So good
You must come with a group to truly enjoy all their dishes. We all look forward to their famous deep-fried chicken wings. We also had their multi flavor balls of noodle soup, beef luc lac, carpaccio, special fried rice, dry noodle, on choy, and fish. Expect long waits if you can not make a reservation (group). Surprisingly, they do not open late.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service
Phnom Penh has been a favorite in our family for years. While not a fancy restaurant, the food here is great and the service is always friendly and quick. My husband and I have tried many different things but the butter beef is a must to order. It's a great place for lunch if you are in Vancouver.

Food is very overrated the only good dish we got was the butter beef other than that their hu tieu flavor is very weak and beef rice too rich

Be the first to ReplyFantastic say & pepper chicken wings
Delicious, flavourful dishes with a relaxed open-concept vibe. The butter beef was nice, a first for me. Probably not something I would order again before I get a chance to run through the rest of their menu. The salt & pepper chicken wings were fantastic - great texture & very flavourful
Be the first to ReplyThe best Cambodia restaurant with Vietnam influence in Vancouver
The food is outstanding but the queuing is a bit ridiculous coz I need to wait about 45-60min in order to get the table. Once you get your food, you feel like your tired n hungry is relief
Be the first to ReplyDid not disappoint
The food was amazing and well worth the typical 1+ hour wait for a table for lunch. They have a text message queue so we went walking around Chinatown to pass the time. The butter beef should not be missed.
Be the first to ReplyNot worth the line up and money
I really have no ideas why this restaurant became so hot in Vancouver, every time I passed by there’s a long line up . Today I was doing grocery right beside and too lazy to drive to another place so I decided give it a try again ( after the first time I said not coming back again but I did, I know it’s stupid). I ordered 3 dishes, amok, wings ,beef rice. 1. Amok, $27.50, I thought a dish close to $30 should be a good dish , even though the taste not good but a good presentation should still there , just looks at the pic , I’m speechless.2, one of the famous items chicken wing, $17.80 for 7 little pieces whole chicken wing, and I think is kinda pricy and it just tastes just fair. 3, one the famous dishes again-beef rice , the beef is really minced, If was not told , I can’t even taste that’s beef, also have not ideas why this is a famous dish in store. I can only taste it’s sweetness nothing else, no Cambodian spices flavour at all. At the first visit I ordered 7 items for two of us , was so disappointed, that’s why I only ordered 3 dishes today, but ALSO VERY DISAPPOINTED again, I will not come back for sure. The reason I leave 3 stars , just because the place is clean all the things I can see in store , and also even tho line up, the front door arrangement still in order. But the food just …… especially the amok, just like sh*t, how can they charge $27.50?
Be the first to ReplyNot worth the wait
1 hour wait at 5 on a weekday. Food was nothing special. I agree with others that if you must have their food, take it to go and enjoy it at home.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is an institution and it’s easy to see why!
Amazing food had by all three of our party. Our favourites were the Chicken Curry and the Butter Beef, absolutely amazing!! Love this restaurant and worth the two hour wait for a table, (went to the pub on the corner and they sent a text when table was ready). Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyPhnom Phen Cambodian Restaurant, Vancouver, BC Canada
My son, a visitor from London, UK wanted to enjoy the Cambodian food at Phnom Penh in Chinatown, Vancouver, BC , Canada. Sad that Vancouver Chinatown is fast changing as many old and traditional shops has closed- worst still are the many vandalism and graffiti. However, there are signs of new boutique eateries emerging. The Phnom Penh restaurant is still very popular as we had to wait for about 15 minutes before we have a table - the food at the Phnom Penh restaurant is still very good.
Be the first to ReplyIF YOU LIKE CAMBODIAN FOOD THIS IS THE PLACE
I lived in Cambodia for three months and this restaurant brings me back to a place and time that many did not survive to share their history. The staff will help you decide what to order if you are not familiar with Cambodian food. Try not to go the tourist route and order what seems to be familiar because you will miss out on the true experience of Cambodia. Let them know that you are willing to delve into the food culture. Plan to put your name in and wait at least thirty minutes. There is an Irish bar next door to enjoy a stout while you wait. My friends, take a moment to truly appreciate the history of Cambodia we are fortunate to have survivors to share their exquisite cuisine with the world.
Be the first to ReplyButter beef, chicken wings and steak luc lac
