Every dish was superb!! I’d have to say, it was the best guacamole I ever had, and the lamb barbacoa tacos were phenomenal. Hats off to Team Oxomoco and to chefs Justin and Emilio for superb cuisine.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place to meet old and new friends
Very welcoming with great atmosphere. Lunchtime meet for cocktails and food. We recommend the spicy mango margarita and frozen cocktails. Presentation and quality of food were top quality. Make sure to use the toilet!

Be the first to ReplyFlavorful and creative tacos
I visited oxomoco for a friend’s birthday dinner. The food was very flavorful, especially the sauces used on the tacos. Oxomoco had tasty vegetarian options. Out of the 5 dishes we tried the sweet potato tlayuda and Pollo a las brazas were our favorites. I was very impressed by the layers of flavor and savoriness of the sweet potato tlayuda. We were a bit skeptical about the patio seating since it’s cold out ( indoor dining was booked) but the restaurant provides a heated and enclosed patio that’s well insulated. I will definitely return.

Be the first to ReplyWorst Customer Service ever. Don’t host an event here!
Worst customer service ever. Want to host a Rehearsal dinner there. Are 8 emails kindly requesting information enough? Try calling them and always getting a voicemail and unsurprisingly, the mailbox is always full. We are also from Mexico and it shames us that you project that level of low service. To all readers please bear note that that is not the normal case. Don’t know what happened to Oxomoco… the arrogance of success? Lost us as customers.
Be the first to ReplyMichelin Star For Food, Perhaps, But Not For Service
We picked this restaurant for our son's 21st birthday based on the stellar reviews and the Michelin star. We called ahead to have a dessert ready for our celebration and were seated in the patio when we arrived. The spicy margaritas, and especially the version with Mezcal, were excellent. We had a range of starters that were also top notch, especially the tuna tartare with caviar and the various salsas that were served with crispy and tasty full-sized tortillas. We ordered our mains and that's when the service essentially disappeared. The food was delivered by staff other than our server and we had to ask to get our server's attention. More on that later. The main courses of lamb tacos and chicken were excellent. The fish taco was a bit more ordinary. The fried rice with the chicken and the beef tartare were very good as well. And now back to our deteriorating service. It took 15 minutes for our gloved server to appear and clear our table after we had finished eating. We waited further and again had to request our server. When she finally reappeared she apparently had no idea of our birthday dessert request. My wife then got up and spoke to another person to (re)request a birthday dessert. After sorting that out at the reception area, dessert was finally served with a candle. After another delay and now being the only party seated in the patio area, I requested our check from the person at the check-in area and explained that our server had gone missing multiple times. Rather than the manager coming to our table, our server then returned to confront me about my complaint stating 'it was not my intention ignore you'. Interesting response. Anyway, we have several other top New York city restaurants lined up for the rest of our trip and fully expect much better experiences.
Be the first to ReplyNot your Grandma's Mexican resturant
This is one of our son's favorite restaurants in Brooklyn; he shared his find with us. For the 3 of us we ordered 2 of the LAMB BARBACOA TACOS (son's favorite), SHRIMP CEVICHE TOSTADA (my favorite), SOYA MARINATED TUNA TOSTADA, and CHIPS AND SALSA (the husband insisted and we all enjoyed experimentling with the different salsas). For dessert, there was a basil flavored custard with raspberries which our son enjoyed very much. For drinks, we enjoyed the UNA NOCHE SIN FIN and the CLASSIC MARGARITA. The staff was friendly, professional and worked well together. Our table was ready for our 6:15 reservation.
Be the first to ReplyCreative and delicious food!
The food and drinks were delicous and original. Everything we ordered was great. However, why I did not rate this five stars was due to the fact that we felt we were rushed. We ordered our appetizers and were not yet sure of our main course. The waiter advised us that they prefer if we would order all at once. We assured the waiter we would decide shortly, we could see a manager watching over when we would order the main course. I felt that this took away from the experience as this is not a cheap restaurant where you want to eat and run.
Be the first to ReplyGreat restaurant, great manager, subpar staff
First, HUGE kudos to the manager for helping us secure a reservation! We had a sudden change of plans through no fault of our own and they were awesome at trying to get us in. We also loved the atmosphere/styling of the restaurant. But it's really about the food. Overall, it was a great meal. I loved my fish taco (may have been a special) - it was excellent. And the chips/salsa were great. The smoked mango wasn't my favorite though - just seemed a bit like spicy dried fruit and the desserts weren't standouts. But we would return for the other overall enjoyable entrees. That said, what was disappointing was our server. After he took our order, he was pretty much non-existent. We had to flag people to bring us water and drink refills, silverware, and honestly anything else we wanted. I actually wondered if something had happened and he left or our table got switched to another server. Ultimately, I'd catch a glimpse of him, but not at our table. The other thing is we ordered a meat entree that took about an hour to come to the table. We had eaten all other food and were finished but had to keep waiting for that one dish. We asked about it because we honestly thought they just forgot when he said it took extra time. But that should've been told to us when we ordered it. An hour for a dish to arrive is pretty lengthy if all other dishes are long finished. Probably just an off night for that server. Again - we'd go back no question. And super thanks to management for making it happen.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing, order that Tuna!
