really great udon! my favorite thing was the texture of the noodles. super bouncy and the soup was flavorful as well. i didn't like the texture of the crab tho it tasted very dry and almost grainy. we also ordered the chicken and gyoza appetizers which were great as well. it's a small place so not much seating area inside but it's cozy and has a nice vibe. good for a dinner date with a friend or parter and workers are attentive as well

We were in NYC for vacation and a local recommended that we try this restaurant. So glad she told us about it ahead of time so that I could get a reservation. This place was packed and even with a reservation you still had to wait a bit but so worth it. Between the four of us we tried various udon bowls and dishes. Everything was delicious and good service. I will definitely return on our next trip to NYC.
Be the first to ReplyUdon and broth here is spectacular.
Simply delicious! Such a cute and quaint little spot. Def worth waiting 30 min in line for!

Hubs was feeling adventurous and walked to Raku to check out the wait time on a Sunday evening. He was quoted 30 minutes so I walked on over to him mid-way prior to us getting our table. We sat indoors which was quite the tight fit but it worked out. We ordered the following for starters: + Fried Chicken: these were a little spicy. Hubs quite enjoyed this + Pork Gyoza: basic but delicious For the main course, I ordered the Sansai which came with "mountain vegetables" and maitake mushroom tempura. The mushroom tempura was out of this world. It was super flavorful and meaty for what was a vegetable udon dish. I also ordered the Shrimp Tempura to eat on the side which was perfectly fried. It was a must have. The service was slightly non-existent. Once you order, the staff doesn't quite check up on you after unless you're flagging them down to get the check. Nonetheless, the meal was delightful.

Wonderful, especially if you're lucky enough to get a chance to sit outside. Like all downtown restaurants, there is a lot of noise but this isn't from the thumping "music ". The surfaces are hard and people are having a good time with lots of conversations. Outside is calm and the service is great.

Order 2 udon and 2 small dishes Udon is no brainier, go try them, can't go wrong with them The tempura is even better than the udon However, the fish liver is just tasteless. Not worth to try save your money and order one more tempura

Delicious udon in East Village! Came here for lunch with a party of 3 and we were seated right away at the outdoor patio. The service was quick and friendly! I ordered the Toriten Udon, which is a hot udon that comes with four good-sized pieces of fried chicken. The soup was light and refreshing! Definitely would be a good hangover meal after a long night out. The noodles had a nice bit to them and they give you a generous portion of them. I also liked there were some veggies included, which helped offset the heaviness of the noodles and chicken. All in all, a solid udon spot that I'd recommend!
Be the first to ReplyTremendous.
The broth in the vegetarian udon has outstanding depth & flavor. The noodles and chilli oil are fresh and delicious. I do wish the udon had more vegetables, but nonetheless 5 out of 5 stars, without question

Got the chance to try this cozy, small restaurant in East Village. The overall restaurant space is small so we had to wait 20-30 minutes to seat two people on a Thursday evening, so try to come here during off-peak hours! Overall the food is pretty decent, but very expensive and overpriced. The agedashi tofu was interesting and different but felt a bit overpriced for what it was. I tried one of their more popular dishes in the Niku Udon and though I will always enjoy a belly filled with warm broth, I wasn't as satisfied as I thought I would be. I feel like the dish could've had a bit more Udon and that the broth could have been spicier and more flavorful. The dish itself you're nearly paying $30 and I still was a little hungry afterwards. Still a decent experience overall, however.