Lucky we made a reservation because there’s a line to get in! Even for a Monday night, it was busy! We pre-ordered two of the steak Luk lac - pricey but tasty, butter beef and deep fried chicken wings - excellent as usual, fried rice and beef/tendon noodle soup. Excellent food and service.
Be the first to ReplyMust have butter beef and wings
Good food and fast service. Within 10 mins food came out. Very busy all time of the day reserve or else wait outside. They limit you to 2 hrs since they always busy even with large table.
Be the first to ReplyThe Holy Trinity
On top of covering their history and numerous accolades (including a hand-written note from the late Anthony Bourdain), my earlier review of Phnom Penh focused exclusively on their chicken wings. After trying them during their “takeout-only” phase, I made a personal commitment to return and experience Phnom Penh's “holy trinity” once dine-in had resumed. Fast-forward nine months.
The Province has moved into Stage 3 of its restart plan (after briefly flirting with Stage 4). Under this stage, a small semblance of normalcy has resumed, though a number of COVID protocols remain in place, i.e.: the need for physical barriers in some settings; the ongoing requirement for face-masks; and, more recently, proof of vaccination is required when entering non-essential services (think restaurant). While far from perfect, it’s still better than where we were about a year and a half ago. And more relevant to this review, Phnom Penh has finally re-opened for dine-in under this stage of the Province’s plan.
We arrived shortly after 12PM. Much to my surprise, there were only 2 other patrons in line ahead of us. As such, we only had to wait about 10 minutes for a (rather large) table to open up. It’s clear to me that Phnom Penh is still operating on a reduced capacity level, even though this is technically not required. I applaud this because it demonstrates that Phnom Penh isn’t all about profit over guest and staff safety.
Given that we were here for the fabled “Holy Trinity” it should come as no surprise that we ordered exactly that: Chicken Wings, Butter Beef and Beef Luc lac . . . well, and the Lemongrass chicken (we couldn’t help it). Anyway, all the food came rather quickly – I’d say within about ten minutes.
CHICKEN WINGS: I, and practically everybody else, have commented on these at length already; so, I’ll only say that my original comment remains: These wings truly are “chicken wing execution on another level.” With their deceptively simple seasoning (rock salt, sugar, white pepper, garlic and a pinch of MSG), these wings are crispy on the outside and literally bursting with flavour on the inside. They’re accompanied by a lemon sauce for dipping, but this isn’t needed. While I can’t definitively say these are Vancouver’s “best” chicken wings, they should, without question, make everybody’s “top 3” for sure.
BUTTER BEEF: I will confess some initial trepidation upon ordering this dish, if only because I’m not really big on raw meat; however, it is part of the “holy trinity,” so I committed to trying it. The flat, rare beef (it’s not completely raw) is laid out on a plate, soaked in a marinade of soy vinaigrette and topped with a heavy amount of garlic and cilantro. This presentation, while simple, is effective and inviting. After trying the dish, I can see why it’s so popular and where the name “butter beef” comes from: When you put it in your mouth, it practically “melts” like butter. The dish, overall, is refreshing and light. For someone who usually doesn’t order “raw meat,” I made quick work of the butter beef and wouldn’t hesitate to order it again.
BEEF LUC LAC: Of the 3 dishes in Phnom Penh’s “trinity,” the beef luc lac was my least favourite. While it’s large enough to be shared by two people, and therefore offers some good value-for-money, it just didn’t grab me. There was technically nothing wrong with the dish. The rice was fine, the veggies fresh and the beef was tender; however, it was . . . one note for me. The beef, with its beurre rouge sauce, was the only component of the dish with any notable flavour – and even that was a tad on the rich side. But I suppose your mileage may vary?
LEMONGRASS CHICKEN: While not one of the holy “trinity,” we decided to give Phnom Penh’s lemongrass chicken w/ rice a try. In short, it was a fairly large portion but the chicken, when mixed with rice, hit all the right notes. The lemongrass flavour permeated the tender and juicy chicken while the rice served as a nice counterbalance. Having sampled numerous lemongrass chicken dishes over the years, we can say the version on offer at Phnom Penh is technically sound and delicious.
FOOD: 4/5
SERVICE: 5/5
VALUE: 5/5
RECOMMENDATION: In retrospect, we ordered way too much food; however, most everything was delicious. The signature chicken wings and butter beef are definite “must have” items. The lemongrass chicken also managed to hold its own. I think if you want a “legendary” dining experience in Vancouver, Phnom Penh should be on your radar. Highly recommended!

