A gastronomic journey with every detail perfectly considered
Having always wanted to try a tasting menu, I treated my wife and I to a meal at Pidgin while on a weekend trip to London. We went in not knowing exactly what to expect - would we be overly full with ten courses, or still hungry after tiny plates? Would we need more wine than the paired flight provided, or would it be too much? When would the wines come, given ten courses and five wines? The simple answer is - relax, it's all taken care of, these guys know what they are doing. Every detail was perfectly considered. Each course showed the depth of knowledge and skill of the chefs; top quality ingredients shone through in every dish, the flavours, textures, every aspect of every element had been thought through meticulously - as had the wine pairing. It's a small restaurant (maybe 20 covers), meaning the waiting staff are extremely attentive, bringing everything out almost presciently at the moment you are ready for it. The wines were outstanding, and matched each dish perfectly. The set menu (officially five "courses", but actually ten if you count every amuse bouche, palate cleanser etc) cost ยฃ65 and the accompanying wine flight was ยฃ48. We were given the option of supplements, either individually priced, or the lot for ยฃ20. We went for the lot - in for a penny, in for....well, twenty pounds! These included a cheese course, caviar on the fish, wild honey truffle on the duck, and, it may sound simple, but an incredible sardine ceviche with the bread course that made it sing. Well worth going for the extras, as the chefs here know what they are doing, so you might as well let them do their thing. My face hurt from smiling by the end of the evening because of the sheer gastronomic joy the meal brought us. One dish - duck leg suet pudding with celeriac and the aforementioned honey truffle - genuinely gave me goose bumps, the most incredibly thought out dish I have eaten for a very long time, possibly ever. What makes this place incredible is that they change the menu every week, and never repeat a dish. Quite how they can achieve this standard of culinary excellence when they change the menu every week is beyond me. As another review writer said, *do* believe the hype. Let the chefs at Pidgin take you on a culinary journey, relax and enjoy!

Very good dinner. Fantastic tasting menu with lots of clever cooking and new taste combinations. Fantastic cocktails and a reasonably priced wine list. There was one service slip up which was remedied with a free cheese course. This place is very good indeed.

I made the mistake of reading the Tripadvisor reviews for Pidgin after bookingโฆand almost cancelled as a result. Iโm delighted to say that I didnโt. The food, wine pairings and service were superb. Nine courses for ยฃ65 is amazing value compared to some other London restaurants and the service is exactly what you would expect - not in your face, but donโt miss a thing! I will definitely go back.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
I had been wanting to visit Pidgin for years, so when a friend invited me as a birthday treat, I couldnโt have been happier. Unfortunately, the meal was rather uninteresting: I was there two nights ago and I canโt remember what I ate! It wasnโt bad, but at ยฃ65 per head really really not worth it. What made it worst though was having the bill dropped at our table (unrequested) the moment we had the last bite, quickly followed by the waiter with the card machine, while we were still sipping our wine and hadnโt put our cards out or even checked the bill, despite being well within our 2.5 hours booking slot. Definitely not going back.
Be the first to ReplyGive it a wide berth
We were lulled by the great reviews and edgy East End location into giving it a try and the result was our worst restaurant mistake for yours. Thereโs plenty of innovation but the innovation doesnโt work. There was nothing innovative about stodgy bread and stale waffles but those examples werenโt exceptions. All the courses were memorably bad. Go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyEnormous disappointment
We booked this restaurant because of excellent reviews.alas it was the biggest disappointment. Service was first class but there was not one stand out dish. Great cocktails and interesting wine selection but a poor expensive meal.
Be the first to ReplyDidn't live up to expectations
I had been wanting to visit for years as I'd heard good things, sadly it didn't quite live up to expectations. There's clearly a lot of work put into each dish, and the presentation is great - however at ยฃ65 a head it felt too expensive for what we got, I would be happy with less dishes and more on the plate. The bread course was delicious, however the quail legs really didn't work - it was tough and really hard to eat. The staff were nice, although at this price I would welcome a bit more description around the dishes being served. The printer wasn't working so we were told to go on the website and look up the wine list there - which is fine just not ideal; the ยฃ54 bottle of sparkling wine we chose was served at room temperature - I feel if this is meant to be the case it should have been explained, but looking it up afterwards I can't see that being the case. A disappointing night, but hopefully this was just a blip.
