Turn this place into a Museum
To start, I love the old building. It has a real sense of charm, beauty and history to it. With that said, it would probably serve better as a museum; considering the current state of the restaurant that occupy s this property. Smell: The smell outside is reminiscent of a baby's diaper. The plumbing here has to be as old as the building itself. I do not know to many people that wish to smell digested food while walking to their car - A good reason why North Salem should convert this into a historical preserve. It's a foul smell, and flushing those toilets is not helping... so that's the greeting one receives while making their way in and out of Farmer and the Fish. Now that we are inside (I can breathe). The hostess comes off rather as a spouse poacher. Good thing she only seats people - anything beyond that comes off a bit awkward. But at least the servers' will be more hospitable, friendly and knowledgeable right? Maybe they would be if they were not over worked or rushed? Its a restaurant with a farm but its hard to find out where my food came from which left me bit unsure if I was eating produce from Acme or produce from a farm- the servers did not have an answer for me. Is it me or did I not see multiple greenhouses by the parking lot (which smells foul)? We found dinner to be lacking. Gave me Twisted Oak (tarrytown) vibes. Uninspired and unremarkable. My scallop salad had 3 overly cooked, burnt scallops next to a bed of baby greens and spinach (those greens reminded me of the ones I get at Acme, in the plastic tins). Very overpriced. And clearly we like to pay for good food. We came to Farmer and the Fish after all. Very disappointed. On our way out we noticed the farm store was still opened so we checked it out. I can't remember the girl with pink hair's name but she was sweet but could tell she was uncomfortable being in this secluded store by herself. A man with an unkempt beard (i think there was food in it), fairly large size, and apparently he worked their, thank god. He left as soon as we walked in. Having anyone work by themselves next to an establishment were people are drinking could be dangerous. Why is this little girl in here by herself? The farm store did not offer anything other than confirm our suspicion that most of the produce in their restaurant I could get at Acme for half the price. Don't be fooled by the name - Everything on the menu is grocery store to table. Will I return here? Prolly not.
Be the first to ReplyTrain Your Service Team
The second time around turned to a very disappointing evening. Despite a half empty restaurant at 7:30 pm, the service was very disorganized as drinks, wine and appetizers were forgotten or wrongly ordered by the new waitress. Then the main dishes took forever to be served! They tried to make it up with complimentary deserts and after dinner drinks, however, the bad experience will remain. These days it is difficulty to find good trained service staff. I recommend to the management to spend more time and effort of educating the service team.

Visited with friends- old school eatery with down home charm. Food was fantastic, drinks cold and service impeccable. Wait was long for an outside table but at least it shows how popular this gem is. Great atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyGood oysters, everything else was mediocre
I live near this restaurant and it is packed every lunch and dinner time. We went for a late lunch to celebrate my husband's birthday. I must be missing something. I really don't see what all the hoopla is about. We started with raw oysters (which were excellent). The bread and the spread for it were also really good. I found the menu to be very limited. I ordered pasta with clams (dry without a lot of flavor), My husband ordered the fried chicken which had a sweet taste to the batter. Not so good. My husband had ordered a beer and then a second one. When he finally got up to see what the holdup was for the second one, the waitress brought a half glass and said that the tap was being changed. She said she would bring a full glass when the tap was connected. She then left and another waitress took her place. He never got the other beer, but we were charged for two. There were few diners, because the lunch hour was over, but the service was inattentive at best. Not a terrible experience, but certainly not worth the money.
Be the first to ReplyMediocre food; overpriced; bad service
We’d heard this was a great restaurant, but found it very disappointing. We were there for a birthday dinner, and of the 4 meals, 2 were mediocre, and one (a fish dish) was over cooked and practically inedible. When we very politely pointed this out, the waitstaff was not responsive, and the manager even worse. It was a busy day, but that’s not an excuse for rudeness. Had they not been so rude, we might have given the place another try, but if I’m going to pay a premium for crappy food and then get treated badly. Primavera is right down the street. The food is excellent and the wait staff are pleasant and professional.
Be the first to ReplyGreat visit
Was in town visiting family and sat at the bar solo. Bartender was great and attentive I started with the lobster cocktail which was half a lobster with seaweed salad excellent and only $20 For my mail I had the fried chicken and scallion mash also really delicious. It wasn’t a cheap lunch with 2 cocktails but quality and service was on point
Be the first to Replya MUST do ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My family and I have eaten here 4x & we all agree it’s our Top Pick when in Westchester county. We always have a marvelous time at this historic restaurant. The service was outstanding (bussers and wait staff go above and beyond). The Cusine was absolutely outstanding & the drinks are Awesome!!! in terms of ambience, there are several fireplaces, and the wood floors creek…. when you walk in, you feel the energy of years past. A MUST if you’re in the area!!!