Before going to NY did a bit of research and got excited for Oxomoco and was not disappointed! The tuna tosata was honestly one of the best thing I have eaten. Also, had great seats sitting looking into the kitchen. If just two of you would recommend trying to get these. Was awesome seeing the chefs at work but was hard not to order everything!
Be the first to ReplyMust-try restaurant!
When planning my trip to New York I decided to book in advance a table in Oxomoco after researching a few options in NY Michelin Guide. The place didn’t disappoint! Food was pretty laid back but extremely tasty - the chefs manage to give a special and unique touch to classics of the Mexican cuisine.
Be the first to ReplyWi will not visit the restaurant again.
Unfortunately, neither the food nor the restaurant lived up to our expectations. The food was ok but nothing sensational. The restaurant is quite loud and noisy so the overall impression is average, means that we will not visit the restaurant again.
Be the first to ReplyDO NOT MISS!
We literally had to go through a concierge in order to get *any* reservations there and that was with 3 weeks notice. The only ones we could get were at 5:30 and when we arrived at 5:25 there was a line down the block of folks wanting to get in. We soon discovered that this was for very good reason. Emilio Cerra earns every bit and then some of that Michelin star for his inventive but down to earth perfectly executed food. Takes someone who really knows what he's doing to make a guacamole app something diners still talk about days later (it was the transcendently grilled and smoked tomatoes.) Don't miss the tuna tostado, the asparagus and morel tacos, the pollo a las brazas, and the tilefish tacos. Mr Cerra and his staff are the ones to watch.
Be the first to ReplyMexican gastronomy
Our last family dinner in NYC: Sunday 17th April, booked well in advance. The restaurant with external white walls almost emerges from the ground in this relatively unattractive part of Brooklyn (maybe a dark night feeling). Outside terrace was covered and once the main door is pushed, you can feel an immediate positive feeling : softened light, nice lay-out with lateral tables using bench seats, nice music (not too loud) and atmosphere, with a large open kitchen at the back. The "disco bathroom" is a funny experience! :) Menu list is not large which is a guarantee of freshness. We started with Guacamole, Escabeche (pickled vegetables and fruits) and Popcorn, taken with a classic Margarita (the latter so well done that we continued our dinner with it!). The rest was a collection of subtle flavours, well seasoned and spiced food (a tad too much for our daugther) and originality (not for the sake of it). The soya tuna and shrimp ceviche tostada, on their own, were a must and enough to justify its Michelin star. Portions and proportions were well made (we had this good feeling of having eaten enough when we left and that's coming from very good eaters). Staff was friendly, accommodative, efficient and professional. All counted: - 3 appetizers, - 4 tostadas (relatively large tacos), - 3 tacos (served x 2), - 2 larger dishes (Aguachile: superb and tonnato) - 1 chocolate cake we shared - 2 soft drinks and 5 classic margaritas For slightly less than $350, tax included. Sounds to me fairly priced for a 1-star Michelin in this crazy expensive NYC. I would definitely return and I can only warmly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyLots of sour and spice
Interior decor is great! Staff kind, friendly, and attentive.
Now on to the food, true star of the meal was the the dessert!
Get the chicken, and lamb barbacoa tacos. Everything else? I'll admit I was biased and suspiciously didn't enjoy much of it.
I had a canker sore and chips, spice, sour are definitely not a good mix for that.
I wondered why I didn't enjoy my dishes quite as much as I had expected and realized because most the dishes very spicy / sour / tangy. The only dishes I loved were the non spicy ones (listed above).
-Chips and salsa: 4 large chips paired with six house salsas each leveling up in spice. I did try all of them and by the end my mouth was on fire...
- Guac and chips: 4 large chips paired with super fresh guac with a spicy jalepeno kick.
- black bass aguachile negro: super fresh black bass morsels in a lovely poured over squid ink sauce. Menu mentioned grilled portobello, and they were present but in really tiny pieces. As a mushroom lover, I craved more.
