A lovely small restaurant hidden away in Melbourne.
Fantastic service and atmosphere. Highly recommended.

I had the oyster special and French beer . Everything tasted great and went down well. Well worth a visit.

If that's what you're looking for, Phillipe is it. Everything about this place screams "Paris" with one notable exception--the service is friendly, welcoming, efficient, and helpful. As with most French bistros, Phillipe shines at both lunch and dinner. The three course lunch menu of $65 including a 250ml carafe of either white or red wine (very good wine, by the way) is terrific value for food of this standard. I haven't eaten at dinner or ordered a la carte, but the menu is replete with French classics. The downstairs room is spacious and comfortable with well-spaced tables and an open kitchen. When you descend the stairs, you are confronted by the fridge proudly displaying the meat and poultry. This is not a vegetarian's paradise, although they are accommodated. I can't think of a better classic French bistro in Melbourne.

What a wonderful french restaurant at the 'Paris' end of the Melbourne CBD. The venue is tucked down a laneway despite its Collins St address, reminding you of so many restaurants in France as you descend the stairs into the suprisingly large basement space. I loved the varied dining spaces (bar, oyster bar or formal dining) and could have sat watching the chefs all night in their open kitchen. We pre-ordered the truffle chicken - a full bird served over two courses with accompanying vegetables and a very generous amount of truffle shavings. It was AMAZING. While we didn't need it, we finished with the signature chocolate fondant, quite simply, the best fondant I have ever eaten. Overall the experience was just what we needed - a little bit of pampering but done in a relaxed way. Next time we will be sure to try the foie gras, the onion soup and one of the many steaks...or if I get my way the duck breast will be on the menu!

My work colleagues and I enjoyed a marvellous dinner in the private room of this lovely basement restaurant. We had a 3 course menu that offered three good options per course. I enjoyed the terrine entree, barramundi main course and apple dessert. Everything was beautifully presented, deliciously prepared and discretely served. The wine list has several local and French varieties and our wines were all excellent. Overall this was a lovely dinner and I would recommend this restaurant to others wishing to have a special small function or dinner. Thank you, Phillipe.

With a city full of fusion menus, from all corners of the globe it's refreshing to experience a little bit of tradition and dine at restaurant that would make chefs François Pierre La Varenne and Marie-Antoine Carême proud grandparents. Philippe, a French inspired restaurant, off Collins Street below the Grand Hyatt Melbourne and is the brain child of Philippe Mouchel who is arguably one of Melbourne's finest French chef. Upon walking through the heavy ornate doors and descending the wooden stairs you are immediately taken to the heart of Paris, as you walk past the fully stocked bar, cheese table and open kitchen you can't help anticipate what's to come. Both the menu and wine list are extensive, which made it hard to decide what to order. After some internal battles I ordered the wagyu beef tartare, pomegranate, Pommery mustard, horseradish as an entree. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made at a restaurant. This was heaven on a plate, the beef melted in my mouth and the flavours just tripped the light fantastic on my tongue, with just the right amount of spice, which took the dish to another level. I was in the mood for beef so I opted for the Collinson & Co pasture raised porterhouse , cassis & red wine jus and ordered it rare. This was a beautiful piece of meet and cooked and seasoned with respect. Although it came out medium rare not rare it still melted in my mouth. The addition of the cassis & red wine jus was a perfect match to the perfect dish. I'm not one for dessert, but the menu just called out and demanded I order one. Michel Cluizel chocolate caramel fondant, vanilla bean ice cream was placed in front of me and all of a sudden my mouth started to water. This indeed was the perfect end to a perfect meal. The vanilla ice cream was creamy and silky with just enough vanilla that didn't over power the star of the dish, the molten chocolate. The only negative about our meal was the coffee. It was a little bitter for my taste, but with three near perfect dishes who really cares.

Serving his best food possible. Great food great location in the city of Melbourne. I love going into his restaurants the wait staff are always so professional ask them anything about the menu and they are happy to help. An amazing selection of all the best French dishes done perfectly. They also do happy hour 5-7pm so you can enjoy oysters and some bubbles.

The amazing Philippe Mouchel has popped up at 117 Collins st with amazing French flair at Philippe! This infamous spot has been previously occupied by Greg Malouf and Jamie Oliver! The entrance is down a laneway (George Parade) with stairs leading you down to the basement lined with long Zinc bars with living gardens on the walls. All the staff seem to have amazing French accents - adding to the ambient surrounds. As we headed to our seats, we walk past the open kitchen and enjoy listening to the sounds of the french language blend with the rich smells of french cuisine. We start with freshly baked bread and house churned butter as we contemplate what to order.. We try the melt in your mouth Quail and foie gras parfait topped with a red currant & orange jelly served with toasted brioche - amazing! Now that we've wet our appetite we choose the Rockling, soupe de poisson, celery & seafood risotto with sauce rouille and the Mayura Station wagyu rump cap 300gm served with potato fondante, broccoli & sauce béarnaise! Both dishes were perfect in flavour, presentation and size. There is an extensive wine list to choose from too. For dessert, we couldn't go past the decadent Michel Cluizel chocolate fondant with morello cherry and the light and airy Floating Island served with hazelnut praline & vanilla sauce! The restaurant was fairly busy for a Monday night so remember to book ahead! Ah Philippe - Vous remplissez mon cœur et de l'estomac avec joie!