I first came to Raku years ago and remembered it tasting really good. We decided to check it out again since we were in the area and craving udon. There wasn't much of a wait and we didn't have a reservation either (though I'm not sure if they even take reservation's). The inside is pretty small with one bathroom. There's more outdoor seating than indoor seats. We were seated outside which was a little cramped and a little scary right by the road. Service was attentive and fast. We ordered the Niku udon and a duck udon. I enjoyed the Niku udon more. The soup flavor was light but flavorful and the udon noodles were chewy. I wonder if they make their own udon noodles because the shape is a little different, the ends flare out like a trapezoid. The Niku udon didn't have as much meat as I would've liked. The duck udon was even lighter. Oh, they give these frozen grapes as a little treat with your check. Overall: I remembered it being better. It was still good but I wasn't that impressed and I also felt like the prices are a little expensive. I do feel like the Niku udon is a little overpriced.
Be the first to ReplySleek, authentic and unassuming.
Great food and ambience.
Be the first to ReplyThere was already a short line before it opened on Sunday.
As a solo diner, I was seated at their counter seats. There were small cloth baskets on the floor for you to store your belongings as it's a pretty tight space. The menu is accessed via the QR code on the table. I ordered the curry udon with washugyu. It was a short wait before I had a hot bowl of udon in front of me. This was the first time I had udon that was so chewy, it was akin to chewing on tapioca pearls which was an interesting experience. All in all, it was a very hearty bowl of curry udon. The spice was very mild despite the pepper sign next to this item on the menu. The soup was thick but thin enough to not become like sauce. They servee one frozen grape along with the receipt which I thought was a cute touch. I'll definitely be back to try some of their appetizers! The bathroom is a bit dim when there's not sunlight beaming through the small window but it was clean and well kept. It makes sense why there's a line for this place as the indoor dining space can probably fit at most 20-30 people. There's also outdoor seating as well.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was fine but the wait was heinous.
I ordered the ebitan udon and the soup had a deep, clear flavor to it. The flavor of the soup wasn't fully reliant upon salt so the broth was solid. However, as someone who isn't a fan of noodle heavy dishes, I found the three toppings to go with the bowl to be rather unfulfilling. I would like to note that the udon noodles were quite delicious! Unlike the frozen noodles you get at the grocery, they were slightly wider and flatter and didn't congeal. They were able soak up the flavor of the soup. I would also consider the portion to be filling.I was seated at the bar and the bartender (?) was super friendly and charming! The interior of the restaurant is quite cozy and I found the ambiance quite fitting to the restaurant.Personally, this is not a place I would come back too because I prefer more diverse dishes (udon is plain dish imho to begin w) but there was nothing inherently wrong with the restaurant or food.Tldr: this is a good spot for udon fans that like to fill up on broth. Wouldn't strongly recommend to individuals that like more than soup and noodles in their dish for over $20.

Be the first to ReplyWent back and better this time! Arrived on a Sunday
Went back and better this time! Arrived on a Sunday afternoon as party of 3 and immediately we got a table outside with heating inside. As warm as it was in there, it wasn't stuffy but I still would have preferred the heater above to be turned off since it wasn't that cold then. I think the outdoor seating is better than indoor unless it's been revamped since it feels more spacious and brighter. Got the karaage which I remembered salivating for many years ago but it doesn't hit the same no more. Still juicy and quite hot but the outside was a little dry. The udon is still very, very delicious and worth trying out! I also enjoyed dipping the tempera into the broth. As usual, cash only and they give complimentary frozen grapes at the end of meal but it's way too cold.