amazing wings
I don't even need to write this review and you can read all the others. the wings here is on a whole other different level. the way they marinated apparently is a fushion between cambodia and viet style, which is just so unique yet fantastic in taste. the best way i could describe it is that the marianting is salting, while a very small hint of sugar is coated on the outside with some peanut crunch.
Be the first to ReplyChicken Wing Execution on Another Level
We came upon Phnom Penh quite by chance. My partner was attending a hair appointment and, while there, her stylist mentioned that Phnom Penh was home to the “best” wings in Vancouver. I’m not sure how that came up in conversation but, being something of a chicken wing aficionado, I made it a point that we should check them out. Given that the restaurant was only a 15-minute walk from our hotel, we decided to make the trek into Chinatown for some delightful snack treats.
The fact that I only learned of Phnom Penh’s existence a few weeks ago is kind of surprising. I say that for a couple of reasons: 1) The restaurant has been in operation since 1985, which is practically a lifetime by today’s standards; and, 2) They’ve been covered extensively in print and digital media for the better part of two decades, if not longer. From positive critical reviews to prestigious “top 10” lists, Phnom Penh has clearly earned the massive number of accolades highlighted on their walls. Heck, you know an establishment is noteworthy if Anthony Bourdain leaves you a hand-written note of thanks!
But then when you’re walking through Chinatown – a rather sketchy area at that – none of the accolades and praise really crosses your mind. I remember saying to my partner, as we continued our trek, “These chicken wings had better be good!” Seriously, parts of this area were very reminiscent of Hastings and Main. When we finally reached Phnom Penh, we learned it was “take-out only.” While kind of irritating, this inconvenience was all on us for not checking earlier. As such, we placed an order for their famous chicken wings “to go.” Since we had about 15 minutes to kill, we decided to explore more of Chinatown’s seedy underbelly.
We returned in time to collect our bounty and made off to a quiet corner (outside) to enjoy. Indeed, expectations were high. When you have notable sites like Lonely Planet refer to Phnom Penh as a “local-legend” and FollowMeFoodie declare that the wings are “not just chicken wings,” one cannot help but think they’re about to bite into the wings of God. Once we were settled and opened our takeout container, we both agreed that the wings didn’t look all that exciting; however, it soon became clear that Phnom Penh focuses much more on flavour and taste than they do hoity-toity presentation.
The chicken wings at Phnom Penh are lightly battered, crispy on the outside but very juicy on the inside. They’re seasoned with simple yet effective ingredients (rock salt, white pepper, sugar, and what is likely a bit of MSG), and are accompanied by a nice lemon sauce, which adds another layer of flavour but in all honesty isn’t really needed. The wings essentially speak for themselves. After just one bite, we understood why these wings have been declared some of the best – if not THE best – in the city. They have an undeniably delicious flavour and represent chicken wing execution on another level.
FOOD: 5/5
SERVICE: 5/5
VALUE: 5/5
RECOMMENDATION: Once Phnom Penh reopens for dine-in service, we’d love to return and try their “Holy Trinity” signature items: The wings (already confirmed as phenomenal!), butter beef and beef lucluc. All three look most enticing and undoubtedly highlight why this establishment has become a noted “Vancouver classic.” If you haven’t tried their wings, you don’t know what you’re missing out on! Highly recommended!

Cambodian and Vietnamese takeout
PP is ONLY doing takeout and the lines are longish but not as long as pre covid. They have a good system. We had chicken wings, chicken lemongrass and Kai Lan Beef. The two chicken dishes were tasty, good, and yummy. The beef dish did not have much flavor so I added a bit of Sriracha. The takeout preparation was good.

My son and his girl friend wanted to order from Phnom Penh because someone they know says it is very good.
For us it was nothing to write home about. We found it bland. Only thing that was good were the chicken wings. But then again there are lots of restaurants that cook good chicken wings.
Unfortunately both my wife and I had upset stomachs after dinner. My stomach was also upset the next day. This has rarely happened to me. Thus I have given them a poor rating.
The best!
Precovid twelve of us enjoyed a great meal. We had some many delicious dishes: deep fried chicken wings, garlic squid, 3 types of ball noodle
soup, fish cake, filet beef luc lac on rice, and hot pot. You come here to enjoy the flavours and not count calories. You leave here so satisfied
and want to come back again.
Fried rice
Used to be one of the best if not the best Yang Chow fried rice in town. Just took out an order and it was inedible to say the least. The rice was very crumbly and not fried...it was merely mushily mashed together. It was also missing or lacking the most basic essentials - peas, carrots, etc. Very disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyWhat’s with the hype?!
I ordered a beef noodles plate that would have been more aptly named cartilage noodle plate. There was nothing edible in this order as even the noodles, while being separated, were already soft and mushy.
A truly disappointing experience.
Big let down
We ordered 4 dishes for take out: pho, sugar-salt chicken wings, hot and sour soup, and salad rolls. We didn't like the mystery meat on the pho, the hot and sour soup was not good, and the salad rolls were mediocre. We loved the wings and threw out the soup. This was a very disappointing experience.