Be the first to ReplyFood Let Down By The Service
Excellent food. No interaction from the service staff though. More interested in getting us out of the door than serving us. Service staff coasting off the food. Never experienced service staff that can't look you in the eye! Restaurant let down by their front of house staff - similar to previous reviews. James and Sam, please sort this out and don't let this ruin your great restaurant! sam@thehospitalitycompany.co.uk
Be the first to ReplyBe careful
Be really careful. We had a table booked for 9pm last Friday. Sadly we had to cancel as our babysitter let us down last minute, so I called at just after 6pm. No one answered the phone so after a few calls I left a voicemail. The next day I noticed weโd been charged ยฃ130 for a no-show. (Not ยฃ50 for a late cancellation) Emailed the restaurant the next day and got a very unsympathetic email basically saying tough luck and that they donโt answer the phones after 6pm (not sure how a late cancellation would ever work then?). Our response to their email asking for them to reconsider went unanswered. I really doubt theyโd make ยฃ130 profit on any table for two and I got the feeling they made this situation work to their advantage. Just left a really sour taste in my mouth and makes me feel it isnโt the community restaurant it claims to beโฆ
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming food; dirty water bottles
Pretty mediocre; sure, food was nice, but not great and a few dishes lacked any real punch. Got the drinks pairing, which I wouldnโt recommend on price alone. Staff were ok. The flip top glass water bottle we were given water in was mouldy.
Be the first to ReplyI want to eat there each week!
I was visiting London for work from NYC and mind you, I eat very well there. I take eating out very seriously when I travel for work as it brings me a lot of joy! I was given this recommendation and it was nothing short of wonderful. I expected to have a decent meal but this unassuming exterior makes way for a kitchen full of laughter and love on the inside which is reflected in each dish letting their fresh ingredients shine. I left very happily satiated and only disappointed I canโt have a taste of the new menu every week. This is a place I would be making time for every week if I lived on this side of the Atlantic. Iโll be recommending to any who visits London!
Be the first to ReplyRude along with dull food
My son who has been to this restaurant before took three of us for dinner for the last sitting at 9pm. It is v.small & intimate so we felt rather awkward hanging around for our table waiting for an empty table... ( not their fault totally; but bad planning) The food was v.disappointing with an overzealous wine waiter and a very, very grumpy waitress. Most of the dishes looked amazing with v.little flavour & like several of the reviews, they proceeded end of night cleaning while we were still receiving our food. Normally this would not bother most people, but the eating area is so tiny & intimate; you felt rushed & uncomfortable. A restaurant this tiny always needs to be at their best.
Be the first to ReplyWOW 10/10
After discovering this place on Secret London, my friend suggested we pay this place a visit. Humble and unassuming, this is such a hidden gem and I cannot recommend it more. Every dish felt unique, balanced and exciting, served by front of house who explained every dish with such knowledge and passion. The open kitchen allows you to sneak a peek at the chefs at work, adding to the intimate dining experience. I believe the menu changes each week so I cannot wait to go back and sample even more of this exquisite cuisine in this easy-going, charismatic restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyUnfortunately very disappointing
Pidgin has been on my list to visit for ages and I was really excited that I managed to get a table. Unfortunately I was really disappointed and did not find the whole experience worth it.
There were some really nice dishes such as the scallop, but nothing standout. The flavour combinations were a bit boring (two venison dishes in a row?) and the turnip dish was terrible. Even for a tasting menu, I found the portions small.
The service was also very hit and miss. The two waiters were very friendly, but the waitress (who primarily served us) seemed like she didnโt want to be there. Didnโt really speak, seemed awkward/unfriendly and tried to clear up plates before we finished. We also spent ยฃ50+ on a bottle of wine and this was left to go warm as no ice bucket or cover was provided. There was never any attempt by her to top up our wine or water (in a restaurant that takes 5 strides to walk across this was poor).
I also didnโt find the ambience particularly nice. It was very cramped and the table was tiny - I had to change seats as I didnโt fit due to being tall. It was also so loud I could barely hear my guest.
Sadly I canโt recommend Pidgin. You could go to Carousel and get better service and a much more interesting menu for the same price. Or you could spend just a little more and go to Angelina, Perilla or Caractere and have a better meal in every way. You could even spend a lot less and have more fun at Six By Nico.
Superb
Food innovative, well presented, really really god with very professional but friendly service.
Pidgin was a great find. Best restaurant of our trip to London
Lovely evening
We visited for a celebratory meal.
Started with the Tom Hanks something cocktail which was tasty with burnt peach on top.
Went for the premium wine pairing which complemented each course well - especially liked the Japanese wine.