Waitress was argumentative about ordering an extra side plate of daikon radish.I'm totally okay with paying for it may need be but first said she was a certain price. On the receipt, it was more. I asked why does the price not reflect her words and she says prices are always changing because of Covid, and she wasn't aware.Okay I understand, but you told me a certain price and now it isn't. She says I'll take it off the tab. I thanked her and when she printed the new check, she was still talking about inflation and the rising costs of things. Woman I do not care. You told me a certain price and then it was another. Then you said you weren't aware of the change in costs. That sounds like blatant lying right there. An apology would have sufficed.Raku is tasty, and some of the more decent udon I've had in america that mimics the ones I've had in asia, but nothing is worth that treatment made to make me feel I was wrong, lol.
Be the first to ReplyMost staff was friendly.
I ordered the seaweed udon noodle soup. The udon was cooked to the perfect texture with a bouncy texture. The uni was delicious. The steamed egg had too much sauce and was slight over cooked. The restaurant has a very simple and clean design to it.
Be the first to ReplyAs I say with most reviews.
Raku has been on my list for months lol. They are very popular so I had been eyeing the resy looking for a perfect time to cop a reservation with my partner. I would recommend booking about a week in advance, especially for the friday/weekend spots. we went on a saturday at 7:30 and it was definitely busy. though we arrived at 7:35 we had to wait a few minutes to be seated. there were also walk-ins waiting (i overheard the wait was about an hour or so). cute vibe inside, cozy but not too tight and service was standardly fine. I will preface by saying I have frequented Ehime, Japan countless times as I have family there so I have grown up eating fresh udon regularly. I was also excited about their small plates/apps as they have a lot of traditional ones here. Did the fried oysters and sabazushi to start (would have also done the fried chicken but I knew I wouldnt be able to eat that much). sabazushi- PERFECT. High quality rice, lightly salted fish, I could have eaten all seven by myself. Kaki furai also solid. For my entree I ordered the yamakake because I will always prefer cold udon to hot (sorry not sorry). my partner got the curry udon with chicken. of course I thought mine was better lol but the curry udon broth was well done. not too spicy or salty. The yamakake udon was wonderful, the noodles themselves not as thick as i am accustomed to, but perfectly chewy and slippery and delicious. you can tell its made by hand.
Be the first to ReplyFood came out quick.
Service was attentive. Ramen was decent. I sat outside so can't say much about restaurant ambiance. Loved the frozen grapes they served along with the check
Be the first to ReplyI think a bit overhyped, extremely busy Thursday at 5pm.
We are searching for another udon contender in case Yakiniku West ever discontinues their udon menu (Udon West was absorbed by Yakiniku during the pandemic) which has the only udon broth worth slurping in our opinion. This broth was very light, not bad, definitely better than Samurai Mama's bouillon cube broth, but lacking in the depth and nuance of Yakiniku. Although the fresh knife cut noodles were nice. The other dishes we ordered: spinach appetizer, agedashi tofu and catfish don, were bland and mediocre, the extreme low point being the catfish don, one of the pricier menu items featuring a few small fillets of overly sweetened catfish, many onions, a large amount of mushy rice, and a raw egg to top it off. To our taste the dish wasnt hot enough to really incorporate the egg and kind of upped the gross and dorm-room reminiscent rice-cooker factor of the concoction. We dont eat beef, chicken or pork and many of the reviews seem to highlight these dishes but if you are, like us, on the hunt for the best Udon broth in town, skip Raku and head to Yakiniku West (ask for the udon menu), we cant lose the last good udon in this city!!

This place is so good! I've come here twice now and it never disappoints. For appretizers, I got the agedashi tofu, eggplant and chicken karaage. All were delicious - my personal favorite was the agedashi tofu. I have tried the spicy niku and gyunan. The broth is rich and the noodles are a perfect balance between chewy and firm! The portion size is fairly generous and I never have left feeling not satisfied. A go to spot in east village!

I recently visited Raku on a Friday night and I have to say, it was a fantastic experience. I came at 6:30 and had a 15-minute wait to be seated. As soon as I was seated there was a large line of people waiting to get tables, so come earlier since this shop doesn't take any reservations. The menu was simple but offered a wide variety of udon dishes. I opted for the curry udon with beef, I was blown away by how delicious it was. The curry was thick and creamy, with a nice level of spice, and the udon noodles were perfectly cooked and had a satisfying chewiness to them. The dish was hearty and comforting, and it left me feeling satisfied and happy. The portions were generous and the prices were very reasonable, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. And the service was top-notch, with the staff being friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu.Overall, I highly recommend Raku to anyone who loves Japanese cuisine or is looking for a satisfying and delicious meal. The udon dishes are some of the best I've ever had, and the cozy atmosphere and excellent service make for a truly memorable dining experience.

Be the first to ReplyProbably one of the best donburi I've ever had.
I was stuck between getting katsudon or oyako and thankfully, the waiter suggested katsudon. It was a really big portion, so I didn't get to finish, but totally worth the price! I will definitely be coming back and trying more of their dishes. Highly recommend their chicken tatsuta-age for appetizers. Super delicious and their chicken is so tender. The ambiance is really comforting and welcoming. Although, it is a little small inside the restaurant, they do offer outdoor seating with heating lamps.Another thing to mention, they are a CASH ONLY place. So bring extra money! If not, there is an ATM in the back. Can't wait to come back
