Fantastic wine selection combine with great choices of pastas. The octopus is also to die for. The ambiance combines rustic and cozy to make your dining experience perfect for friends, anniversaries, or dates.
Be the first to ReplyEverything about Peasant was absolutely perfect.
From the hostess who chatted it up with myself and my friends to our server who was very knowledgeable about the menu. Our food was served surprisingly quick. We ordered the Wood Roasted Oysters with Calamari, which was amazing! Then we had the M&M's Meatballs with Rib Eye Steak, incredible! With brussels sprouts, Polenta, and white beans. I'm a bourbon kinda guy so I went with the Sicilian Spice Rack. We also did dessert. Perfect, just perfect! I can't wait to come back here again and enjoy another wonderful evening.

Ambiance was so great, menu was exciting, wine list was stupid good and food was delicious. My issue and it's the only thing that kept it from being a perfect dining experience was the spacing of the courses. We ordered 3 courses; first one had 2 dishes, second course was one dish and third was two dishes. We felt super rushed to finish each course so they could drop the next one, zero space in between. With dishes this rich, you shouldnt be rushed but we definitely were. some of these dishes take days to prepare and we were given very little time to enjoy it. 3 courses, 5 dishes were served in less than an hour of being sat at our table. That is just not cool. We will definitely come back and I will continue to recommend this amazing restaurant but I would suggest talking to your server about slowing up the pace. Thanks for a delicious meal!

Let me start with they have an amazing wine selection no matter what stage you're in with drinking wine. Ambiance is very rustic and romantic. We were hoping for tasty items we experienced 10 years ago on our first date but sadly disappointed. The waiter was very attentive, although bus boy was a little confused or nervous he was making attempts to fill water glasses that were clearly full. The octopus lacked that chili spice we love and was swimming in breadcrumbs. The Caesar salad was amazing, fresh, crisp radicchio, kale, and in house croutons. The disaster came with suckling pig which was swimming in oil and lacked flavor and the smoked linguini also swimming in oil that we didn't eat much and went home much earlier than expected. Sadly we will not make another attempt to dine here.

I hadn't been to Peasant in a few years, since the new owners took over. All I can say is WOW! The food and service were amazing, better than I remembered, and I did like it a lot years ago. Our waiter Bobby was friendly and knew about each meal we ordered. A lovely woman, Karen, came to check on us and when we asked what the person next to us was eating, she brought us over a sample. Everyone went out of their way to say hello and the vibe in this restaurant was upbeat & fabulous. I now wish I had taken more photos of the food but I guess we ate it too fast. I included a these pictures of some of Peasants delicious food. We also thought the Tartare, rigatoni alla vodka and deserts were amazing too. I advise anyone to visit this gem of a restaurant the next time you want a fantastic meal & great service.

I've been going to Peasant for about 15 years and it's still my favorite Italian spot in the City. The grilled baby octopus and suckling pig are classics but I've never regretted an order there. Dark rustic ambience and the pro staff are great. Highly recommended date spot.

I hadn't been to Peasant in a long time, and I was glad I came back. The service was wonderful, we were not booted out and got to really savor the food and the wine. We sat in the back where I'd hoped it would be a bit more quiet. it was until about 7:30, when diners started being super loud(another the fault of the restaurant). The food was really great, the candles on the back bar made it feel cozy and welcoming. Going back next week with a larger party. Looking forward.
Be the first to ReplyThe Food was super good.
I also loved the look of the restaurant. The staff greater us and made us feel at home. My only complaint is how expensive it is.
Be the first to ReplyAmbiance is beautiful.
Perfect for drinks maybe but certainly not food. I had the carbonara which came in a jar (interesting). Aside from the serving size of most plates being for a small child, the pasta itself was quite bland and cold. Waiter was friendly!

We were headed to Manhattan a few weeks ago and have been wanting to try Peasant. We were lucky and found a parking spot right outside. We were greeted and seated right away. It's really beautiful inside. However, so dark that you can barely see the menu or food. Our server told us everything was for sharing. We ordered the burrata and octopus to start and then a pasta carbonara to share. Firstly, the drinks were delicious. The starters were so small. The burrata was nice, but half the ball was severed. So we shared. The octopus was nice, but again a small portion. The pasta, which was also to share was barely a normal one person serving. But, again, we shared.
Be the first to ReplyPacked and "very happening" .
The draw is the wood-fired oven.Had cocktails and split 2 appetizers - burrata and bone marrow oysters.Entrees were rosette pasta, carbonara (served from a jar after shaking), smoked linguine vongole, and yes - a strip steak ($58). The latter was deemed "superb" as although a fatty cut it worked well on the grill. No desserts. Throw in an $85 red wine and tip and damages for 4 were $475.A bit pricey? Service was good and the atmosphere is lively.
Be the first to ReplyNot tons of options but most of the food was very good.
Super cute and romantic spot. We had the pasta w vodka sauce, pasta with short rib and mushrooms - both delicious! For appetizers we had the bruschetta that was very good and the Buratta which didn't taste like much unfortunately. But the rest was great, including my rose wine!