Food was delicious, particularly the onion dish and the beef with tomato. Although I guess there will be a different menu next week!
Staff were friendly and attentive - will definitely be returning.
Homing Pidgin
I ordered their lockdown offering for myself and my partner for their birthday. We found it to be incredible value for money with each dish being of a good size and great quality. The dessert in particular was amazing. Would highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyGastronomy in an intimate environment
I've been to Pidgin three times and will definitely come again. I've been twice with friends and once on a date with my husband. The space is intimate, with only a handful of tables. The food is always delicious, interesting and beautifully presented. I never quite know which ingredient is which, and that's an indication of how exciting and creative they are with their cooking. I love being able to try seasonal ingredients you just don't see very often in other restaurants, like razor clams, guinea fowl, lovage, and hyssop. There is always an explanation for each course and often a bit of theatre, such a hot sauce to pour on a chilled dessert. The plates are always beautiful too. All-in-all, it's a thoughtfully done, and thought-provoking restaurant, for which I am happy to pay more than I usually would for dinner. It's a set menu each week, but they accommodated our gluten intolerance request without comment when we booked in advance.
Be the first to ReplyReally bad experience
Unfortunately this otherwise lovely evening will be remembered as being ruined by rude staff (1 or 2, some of the staff were friendly), who treated us really badly. We arrived on time at 9pm, but were told to stand and wait for our table. Half an hour of standing a bit awkwardly in between two tables (there's no bar / waiting area, and the room is very small), we kindly asked if we could have a drink on the house for the inconvenience. They obliged, after some fairly passive aggressive remarks from one particular waitress. We were then sat down, and proceeded to have a nice meal, which is brought out course by course, with a small explanation for each dish. The food on the whole was of a high standard, but there wasn't much of it and it took absolutely ages to come to the table. So 2 hours later, it's 11:30 and we're still on the penultimate course. During this course, the chefs in the kitchen start to clean the floor with steamy water with bleach in it. As the kitchen overlooks the small dining room with an open counter, this hot bleachy smell filled up the restaurant very quickly, and was all we could smell or taste as we ate our course. We could not understand why on earth they would do this whilst customers were still in the same room as them, so of course we brought it up with them immediately. The initial reaction (from the same waitress) was that "she has a nose for these things, and doesn't think that it's really affecting us". This is just a mad reply, firstly considering the bleach smell was incredibly overpowering and secondly, its a pretty rude remark, and accused us all of either lying or being senseless. We then proceed to insist that it was in fact really ruining our meal, and that we couldn't really understand what she meant. She continued to rebuke everything we said, and passive aggressively argue with us, until it actually became a bit verbally aggressive and had us all raising our voices. The chef came out and started chipping in too, which lead to a massive discussion / argument being had. Whoever was right or wrong, the fact is is that they dealt with a fairly obvious mistake on their part terribly, and instead of appeasing us and understanding that we were paying a lot of money for a really poor experience, they accused us of being overly sensitive and trying to get them to take money off. It wasn't about that at all for us, but it's true, offering some sort of discount for bleaching our whole area during our meal would have probably been the appropriate thing to do, don't you think?
I don't like writing bad reviews, firstly because it's a waste of my time, and secondly I'm not a negative person, but I think it's worth people knowing that if you're expecting a high quality dining experience from this place (which advertises itself as such, with a michelin star) then you, like us, may fall far short of that. In fact, I felt emotionally drained afterwards and saddened by it, and struggled to sleep from the adrenaline of the altercation, which really escalated beyond belief. Maybe this one particular waitress and chef won't be there when you go, in which case, maybe ask for extra bread because you'll still be hungry at the end, and book it for 6pm, so you actually still get out of there before 11pm and therefore avoid bleach getting in your food and nostrils as you eat. Cheers
Terrible
Rude staff, cleaning materials used in the kitchen wafted through the resturant. Lots of unhappy customers.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful!
A wonderful experience in pleasant surroundings with attentive, knowledgable and personable staff. The food was was truly delicious with lots of delicate flavours curated throughout the evening, expertly paired with some unique wines. Well recommended!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful festive treat
Itโs not often I get all four of my (adult) children in one place, so we started the evening in high spirits. From the moment we opened the door to this small Hackney jewel, the delight continued. Every course, and paired wine, was beautifully judged. When discussing highlights afterwards, nearly every course was mentioned, and we all agreed that there were no lowlights. The staff were charming, and even the wine waiter thawed by the second or third course!
