Hofmann just recently received a Michelin star, and I have a feeling it will be receiving an upgrade next year... glad to get in here before it gets too popular. Atmosphere: is understated but elegant modern decor, pleasant low lighting, and a quaint setting with one private glass seating room for 8-10 set before the maiming dining area, good for about 25-40, and a fishbowl glass viewing of the kitchen. It's a very nice setting that could have easily gone awry yet makes sense. Service: The service was very informative, friendly, and mindful. Key points such as leaving all plates until finished with each course, serving ladies and eldest first, checking on wellness of meat, and observant of food restrictions and anticipation for upcoming dishes. Even though they were a bit rattled by a large group eating as we came in they did their best in not looking rattled or letting their service slip. Seamlessness between our main server and assistants was impressive. Food: The variety of food for all appetites was impressive despite no major vegetarian menu or options (it is Catalunya after all) allowed for substitutions and off menu inventiveness for our of our party without straying from the intent of the chef. Also notably compared to many fine dining Michelin starred restaurants were the size of the a la carte starters/appetizers--very large. The tasting menu certainly was more typical small sizes and between 5-9 courses. TIP: you can order any dish including starters as half order for 60% of full dish price. Thus you can make your own tasting menu comparable to the price of preset. Highlights include: Amuse// we had an incredible assortment of amuse all involving macadamia nuts--sorbet, fried nuts stuffed with cheese, as cheese, and broth. Wow. Starters// strawberry soup -- perfect temp, consistency, flavor profile with avocado and anchovies, and absolutely no strawberry seeds. Must order! The foie gras had depth and was impressive in quantity even for the half order. The walnut crumble and rhubarb were nice accompaniments. The goat cheese and beet salad was artfully traditional except with the massive tiger prawns. Yes please!Entrees// The institution takes its rice seriously. Very seriously. Look at their website to see their ode to arroz. Their carnaroli did not disappoint -- with lobster, rabbit, and baby squid/cuttlefish, it was both rich and scrumptious. Fair bit of bite and saltiness with a good portion. The beef tenderloin was the best of my life. It literally melt in the mouth and reminiscent of Kobe and Wagyu varietals that cost 10x as much. My companions enjoyed their lobster and cod loin with impressive portion size, perfect doneness, and presentation. Dessert// The desserts here are the best I've had in Barcelona. They ask you order with your entree as they take time and rightly so. The La Pera was a delightful experience. It came looking like a pear before being melted by hot chocolate poured by the waiter to reveal the candies pear, sorbet, and hazelnut inside--the pear body was in fact chocolate itself. See the video I captured below. The chocolate was delectable and my proper companions were nearly licking the plate clean. The cocoa desert came in smart porcelain cocoa pods, and represented nearly everything great in the spectrum of cocoa. A tour de cocoa done well. And the cheese plate was massive and nice tour of Spain and southern France. Almost a meal in and of itself. Wine// Lovely menu of heavily Spanish wines. The cava selection by the glass and tinto by the glass where often lacking at many nice restaurants. To have the Animá de Raimat server up for individual copa for 19 euro was a find. Price: A lovely a la carte dinner with multiple half-dish starters, an entree and dessert each with a few glasses of wine, and our check with VAT and propina for four people was less than 300 euro. For a restaurant of this caliber that's astounding. I'll be recommending my friends and family come here for their fine dining meal of their trip.