We had dinner at the Peasant this evening and we had a lovely time. We ate downstairs in the wine bar.Sarah was our server/sommelier everything she recommended was excellent. She was bright and cheerful and made our experience fun. The service was great, the ambience is very old world farmhouse rustic. We didn't have a single bite that wasn't excellent.
Be the first to ReplyServing sizes were way too small.
Left hungry. Would not recommend unless you're looking to still be hungry after eating at a brand new Italian restaurant in Manhattan. Also the ricotta bread should be cut in three pieces not two pieces. My party of three ordered it with no way of cutting the Bread except butchering it with a butter knife. we weren't given a steak knife to further cut it for whatever reason.
Be the first to ReplyThey didn't have any seating for walks-in on a Thursday
They didn't have any seating for walks-in on a Thursday night, but we were told we could try downstairs. We entered a wine cellar looking place that was dark and moody with communal tables. It seems like a very vibey spot that all types of people can enjoy whether it be a family, couples or just friends. We ordered a round of drinks for the table and our waitress was very helpful in helping us choose. We also got the shrimp appetizer from their specials, calamari, and a couple of pastas. The shrimp was the star of the show with this flavorful glaze/seasoning on it. I also wish we had gotten the oysters because the table next to us got it and it smelled so good! We also got a round of espresso martinis for the table (they have different kinds!) at the end. Best espresso martini I've had! Overall, great experience with superb food and service. Looking forward to coming back and trying the upstairs :)

Marc Forgione is a chef we've had the pleasure of meeting several times, so it was no surprise that when he opened his new spot Peasant, we just needed to find a time to try it. And it certainly didn't disappoint. We invited a couple along for the experience making it all the more fun. We ordered the octopus, suckling pig and a few other dishes. Everything was outstanding, as is usual with Marc. The rustic interior and wood fired hearth made it all the more romantic. We highly recommend Peasant for your next occasion.
Be the first to ReplyI was at this lovely restaurant with a group of others.
As I got here a bit early, I sat down and ordered one of my favorite drinks, a negroni. After speaking with the friendly bartender noting what I tend to like and drink, he recommended the Chef's Negroni which had Vida Mezcal, Gran Classico, and Carpano Antica (vermouth) for $17. The drink which was on the bitter end (which is my definite preference) had a smokey finish to it and I can see why the bartender likes using mezcal. Very tasty and I would order again. Anyway, the rest arrived and we sat near the back. The only complaint I can make is that since we were so far back, it was very warm especially with all the candles as well as the big hearth behind us. I would almost recommend to dress lightly for this reason. The group I'm in tends to prefer separate checks (which tends to be an issue) and the very friendly waitress said pretty quickly that this was fine and there were zero issues here. For having six people, I have never had a wait staff from a non-fancy or non-Michelin spot be this okay with separate checks. Top notch in general to the waitstaff. They waited an appropriate amount of time to clear plates, refilled the waters whenever needed, and gave good recommendations to the other people. Anyway, as another individual and I were interested in a bunch of dishes, we decided to split an appetizer and a main dish as they were both the same price anyway and order separate desserts which worked perfectly. Our first appetizer was a special which was roasted beef tongue with a horseradish cream which was $19. The beef tongue was cooked perfectly with a wonderful texture being both soft and firm and this was one of the better ones in recent memory with the only ones better being likely from some Japanese spots. The horseradish cream was luckily subtle and it worked quite well. Less successful for the same price was the Di Palo's Burrata Spezzata with pesto Genovese and cherry tomato. Perfectly fine amount of cheese but I would have preferred more of the pesto. I also think an acidic element or something slightly sweet (perhaps balsamic glaze) or something similar would work well as I found it a bit one note. I believe someone else got a salad which I remember being quite large. Our two main dishes which were both $26 arrived at similar times both bubbling. My preference of the two was the Rosette with short rib, hen of the woods (mushroom,) and chestnut. The (al dente) pasta reminded me heavily of a lasagna and they were wrapped around (which apparently is why it's called Rosette.) It had something similar to a brown butter on the bottom and as per the description, it was quite rich and very delicious being my favorite dish of the night. The short rib had a soft texture with a meaty taste and the mushrooms added more richness. The chestnut again added even more extra texture and overall I would recommend it heavily. Our other choice was the popular Rotisserie Lamb Ragu with gnocchi alla Romana. Unlike the other dish, I would say that there wasn't enough of the lamb so it was mostly gnocchi with a cheese and tomato sauce. The gnocchi was an interesting take as from the top, it looked more like a lasagna. It was tasty but I wasn't sure if I was worth it for the price. Other people had the smoked linguine (which they liked but complained about the small portion,) and I believe the last person because they have gluten allergies had a whole fish from the specials menu which they loved. My dessert were the Fire Roasted Pears with ice cream and I think it was something around $12. I believe the ice cream on top was fior di latte/fresh cream ice cream and it was very tasty. It was chopped into small pieces likely consisting of one pear. The fire added a nice texture but I would say that this was a bit bland. Perhaps something else should have been added such as either nuts or some other type of sweet fruit and I might recommend it if you want something simple. The majority of people had the flour-less chocolate cake and I tried it and it was tasty. I remember it having the same type of ice cream also.I believe my rating for this restaurant might be a little bit elevated because of a couple of very specific factors. The first reason was the wonderful waitstaff which even compared to most other restaurants was exemplary. The second was that we happened to order two outstanding dishes in which case one of them was a special and the other one doesn't appear to have been reviewed by almost anyone (rosette) while the two more famous dishes (outside of the fact that many people get the suckling pig here) were the ones that we preferred less. I personally liked this place a lot but perhaps we got lucky.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
Downstairs it feels like an old European wine cellar. You will be eating in the catacombs with the help of a sommelier to walk you through the wine list. Upstairs is warm and dark with dim golden lights. The open oven brings the scents of the rotisserie hens, and herbs. I love the pasta here. I love everything here. This is definitely a place for a special occasion and especially welcoming during the winter months.
Be the first to ReplyI was super excited to try out Peasant, another Marc
I was super excited to try out Peasant, another Marc Forgione establishment (I love his restaurant in Tribeca). However, I would say that I was disappointed. The food was just ok. The best dishes were the bruschetta, which was topped with a smoked ricotta, and the Smoked Linguine. The other items we got, which were the sunfed shrimp, octopus and wood fire oysters were very forgettable. The Rosette was not very good. It was very gummy. The worst part of the night was when the lady who removed our dishes chose to remove them over my head. She ended up spilling shrimp juice on my hair and my face. I was also wearing a white sweater and it was a miracle she did not spill anything on my sweater! This has never happened to me at a restaurant before. She was apologetic after I had to tell her 3x about what had happened but it was still a mistake that was hard to overlook.
Be the first to ReplyI'd give it a 4.
5 if I couldWarm, chatty, aromatic dining room with view into the kitchenGreat burrata (creamy cheese, well seasoned and textured crostini)Nice rigatoni a la vodka, with a spicy finishPizza pecante crust / bread was yeasty and delicious, defied my expectation that it was too much bread not enough toppingGood service too