- Shrimp ceviche toastada: one large circular tortilla chip with fresh shrimp and something spicy with cilantro (shrimp was super fresh here)
- spring pea tlayuda: not my favorite and would vote to skip. Lots of cilantro and greens? This one was forgettable
- lamb barbacao tacos: 2 stuffed tacos on soft tortilla. Lamb was not super gamey (which I appreciate)
- pollo las brazas: my favorite! 1/2 chicken perfectly spiced and baked? While still juicy and succulent paired with a fresh salsa, red rice, 4 pieces soft tortilla on the side
- hoja santa: if I could get the recipe for this, I would be the happiest person. Strawberry flavors on an earthy refreshing sorbet that is hoja santa. I could lick the plate!
- chocolate cake: rich decadent chocolate brownie consistency on the bottom with espresso icecream on top. Definitely a must for those who love coffee/ chocolate and have a heavy sweet tooth.
3 tips:
1) For those with an aversion to cilantro (which I do not) beware! There's a lot of cilantro in their dishes.
2) Don't come if you have a canker sore.
3) Extra chips don't come for free
A journey for senses
A five star experience from start to finish ,service was amazing,présent but not overwhelming, food was out of this world and very well priced can’t recommend this place enough
Be the first to ReplyNice twist on Mexican food
Visited this place just before new year and was amazed with the vibe, everyone works with love. Open kitchen you can see the chefs preparing you tacos.
cocktails are really great and I fell in love with the smoked mango, the spicy hint gives it the right balance.
Had Tuna taco and it was really fulfilling.
I highly recommend this place.
Elevated Mexican Cuisine with a Latin Flair
Once again, my daughter selected a very good restaurant for her birthday celebration. It was a frigid night out and we appreciated the warm welcome and cozy atmosphere. Our party of five were seated at a booth, perfect for four, but a little too close for comfort and coats for our group. And before you ask, there was not a place for us to hang or place our coats while dining. Our waitress was a little slow in coming over to greet us and explain the lay of the land, but she got better as the meal progressed. After telling us about the specialty cocktails of the day and answering some questions, we ordered some excellent drinks. I had their equivalent to a Hot Toddy and it lived up to its' name. No more chills for me. The margarita of the day was a huge hit with my son and husband with just the right amount of spiciness. We next ordered our Para La Mesa with some suggestions from other diners reviews and our waitress. My favorites were the: popcorn (elevated by the addition of the Escabeche powder), sweet potato Tlayada (a family favorite), lamb Barbacoa tacos ( the salsa pipicha added a delicious zingy/robust flavor). The table favorite was the Soya marinated tuna tostada (I am not a fan of tuna so I cannot agree or disagree). We ordered only two desserts for the table so that we each got a taste. We decided not to order coffees and instead finished our wine and cocktails!! One dessert was chocolate and perfect for our group, especially the birthday girl. The waitress apologized because she requested a candle for the desserts, but the kitchen did not comply.
As I indicated above, the service got better as the meal progressed and we never felt rushed. Some people mentioned that the tables were too close together and the bar was crowded. This is true, but we felt Covid secure in our booth. And they did follow proper protocol by asking for proof of vaccination as we entered.
Not quite up to scratch
This review i write with a heavy heart- this was the place I expected most of our trip to New York to- and sadly it did not delivery this fully- it was not a bad evening but bear with me
During the pandemic Reviews for now will focus on 3 Parts
1. How they deal with the pandemic situation
2. Service and how it feels for Europeans (as this is what I am)- differences
3. Food, glorious food
We love Mexican food- we had some of the best food of our lives on a trip to Mexico and knew what those chefs are capable of so a Michelin starred Mexican place made our expectations sky high- perhaps unfairly so…
Clear vaccination policy, staff wearing masks, vaccination Status checked- but overcrowded bar and closely spaced tables 3/5
The service and communication was the best we had on this trip- we could book with ease, got confirmations and top comms from the front of houser manager Katharina- how to get to Brooklyn from our hotel, how long it takes etc… great
Our server Helmuth was very nice and made a good effort to make us forget that the table was not ready when we came- i do not expect this all the time as a value to be able to fix oh my dinner too, but was slightly unhappy as I had to sit at the overcrowded bar and once I had sat there for a while and a drinks order was eventually taken i needed to move. Small glitch only
So why the ‘bad’ ranking?
The Menü raised expectations higher but sadly did on this day not work for us- to the degree that I struggle to remember most of what we ate or any perks
Yes we had good guacamole and nice cevice but not standing over and above the quality of a Mexican chain restaurant in the UK like Wahaca for a fraction of the cost- a chicken dish was dry and the steak Bavette whilst good neither heart not excellent
Drinks were creative but again not overtly so
The atmosphere was nice and it had a cool, hipster vibe- but a michelin star? Sorry no- Ok food good to excellent service and a cool vibe is not enough for this- they seriously need to move up their game
Prices for this were not overtly excessive but too high
Sorry