Be the first to Replylovely outdoor setting
Nothing like eating out under the tent in a beautiful setting. Sitting area for drinks is lovely. Clam chowder was superb, gazpacho too salty but a wonderful amount of fresh crab. The lobster boil with some steamers and potatoes was done perfectly . The only issue was they did not have lobster bibs and we trie to keep napkins tucked in to our shirts but we got splattered anyway. Lobster roll was wonderful. Service was prompt and friendly. The dinner started with a mishap where one of our drinks slid off the tray. The table had to be wiped up and reset. One of our party got a good amount of aperol sprtiz on her slacks and one other on his shirt. They handled it promptly but we were all surprised when we were not comped a round or some other way to acknowledge the mishap.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food & excellent service
We were reluctant to go back but family was in town. We had Sunday Dinner there and the service from Kiera was outstanding and the food was extraordinary! What a difference from before. Each of the 6 of us had something that was exceptional in flavor. Kiera was relatively new to the restaurant she said but her descriptions were spot on! She knew the menu very well. We will be back
Be the first to ReplyHUGE DROP OFF IN FOOD & SERVICE
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants. Over the course of the last 2 to 3 visits, the staff has been overwhelmed and the service is very poor. At our last visit, my salmon portion was only about an inch wide. My wife’s Amish half chicken did not include a breast portion, proven by the fact there was no breast bone on the plate. The manager’s initial response was to give us half off. Eventually, we settled for a full refund of the chicken and a free desert. Nevertheless, a totally unacceptable food debacle.
Be the first to ReplyUnique Concept But It Falls Far Short
To begin with, this place is very popular with their locals in the area ..... because there's nothing else ! You will have to fight the crowds to get in, or make a reservation well in advance. To me, the only thing it has going for it is the raw bar. I came there late in the afternoon on a Friday. I was "lucky" enough to get seated, but outside. They also offered me the bar, but it was way too crowded. And noisy. The entire interior was very noisy. Outside was much quieter. But, you're not sitting out there in January.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome, fresh seafood
One of our favorite restaurants! Alway some interesting specials and attentive service. We have purchased tuna and oysters from the excellent farm shop
Be the first to ReplyMore than just great Fish
Went for lunch and was very surprised by the great pulled pork sandwich. Excellent! The menu had something for everyone. And it is more than just the Great fish they serve. It was a cold day so the fireplace was on and kept the room cozy. Our waiter was Fabulous! So helpful and knowledgable. Looking forward to returning to see what other specials they will have to offer.
Be the first to ReplyThey overcharge an additional 3% on the total of the final bill
I visited the place twice. One last year during the summer and again a couple of months ago. They overcharge an additional 3 to 4% on the final bill as "surcharge " in order to support their talented chefs ???? If you look at their website the owners are the chefs !!! have included a pic from their menu with the surcharge note on it. On their web site the menu does not have the surcharge not. Bad very Bad!!!!!!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent and beautiful
Beautiful old Dutch style post and beam house. Everything they brought to the table was delicious and well presented. Excellent service on Easter.
Be the first to ReplyRomantic launch
Typical American fish restaurant. Try the delicious Lobster roll and the fresh cocktails. Romantic atmosphere with a warm fireplace. We will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyReally!!!!
A 4% surcharge for the kitchen staff, a 20% expected tip for the wait staff and $100.00 reservation charge, non refundable within 48 hours for high priced just ok food. .
Be the first to ReplyOverrated and Overpriced
Reading Purdy’s rave reviews, we expected a lot better food than what we tasted there. Pretentiously, Purdy’s requires a sizable deposit in order to reserve a table. With the tip, the bill for the three of us came to well over $200, with only three alcoholic drinks included.
We decided to concoct our own tasting menu, with two starters and three mains. Two mains would have been enough, in retrospect. The complementary bread and pesto yogurt was presented magnificently, and tasted decent, but was really nothing special.
As starters, we selected the brisket and cheddar sausage and the calamari. These were the two best dishes of our lunch. Both were unusual and delicious. All three mains were disappointing. I had ordered the halibut and the fish in the fish and chips, medium rare. Both were overcooked. The fried fish was excessively crusted in such a way that the crust overwhelmed the fish. The chips were wedges but poorly fried and bland. The tuna was just OK.
Service was pleasant but the ambiance was ruined by the restaurant’s grounds maintenance people trimming the grass with large noisy cutters. Surely such an expensive and pretentious restaurant should schedule its noisy ground trimming during a time when meals are not being served.
At half the price, Purdy’s might be OK. For what we paid, it was ridiculous.
Marvelous food /service and ambiance
Marvelous food /service and ambiance- we had an amazing lunch one rainy afternoon. Had a reservation outside but they generously offered an inside table. The food was gorgeous and very tasty with options for every taste
Be the first to ReplyPerfect cozy meal
It was so warm and cozy inside. It had a wonderful old school vibe. I felt like I stepped into another time. My fiance and I went to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery for our anniversary and our l long walk was crisp and chilly, so Purdy's roaring fire place was welcoming. I even placed my top hat close by to dry it off. Staff was great, treated us both kindly and respectfully, which is so important to me. We will certainly make another trip before the year is up!