Peasant was an excellent visit! We went as a group of seven and the staff were very flexible when we added a few more attendees last minute. The ambiance of this restaurant is very romantic so I can see this being a great date night spot. We tried the buratta, several of the pasta dishes and a few desserts. All were great but the lamb Ragu and the flourless chocolate cake were highlights among the group. They also have delicious cocktails that I would recommend trying. Highly recommend checking out!
Be the first to ReplyProbably one of the best dinners I'be had in awhile.
My daughter and I came to eat after our matinee showing of Dear Evan Hansen. What a treat this was! The ambience was cozy and warm. We started with the burrata which was heavenly. I had the Rosette pasta which was off the charts delicious followed by the lemon meringue dessert. All the flavors melded perfectly. The waitstaff couldn't have been nicer. Only thing I'd change would be the selection of non alcoholic offerings. Maybe non alcoholic blended cocktails or Italian sodas. We will definitely be back!

.. the service was GREAT - from the front desk hostess to the busboys, everyone was nice and did their job happily; Our server was amazing, super sweet, patient, and came to check on us the perfect amount of times - not overwhelming. Now for the food... meh. I am a big believer of yelp reviews but this time it failed - we were truly disappointed. The menu was short so we ordered at least one item from each category; calamari, octopus, rigatoni, bucatini carbonara, pizza, snowdance chicken and veal braciole. Dessert was hazelnut cake.the positive: calamari was delicious; perfectly cooked - not chewy. Hazelnut cake was great... it was the consistency of a brownie - chocolatey goodness. the negative: 1. bucatini carbonara arrived in a small mason jar which was then shaken up in front of you and served. the excitement ended there. This dish didn't taste bad but it wasn't mind-blowing either. However this dish made a statement when the pasta only satisfied 3 fork-full... everyone literally had ONE bite. 2. the pizza was burnt; the crust, the bottom of the pizza was definitely more cooked than anyone would of liked.3. chicken was served cold, it felt like it was sitting in the kitchen forgotten. 4. veal arrived on a skewer, was good but it too was very charred - the dish consisted of 3 pieces of meat, everything else was garnish or onions.

If you're looking for a place that screams dark academia but also has amazing food and wine, peasant's wine bar is the place. As a group of four we had the calamari and the bruschetta to start, then ate the rigatoni alla vodka. The wine choices were exquisite and the vibes were immaculate.