Be the first to ReplyStaff Seems Overwhelmed
For a $100 deposit you will take your chances on outside seating: there are four nice tables on the porch, another dozen under a tent on the lawn. It took a while, but a hostess finally appeared, and sat us at a table which is very close to a dusty driveway, busy with cars before sunset. Our waiter seemed in over his head and did not want to bring us a drink or wine list, but he was able to name some of his favorite drinks. We had a great server/ busboy who hustled all night, and he was able to find us a wine list. The food was mostly above average, but chowder, a salad and oysters all came at once although we were clear about sharing oysters first. The overall setting is very pleasant, but once seated under the tent the atmosphere becomes more of a picnic with impatient staff just trying to keep up with the long distance set up. I am sympathetic with current conditions and will try again when things return indoors. If you can, come in a party of 4-6 and insist on the porch.
Be the first to ReplyHigh expectations but disappointed
We wanted to go to a special restaurant and looked at reviews for the best restaurants in Westchester. This was among those listed and we thought it was worth a try. We expected a great experience but it was just OK. We were even OK with the $100 reservation deposit. My wife and I both had fresh tomatoes which quite frankly were not yet ripe enough to serve. Our entrées were very good yet certainly not what we would have expected for one of the best restaurants. Service was slow but that is understandable during Covid. And the entrées really did come out hot which we appreciated. One thing that bothered us was that we watched a table being reset for new customers and the table was just wiped down with a wet towel. During Covid, we have come to expect some cleanser spray between guests to be used. We thought that the value of the meal was in fact fair and honestly, had we not had high expectations, it would’ve been OK.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing at best
Mother's Day, special menu. Take-out only due to the Covid-19 virus. Restaurants are hurting, and while we generally avoid dining out on Mother's Day, this year, because we want to give support to help restaurants survive, we ordered from their specials.
I ordered the 2 lb. lobster, my husband had the surf & turf, a filet with 1/2 of a 2 lb. lobster. On the positive side, his filet was done as requested. However, the rest of the meals ordered were disappointing and frankly, not as described.
I am a big lobster fan, so when I saw the lobster I knew it wasn't 2 lbs. I weighed it in it's string bag, that by the way included a couple of steamed clams. Barely 1 1/2 lbs. My husband's half lobster looked like it was from an even smaller whole lobster.
Each meal was put into one box, no separation, so the excess water from the lobsters spread into the veggies AND the steak. Not even a piece of foil or plastic wrap separated the contents.
Now, I am willing to accept that in this current virus crisis, restaurants might have difficulty getting their orders filled. However, if you say 2 lbs, but only deliver 1 1/14-1/1/2 lbs, there should have been a price adjustment. Throwing in a couple of steamers does NOT make up the difference. When you buy a lobster in a store or fish market, there is a per pound price jump from the smaller size (1 1/4-1/1/2 lbs) to the bigger sized lobster.
To me, it says this restaurant does not care about it's customers. Maybe some of their 'regulars' got what they ordered. Maybe because we are new to them, they think they can get away with shorting our order. Don't know, and frankly don't care. All I can say is this was the first time, and the LAST time we will patronize this place.
A local gem
We live within walking distance of this local gem. The food is exceptional. The farm store is great and reasonably priced. Great seafood and some really well prepared plates. While the food is worth the price the drinks are another story. The wine pours are not generous and frankly a few drinks with dinner makes the meal unaffordable. We go for special occasions. We regularly buy at the farm store. It's worth the trip, skip the drinks unless this is your Hamptons.
Be the first to ReplyChristmas Eve Feast of the Fishes - Year 2
My husband and I opted to try a second year of the Christmas Eve Feast of the Fishes prix fixe at Purdy's. Had gone last year and thoroughly enjoyed, and booked an early table (5:30). The food, wine, and service were all excellent, and met or exceeded our expectations based on our prior experience. What was disappointing, to the point of really dampening our enjoyment of the experience, was the RUDE family at the table next to us who did not control their children and allowed them to interrupt us (and other neighboring diners) with squealing squabbles over their electronics, etc. OK: This is not Purdy's fault, and we DID book an early table, anticipating there would be families dining at the hour. However, there were 3 other tables around us with children, including several large, multigenerational families where it was a pleasure to watch the interactions between the family members, clearly sharing stories, traditions, laughs, and even a few joyful squeals. So, it's not the presence of children or the noise -- it was the complete lack of interest the parents at the offending table showed in actually SHARING A MEAL with their children, and asking that they try to be engaged, polite, and show some interest in the dining out experience. Purdy's we still love you and WILL come back, but we ask that you consider some sort of NO ELECTRONICS at the table (except in emergency) policy. This a universal plea to ALL higher-level dining establishments in our area, and one that I make to BOTH parents and individuals who just can't stay off their darn phones for more than two minutes.
